Shaw Books

Was a very informative book on quilts, but was puzzeled by the caption on page 56 of the quilt titled Hank Williams. I don't believe the idea of the artist intended for it to be catagorized in pop art. Maybe a quote from the artist would be appropriate or a way to contact the artist about her view. Did the artists in the book have to sign a release for use of their quilts?

I'm a weekend quilter - and love working with rich color. This is not only a coffee-table beautiful book but it inspires creative ideas far beyond normal quilting. You don't have to be a quilter to enjoy - the art is wonderful. And if you do quilt, this will inspire you to all sorts of radically new ideas.

From the moment I set eyes on this book I knew I had to have it. The quilts are totally incredible. The skill of these quiltmakers & the detail they obtain is astonishing. They are true artists. It is a great value.

The abstract quilts combine color, pattern & shape so beautifully it takes your breath away. Surface techniques such as dyeing, painting, applique & embroidery make these quilts remarkable works of art.

Some of my favorite quilts include a nude pregnant woman & two quilts depicting Noah & his ark. I enjoyed a few scenes with vases & another made as a memorial to the artist's parents. I also fell in love with the many landscape quilts.

The text is fascinating, discussing the history behind quiltmaking & the techniques used to make these beautiful quilts. The captions are great, explaining the methods used to make the quilt as well as the artist inspiration.

Beautiful color plates. If you are an artist or quilter who prefers to emphasize color and design, then this book is invaluable for ideas and inspiration. Highly recommend for your library.

Shaw has packed many high-level topics into this play, while at the same time keeping long portions of the dialogue fairly low-level. Two topics jump out most frequently: hell and enjoyment. His take on each respective topic is fresh, seemingly from an entirely new perspective.

In the third act, the characters' conversation stands out in a couple ways. The explanation of hell from Don Juan, the Statue, and The Devil's point of view is unique. From a Judeo-Christian standpoint, it reeks of blasphemy, twisting around the traditional views to show things as they really are: The devil finally gets to tell his side of the story; heaven is boring; anyone can go between the two afterlives whenever they please. What is interesting is that Shaw's hell can fit with the Judeo-Christian/Biblical facts, something that the blasphemy police certainly will not give any credence to or spend any time investigating. His idea that heaven and hell are created for those who are going there matches perfectly with Biblical theology. A person not living in the grace of Jesus would hate heaven just as much as a person living in his grace would hate hell. Biblical theologians would not agree (if one could get them to listen) that people can choose their own eternity, nor would they agree with the concept of non-believers enjoying themselves in hell, even if one could get them to voice their belief that they will be given over to all the desires of their flesh.

What is fascinating about Shaw's hell is just that idea - that if life is about your passions and enjoyment (namely, the flesh) then your afterlife will be personal to those same passions and enjoyment. At this point, the conservative Judeo-Christians would be sharpening their inquisition equipment in a fervent rage because much of the play speaks to that idea of personal enjoyment during life, specifically the English. Don Juan says that humans live to try to understand life more but later adds to that idea by saying that understanding only helps us to know that we are enjoying ourselves. Life then becomes the pursuit of enjoyment, and hell mimics that pursuit as a sort of eternal amusement park. In a statement that seems like a pre-response to his opponent's case, Don Juan then says that although he spent his whole life looking for pleasure, he never found it. If it could ever happen, it is that response which could appease the frantic theologians. The devil, being the father of lies has pulled the eternal wool over everyone's eyes, both the living and the dead, and has gotten them to abandon their real purpose.

Shaw's flirtation with both sides of the controversy is what allows this play such success. He angers both the proponents and opponents of Christian "myths" and then offers possible solutions to appease both sides.

The writings of Bernard Shaw in this particulat play, invites to you use your mind to understand life and philosphy. It has such great insight into many aspects of human nature and at the same time is exteremely funny and really takes you into it's pages. The writing has impecable style and this is truly a classic play.

George Bernard Shaw was called, with good reason, the "English Nietzsche". Though Nietzsche was an aristocrat and Shaw a socialist, both cherished the dream of the superman and looked forward to the day when he would be realised. Both, however, were characterised by their mordant wit and intellectual cynicism, in which "Man and Superman" abounds. Shaw manages to compress a number of disparate themes into a relatively taut dramatic format, even throwing in a scene in which Don Juan, the Devil and a gang of anarchist brigands make an appearance. The central event of the plot involves the wealthy Tanner, a member of the "Idle Rich Class" making himself subservient to the Life Force and seeking the perfect woman to marry, who would guarantee him a very special offspring, his ideal, the superman himself. Though Shaw was not known to have read the works of Bergson at that time, nor to have been conversant with his vitalist doctrine of the Life Force, his use of the Life Force motif and the philosophical underpinnings of the play attest to a pure Bergsonism. The most delightful part, however, is the "Revolutionist's Handbook" at the end, which contains Shaw's most scandalous anti-Establishment jibes. For instance, "Do not do unto others as you would them do unto you. They might not have the same taste."

