Liberal Biased Press My You-Know-What
Helpful Votes: 12 out of 13 total.
Review Date: 2004-10-13
I was really quite surprised at this bio of Katharine Graham, owner of The Washington Post (and Madison Council member of the Library of Congress).

I did not realize just how filthy rich this woman was. I found the story of her family (as well as the Jewish heritage) quite fascinating. I did not know, for instance, that her father was responsible for the way stocks are now weighted. That he was able to come up with a scientific (or qualifiable) means to rate stocks was truly revolutionary.

It was due to this wealth that Katharine was introduced to the high and mighty at an early age. Being born self-confident and rich always gives people an edge. I was impressed with her education in that, unlike many rich people, she actually tried to make a difference while at school.

What is most disturbing is the background on how intelligence agencies completely took over the print media. That individuals like Phil Graham and Ben Bradlee were intelligence agents and believed the press should advance government positions shows just how depraved these individuals really were. Not one of them bothered to read or understand the Constitution and the need for a free press.

After Graham died (a tad convenient, don't you think?), Katharine became one of the worst suck-ups to the government. As on page 249, Ward Just was reporting on how badly the Vietnam War was going. Can't have that, you know. Bradlee and Katharine replaced his defeatist reporting with uber-hawk, hack scribbler, and future Library of Congress Director of Communications (brought in by CIA Billington) Peter Braestrup. His take on the Tet Offensive, The Big Story, is always good for a laugh.

There is, because of this, much speculation regarding who did Nixon in. Was it a CIA plot? Katharine's relations with the CIA went beyond Phil Graham and Bradlee. Even Bob Woodward was a former intelligence officer. After reading this book you do wonder why these CIA types can't be satisfied with writing their reports from Langley.

This book can be a bit weak on sources, but it certainly does give a good overview of just what this woman was really all about.

This book relies on innuendo and loose causality to "prove" itself. Most of the sordid material relates to Ben Bradlee and Phil Graham, not to Katharine herself. One of the worst conspiracy theories ever constructed. Not edifying in any way. Read Katharine Graham's autobiography "Personal History," instead of this [garbage].

Liberalism and Media Control

I have read this book and find it to be both entertaiining and informative. It works on the both the level of biography and media criitique. What Davis has done is to record the history of the Graham family fortune along with the liberal ideological adornments that almost makes the familiy and Katharine Graham somewhat sympathic personages. Almost is good choice with respect to this bunch. Because, as the author does so well in outlining the byzsantine grap for political influence of the Post and its owner, we become aware that the Graham liberalism follows the same path as described by J.S. Mill and smowhat more. Classic liberalism seeks power just as the conservative money class does but with a singular difference that ,it is the message not the methods that makes the difference between the two. The classic liberal, and Graham was cetainly cut from that cloth, wants to promote the cut of fairness, individual rights and the rule of law. In other words the liberal wants everyone to feel equal and that the game of capitalism is a fair game. Thus we have the Washington Post , guardian of fairness, publishing the Pentagon Papers, exposing America's shameful war. Or so goes the myth. But Davis puts the lie to this myth and exposes the CIA links and other covert operative connections in the Post. She exposes the CIA connection with Ben Bradlee, editor of the Post. As we now know, the media in America is far from free( and this applies so much so to the money class who own the media) but as Davis shows the media is infiltrated by government operatives ( especially at the national level) . So as anyone who reads this book will see the media and press must be taken with a grain of doubt.

This book is chapter after chapter of ..."we sailed here...we sailed there..." with too much pay-off to friends being mentioned, and too little insight, reflection, facts, knowledge, or wisdom. Many, many better cruising books out there. Skip this one.

A very good overview for sailing in this area.

I found this book to be full of very humorous and interesting accounts regarding sailing in the British Virgin Islands. Having recently returned from bareboating in this area, I can vouch for Robinson's choice of settings for a book of this type. The BVI's are truly one of the world's most beautiful areas for sailing.

I thoroughly enjoyed Robinson's stories and found his writing style to be very readable and entertaining. His humorous accounts of onboard guests and ship/shore experiences made it hard for me to put the book down! I still chuckle when I recall Robinson's account of a visit to a local island bakery and the cake with all the decorative sprinkles (actually ants).

Anyone interested in a good overview of the area, including things to see and do, I strongly suggest this book. It is really a good read and quite perhaps, the perfect book to take along on your flight to Beef Island!

This is a personal journal of sailing during the 1980 winter

The author has taken his personal cruising journal of a past period, the winter of 1980-81 and has created a book that documents his thoughts and activities in a chronological fashion. Although it does provide insight into his life and career in sailing journalism, it does miss the mark in terms of usual ideas for the would be island sailor today. The book does provide good armchair cruising although I personally found it a slow read. The author does provide some useful tips on various anchorages in the Virgin Islands but the text does not provide much island detail outside a brief stay in Antigua. It probably is far removed from the cruising patterns of the typical sailor who is cruising the Carribean basin on a realistic budget. At any rate, it was enjoyable reading and certainly provides insight into the author's family and cruising friends

Even though this play seems boring and does not seem to have much of a plot, as one reviewer commented, Chekhov intended it this way. There is much more to the play that the lack of plot. Personally, at first, I thought that the play was pointless and boring; however, a more detailed analysis in my English class changed my mind. Chekhov has more to transmit that just the actions.

