This is a great reference manual for anyone who loves dinosaurs. Hundreds of species and tons of useful information. My only dissapointment was the backing of the book, its paperback, not very appropiate for such a massive book.

Reviewed by William Phenn for Reader Views (9/06)

A compassionate woman with a flair for life, living, and all her surroundings, Deborah Shepard was born in California and now lives in Washington State with her husband of 32 years. She has been writing for over 30 years and has worked in child development since 1977. She has taught in the US Army Child Development Center both in California and Washington and has even had her own FCC home for children. This experience coupled with living on the beautiful shores of the mighty Pacific Ocean, have been her inspiration for the many emotionally-charged pages.

"The Pages of Time" is a collection of Deborah's prose and poetry that she has written over time. It is a very warm and wonderful work filled with stories of Fairies, Angels, dreams and fantasies. From the first untitled poem to the last utopia, Ms. Shepard takes the reader on a journey through time. Endless time and fantasy abound when there is no shortage of imagination. Deborah has brought her thoughts to these pages in a manner that is interesting and captivating.

. . . "To set my eyes with your breaths nigh, I shall love thee till everlasting doves soar high." is one of my favorite passages in this very well-written little collection.

"The Pages of Time" only has 80 pages and is a very easy read. It is just the thing for sitting by a fire with milk and cookies and the little ones huddled around. I enjoyed "The Pages of Time" very much and the only problem with it is the lack of titles for the wonderfully written poetry. "The Pages of Time" has all the ingredients of a very good book. A quirk that detracted from its excellence, no titles for poems, caused me a bit of annoyance when referring to a particular poem. Other than that, I gave it a very high B+ rating.

Not as good as the first two, but a worthy book

The People's Almanacs were incredibly important to me growing up. My parents had the first two almanacs, and through them I learned about everything from historical events to inventions, religion to sex, movie trivia to more about sports than I ever actually cared about. The hundreds upon hundreds of pages of information packed into each book ended up being read and re-read numerous times over the years, and I still have the original copies in my home today.

So I was excited to find out there was a third volume out there. I'm rather sad to say that this one wasn't quite as good as the other two. It wasn't as long, and it seemed as though the editors were rather stretching for content this time around.

Still, I found it to be a very informative read. I particularly liked the stories of real-life castaways and how they survived, bios of famous gangsters, and the descriptions of unusual collections. The articles came across as well-researched (as always) and covered a variety of aspects of human existence. This third almanac was true to the format, too, with a nice array of illustrations to perk up the text a bit.

Overall, while I didn't like this one as much as the first two, the third People's Almanac is definitely staying on the shelf with the other two.

I had never read a book about the drive for women's suffrage, and was rather dismayed to realize this was a book for "younger readers" but I went ahead and read it anyway and was rather caught up in the story. My time could have been worse spent, and if I were 60 years younger I would have given this five stars!

Naturopath Recommended, Patient Approved

Here is one of the most readable and enjoyable homeopathic books ever written. The author has chosen twenty-two medicinal plants and devoted a chapter to each one.

While doctors may possess the ability to write out prescriptions for sick persons, they may not posses that other form of ability which enables them to write readable books. It is, therefore, all the more refreshing to find both these abilities combined in one individual. A Physician's Posy seems more in the nature of "belles lettres" than a treatise on healing the sick. In its pages, the reader will encounter no pseudo-scientific jargon nor multi-syllabic words which no one can pronounce -- let alone remember.

Dr. Shephard has written a fascinating history of her chosen plants and includes personal anecdotes that make her book a joy to read.

An ordinary day until suddenly, three polar bears start to chase my friend and I. We run and run. We cross water to escape. We think all is well. Then here they are surrounding us! With three little, very important words we relax. What could they have said? You must read this book. What a delight and surprise!

Good ideas for kids' parties!

There are 5 party examples in the book with ideas on invitations, decorations, food & drink, crafts & games. There are pictures and quotes from the book throughout. There are sketches of each of the Friends in the back of the book which could be used for games or decorations. One party is for Easter and gives recipes to make homemade dyes. Cute book although a bit old-fashioned.

PORTRAIT OF A TRAGEDY America and the Vietnam War
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2002-02-15
Our town librarian asked me to take this book home and rate it. As a Vietnam vet, she was curious for my review and reaction. I must say the book is presented in a dispassionate way, but chronicles the movement of our involvement in this far Asian country over the years, as young people need to know about. I was a helicopter pilot in the Mekong Delta, stationed at Vinh Long with the 175th Outlaws, one of the most affectionate helicopter units in-country. I am very familiar with many of the episodes and locales featured in the book. I would recommend PORTRAIT OF A TRAGEDY as an historical overview of the conflict, but it lacks the passion of the years describing all that went on--there and in the USA. It is well constructed, and for those people who cannot figure why we ever got involved in this entanglement, it could present the situation in a rational dialogue for them to think about. My book centers on the experiences of flying helicopters and the camaraderie experienced by the Army aviators in this war.
