Beware: Murphy loves the sea

The review's title is a statement made by Steven Callahan in the foreword of the book. I believe in it. I'm a brazilian retired sailor, now working in sea survival issues. The foreword is an urge for reading, as the book itself. Callahan says that "sea survival begins from the time you step aboard and doesn't end until the time you disembark". He also advises mariners to increase their range of knowledge, training and skills. I think that this purpose was achieved by the authors, using clear and current informations.

Frances and Michael Howorth's The Sea Survival Manual is the item of choice for any working on an ocean-going boat, whether it be small or large. From safety and survival equipment and safe practices at sea to handling emergencies, abandoning ship, understanding how the life raft works, and more, The Sea Survival Manual is all about coping in an emergency, and is the first comprehensive, modern book to address the topic for small craft owners.

After reading Try & Catch the Wind I anxiously awaited Mr. Murphy's sequel. It definitely kept my attention throughout my reading of this book; it was difficult to put down as I wanted to know what was going to happen next. I liked the mixture of suspense and humor which had me laugh out loud. I thought the character development was superb; I liked the ability to know more about the people from Try & Catch the Wind and the development of new characters. I'm looking forward to having the opportunity to know these characters better. I'll keep my eyes open for all future books by Mr. Murphy.

Great second novel

I have been waiting for "Sheridan Manor" since reading "Try and Catch the Wind". The second in the Casey Bannister series is a must read! Again, Murphy proves himself to be a great writer, providing humor with suspense and intrigue.

Once I picked up the book, I wasn't able to put it down. The secret to Sheridan Manor is a shocker and you won't believe the ending! A nonstop thriller with twists and turns that will keep you on the edge of your seat! A magnificent second novel to a promising new series. I can't wait for the next book to see how Murphy will top this one!

Dark Humor

Review Date: 2006-07-12
The Stygian Soul opens pseudo-darkly with Sheri L. McGathy's Six Steps, well written prose that sets pace for the collection and asserts it mid-section in Coldoar. An experienced cast of writers blends snatches of humor, horror, and literary in fantasy tales well thought, not splashed blind. The anthology is simple and natural; the mood vagrant enough to take you places without going askance. I experienced bemusement and tragedy, witnessed a pioneer of balance in something superior and contemplated fantasy with new eyes. Most of the stories do not delve too deep into the complexity of terror to lose enchantment but embody an aspect that individually stands them apart.

Worthy of mention are Tina Morgan's Transcendence; a ceremony of the Choosing that both fascinates and dismays; B. D. Faw's darky short, How Scutter Saved My Life; Michelle Acker's Blood Debt, and a quest for power with a twist in The Price of Magic; Lee Masterson's acceptable risk that yields far more; Rie Sheridan's The Game of the Gods; and Carol Hightshoe's chaos duet of snapping branches, one unicorn, and a flame dancing elf.

18,000 mile Millennium Voyage

Rebeccasreads highly recommends THROUGH THE LAND OF FIRE as an engrossing & delightful read about Ben Pester's cruise from Falmouth, Cornwall on the south coast of England in his 36 foot classic wooden yacht Marelle, to the mysterious, dangerous & unfrequented waters of Tierra del Fuego, Patagonia, & around Cape Horn.

Following in the wake of such legendary mariners as Drake, Raleigh, Cavendish, Davis, Darwin, & of course, Magellan for whom the strait is named, Ben Pester salts his nautical log of weather, ships, messages home & the seas they encounter with tales of mutinies & survivals, settlements & penal colonies & the possible source for Coleridge's THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER.

Included are appendices by his crew member, Jeremy Burnett re: onboard recipes & observations about the creatures who call that magnificent part of the world home, as well as Adrie Burnett's account of how she provisioned the crew with victuals for their nine month voyage.

a dangerous read if you have a dream....

If you have an un-fulfilled dream, a personal Everest which has beckoned you to its base-camp throughout your life and then taunted you with its cloud-capped peak, and you have ever wondered `When will I get there?' then this has to be the book for you.

The author, an accomplished long distance sailor, had always had a yen for sailing round Cape Horn and since he hadn't done it by his 75th year he decided it would make a nice birthday present for himself and so he set off in his 36 ft. wooden sloop `Marelle' with two friends (aggregate age 193 years for those interested in statistics) to achieve his personal dream.

`Through the Land of Fire' is a beautifully written and unostentatious account of this remarkable voyage with passages of detail which make you feel part of the crew. Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego are still little-known areas and to keep the interest level high and introduce the regions with their colour the author adds vignettes from the path-finding voyages of Magellan and Anson.

