This is a fantastic story for adults or children. It is probably best classified as a Young Adult, Coming Of Age novel.
But I think it is good for anyone.

this book is set in the exotic Seychelles Islands of the Indian Ocean. The author is from Africa on the Indian Ocean coast. The setting is portrayed realistically. It is a story about a teenage boy, his father, their fishing boat, a dolphin, a beautiful young girl with a rich mother, and old regrets.

Also, this is a tragic story. You don't see much tragedy anymore in entertainment, for some reason.

I read this book more than 45 years ago but I still remember how it touched my heart. Amazon has mistakenly shown this as a "baby-preschool" reading level book. It is not, and I hope they get that corrected.
This book is a tragic story of 15 year old Paul Mistral, who lives in the Seychelle Islands with his adopted father. While fishing one day a dolphin saves young Paul's life and they develope a unique friendship. This is a story of love between a father and son, a young man and a dolphin and a young man and a young woman.

This book is the handiest wine guide to wines of today as the old concepts have fallen by the wayside, i.e. French and Californian is the only way to go. But even in this period of great wealth real wine lovers are willing to try wines of Chile and Australia. I reccommend you keep a copy in your car and smuggle it in restaurants to check on what's what.

The best wine guide I've ever read

The Buzz On Wine is a masterpiece. Finally there is a wine guide that goes beyond the typical, dry language used by wine industry experts. Learning about wine should be fun, not painful. There's no dry, boring technical jargon here, just pure buzz on everything from reislings to port. Sherman takes you all over the world and covers more ground than other books of its type. His writing style is hip and clever. Even The Wine Spectator applauds Sherman's approach in this months Book Review section. Bravo!

A new side of the debate about who King Arthur truly was

Celtic Myth And Arthurian Romance by Arthurian scholar Roger Loomis is a fascinating, persuasive, documented argument for the theory that the King Arthur of history was not an Englishman, but rather a Celtic warrior. Carefully annotated and researched chapters draw connections between the Camelot legend and Celtic lore, and bring to life a new side of the debate about who King Arthur truly was. An exciting and original analysis of one of history's most beloved eras and leaders, Celtic Myth And Arthurian Romance is a welcome and highly recommended addition to Arthurian studies reading lists and academic reference collections.

Amazing insights into the Arthurian myth

For anyone who's ever been fascinated by the tales of Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, here's a book that puts it all in the fascinating context of Celtic mythology. The stock elements of Arthurian legend--the enchanted castles, the abducted princesses, the contests with mysterious knights--are revealed to have a coherent esoteric meaning. As Loomis writes, to understand the relationship between the familiar tales of Camelot and the wilder Irish myths "is to open suddenly the mountainsides into the glittering palaces of the Sidhe"--the home of the Celtic gods.

The brilliance of Roger Loomis--who wrote in the 1920s--is that while he draws the same kind of fascinating connections as Robert Graves, Loomis does so through careful argument and documentation. His work should inform any serious discussion of the origins of the Arthurian tales and the meaning of the Holy Grail.

I bought this book several months ago after reading about Cindy Sherman and her boyfriend's adventures in various European cities where her retrospective was being exhibited in art galleries. Her boyfriend, by the way, has one of the most kicka*s online journals (he doesn't like you to call it a 'blog') on the planet.

It's taken me several months to digest her works. This is heavy stuff, folks, make no mistake about it. What I struggled most with was trying to find a theme among the successive phases represented in Sherman's art.

In the end, I think I figured it out. Her art is really about the exploration of identity. In the process, she comments about feminism, overt and hidden sexuality, pornography, advertising, contemporary and classic art, but in the end, how all this onslaught of imagery affects many people's self image.

Sherman is probably best known for her "Film Stills" series from the 70s, in which she pioneered the technique of being a photographer and subject at the same time. She could have stopped there, and probably been a successful artist. In that series, she made up sets that looked like 50s and 60s movie stills. Of course, none of these movies existed.

In the 80s, her photographs became more macabre, exploring death, the despair of lost innocence, and the ominous aspects of sex and the subconscious.

Shortly after this timeframe, she did the "Fashion" series, which really mocks fashion, showing how fashion can be debasing to women, much like pornography; probably even exploring the relationship between fashion and pornography. Many people are accepting and slaves of fashion, yet abhor porn, yet Sherman shows how the two are inextricably related.

In her next phase, Sherman explores the symbolism that old master paintings exerts on modern art, news photography, and advertising, often apparently unintentionally, which raises the point that we're all connected to the collective consciousness as Jung pointed out.

By the mid 90s, Sherman's photography had included grotesque, ripped apart dolls, humans mixed with dolls, gaping pornographic dolls, composite dolls put together from different dolls, mannequins. This phase segued into surrealism, Daliesque imagery made from contorted body parts and more mannequins. This was followed by the "masks" phase, which in turn morphed into the "Hollywood Hamptons" series. Here, one can probably see best what Cindy Sherman is trying to say. While each of the characters she embodies in this series looks bizarre, we've all seen people like this every day. They remind me of Tammy Fay Baker....grotesque and exaggerated makeup. Who are you Tammy Fay? Who are you Cindy Sherman?

