own perserverance, his dream comes true.

This is a synthesis of two one-volume works: Fodor's Encyclopaedia of Psychic Science and Spence's Encyclopaedia of Occultism.
But it also surpasses them by revisions and additional up-to-date information. Although I haven't read the entire two volumes,
I must say that I'm impressed by the comprehensive nature of the set. It includes articles about modern occult magicians
like Isaac Bonewits and doesn't leave out critics of the paranormal such as James Randi. Also check out the 4-vol. Encyclopedia
of Philosophy, 24-vol. Man, Myth & Magic (Cavendish, editor), 2-vol. Encyclopedia of Freemasonry by Albert Mackey, and Bernard
McGinn's series of books on Western Mysticism. All recommended.

It is hard to describe the feeling I encountered when I first came across this incredible reference in the halls of a high
school library while working as a substitute and having some free time. At first I was rightly amused that such a tome would
be present in a collection of that scope surely limited and censured by the schools board, but upon a closer examination it
occurred to me that this was no mere book of odd facts and superstitions, but a source of immense wealth and startling detail.
I began to test the volume by thinking of some place, person or order of which I had personal knowledge and looking it up
to see how ridiculous the entry might be, only to be startled by the accuracy and sheer amount of information that vastly
eclipsed my own very limited understanding.
In all honesty I began hatching a plan by which I might pilfer these amazing volumes, feeling a sense of anger upon realizing that the books, untouched by so much as a smudgy fingerprint were going to waist in a library of this computer age where students enter only to instant message their friends in study hall, until it occurred to me that the volumes were there for some purpose unbeknownst to me, that some student might wander across the volumes on accident while doing a research paper on Egypt and finding themselves attracted to the figure of Tutankhamen, and be introduced to a world view and appreciation of varied ways in which people come to term with the subtleties of matter, and awake to a new understanding of their environment, rich with color and significance, perhaps even being inspired to do further study on their own. After considering this possibility any thought of taking the texts for my own of course vanished.
Later I was able to procure the volumes at the right time and price from this very website, and have come to accept them as an indispensable tool supporting my own scholarly endeavors.
Bare in mind that the name Encyclopedia is accurate, and this collection is not, nor does it claim to be the start and finish of information on any subject covered, but as a beginning place for knowledge about the figures and events within, I have not seen it's equal. But don't take my word for it. See if you can find one in your cities library or university and take a look yourself. If you are a serious student of the mysteries or even a casual dabbler of many disciplines, you will see the value in them, and understand my high praise.

Outstanding description of explorers to the new world after Columbus. Puts the voyages and their countries motives into perspective
with clear and concise chrolological account. Highly recommended for the 4th grade explorers unit, and from the 3rd grade
through the 7th grade. An excellent historical book and contains good color illustrations. I would recommend it to students
from the 3rd grade through the 7th grade, and wish to include a recommendation for teachers, as well.

This text is lengthier than the Constitution book. I believe it can still be easily read and discussed in two class periods.
The text can be easily separated between the Conquistadors and other French & English explorers. This book covers quite a
few explorers so, a graphic organizer that lists the names of the men would be helpful for students to keep information during
the story.

This book compiles all of the research that has accumulated over the past 50 years on the academic and emotional effects on
students of retaining them. Although it is considered a 'research' book, it is an easy and compelling read. Any parent or
teacher who is considering retaining a student should pay careful attention to the research findings in this book. After reading
it, you can only come to one conclusion: Retention is a form of educational malpractice and akin to the practice of bloodletting
in the medical profession. That is, we know it doesn't work, that it does more harm than good, and yet we continue with the
practice anyway.

This collection contains 8 of Pulitzer-prizewinning Sam Shepard's best plays. Shepard has a way of capturing our imagination
with a wild collection of characters in even wilder stories. "Fool For Love", "Angel City", "Geography of a Horse Dreamer",
"Action", "Cowboy Mouth", Seduced", "Suicide in B", "Melodrama Play".
Shepard is one of the great American voices in theatre. These are all classics that deserve to be remembered and studied.

With this collection, Shepard demonstrates his remarkable ability to portray America in the realistic ways most contemporary
authors/playwrights/poets are afraid to do. The dialogue is captivating and moving, and the action is fast-paced. Definetely
an excellent buy.

