THis book was a good selection of recipies revolving around the origonal pooh books. Tho they were not origonaly from Winnie the Pooh or the House at pooh Corner or the Two Books of Poems that A. A. Milne wrote about this silly old bear, they were collected carefuly to surround the stories. These books are smaller in content but very compriable to the (3) three books by V. H. Ellison with recipies in them about Pooh and his friends. THey are diffrent recipies and very taty at that!

I love to cook and where I work we have a yearly Tea Party in which we donate the proceeds to a local charity. I have used several of the recipes in this book and have only received rave reviews. The illustrations and poems are an extra delight. I highly recommend this book.

This is the most charming and delightful little recipe book I've ever bought! I needed cookbooks representing cultures from around the world for a senior high school Multicultural Studies class that I teach and thought it would be fun to include English teatime snacks. I got this book and decided to keep it for myself. The recipes are fun and easy. Try the honeycake and scones for breakfast or snack-time. I recommend this for children and adults.

The Wolfhound is the story of a young boy who finds a lost Borzoi dog, and returns it to the Tzar at great personal risk. This story teaches kindness, integrity & courage. Despite the bland review given to the book 'officially', it is books like this one that, taken as a steady diet in a child's youth, develop character traits much desired in people! Children raised on stories such as this (with BEAUTIFUL illustrations) will not likely be found mistreating animals, & integrity and respect for life will become ingrained in their hearts! My children LOVED this book,it is one of our treasures! It encourages a love of good art in addition to the character building attributes of books like this. To label this story 'weak' is both short-sighted and ill-informed.

A wonderful, simple story of peasant boy that saves dog owned by aristocrat and the boy's reward. The illustrations are absolutely luminous and well worth the low price of the book. If you collect children's books, dog books, or want a first dog book for a child, buy this book.

This book is a must for borzoi lovers of all ages. The story is simple and touching. And the lovely illustrations capture the gentle beauty and magic of this very special breed--right down to the borzoi's intelligent, loving gaze.

This book was absolutely wonderful. It is a collection of poetry written by A.A. Milne. My favorite was 'A bear no matter how he tries/ grows tubby without exercise' I had heard that line before, but never realized that it is the beginning of an 80 line poem where Edward Bear is worried about his weight. He ends up meeting the King of France who is very tubby as well. After this meeting, He is comfortable with his tubbiness. There are also poems about racing water droplets, fishing, knights and ladies, James James Morrison Morrison and more.

Beautifully Written!

If you loved When We Were Very Young and Now We Are Six, you will love The World of Christopher Robin. Like The World of Pooh, it has wonderful color illustrations. Unlike The World of Pooh, it is a book of poetry. The poems are lovely. One of the most widely known poem "Us Two" or as I like to call it "Wherever I am there's always Pooh" is in this great book. The poems are great for reading as a bedtime story or on a rainy day. The drawings of E. H. Shepard always add to the fun of reading this perfect book. Every A.A. Milne or Winnie-the-Pooh fan should buy this book to add to their collection of Pooh books and memorobilia.

Magical book

The 13th is Magic has haunted my imagination since I read it as a child more than 50 years ago. I came back to it on discovering recently that The Cat's Fugue is a real piece of music by Scarlatti (Sonata 30 in Kirkpatrick numbering). It has become one of my favorites. Other memorable associations are with whistling, pennies, and Robert Heinlein's story The Unpleasant Profession of Jonathan Hoag (also involving a non-existent floor in a building).

Yes, indeed, The 13th is Magic needs to be brought back into print, or else the copyright laws brought back to sanity. Under the old rules (28 years, renewable for another 28), its copyright would have run from 1950 to 2006. Now I don't even know how long it is protected (author's lifetime plus 75 years=??, but certainly later than 2025), to the profit of nobody, not the author, not the publishers, and especially not the children.

This is a book that definitely should come back in print!

My favorite book as a middle-schooler, it introduced me to fantasy for children in a me (to me) truly exotic location--New York City. How exciting it is to remember Merlin the black cat, who leads young Jill and and her brother Ronnie on magical adventures in Central Park, in a medieval dragon-"infested" castle, among the constellations, with Indian head pennies come to life, and much more. And it's funny too!

This is a terrific book. Acting is a craft, so like any other craft it has it's changes. It should come as no surprise that there are growing number of facets where knowledge can give you an edge. No actor can be expected to know everything. Enter John Shepard. Here's a book that spells out the variety of camera work out there. Should you find yourself up for a commercial, industrial, creating CD Roms, Soap Opera, film, or episodic TV, Shepard has a chapter on each one. Everything, from what you wear to the details of auditioning techniques, is laid out. Do you expect to be working on location? Shepard tells you what you can expect as well as what's expected of you. There are sample scripts, scenes to practice and exercises to sharpen your skills. This book is full of good stuff.

