There are those of us who would just like to use the UNIX operating system. Then there are those curious people that want to know what are the inode is, and the Super block is, and how is the directory structure made?
Most of us would be satisfied, if someone said the inode was a file. Then there are those, who say "Oh know you don't. What is its structure?" I say, "just read Unix Internals"

nifty, for lack of a better word

Informative. Reads like a college text. Excellent in citing references at the end of each chapter. I couldn't help but notice 'exercises' at the end of each chapter. It filled me in on a few things. Covers quite a bit of history, focusing mainly on BSD and SVR4.

As the previous reviewer has noted this book is hard to put down. I was most impressed with the author's ability to successfully create a colorful (as in inflection-filled) and thus dynamic commentary. As to the somewhat transparent but, as highlited in the title, central topic, socialism, I feel this book has equally shown the positive and the negative consequences of its application all the while keeping true to its satire.

Shaw's last, and in my opinion, best satire, An Unsocial Socialist is a wonderful book that is sadly not well known. The plot is pulls you in and the book spawned an equally great play, "Smash". I couldn't put it down until I finished it.

Vineyard Harvest:
A Year of Good Food on
Martha's Vineyard
By Tina Miller with Christie Mathewson
Photography by Alison Shaw

This cookbook concentrates on the simple and pure. This simplicity is evidenced by uncomplicated, relatively short recipes. The book is a seasonal sequence of tempting dishes prepared from the bounty springing from the seas and soils of Massachusetts' Martha's Vineyard. Between many of the recipes are profiles of some of the caring citizens of the island.

Here's some recipe samplings:

Corn-Crusted Calamari with Roasted Red Pepper Remoulade -
With the simple ingredients, of cornmeal and cornstarch, the calamari is cooked. The Remoulade contains capers, chopped cornichons, garlic, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard and a touch of cayenne.

Strawberries with Sweet Crème Fraiche -
Just add sugar, lemon juice, heavy cream, sugar and vanilla.

Martha's Vineyard Mock Maki -
Combines cucumbers, lobster meat, red bell pepper, pickled ginger and sprouts. An accompanying dipping sauce contains soy sauce, lime, sesame oil, mirin and chopped scallions.

Zucchini and Tomato Casserole with an Asiago Crust -
Blend with shallot, bread crumbs, olive oil, seasoning and fresh basil.

Bumper-Crop Cucumber salad -
Calls for red onion, fresh dill, crème fraiche, lemon juice, olive oil and seasoning

Sold-Out Grilled Lobsters with Lime Butter -
Seems simplest of all - limes, lime zest, limes quartered and butter.

Watermelon and Champagne Parfait -
Mix raspberries, lemon zest, champagne and Chambord liqueur.

Broccoli Soup with Essence of Morels -
This is a mixture of olive oil, onion, chicken broth, seasoning, grated nutmeg and fresh spinach leaves

Great Pond Oyster Pan Stew -
Use butter, onion, a leek, cream sherry, a little ketchup, shucked oysters with their liquor, heavy cream, seasoning and a few dashes of hot sauce

Morning Glory Farm Pumpkin Crème Brulee -
Calls for heavy cream, allspice, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, eggs and sugar.

Vineyard Lobster Salad with Asian Twist -
Combine olive oil, sesame oil, fresh ginger, scallions, mirin, lemon juice, light soy sauce and mayonnaise

Two Winter Pizzas -
Smoked Salmon Roasted Red Onion Pizza:
Plus Crème Fraiche, fresh tarragon, olive oil and capers.
Spinach and Goat Cheese Pizza:
Plus red onion, olive oil, spinach leaves, fresh rosemary, parsley and garlic.

Red Cabbage Salad with Blue Cheese, Walnuts and Oranges --
Combine Orange juice, balsamic vinegar and olive oil for the dressing

Portuguese Codfish with Linguica and Littlenecks -
This calls for olive oil, onion, fresh thyme, clam broth, a diced tomato and tomato paste.

Unlike the previous reviewer I think the humour works though the jokes don't. Unfortunately in the sequel Shaw keeps the jokes and loses the humour. It's a total turkey don't bother with it. I think this is a great book though and routinely recommend it.

I'll begin by stating that I think Bob Shaw to be one of the greatest SF writers ever (bar none). Bearing my bias in mind 'Who Goes Here' is a clever, easy to read and well plotted novel. I reluctantly admit it to be slightly less enjoyable than some of the author's other works because often the book's humour doesn't quite work. Still, you wouldn't go wrong to pick this up provided you appreciate intelligent writing, original ideas and minimal cliches.

An inspirational and informative account of one woman's story of living with a disbility and the obstacles she and others have encountered trying to overcome the "Stereotype" of being labled as disabled. Her stories are funny yet thought provoking and inspirational. It makes us take a look at ourselves and how society views people who are disabled.. The Author also sends us all the message that at any given time , we could become either visually impaired or disabled while encouraging us to take nothing in this life forgranted, encouraging us to count our blessings, and to live life to the fullest.

Big Questions
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2005-01-20
George Carey wrote this book about two years prior to enthronement as the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury. It recaps the basic timeless Christian truths. In doing so it addresses some of the BIG QUESTIONS:

Was God needed to get the Universe started?
What is the case against the God hypothesis?
With so much wrong in the world how can there be a personal and loving God?
If God exists, how can we find him?

