"Bitter Herbs and Honey"

This book, set in Winter Hill, New Jersey in 1916, opens on Rebecca "Becky" Levitsky, the future valedictorian of the senior class at Winter Hill High and the daughter of two Russian Jewish immigrants. It seems to her, that like that of her friend Annie Klein, her future, including work in her father's shop and marriage to Henry Braude, has been predetermined for her by her largely conservative parents. Becky however, while certain she dose not wish to follow the path laid out before her, posses no idea of her own where she could belong after graduation. All of this changes when she secretly begins dating Peter van Ruysdaal, a non-Jew, and realizes the new possibilities just opening up to women. She nurtures the wild idea of attending Barnard College to become a professor of ancient languages, but upon hearing this, her parents cite her religion as a reason to discard such a possibility along with her relationship with Peter. Each chapter chronicles a different Jewish holiday, beginning with Yom Kippur and continuing through the year back to Rosh Hashanah, as Becky fights prejudices and cultural misunderstandings in an attempt to reconcile her two worlds and find her place within both. Along with her heightening confidence and acceptance follows that of her people, and the book closes on a Jewish girl bound for college.

The question of what it means to be an American is addressed within the pages of this book. Becky begins as one completely immersed only in her own way of life, being Jewish, but as she mingles with others from different places, a cross-cultural trade of ideas begins. Though she learns it is impossible for her to live completely in both the Jewish and Christian worlds at once due to the limitations of the times, Becky finds that the people of her faith and those of the various others around them can live, work, and celebrate together without compromising their individual beliefs. This reveals that the true meaning of the word Americans is many people with different backgrounds, beliefs, and ideas, all working together in the same place towards the preservation of one common goal, freedom.

This author is undoubtedly skilled and naturally artistic. The book is an example of realistic nature sketches without the step by step instruction you would expect. It teaches no shape forms, no definitive skills just highlights and pointers. The detail it teaches is invaluable but NOT for your basic beginning drawer or artist. Read for developing further skills.

MIscharacterizations of hunter-gathering cave people

Review Date: 2008-01-16
The premise is that the little girl Twinkle lives in a cave with her mother and father, named Hairy Man and Tender Eyes respectively. Her dog is Big Brawn and is her only playmate, as the nearest child lives seven hills away. They wear skins and Hairy Man hunts and fishes for their food.
After some time, Twinkle grows despondent and no one can determine what was wrong with her. Even the magic potions created by the aged Doctor Tanglebeard cannot cure her depression. Finally, her mother took some strips of reindeer fur and tied them up into a humanoid shape, making the first doll. This made Twinkle happy and she slept with it every night.
This book is not one that I would read to my daughter, the references to the people sound odd, and the social structure is inaccurate. Primitive people did not live that far apart, hunters live together in small groups to increase the efficiency of the hunt and defend themselves from predators. While the end result has some value, the route there is not one I would like to follow.

Book is detailed for the do it yourselfer with little or no prior experience. If your looking for more, such as performance applications, this book does not have much. I am an ASE certified mechanic, and I am disappointed in this book. Nice general information, but not much more. For example, almost no info on improving Magnum RT cylinder head port flow.

The story tells us how a group of animals get their name. The book talked about a swarm of bees, a gaggle of geese and a school of fish. Hawks mostly fly alone. They fly together for long distances like migration. When they fly together the group is called a kettle of hawks because it looks like they are flying in a kettle of hot air. I liked the story because it has lots of interesting information.

Philosophical, not always successfully

I saw this play recently and i think it was not helped by a very declamatory actor in the lead. It is a one-person play that tries to wrestle with some big questions in an unusual way. It felt a little dry, but I applaud the effort and I'd like to see a production of it with an actor who could just honestly talk to an audience and show us his vulnerable side as he deals with feeling helpless, worthless and possible near the end of his life.

Under the shadow of your brother

Review Date: 2005-04-03
Many families have some type of inequality that exists between siblings. One sister or brother is more popular than their siblings, one better looking, one smarter, or one more athletic.

This book focuses on a fifteen year old boy living in the shadow of his older brother, and that older brother is more popular, better looking, smarter, and more athletic. That's quite a bit to live up to.

Brad, the pimple-faced main character, is not without his talents. He is an excellent musician, although he quits playing his sax after his brother Tom "surprised" him by showing up at his first live gig. When Brad saw Tom he became so nervous that he completely blew it, and felt like the shadow he was under had grown longer.

The Brad spends the summer with his aunt in Albuquerque (he's from New Jersey), and being away from Tom's crushing shadow, begins to find himself as a unique individual. He discovers that he is Brad Randolph. Period. Not Brad, Tom's brother.

Mulligan does a good job portraying Brad. His character, his fears, and his deeply imbedded insecurities were extremely believable. There were only a few things that puzzled me. Brad had a best friend back home, Celeste, but never expressed romantic interest in her or any other girls - not while he was in Jersey, and not while he was in Albuquerque. His aunt didn't even wonder whether or not he had a girlfriend. This seems to be a rather glaring omission, as insecurities are generally #2 on a teenager's "Board of Worries". #1 is sex, and all that relates to it: dating, crushes, etc.

That aside, it was an enjoyable, entertaining, quick and easy read.