Las tres hermanas-A. Chejov

I expected more from this book...the information covered is limited to basically photographs of gargoyles ( which are nice
to look at). However: there isn't even dates on many of the photographs because the authors stated it wasn't neccessary; the photographs are dislayed in confusing order;and some of the nicer photographs are restricted to the book cover only....The classification of gargoyles into types is the best thing this book had to offer . However the types of gargoyles is something you can gather yourself from looking at the photos... explanations of types of gargoyles and thier metaphorical or historical contexts was very dissapointing. Case in point if you're looking for a professional, scholarly, or informational account of gargoyles, this book will dissapoint you. If you are adept with reading between the meager lines and gathering your own thoughts and concepts from the photographs you can get something from this book. The book mainly offers some photographs with subjective commentary.I'm a gargoyle fan..and am glad to have a new book in my collection...so I didn't regret spending the money even though I was disappointed.

Le Fanu's First Gothic Novel
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-03
Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu is studied today as Victorian gothic writer. Although he wrote several gothic mystery novels, some of his best work, however, may be discovered within his shorter tales such as "Green Tea," "Carmilla," etc. The House by the Churchyard was his first gothic novel, but it was unlike his other gothic novels due to the comical nature of the work. Although the gothic elements are indeed present, the humor which is found within this text is truly delightful; I could not help but to chuckle at a few select scenes. Unfortunately, this work seems to be falling out of print. Therefore, I would recommend to the literary student, who may be trying to acquire Le Fanu's work, to locate a good used copy on Amazon. This particular edition (Pocket Classics) is a good copy with a thick and durable paperback cover.

Imgeorg's "review" should be deleted. It's not Amazon.com's fault that Imgeorg didn't read the product description. This product is one of Newmarket Press's wonderful series of Pictorial Moviebooks all of which provide beautifully illustrated background to the film in question & most of which (like this one) also provide a complete shooting script. All of these books enhance the viewing experience (in theaters &/or on DVD) but are certainly not intended to replace it.

If you're looking for an aid for menu planning, food storage, and provisioning for serious cruising, this isn't the book for you. If you're looking for ideas for week-end cruising, then it might be more useful. If you're a live aboard cruiser looking to get ready for that three or four week passage, look elsewhere for advise. You won't find anything you don't already know in this book.

If you're getting ready for your first overnight on your first boat with a galley, and if you've never camped out, never loaded a cooler, never used a microwave or a gas stove, then you just might find something in here you didn't already know.

A well-written book, nicely organized with good examples of the how and why. As a new boater with enough experience to understand the limitations of meal preparation on a boat I found this book of great help. Nice chapter on charter provisioning. If you are very experienced or passage making I don't think it will be much help. I originally found this book written up in a US Power Squadron magazine. Glad I clipped the article and finally purchased the book. I certainly will be much better prepared.

Very factual and a good concept overall. BUT the problem to me was that it was too factual, and not a good read. It was like reading a text book. On the other hand, if you are wanting to do a research paper on how the Nazis came to power, it has great information.

Well-written, well-researched, scary

Mr. Allen's meticulously researched examination of the Nazis' swift rise to power, as illustrated by the experience of one provincial town in Germany, provides a clear answer to the question "how did they do it?" The answer, by the way, may frighten those complacent Americans who think "it can't happen here." Much of the Nazi methodology used to seduce, and ultimately terrorize, the German electorate into passive acceptance of the new regime will seem disturbingly familiar.

This is NOT a historical overview of Roman history, as one might think from the title. It is a quasi-philosophical collection of vignettes about a few times, persons, and events in Roman history. It reminded me of a taxi ride through Rome, with a driver pointing out interesting historical tidbits about various places while passing by. Not a bad writer, but a generally personal vision of Rome and some of its history.

I was looking for a book on sail design and repair.Although there is a lot of good information in this book, Half the book is used up describing different types of rigs and early sail history. I was disappointed with the content for my purposes (sail repairs, maintainence and modifications) I later found: Sailmakers Apprentice by Emiliano Marino, and Sail Care and Repair,by Dan Neri. Now for me,these are worth having!! I can't see looking at this book again. Sorry, but it was a poor choice for me.

Excellent description of history, how, and why sails work.

I've been sailing for 40+ years - raced dinghies up to boats across the Gulf of Mexico and this is the first time I ran into a clear (believable) explanation of how the sails work. Airplane wing - it takes longer on the curved side - Bernoulli - low pressure =s lift. I'm an engineer and have lived with that forever - but although a sail may be shaped like the upper edge of a plane's wing - it doesn't have any thickness - therefor there is not much difference. How does THAT explanation account for the lift? As an engineer I can only say Thank You Derek Harvey for a better and more believable explanation (I hope your right!).

His explanations of what adjustments to make to the sail under varying conditions were most helpful. I only wish he had made an easy reference sheet. I also found it useful to know why then sail makers do the things they do. I will consider it a valuable tool in helping me decide what boat, and what sails to buy in my current search.

Not only do I recommend it to others I am buying a second copy for my son who has just made the varsity racing team at the Coast Guard Academy. `nough said.