Carey discusses the Greek philosophical approach of trying to reason one's way to a knowledge of God. Toward the end he recommends the advantages of the Hebraic tradition of obediently following "the one who goes before" to find the Almighty. The Archbishop suggests this more practical approach of following is more fruitful. As Carey puts it : "This Jesus, we say, is worth following. He is the human face of God. Follow him and you will find God."

Doubt and belief...

Review Date: 2004-02-29
The current Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams is noted for being a scholar and theologian. The prior Archbishop, George Carey, was not heralded as an academic of the same nature (which is somewhat surprising, given that he was a professor of theology), but was nonetheless a practical theologian of some skill, as this text, `Why I Believe in a Personal God: The Credibility of Faith in a Doubting Culture', written at the beginning of Carey's tenure as Cantaur, proves.

Carey starts out by asking the big question - is it even possible for intelligent people in the modern world to believe in God, any god? Carey confesses, for the comfort of his readers, something that might be rather shocking at first glance to many - he himself never found it easy to believe in God. His life is one of faith in the face of doubt and struggle, and he shares much of this struggle and process toward God in the text. Some of the pieces that make belief in God less accessible than in previous times (perhaps) is the increasing isolation of the individual and secularisation of society. There is also the multiplicity of value systems, with no solid foundation for all of society to hold to with regard to belief in the divine.

Carey looks at science, sociology, and psychology as well as theology in developing the case first against God and then for recognition of God who remains a personal and companion God even in the face of paradox and difficult questioning. Carey develops a case against secular materialism (not quite the same thing as secular humanism, but a close companion) as being too limiting and itself grounded in nothing more substantial than circular observations and reasoning; this does not in and of itself make a convincing argument for religion and faith (or Christianity in particular), but it does serve to level the playing field a bit.

Carey writes in accessible and interesting language. He doesn't give great detail about the pieces of his argument, which might disappoint the more scholarly, but this is intentional. The average reader, seeking the mind of the archbishop on matters of faith and doubt, need not concern herself or himself with all the intricacies of modern physics and psychological theory to get a reasonable grasp on Carey's line of thought.

Wilt Chamberlain... The "Loser"
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2003-03-06
I feel that this book truly portrays the life of an African-American superstar in the 60's and 70's. He is a bit egotistical at times, but is always truthful (except for the part about all the women). All through his career, he is called a loser because of what his team is accomplishing and not him. In his first several years, his teams consistently played the Celtics in the playoffs, and instead of the Warriors vs. the Celtics, it became Bill Russel vs. Wilt Chamberlain. Wilt would consistently beat out Russel in every category, yet his team would still lose. When this happened, Wilt was called the loser. He was told that Russel schooled him time and time again, when really, it was the other way around.
This book accurately portrays what it would be like to face the "Loser" label your whole life. It wasn't fair at all, but Wilt successfully had a good season after another. I definately reccomend this book to anyone who likes success stories or if you like sports biographies. In fact, I recommend it to anybody

Over twenty-five years ago, Wilt Chamberlain took the belief that professional athletes are dumb and flushed it like a loose stool. In this book, he shares truths about his groundbreaking NBA salaries, his views on dating, and other famous basketball personalities. His sense of humor entertains his readers, while his intelligence, clearly evidenced by his vocabulary, constantly enlightens. For everyone old enough to vote, this book will be a wonderful experience.

Do you know how awful it is that this book is out of print? I found a copy at the library, and read it in one night -- it's wonderful! The writing style is definitely early L'Engle, reminiscent of The Small Rain. The theme isn't quite as evident as it is in later novels . . . but it's still a delightful read.

The characters are interesting -- both the "younger incarnations", Virginia Bowen Porcher and Mimi Oppenheimer (wasn't there a Renier in there somewhere?), and the characters whom we haven't seen before: Emliy Bowen, Abe Fielding, Kaarlo . . .

The plot in brief: Emily's husband Courtney used to be a professor at a university, and he resigned. They're spending the winter holidays in France, not many years after World War II ended. From there, it's the usual L'Engle family-in-conflict. Vee, their daughter, is also struggling with adolescence and that whole L'Engle-style conflict . . .

It combines the best of many of her novels: the adult conflict and the children's conflict. Not that this is exactly a book for children: it's as heavy as anything else she writes. But in this book I see beginnings of most of the novels that came after it, both for adolescents and for adults.

Highly recommended! That is, if you can find it . . .

Pretty good, for early L'Engle

This book is notable for several reasons: in typical L'Engle "nepotistic" style, it features the younger version of characters who appear in later books (Virginia Porcher, _House Like a Lotus_, and Mimi Oppenheimer, _A Severed Wasp_); and it features characters who obviously evolved into two important characters of her more recent Young Adult fiction, Zachary Gray and Max Horne. While a fascinating read, this book does not have the maturity of writing that Ms. L'Engle developed in her more recent adult fiction.

This study guide is excellent for individual or group study. Covers several different women of the Bible and has great discussion questions and leader's guide located at the back of the book. I think you or your group will really enjoy it. I learned sooo much from doing this study with the Sunday school class.
