A Second Collection of Social Teaching from Canadian BishopsReview Date: 2005-01-27
As the book states: "Besides providing later documents of the same genre, the editor has included messages of a greater variety of subjects touching the social good, secular and ecclesial .... Inclusion of some addresses of the bishops at the World Synods is a useful introduction to documents not easily accessible."
Father Sheridan, S.J., formerly professor of moral theology at Regis College of the Toronto School of Theology, is an associate of the Jesuit Centre for Social Faith and Justice (Toronto). His introduction details "the recent papal association of social justice with social love and the preferential option for the poor.
A very worthwhile addition to any personal or Catholic Social Teaching library!!

Finally, A Diesel Manual for the Rest of US!Review Date: 2008-03-01
Self-sufficiency is ingrained in the sailing culture. Sailors who have no fear of tackling fiberglass repairs, solving rigging problems, or intricacies of onboard plumbing shy away from their diesel and its mysteries. Yet, a diesel is a very simple machine and understanding the workings of a diesel engine is made equally simple and understandable with Jean-luc Pallas's manual.
MDE begins with an overview of how a diesel runs and the systems involved in keeping it running; fuel, air, and electric. The Manual is richly illustrated with large clear photos and simple understandable schematics. Pallas avoids lengthy passages describing a concept, providing instead a short paragraph or two with bullet points highlighting essential information. Each maintenance item is rated for difficulty, simple, technical, or complex to guide the neophyte diesel mechanic. Estimates of the time needed to complete the task and a list of necessary tools accompany the rating.
Marine Diesel Engines is a welcome addition to any sailor's book locker, it certainly was to mine! I just wonder how well it will hold up to the inevitable greasy thumbprints and spilled diesel.

If you own a boat...Review Date: 1999-12-20
If you have a powerboat, a rowboat, or a sailboat then I recommend this book. This also makes a great gift for any boat owner.
One thing that I really like about this book is that there are lots of pictures and diagrams to help you understand what they are talking about. When you are doing work on a boat, sometimes one picture can be worth a thousand words.
It is obvious that the people writing this book really know what they are doing. This was not written by amatuers.
So if you have major repairs to deal with, or you just want to understand how your boat was built, this is the book for you.

A Staggering Achievement for Amateur SailorsReview Date: 2000-01-16
For reasons best known to themselves, the 1995 small boat anti nuclear protest at Moruroa was largely ignored by the world's sailing press and yet in sailing terms alone it was a phenomenal achievement. Given just 6 weeks for preparations, some 36 boats attended mostly from New Zealand and were largely crewed by amateurs sailors rather than experienced nuclear protesters. The voyage itself was the distance of two trans-Atlantic crossings, held in the middle of winter and with the outward leg mainly to windward. Once at Moruroa, there were no bars or beaches for relaxing, just a hostile reception from French navy and aircraft, and yet, inspite of gear failures, crew disagreements and some appalling weather, all boats returned home safely.
From a small boat perspective, 'The Moruroa Blues' gives a fine account of day to day life in the 'Coffee Shop' - the name given to a featureless patch of ocean to the north west of the atoll entrance which was used as an informal meeting place. In an easy readable style, Lynn Pistoll's describes protest tactics and how they learnt to anticipate and manage antagonism from the French military. These events are an important part of our anti nuclear history and should be told. The 'Moruroa Blues' is a compelling read and I thoroughly recommend it.