My son loved this book! As the recent "winner" of a newborn baby sister, my two-and-a-half year-old son was most interested in any book that addressed his concerns. He asked Mommy and Daddy to read THIS book night after night, and it was evident that it helped him with his own feelings of anxiety, and love, for his new sister. It's a very enjoyable book, with lovely pictures

A treasure trove of prayer and tradition
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-10-06
This book is exactly what I have been looking for. A guide to assist me in teaching my children some basic prayers and the appropriate time to recite them. The thirteen blessings are presented in an easy to read Hebrew font, in beautifully translated English. Each blessing is also transliterated for those not able to read the Hebrew. The English translations are not formal or stiff at all. They are rendered in language that a child will understand and appreciate. I'm not crazy about the illustrations but they do show a loving family participating in everyday activities and incorporating Judaism into their lives. I can't wait to share it with my children.

Hebrew Prayer made simple!

Edwards' book offers the reader, of any age, a simplistic, yet refined approach to Hebrew prayer. She offers both the traditional Hebrew, as well as a English translation, coupled with striking illustrations that show the deeper meaning of each prayer. Any child or adult who is even slightly interested in Hebrew prayer will treasure this book.

Insightfully charts the evolution of an artist

Review Date: 2000-03-14
All of the great American playwrights, I find Shepard to be the most elusive. Unlike many of his predecessors, Shepard doesn't connnect all the dots; his characters don't stay put, his plots are slippery, and even his themes are sometimes difficult to pin down. Watching or reading a Shepard play is like living on a fault line--you never know when the ground will give way or where you'll finally end up. Which is why I so appreciated A BODY ACROSS THE MAP. It is cogent, well-written, and clarifies, without over-simplifying--some of the more mysterious aspects of Shepard's work. Also, by examining the father-son conflict in plays written over a twenty year span, it skillfully reveals how Shepard's view of the world, his ideas regarding masculinity, and his perceptions of women have substantially changed. I was particularly impressed by the author's analyses of THE TOOTH OF CRIME, TRUE WEST, and A LIE OF THE MIND.

A Highly Insightful Commentary

Review Date: 2000-04-12
Being a graduate theatre student, I've read almost all of Shepard's plays and a great deal of Shepard criticism, and consider this book to be among the most insightful. From the title, I expected a narrow examination of character and conflict. But, in fact, the book is much more than that. It also charts--in precise structural and thematic terms--Shepard's metamohposis from a purely instinctual (and "speed"-driven) young playwright to an iconoclastic storyteller in firm control of his craft. This is a book for both those who have only recently discovered Shepard's work and those (like myself) who thought that they had already cracked the code.

Brother Rabbit outwits a crocodile several times
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-02
A favorite theme in Cambodian folktales is that of a small but clever animal getting the better of someone who is stronger and meaner but not quite as smart. In explaining the background of this story authors Minfong Ho and Saphan Ros tell us how farmers and villagers in Cambodian society saw themselves as being small and weak in comparison to the powerful landlords, soldiers, and kings above them. Ho and Ros also see "Brother Rabbit" as being particularly appropriate given the way Cambodia had been the pawn of larger nations during the Vietnam War and then suffered under the despotic rule of the Khmer Rouge. Consequently, stories in which the tables were turned and the weak came out on top were particular beloved and told by grandparents to village children in the cool of the evening or performed as folk plays called "jikay."

The story tells how one day Brother Rabbit was hopping along one morning when he spied a patch of tender rice seedlings being planted in a field across the river. The problem was how to get across the river to steal into the field for a feast and when a crocodile comes swimming along Brother Rabbit believes he can get a free ride across. However, that only proves to the first encounter between the pair and what I especially like about the story is that Brother Rabbit does not get the better of crocodile just once, but repeatedly in the telling of the tale, as well as an elephant. Many readers will obviously be reminded of Brer Rabbit from the tales of Uncle Remus. "Brother Rabbit" has illustrations by Jennifer Hewitson, which were done in watercolor paints and inks that artfully captures the culture from whence this tale sprang.

A clever rabbit outwits a vicious crocodile

Review Date: 1999-04-10
This is a charming and well written cambodian folk tale about a clever rabbit that manages to outwit a much larger and ferocious crocodile. The message is brains over brawn, a theme most children easily relate to. Adults will also enjoy the intelligence and wit of the prose as well as the colorful and and detailed illustrations.