Pete Dye has long been one of my favorite course designers and this book gave me some great insight into the mind of a master. I recommend this book to anyone who has played one of his courses and cursed Dye's name, it will make you appreciate all the design elements that you may have missed.

You are going to love this book despite if you are a golf lover or not. It's the story of some of Pete Dye best golf courses described in a chapter base. Those who know Pete will enjoy the book since it is like talking to him in person because of the simplicity of the words chosen and the graphical description that he makes of how each course was conceived.

The story of the famous island green 17th at the Stadium Course at TPC is one of a kind. I particularly enjoy the story of "Teeth of the Dog", a course that could hardly be replicated in history since it was practically built by hand decades ago at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic. It is not only the best Golf Course in the Caribbean -according to Golf Digest and many other publications- but also the birthplace of golf in the DR at this enchanted destination. I consider this course as the "Prima Donna" of the Caribbean and one of the top 20 in any most play list. I hope that in a next edition he could also include one of his most recent courses "Dye Fore" also at this destination which I partially saw in the book Caribbean Architecture: Exclusive Designs by Gianfranco Fini in Marina Casa de Campo and has a breathtaking view all over the Chavon Cannon, the Casa de Campo Marina and, of course, the Caribbean Sea.

Pete's book will help you understand why there is such connection between the player and his courses, how he makes it happened and best of all the anecdotes behind the creation of each one of them. This book is a keeper and it rating is 5 out 5 starts with any doubts. The pictures are touching; the text is like talking to Pete himself and; is a most for any golf aficionado.

Having played several of Dye's famous layouts, you realize this guy knows the game and challenges all facets of your shotmaking abilities (or should I say streches them.) Enjoyed the organization by layout. Must seem like real chapters in his life. Great book from a great architect.

Books by golf architects tend to be on the dull side for most people. They don't tell you a story of their development as architects, or how their courses evolved during the design phase, but just seem to begin and end with "see, wasn't this brilliant?"

Pete Dye is something of a mystery to many. His designs are "unique", which can be bad or good for most people. Where did his ideas come from? What influences him the most? What stories are behind his greatest feats?

In this one book, we get pleanty of answers, all in a tale that feels like you are sitting down and listening to it as it is being told. Even golfers tend to think course architecture is a dull subject, but hopefully this will change a few minds. Architecture isn't some great mysterious practice. It is an art, and the artist is often times less seperated from us than we care to imagine.

Some think Pete Dye's golf courses are tricky or too hard. The courses Pete designs are built to be fair but punnishing for the right reasons. Played right, Pete's courses offer memorable rounds to the golfer. Now, it's not Pete who designs the course but a strong team of Pete, his wife Alice and his sons Perry and P.B. (architects in their own right) as well as the site managers and crews that are hired to do the building.

You'll learn that Pete designs courses on a sheet of paper and this is where his skills lie - understanding the land offered for the course and knowing how the wind and terrain will match in creating a great experience. Courses like PGA West, TPC Stadium (Sawgrass), The Pete Dye Club, Harbour Town and many others are discussed. One chapter per course.

Pete talks to you in this book. It's not an interview but it is presented as if Pete is telling you his life's story.

For a golfer looking for lessons, these are a different kind of lesson - from the eyes of a designer (and historically gifted golfer too). You will play better golf after you read this.

When you play a Pete Dye course, you'll remember Pete's words and how Alice was a main contributor to the design you're playing.

For the Christian writer, or for any writer with an ethical/moral basis informing their work, this (my copy is 2004) is an invaluable reference. It's user-friendly in the extreme, with a carefully drafted how-to-use section making the massive amount of information here more available and less daunting. Major sections include resources for writers, book publishers by topical category, periodicals by topical category, helps for writers, and an index/glossary section. Although the market analysis is quickly outdated, much of the information is useful over several years.

I simply believe all Christian writers should purchase a copy of this book each year if they are truly interested in publishing in the Christian market. To my knowledge, there is no better book for the purpose of learning about and knowing the current market than this one.

Stuart does a remarkable job of keeping up with this ever-growing and changing field!

A MUST BUY!!!!

