For my money, David Kasanof is the funniest maritime writer of all time. Years after I ran out of time for boats, wooden or
otherwise, I kept up my subscription to "Woodenboat" just for the laughs Kasanof's column provided. I still have a complete
file of his own ill-fated publication, "Classic Boat Monthly." Anyone know of a suitable place to donate that?

This is a great collection of humourous essays. We kept reading portions aloud to each other as they were too well written
and humourous to keep to oneself! Short essays made it possible to put it down between readings and look forward to the
next read. Definitely worth a place on any weekend sailor's or liveaboard's shelf.

In a Melville-like tale, the true account of a young man emerging from bare-chested innocence to the beginnings of a powerful
adventurer, this story of 1937 life on a four-masted schooner on the northwest coast of Alaska is an exceptionally worthwhile
read. Like an old friend recounting a fascinating experience, Mr. Hofvendahl writes a compelling story of the
power of nature and of the iron men who survived on the last of the heavy ships of sail.

Inner Lives Of Deaf Children: Interviews And Analysis by Martha Sheridan (Associate Professor in the Department of Social
Work at Gallaudet University) is an informative exploration into the lives and minds of deaf children based upon interviews
with seven very different deaf children between the ages of seven and ten. Outstanding for its exclusive perspective and invaluable
documentation of a deaf child's struggles in contemporary society, Inner Lives Of Deaf Children is an invaluable and seminal
collection of studies and research into the psychology, lifestyle, and personal adaptation of deaf children. Inner Lives Of
Deaf Children is very strongly recommended to parents, teachers, social workers, counselors and anyone else involved in the
lives of deaf children.
Good info. Easy read.

Inner lives of deaf children is an informative book that is easy to read. The author, Sheridan, grew up deaf so she has a
personal connection to the subject. The book starts out with background information on the deaf community and the author.
This helps you understand the deaf world better. Sheridan then explains how she conducted the deaf children's interviews.
The bulk of the book consists of Sheridan's interviews of deaf children. She provides the actual transcripts of the interviews,
allowing the children to speak for themselves instead of forcing her own interpetation. Throughout the interviews Sheridan
provides little summaries that help the reader keep track of the main points along the way. She selected children with different
backgrounds and communication methods so that the diversity of the deaf community would be better represented. At the end
of the book, Sheridan neatly wraps up the results of her interviews; she provides the reader with a better understanding of
what it is like for deaf children to grow up in today's world. I highly recommend this book.

KEEPING THE BRITISH MOVIE INDUSTRY -"UP"...
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-06
Review Date: 2007-01-06
Simon Sheridan has if you can pardon this and other puns in this piece, done a "bang-up" job of documenting the history of
sex movies in British cinema. From the nudist films of the 1950's to the titilating "sex-coms" of the 1960's and 70's, it's
all here in chronological detail complete with movie stills, posters and "behind the scenes" stories. Now if you're already
thinking that this subject is something you'll find unintersting or offensive, well let me just say that it's really the same
as watching Benny Hill on TV or a "Carry On" movie that basically pioneered the whole genre in the first place. Only it's
taken to the next step or mis-step depending on your tolerance for such things. With titles like "Confession's Of A Window
Cleaner", "Can You Keep It Up For A Week", "I'm Not Feeling Myself Tonight" and alike, this was the state of the British movie
industry in the 70's and was all that was keeping it alive. A far cry from the day's of the great Ealing comedies and epics
like "Lawrence Of Arabia", it was a sign of the times. Whereas in America "hard core" films like "Deep Throat" were becoming
the "in-thing", that kind of pornography was still very much illegal in Britain. So to enhance the "soft core" simulated
sex, the comedic element was added in typical naughty British "seaside humour" style. Indeed, many of the same big name comedic
actors who were on TV, found their way into doing cameos in these pictures. You even had such stars as Joan Collins stripping
off in "The Bitch" and "The Stud", thats right the same star of TV's "Dynasty". You had veteran directors like Val Guest
and American Jack Arnold, trying their hand at it. As well as newcomers like Martin Campbell, who later went on to direct
a few James Bond movies. Big name studios like EMI and Columbia Pictures, certainly didn't mind getting in on the act either.
As the author saids "these were movies that put boobs on screens and bums on seats". What with most of Britain's cinema's already converted to bingo halls and supermarkets, exhibitor's were desperate to get the public or as they like to say over here "punters", to fill up those seats. As you might expect -they did and it prooved very profitable specially when they were produced so cheaply and so fast. I can even remember going to my local ABC theatre in London and getting amused and somewhat modestly aroused by them. Looking back, it's all very dated and tame by today's "in your face" digital standards. A good supplement to this book, is Sheridan's other book on Amazon, a look at British sex star Mary Millington in "Come Play With Me". Taken from the title of Mary's biggest hit sexcom, which also incidently holds the record for being the longest-ever theatrical booking in British cinema history!

