This book is the second in a series of historical novels about the British East India Company, a mercantile corporation that essentially conquered and ruled India with the blessing of the British Crown and its own private armies. The novels are based closely on actual events (serving officers and traders wrote numerous eyewitness accounts) and provide a fascinating account of colonial adventurism in India, which would not be familiar to most American readers. This book evidently takes up where the first book left off, and it ends abruptly, probably where the third book begins, with the siege of Cawnpore. The subject of this book is a massive revolt by Hindu and particularly Muslim soldiers in the employ of the Company, reacting to religious insensitivities, with the intent of ending British rule. The main figure in the novel is Alexander Sheridan, a Captain in the colonial army, who is a capable, intelligent, and heroic character, unlike some of his superiors. I found this book to be delightful and thoroughly engrossing; I did not want to put it down. And I feel I learned a great deal about colonial India in the process. I look forward to reading other novels in the series and recommend it highly. By the way, I have read and enjoyed the Sharpe novels and others by Bernard Cornwall, who excels in describing battles, but I prefer Stuart, who provides more historical context.

not a very good series

The Sheridan series is pretty weak. V.A. Stuart is no Bernard Cornwell. The author knows her history well enough, but the main character isn't very interesting, nor does he really do anything interesting, despite being involved in the Crimean War and the Indian Mutiny. On the whole, I was glad I got these from the library rather than buying them.

The author relates a wealth of experience and provides proven methods of how boats should be built. The side stories of how things can go wrong were very entertaining and reenforced the technical side of the book. The book is written from the european view and could use more info on fiberglass vessels. The drawings and photos were very good and the accompanied captions very detailed.

Good Information- But Dated

Originally published in 1974 this book has lots of information on older style (wood) boats (wood) masts etc. Also the book is written more to the "want to be a surveyor?- this is how you do it" instead of "looking for a used boat?-here is what details to check out. Also Nicholson is practices in Scotland and is geared toward european boats as opposed to us boats. I would suggest "Surveying Fiberglass sailboats" by Mustin as a better choice. Would I buy again? No.

This book has some good info in it, but you can pick most of it up by just sailing with an experianced sailor for a couple of hours out at sea.

Humorous and Eclectic

Sheridan Anderson's "Baron Von Mabel's Backpacking" is a 104-page paperback comic book with black and white drawings, no color. The book is humorous - a good book for 4th through 8th grade boys and girls. The book is also eclectic - a cross between an early edition of the Boy Scout Handbook and Backpacker magazine in the late 60's. It covers the basics of camping and backpacking in a light-hearted way - competent camping skills, no mis-tied knots. However, some advice like doing laundry in a stream without soap (p. 13) are too high-impact for what we teach today. The book has a lot on primitive equipment and methods, wool blanket beds, grass filled pillows, tarps, improvisational skills like cutting bowls off of metal teaspoons to make fishing lures (assuming you have a metal teaspoon). By adult standards, the coverage of some topics is poor (bear bagging (p.74), land navigation (pp. 60-66)), or absent altogether (wilderness permits). There is no coverage of modern lightweight gear or Leave No Trace skills. It is a fun book nonetheless, and perhaps best suited to Scouts on a budget. For older boys and girls (9th grade and up), seeking a more modern and complete coverage of the subject, I'd recommend Karen Berger's "Hiking & Backpacking," and for adults, I'd recommend either Chris Townsend's "The Backpacker's Handbook," which covers backpacking gear, or John Hart's "Walking Softly in the Wilderness," 3rd edition, one of my favorites.

The book has a lot of information in it. Unfortuantely, for me, it seemed to be a little bit of everything (is there anything NOT covered here?) but not enough in depth on anything. Not sure who the intended reader is for the book. It has a lot of good information but you will always want to be reaching for another book for more in-depth discussion. Would I buy again? Sorry, No.

A good, if not comprehensive, look at Sheridans later career
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2004-02-25
This book is an examination of General Sheridan's post-Civil War activities in the West. Far from being a biography of Sheridan, however, this book examines the issues relevant in the various capacities in which Sheridan served, and looks at the way they were handled, both by Sheridan and his subordinates. This work is far from being a comprehensive look at Sheridan's post-war career, and in fact covers only the most important topics (the most prevalent being the Indian Wars), but it nevertheless serves its purpose. By itself, this cannot be considered a definitive work, but as part of a study, either of Sheridan or of the frontier army, this book is definitely worthy of consideration.

An illustrated book on weekend projects for your Boat.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.

This is a nice book, with many pages of ideas and drawings. All are fine weekend projects for the perpetual tinkerer in the Yachsman. It is not a book that you would read cover to cover. I suggest this book as an idea book or as a source of inspiration for a weekend project for your boat. The descriptions are clar and follow nicely the drawings provided. A person with this book would find it easy to make the designs shown and would most likely feel proud of their accomplished project. The only problem with this is that it would take you away from the art of sailing. therefore, I recommend it as a "dream" and "basthroom" book. A fine reference it is.

Good starting material, but only general info is offered.

This is a good book, but rather simple if compared to the works of Beth Leonard. I would have like to have seen reference material sources for home schooling, the applicable U.S. laws and tests, grade level constructs, methods to contact schools before and after the trips, psychological viewpoints from accredited sources and how you integrate the children back once the journey is over. The author seems to spend more time on infants than the older kids. She has good ideas for things-to-do on trips, but I feel that these will run out by the time you hit your first blue water. This is a start though and if that is what was intended, then it does the job. If you are looking for the advanced to expert primer, continue your search in professional cruising magazines and books.