This is the best market guide I have found. Even better than the Writer's Market Guide. It is filled with useful resources for writers such as literary agents, writing conferences, contests for writers, writer's groups, web resources, etc. It's definately worth the money. Updated yearly. The author is very knowledgeable. A must for any writer even if your focus of writing is not Christian writing.

"Christian Writers' Market Guide 2002: The Reference Tool for the Christian Writer" is still the best market guide for anyone writing for the Christian market. Any writer committed to being published needs this book.

Similar the better known guides published by Writers Digest, Sally Stuart has compiled, organized and analyzed the various publishers and publications serving Christian readers. By "Christian," she includes protestant and Catholics, mainline and nondenominational publishers.

The Writers Digest guides simply do not have the depth and breadth of Christian publishers. You need the WD guides, but you need this as well.

You'll find entries for smaller, but important publications, like "World Pulse," the missions newsletter, as well as "Decision," a widely circulated magazine published by the Billy Graham people. You'll see also, "Our Sunday Visitor," "Commonweal" and "My Friend" (for Catholic kids). Any publisher you see in your church library is here, plus hundreds you might be new to. You'll see addresses, e-mail and website information, description of the publication, how much they pay, and what kinds of articles, poems and books they like to see.

I can vouch for the efficacy of this book, as through this guide I sold several poems.

Buying a new edition each year is necessary, as the information changes from year to year. Publishers move, editors move to new jobs, and publications might go out of business. The serious writer needs to keep up-to-date. With Stuart's book, updated annually, you can.

The continual frustration about this otherwise extremely useful book is the lack of a CD version. I would love to be able to sort through it all, and isolate those publishers who pay for poetry. It is cross-referenced, so you can see who is publishing environmental, evangelistic, eschatology, humor, romance--you name it.

She also has topical guide listings here for publishers of books, subsidy books, general markets, literary agents, contest, children's, conferences, pastors, and much more.

I fully recommend "Christian Writers' Market Guide 2002: The Reference Tool for the Christian Writer" by Sally Stuart."

Now there is someone who has made available and information resource for Christian Writers. Sally E. Stuart has compiled the comprehensive 'Christian Writers' Market Guide 2003' with all types of Christian publishing information. There is a large Christian market than one may expect and Stuart has researched this one well. You can only imagine the number of these markets are in access. I've added this to my much used and needed Writer's Resource shelf along with the 'Writer's Market' and 'The Writer's Handbook.' No Christian Writer should be without this valuable up-to-date marketing resource book.

This can be used by the first-time writer or the publishing veteran. It's essential if you're wanting to get published in the Christian community. The contents in it's pages is al you'll need from any resource. This reference tool is completely updated and revised with 1,138 publishing markets, 379 book publishers, 678 periodicals, 81 specialty markets (greeting cards, video, CD and gifts) and so on. There's much more from agents and foreign markets to internet markets to contest. There's additional resources for book promotion, submission guidelines, writers' conferences, workshops and groups. All this makes this the most complete and accurate resource of any kind. I've contacted at least three resources with good success. If you want to get your work published in the Christian market this is the book!

NOTE: An important rule mentioned in the book, DO NOT Rely Soley on the Information Provided in this Market Guide. It not intended to be complete by itself. It's important for your success as a writer that you learn how to use writer's guidelines and study book catalogs or sample copies before submitting to any publisher.

Christian Writers' Market Guide 2005 is the 20th Anniversary Edition of this invaluable resource. Christian Writers' Market Guide is published on a yearly basis. Each year new markets are added and even more information is included.

If you write inspirational, self-help, spiritual, poetry, or Christian articles, ebooks, books, or music this publication needs to be on your bookshelf. The information in this book includes both online and print media for domestic and international markets with each entry detailing the contact information (snailmail, fax, and email), submission guidelines, genre specialities, payment rates, and tips. These entries are cross referenced by media, market, genre, and denomination.

In addition to this helpful information, this guide also includes entries for reviewers, publicists, and distributors as well as detailed lists of associations, books, and online resources for writers. There is even a section listing contests and awards for Christian writers.

This resource for Christian writers is very thorough, with the notable exception of website addresses for the listed publishers. Now that Ms. Stuart has established a computerized data base, I'm hopeful this will be included in future versions.

The "Christian Writers' Market Guide" is still the reference book every Christian writer needs. Consider this a gimmee. Buy this year's edition. Buy next year's edition. Plan on the following year as well.

What you need to know about this edition:

* 1,180 markets. Pick a Christian denomination (Catholic and Protestant), and their publication is likely listed.

* Almost 700 periodicals, over 350 book publishers. Think of how many you are aware of? "Christianity Today," "New Man," "Decision" are probably at the top of your mind for periodicals. Tyndale, NavPress, InterVarsity Press are probably among the book publishers you know. Maybe you know a few more. Here, you'll discover how vast the Christian publishing world is.