Joan Frank gives those years in the Seventies when people tried to live in sweet harmony with each other and with nature their
due. She achieves just the right distance - a backward glance without sentiment. Her characters are young and hopeful; the
landscape, still rural and open. Time happens! And Frank doesn't undercut her beautifully written narrative and her people
with either nostalgia, cliche or condescension.

An epic story to inspire young women.

I first read Gudrun when I was twelve years old. I searched for a copy of this book for ten years. And yet, the story is
so clear to me. The tale of Gudrun is more than a mere romantic story of knights and a beautiful princess. What impressed
me about this book, even at twelve years old, were the strong female characters. Gudrun's mother, widowed on the day of her
daughter's betrowthal, waited ten years to bring justice to those who stole all that was precious to her. The memory of Gudrun,
imprisoned and forced by the Queen of Normandy to wash clothes in the icy river, year after year. Never yeilding to the demand
that she willingly marry the Prince. Even the young lady in waiting, taken with Gudrun, who fell in love with a Norman and
betrayed her Princess gives us insight into the strength and weakness of women.

This book is in danger of becoming totally forgotten. Gudrun is an unique survival in Medieval literature. This epic is the
tale of the kidnapped Princess Gudrun whose captors intend for her to marry the Prince of Normandy, although she is already
betrothed to King Herdwig. Central to this epic is the titanic contest of wills between the Queen of Normandy and Gudrun.
Originally written in High Medieval German, this version of the epic was carefully translated into modern German in the 1920's
and was hailed as a triumph. However, the author, novelist and poet Alma Johanna Koenig was deported as a Jew after the takeover
of her native Austria and died in 1942 at Minsk Concentration camp. Anthea Bell translated the surviving work into English
keeping the Beauty and Poetry of Koenig's work. Although Koeing intended this book for young people, it rings true with all
the depth and glory of the Medieval original. This book is not easily avaliable but please find the book, many Libraies have
it, and keep alive the legacy of beauty that the Nazis couldn't destroy

Told by rhyme; the reader watches a mother and child prepare and walk over to a party. They see spooky things (well not really);
play games and have all sorts of fun.
Eventually, it ends with everybody screaming BOO and they turn on the lights and take off the masks.
There is one final surprise!
It's a fun book with a good rhythm for bed time. The artwork is ok as it did make my daughter want to look at it a couple times.

Seven drunk nurses are attacked by seven twelve year olds on customized Schwinns. A young man covers a nude female corpse
with hundred dollar bills and plays Rolling Stones songs to her just before he burns her in the bathtub. A bored guitarist
reaches orgasm with his Gibson. A traveler is tormented by a dead raven's feather. These and other stories and poetry make
up playwright Sam Shepard's first foray into fiction and poetry (originally published in 1973). His major themes here include
blood and violence, sex, love, and America. For any Shepard fan, this is a must-read. Shepard's images of America--the dry,
flat desert, the endless highway, the seedy motel--are so dead-on that we are right there with his characters, looking over
their shoulders as they commit sins and/or try to find some good in this world. Read it with Shepard's CRUISING PARADISE and
MOTEL CHRONICLES.

Sam Shepard is one of the unheralded geniuses in American literature. This book, his first foray as far as I know into a
'scrap book' style of fiction, is beautiful, delicate, powerful, intimitely connected to the natural world and perhaps the
world of spirits, as well as a pre-cursor to his future prose, poems and plays. If you wish to experience an America that
has for the most part vanished for forever, an America that is rarely talked about in truth on our cable, radio, and internet,
then pick up either this book, Motel Chronicles, or Cruising Paradise. All three are unique companion pieces, spread some
twenty five years apart in publication, and well worth owning.

On the way home from the dentist, his luck turned for the better. He discovered something really fantastic. When he gritted his teeth together he could hear a radio and it sounded as though it were playing inside his head. It was his new fillings acting as a radio receiver. He figured out how to make it louder and softer and how to change stations by rubbing his teeth together.
What a great thing to have. You could listen to the radio in class and no one would know or even in bed before going to sleep.
It wasn't until later when he was at home that he found out the most wonderful thing of all. He could hear people's thoughts.
(I used this book for booktalks in the schools and the kids really were intrigued by it.)