Sherman's most recent series is the clowns, which, in hindsight, even though drastically different from each previous phase, makes perfect sense. After all, nobody knows who's really under the clown mask. Many times, not even the clown herself.

Not to be missed if you're into art that explores the nature of consciousness.

Excellent Resource

As far as commercial outlines go, this is as good as any out there. It is very comprehensive. However, the more difficult parts of civil procedure (personal jurisdiction, subject matter jurisdiction, summary judgment) cannot be learned properly from any commercial outline.

That said, this outline provides an excellent structure for building your own class outline. The lazy student will also benefit from the clear explanation of the black letter law and the basic holding of important cases. Especially helpful are the index of cases and the index of federal rules of civil procedure in the back of the book which provides a quick reference to the materials in the outline proper. Also, the charts that Gilbert usually provides in its outlines are present in abundance and help frame the material in a quick, digestible fashion. I find the chapter approach section helpful to think about issue spotting and to provide an analytical framework for essay exams.

My advice: use this outline to get the big picture, to provide structure for your own outline, and to make sure you are clear on the black letter law. Then, use Glannon's Guide to provide a clear, prose review of the material and to test yourself on the concepts.

This outline pretty much has it all.

Civil procedure is one of the few classes where you can base the majority of your studying on a commercial outline and end up ok. This outline covers all the rules and mixes in the relevant case law at the same time. Great outline.

He's the "Jack Welch" of the Hospital Industry
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-19
I've been in hospital middle-management for more than 20 years. Very early in this book, Sherman states that the reason why hospitals fail is because of bad management. Not the government, not the insurance companies, not the high cost of technology. He offers a terrific approach and identifies the need to totally change how hospitals are run, based on seven Key Result Areas. His principles are quite similar to those of Jack Welch - the importance of great people, integrity, and "the customer is king". This should be required reading for every CEO and department head in every American hospital.

V. Clayton Sherman has written a wonderful dissertation about how the hospital system in this country is run. He also gives a wonderful blueprint of how to correct one of the most mismanaged businesses in the country. The hospital system today is struggling under HEAVY regulatory and monetary restrictions. But if these regulations had been in place from the beginning, like the banking industry, the participants wouldn't be running around like "chickens with their heads cut off" to fulfill "minimum standards" of Joint Commission and other like entites. What the industry desperately needs is a complete overhaul. Mr. Sherman gives the plan to follow in redoing the management of this industry, by throwing out the antiquated notions of management, and starting from the ground up to rebuild on a customer satisfaction driven premise. He sites Wal-Mart and how Sam Walton's idea of keeping the customer number one would work well in the hospital too....but this would require some different rules and some very different thinking. I strongly feel this should be REQUIRED reading for ALL hospital management!

Very good introduction to the subject. I am a EE working in the RF and data communictions fields and still refer back to it every so often. Lots of narrative. Maybe a little dated now in some areas, but there are other books for this. What this book does is clearly explain basics like data coding, modulation, data links, etc., etc. I find that moving to the more advanced books is easier after you nail down the concepts with a book like this.

The ninth collection of this innovative comic strip. Once again cartoonist Jim Toomey manages to show how much we have in common with the denizens of a tropical lagoon as they deal with life, fishermen, and hairless beach apes. Just how Toomey has managed to make a shark, a turtle and a hermit crab so in synch with the trials and tribulations of hairless beach ape life (us) is really pure comic genius. This collection contains many humorous stories and one-shots. Among them are such story arcs as:
Hawthorne's Bed and Breakfast
Dude Ranch Trip
Club Spathorne
Synchronized Poodle Swim Team
The Lagoon gets isolated
Return of the topless mermaid
Megan's Grandma
The Parallel Dimension Lagoon

It is hard to imagine someone how can read these strips and not see and appreciate the satires of modern life. Check it out.

ANY book by Roger Sherman Loomis is an indispensable addition of any self-respecting Arthurian library. His work was ground-breaking when it was written, and much of it stands firmly today against the work of more recent scholars.
The original editions are rare and long out of print.
To find new and reasonably-priced editions like this one may not have the romance of chance finds in libraries or antiquarian bookshops, but it is certainly a more than satisfactory solution.

Roger Sherman Loomis is probably the doyen of Arthurian scholars. He has written countless works on the subject, and has made a name for himself as an academic who has a very clear picture of what is fact, what is legend, and what is fantasy. And in the realm of Arthurian scholarship there is no more important differentiation to make. For the student trying to make sense of the stories of a 6th Century chieftain and the legacy of legend and story that follow him about life without Loomis would be 'through a glass, darkly.'

Loomis features completeness, an unbiased approach, and a lucid writing style that brings the confusion into focus. I have several of Loomis's more scholarly works (most of which have sadly gone out of print) but this is really the most accessible of the bunch. Keep in mind, though, that this is still intended for students of the subject rather than for those seeking popular treatments. It provides much material for thought, and many pointers to other sources that might interest the reader.