A remarkable book and one that kept me hooked from beginning to end - not to be churlish but only one criticism, or maybe a request for a subsequent edition. The book has several appendices and I would really have liked to have seen one from the author's wife. There is a picture of the three wives watching the home-coming at Falmouth and I would really have liked to share what was going through her mind as she waved her husband off on his 18,000 mile voyage.

The Big Book of Bhakti
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2006-07-18
This is one of the most marvelous books of my experience. At first, like India itself, it can be overwhelming. Is it a spiritual book? Is it a travel book? Is it an art book? Then you realise, as in traditional cultures themselves, it is all of these woven into an integrated whole.

Both the photography and the text are first rate. There are excellently composed color photos on almost every other page. However, the text is both very accessible written and very enlightening on the Vaisnava (Vishnu worship) tradition. I especially valued the commentary on how the tradition entered the West through Pythagoras, the Essenes, and the Gnostics. Simularly, the life story of the medieval reformer Sri Caitanya was extremely informative and inspiring- as was the explanation of Jagannath.

The overall structure of this book is that of a pilgrimage to eleven of India's most holy places. Indeed, it is a pilgrimage between two covers. One day I too would like to retrace this pilgrimage myself, first hand.

You really have to handle this book to appreciate its measure. It is in an oversized format, printed on high quality glossy paper, and weighing in at around 15 lbs. There were only 3000 of the first edition printed which in more ways than one makes it truly a rare treasure.

A seminal, core addition to East Indian religious studies

Vaisnava India is an immense, comprehensive, gorgeously illustrated, 759 page, "reader friendly" introduction to the ancient and venerable Vaisnava religious and spiritual tradition of East India. Vaisnava India is filled with dazzling color photographs of classical artwork, sculpture, temples, and much more, enhancing an erudite text by Geary Sheridan (a practitioner of Vaisnava and President of the Vedic heritage Foundation) that explains the basic nature, tenets, and various stories connected to Vaisnava. A superbly presented volume, Vaisnava India is a seminal, core addition to East Indian religious studies reading lists and academic reference collections.

Maldwin Drummond is a sailor and a farmer who got an idea. He cruised under sail with the specific goal of following in the wake of artist and nonsense poetry writer Edward Lear (1812-1888) The result is "After You Mr. Lear: In The Wake Of Edward Lear In Italy" which relates Maldwin Drummond's nautical and land-based adventures as a result of his unusual quest. Profusely illustrated with cartoons, paintings, photos, and maps, "After You Mr. Lear" is an intrinsically interested account of a modern-day cruise which was embarked upon as a voyage of discovery to the appreciation of armchair travelers and land-bound sailors. Drummond's deftly written accounts of leaving from the Isle of Wight aboard his yacht 'Gang Warily" and crossing the English Channel, then navigating the rivers and canals of France all the way to the Mediterranean, then sailing down the coast of Italy from the Rivera to Naples, then going inland to Campania, Basilicata, Sicily, and Calabria, will hold the reader's rapt attention from first page to last. "After You Mr. Lear" is a highly recommended addition to personal reading lists and community library collections.

WOW is this one HOT erotic novel for normal people ...
Helpful Votes: 5 out of 5 total.
Review Date: 2005-03-07
It's almost hard to believe, actually a contemporary erotica novel by one of the best erotica writers around, Nina Sheridan, that does not require BDSM, violence, degradation and hundreds of other perversities that authors seem to thing are in demand today ..

After 5 years of a less than a stellar marriage, Anna, a young secretary at a small college in the outskirts of London is asked by her boss to put up a visiting French businessman who was coming to the UK for a lecture series. This of course is quite a common practice at the school since hotels in the village left much to be desired. It just so happens that ASnna's husband had to travel out of town for a week the day the lecturer arrived leaving Anna alone at home with the 'guest'...

Of course Anna wasn't prepared for this lecturer who was only a few years older than her, single, and very very continental, cool and smooooooth .... So, poor little girl, she now has to cope with a guest in her house.... and ... considering that her husband took off when he should have been there that week to accompany her to a marriage counselor didn't help much either. Anna may not know much about life, love and her body but she was sure that what she had isn't what all her grilfriends said she shoud expect from a husband. The fact that he takes exactly 6 minuts and four seconds to make love to her, the fact that he didn't want her to wear sexy underthings, the fact that she wasn't allowed to move during their lovemaking, and finally the fact that she always thought of her grocery list during their lovemaking, convinced Anna that there must be more to life than this ....

Well Anna was in for a very pleasant surprise .....

The author gently takes Anna and the reader down a soft gentle meandering path in her story as we vicariously enjoy the sexual awakening of Anna .... yummie .... yummie .. yummie ....
