The prettiest version of this folktale!
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.

John Langstaff might have won the Caldecott for his version but in my opinion ( as well as my students') the pictures and story are much more appealing in Wendy Watson's Frog Went A-Courting. This Folktale has been passed down for generations in the United States. It is found all over today, but in many diferent versions. That is because people changed it as they told/sang it to others. It's the story of a frog who "Went A- Courting" to ask Miss Mouese if she would marry him. After getting her Uncle Rat's consent( Without her uncle rats consent "she couldn't marry the president")they buy her dress and held the Wedding. In comes an Old Bobcat to attempt to destroy the Wedding. Does he...? Read and find out. I also like this version of Frog Went A-COurting because it allows the children to sing along and interact with the story (Every other line allows them to say "Um-hmm).Many versions that I have seen do not allow the children to be involved. This also makes a great Music lesson, and there are tapes available with this Folktale sung on it.

Ganghi Through a Child's Eyes

This book was insightful and inspiring. As someone who did not know much about Mahatma Gandhi, it gave a firsthand look at the man through a child's eyes who was about 10 years old. The memoirs were told by the now adult son of Ghandhi's top secretary.

Living Proof that Gandhi's ideas live on
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-04-30
I grew up and was educated in India with little knowledge or understanding of Gandhi life, work, and deep international influence. My teachers, most of whom were Christians, looked down on what they considered Gandhi's unsophisticated ways.

College in India was no better than school, with the exception of a gentle Physics professor who introduced me to Gandhi's ideas on Economics. I went on to study Gandhi's ideas more closely, read his autobiography, and most recently came upon this book. Reading it has made me very very happy!

Mark Shepard has done a wonderful job visiting with, interviewing, and summarizing the efforts of Gandhian activists in India (with a last chapter taking a quick look at activities of Gandhians worldwide). Whether it is the Peace Army preventing religious riots, or the New Dawn community pooling resources and getting rid of moneylenders and other abusers of authority, each account brilliantly and vividly informs and inspires.

Great reading!

Wali Dad is my all-time favorite of Aaron's books for children (and they are all a close race!). The comic book style and quality of the illustrations are a pure delight, and the story telling is true and compelling. Do not miss the joy of reading this book to yourself and to any children you know.

"Global Expressions" Great Ideas for Decorating!
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2001-11-28
Ms. Shepard's "Global Expressions, Decorating With Fabrics From Around the World" is a terrific selection for anyone interested in bringing the beauty of fabrics from around the world into their home. Similar to Ms. Shepard's "African Accents", the decorating and crafts projects are described clearly with easy-to-follow instructions. The beautiful photographs are a pleasure to look through and provide creative inspiration to show how anyone could use the stylish, yet practical decorating ideas in this book to accent their own personal style.

This book is a definite must-have item for anyone with decorative fabric sitting on a shelf just waiting to be used. One of my favorite projects, the Japanese Print Accent Fan, was the perfect centerpiece for my table at Thanksgiving. My next project will be an Indonesian Batik Pillow. "Global Expressions" provides excellent guidance to anyone wishing to create a "Global Eclectic" décor for their home, while also being informative on the cultural and historical significance of the crafts and artistry of diverse cultures throughout the world. I continue to enjoy it, and highly recommend it!

K. Grahame Examines Childhood
Helpful Votes: 20 out of 20 total.
Review Date: 2001-03-16
Kenneth Grahame's rich, elegant writing make "The Golden Age" a joy to read and reread. While it is a story of children in late Victorian England, it is not a childish book. Rather, it is an examination of how children view the world and are confounded by the actions of the adults around them. Grahame had a wonderful knack for presenting the child's point of view without being cutesy or condescending - no other author has as successfully done this. Nor does he present the typical Victorian view that children are all little angels and always innocent. All adults should read this book - it makes one stop and examine one's priorities and will encourage you recapture a zest for life and imagination.

I love this book!!!

This book is a touching, sweet story that every mother should read to her child. Hattie is a little girl with many stuffed animals, and all of them need to fit into her bed. The book is a counting book, that counts through all ten of the animals. Sometimes educational books can be tiring... However, it is imaginative and funny... between bears that chew cutains and closets filled with chickens, both author and illustrator should be very proud of their work. My only wish is that it could be longer!

My daughter and I love this beautiful story. The illustrations are very calming and pleasing to the eye, the story has a consistant, assuring flow of the grandmother's love of her grandchild as well as her love for nature. Not only does it bring back warm childhood memories for me, it is an inspiration to my future as a grandmother.
