A biography of Newman which never flags

Theologians tell me that this is the ONLY biography of 19th Century English churchman John Henry Newman to read.

The book is long, but uniformly accurate and well prioritized.

For myself, the best part takes Newman from his birth in 1801 through his first religious conversion--to the Evangelistic pattern of the Church of England--in 1816. I have read at least two dozen accounts of "Young man Newman" and Gilley's trumps them all.

I have this book for one of my college classes, and it is really interesting to have a book that is not just a dry ethnography. I think it holds true to how it describes itself in the introduction: "We want to investigate one central and fundamental theme--the persistence of ethnic identity in the face of constant change...about groups of people who have maintained a strong sense of their own ethnic identity in the face of conquest, persecution, exile, and in some cases attempted genocide." Interesting insights and analysis. Tells of past, current issues, contact with Euro-Americans, and possible futures of these peoples. An interesting read even outside of class.

Great finetuning of Foucault

This is great for general reading on Foucault. It does a great job tying together a lot of the things Foucault tried to say in his books. If you're a policy debater trying to become a Foucault buff, get this book. The chapter on critique does an excellent job drawing the distinction between criticism and transformation. It's good stuff :)

Excellent resource for teaching

I am a classroom teacher of 5th and 6th grade students and I constantly struggle with how to help my students revise their writing and add rich detail to their writing. This book provides some excellent ways you can help students to improve their writing. There are many hands-on activities that allow the students to use drawing, acting, speaking, and other forms of expression. The activities can be used at all different grade levels.

The idea is to use books the students are currently reading to help them learn how to write and revise well. If you have struggled with coming up with writing lessons that interest the students and get the point across, this is the book for you! The author provides examples of many different books you can use to teach the lessons, and she often includes specific excerpts right there in the book. This book is very user friendly. You will find it easy to read and you will feel ready to try some exercises in your classroom right away!

This book is a gem!

I'm just beginning my career as an elementary school teacher. I've taught creative writing to both 6th and 3rd graders. My only gripe with Katie Johnson's book is not having found it sooner! Reading this book is like having a conversation with an experienced and trusted colleague. It's mentoring in a book. Ms. Johnson takes you by the hand and shows you step by step how to take the literature you are already using in your classrooms to teach creative writing. This book overflows with marvelous ideas you can begin using today. Whether you're trying to teach an eleven year-old how to write a good lead or help an 8 year-old move beyond such descriptors as "good" and "nice", this book will point the way. What I find most remarkable about this book is its comprehensive treatment of writing in the elementary grades. Most books seem to be geared toward one grade level or another, but not this one. This book contains engaging lesson ideas for every grade level, K-6. Reading this book is like sitting in the back of a classroom and watching a master teacher at work. It's a gift. Don't miss it.

Red Sea Peril - an eye opener!

Having spent my life at sea on Tugs, Ships, Barges & every type of pleasure craft I can get hold of, I have been traveling the world in sweet innocence! To read about such an obviously honest & gentle couple, who would do anything to help anyone they met, who might like help, taken prisoner in this way, seems incredible. I am so glad they were able to gain their freedom & let us read about their ordeal & their friends, relatives & captors. A gripping read, that shows a couple that are so definitely made for one another. Therefore a read with everything:- Travel, Drama, Adventure, Gentleness, Love, Compassion......... What else can a good book have! I LOOK FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE!

A tale for sailors

I have really enjoyed reading Red Sea Peril. I found I could imagine Shirley and Peter, so different, and so complementary at the same time.
I liked the style, the sentences are short, precise, with just enough humor. In fact it was very pleasant to read.
The chapters are just long enough and the flashbacks permitted the reader to set the situation of a sailor's life and the choices you have to make. BUT I would like to have followed with small charts at the beginning of each chapter (what my own editor has asked me to do) with points where you were and where you go. Sailors like to see this.
However, I appreciated very much all the photographs, very well situated. I like very much too the "introspectives" and would have liked even more of them. I enjoyed too the poetry, it rings so "true" and I felt that very much. Even in drama I was aware of Shirley's "joie to vivre".
Finally you hae given me a taste and I wish to read more of your adventures because this book merits it. Ihope to read the next book soon.

This is an amazing book on a great designer/architect. There are other OOP books on Jacobsen but this one describes every detail of this great project. It also describes other related buildings and objects so that you can get a good overview of his work. A must have for any design fan.

Room 606: The SAS House and the Work of Arne Jacobsen

The Dalai Lama was staying at the Radisson SAS Royal Hotel when I was in Copenhagen, a month ago, but happily Room 606 was unoccupied and I was able to see this one surviving fragment of Arne Jacobsen's gesamtkunstwerk. Denmark's leading architect designed this hotel-terminal in 1960 as the flagship of SAS, a major patron of progressive design, when air travel was still a civilized experience for a fortunate few. Fabrics, lighting, and furniture-most famously the Egg, Swan, and Drop chairs-even the stainless steel flatware and door handles were custom designed by Jacobsen for the hotel. Everything but the one room (which rents for about $575 a night) and the spiral stair in the lobby has now been changed. Sheridan, a New York architect, employs a wealth of period photos and sketches to recreate every facet of the original and places it in the context of Jacobsen's earlier work. The result is a gem of lucid scholarship. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