I have had this book for ages now. It was bought for me as I am a fan of the Carry On films.
I read about all of the films and saw the Confessions films on television, I thought that they were fun. To me these films are only one step up from the Carry On's, in there sex content.
I found them so good I made it my mission in life to find these movies and watch as many as I could. This book has become invaluable to me as a reference book.
People are so busy trying to be politically correct that they have forgotten how to laugh, at the women and the men! Do we have to analyse everything? can't we just enjoy it?

Captain Don Launer is a writer who is easy to enjoy. His topics are real world solutions to problems that don't appear at
first, but wind up being things you could and should do better. The illustrations are perfect to convey a visual, with a
bit of art to them, but not so cluttered as to prevent your "getting the picture" and knowing how to do what he is suggesting.
It is a double treat to find he single hands a Brewer designed Lazy Jack Schooner and understands all of those things that "real" cruisers must deal with and overcome.
His book is a joy, a simple pleasure to read, and an ideal gift for the nautical minded friends in your life.

This book is a "must read" for anyone interested in biographies and/or the Civil War. The author's unique viewpoint and comforatable
writing style make this a pleasure to read! His fresh perspective on a well-covered topic has the reader enthralled. Here
you begin to see and understand Sheridan not only as a Civil War General but also as a father, husband, and brother. Because
of the author's close association with the family, he relates personal details never before told. A fascinating story and
a must read book!!

Definitely. And you can too. Pick up a copy of this book and learn fundamental writing lessons. I had complained to co-workers
that I overuse "which." There's a section in this book about that problem. So buy it, and become a good writer. Soon everyone
will say, "You're such a good writer."

When I was in college, I kept a copy of the Practical Stylist at my desk wheneven I wrote term papers. It became a ritual
for me to reread the chapters on correcting bad sentences and writing good sentences. Between this book and his assemblage
of modern essays, The Essayist, Baker gave me a sense of what good writing looked like and sounded like.

A Mariner's Miscellany
My husband is an avid boater, sailboats really. He built his own ! Anyway, a tradition for Christmas is to purchase a "Mariner's Book of Days" for him. Based on this purchase, Amazon sent me an email to let me know about the "Mariner's Miscellany" book. I had not heard of it but figured since the author, Peter Spectre is also the author of the Book of Days, my husband might enjoy it for his birthday. Not only was he excited to get the book, he was especially happy as he too had never heard of the book. Amazon enabled me to get the perfect gift by offering ideas based on past purchases.

I don't normally have much patience for the sort of "book of lists" that often graces the bathroom--excuse me, the head.
But Peter Spectre's collection of a host of mariner's lists, myths, anecdotes, sayings, best of, worst of, be sure you don't
do THAT...well, it's hard to describe. You will be entertained, enlightened, and reminded. Fascinating facts abound, nautical
language is explained (the seven uses of "foul" or the 27 ways "dead" is used must surely set a record), and Spectre even
graces us with his opinion (literary reputation most deserved is Patrick O'Brian's; least deserved is...well, you buy the
book and find out). Practical knowledge, literary quotations, artistic allusions, and yes, those all important lists. No
boat, no sailor, should be without this gem. Most highly recommended.
