As an interested portuguese, I must say that I learned a lot, that I got curious, that I followed directions that worked. I should also say that sometimes the authors incurr in minor misspellings. However, this is a book I would promptly advise to anyone seeking for the old european flair. Very well done!

One of the best books I've ever used in college-- and after!

I have the 3rd edition and was checking to see what newer edition there might be. I am surprised there is no review of this book, so allow me to fill you in! We can all put words on paper, but how do you make a plan for an effect essay? A plan is more than an outline, it is a flow. There is a natural way to reach an audience than you might include in an outline, but cannot come from merely using an outline. This book will help you very well with that, and with the styling of sentences. I have three "college handbooks" of writing, none of which help me at the creative stage of planning an essay. I recently had to take some scholastic entrance exams that involved writing essays. Even 25 years after completing my freshman english classes, I still have Baker's "The Practical Stylist". In just half an hour of review, it all came back to me. As I sat there in the exam with the clock ticking, I was very comfortable in my writing. I knew what I needed to accomplish and how to do it. Thank you, Sheridan Baker, for your timeless instruction. (If you wonder how the book might have changed from the 3rd to 8th editions, it has enlarged. What was a small chapter 1 now is 2 chapters. The core material is still there, starting at chapter 3.)

The first reading of this book was different. What is this book about? The second and third reading of this book changes the way I look at wind.

I got two other books for my crew to read. We stopped looking inside to boat at wind indicators. We staring looking outside to boat and improved two or three boats up in our fleat.

Super hot erotica for thirty nine something crowd ....

Review Date: 2005-02-14
OK .. as if getting a new set of cast iron pots and pans as a 20th wedding anniversary present wasn't bad enough, the fact that Julia's husband, Micheal is fast asleep after the celebration really made her think. The new lingerie she bought for that special night, unnoticed, and her husband dancing with the young secretary that he had an affair with a year ago certainly didn't help Julia's confidence either .. so what to do ....

One of her girlfriend's upcoming marriage gave Julia just the excuse she needed to get out for a night 'with the girls' to just plain 'let her hair down' among other little things. The inordinate attention of a man young enough to be her son, and catching the bride to be doing some pretty sweet and 'nasty' little things was enough of an excuse for our heroine to start 'partying' on her own.

Being an 'older' woman who has remained faithfull to her marriage, Julia had no 'little nagging' problems with her conscience as she was taken to the young mans's apartment where she could slowly, gently and teasingly take him through the paces. The few hours alone, in the dark brought back delicious memories of feelings and emotions that for much too long had gone unappreciated ..... something that our heroine was going to correct from that point on!

The author's erotica writing skills are astounding when compared to much of the erotica hitting the books today. She manages to describe the seduction by Julia and such a detailed and delicious way that the reader can not only literally feel the heat but pretty well enjoy a vicarious exprience as if we were there ...

This is a Hot Hot Hot book and I consider it a must have to be re-read over and over .....

This book is an excellent addition to any literature class. I began using it recently and it has been a tremendous help. It is the perfect addition to any literature class or for any one who is interested in properly analyzing or writing about literature. A great addition to this book is Perrines Literature.

Notes from the Old School, or rather, the Experienced School
Helpful Votes: 28 out of 29 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-01
Each chapter of this book is an old article from the good years of Rudder Magazine (1893 - ~1950). I now see why the magaize has such an excellent reputation. The book is full of very interesting, practical and relevant information from real experts about both sailing a power boating. Also the authors are often very opinionated, and I find that extremely entertaining and useful. Today's magazines are largely of forum for advertisers, and the editors often write what pleases the advertisers (their primary source of $ is advertising, not subscription fees). I have more confidence in the advice of experts who have nothing to gain (this book), than the happy go lucky stories and product reviews of today's magazines.

If you don't like all of the ridiculusly positive reviews, shiny products, and promotion of excessive reliance on systems, then skip today's magazines. If instead you believe sailing and cruising is about depending on your own competence with basic skills, knowlege and experience, then this should be excellent and informative reading.

The information here is very relevant today: Boats still float, the wind still blows, and the sails still fill, good seamanship has not changed.

I would take one issue of Rudder Magazine over a year long subscribtion of today's magazines (Sail Mag., Cruising World...)

First off, this book presents an undeniably complexed subject in a logical, easily followed format. It's really quite remarkable the amount of information it holds. I think every racing skipper, helmsmann and navigator should have a copy. The diagrams and bi-lines leave no questions to be asked. i highly recommend it for those who intend to race at any level.

Finally, the WHOLE story of this famous boat.
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1999-04-29
I had the opportunity to read the manuscript before publication. It's a fascinating story of how this boat, built in Great Britain, sailed all over the world before finally ending up in Idaho. Yes, it recount's Tristan Jones' adventures with Sea Dart, but it goes far beyond that, telling about the others who have owned the famous boat, both before and after Tristan. There are heros and villains all along the way. It's an amazing story of survival-for the boat! You will believe a sailboat can have a soul.

A true sea voyage of discovery

This documentation was one of great wisdom and discovery. Captain Ian Tew pulls the reader into both he and his grandfather's sea journey. I was captivated by the depth of detail Captain Tew used to express such heroic exibitions. I highly recommend this documentation to anyone who truly appreciates the sea and the many discoveries that unfold on a sailor's journey.