Literary agents, contests, advice for various markets, editorial services, market analyses, specialty markets (like greeting cards) all have sections.

If you are looking to connect with other writers, you'll be happy to find the lists of writers' groups and clubs, and for conferences and workshops. A key group is the Evangelical Press Association, but there are smaller ones geared for denominations and market.

The structure is similar to previous editions, but, as always, the current year provides the most accurate data.

Each publication starts with symbols indicating if it is new, if the data is confirmed, and if they pay. There's the title, the contact info including a URL, an editor's name, a brief description, the page count and circulation number, the subscription cost, percentage freelanced, submission preference, payment style, and general content needs.

Missing but I hope soon changing, is a purely digital version. Searching through a book to find, for example, what periodicals pay for poetry, can be frustrating when I know a sensible CD version would allow me a complete list within seconds.

Weak also are listings for foreign markets, but this may as much a fault of the publisher as the guide's editor, or may be due to the limited number of international Christian publications.

Add up the above, and you will see how any writer aiming for the Christian market at large would find this an indispensable volume. It fills in the gaps left open by the very useful "Writer's Digest" market guides, and provides the required tools for connecting writer and publisher.

I fully recommend the "Christian Writers' Market Guide," as it remains the best option for any Christian writer.

This book is a great and plentiful resource for any serious Christian writer. It leaves absolutely nothing undone. Kudos to the author. Incidentally, she actually does answer emails and is very willing to help with her many other publications as well as her expertise. She is very approachable. Thanks for all the hard work!

My aunt bought this book for me as a gift and I have used it almost daily in my profession. The book is organized well and has listings of publications and publishers that are not found in other guides. It is easy to read and includes a wealth of information including pay rate, tips, and special needs. At the back of the book, it also includes workshops and conference listings. A must have for any writer!

Jamie Shaw's "Dog to Dog Communication, the Right Way to Socialize Your Dog," presents a highly-readable, new and clear approach to dog training. She writes in a relaxed, conversational style, as if she is talking directly to the reader. There are excellent photographs and charming line drawings as well. This is a sensitive, thoughtful book for everyone who shares their home with a companion dog (or dogs).

I cannot tell you how thrilled I am that Jamie Shaw wrote DOG TO DOG COMMUNICATION. I used to be embarrassed by my dog's behavior--he was uncontrollable around other dogs--but after reading the extremely helpful information I can now bring my dog anywhere and he's a real class act. Shaw's techniques really WORK! They're highly effective, yet gentle. Please, your dog and the dogs of your friends and neighbors beg you to buy this book.

A book like this is long overdue. Dog to Dog Communication is an excellent book that instructs dog owners how best to understand your dear pet. Unlike other dog books, Ms. Shaw provides straightforward ways to communicate with your pet and to enjoy immediate, long lasting results.

at last someone who understands my frustration and can tell me what do to about it in a way that i can understand and use.

I'm getting a new puppy this summer. A friend gave me this book because he had success with his dog using Ms. Shaw's techniques. I'm looking forward to my new puppy and will definitely use the information in this book to make puppy and me happy.

The idea that the best ideas seem obvious after they have been pointed out juiced my desire to find more creativity. There's something very teasing and encouraging about the idea that the answer might somehow be there in plain view if I could just see it...sort of like one of those puzzles that kids play where you find the tiny pictures hidden throughout a larger picture. That the answers to complicated problems might somehow be very plain if I could but see them, makes me want to keep searching.

The additions to this edition (added later by the author) are the reason I give the book 5 stars. Simple and only a few pages, these check lists of exercises offer practical ways to open eyes and wisdom to see the answer.

I especially liked his thought that you know you're close to the right answer when you can easily explain it to anyone, they all get it, and they all react with wide-eyed, "why didn't i think of that, it seems so obvious."

I read this classic after reading it's recommendation by the teacher in "the art of profitablility" by Adrian Slywotzky (also a book worth the study).

I really liked this little book. It was a gift from a top copywriter and I really appreciated it. It is a quick, easy read but contains valuable information including notes made years later by the author helping to explain his thoughts. Although written long ago much of the information is timeless. Highly recommended for everyone involved in advertising and marketing or in business. Ah shucks, I'm going to make my kids read it.

Although originally published 51 years ago, this timeless treasure is the best sales and marketing book ever written. It is a must read for all of us who market and sell products, services, and/or ourselves (which includes just about everyone).

A great quick read with a valuable lesson!!

I am a fan of the Kennedys and I love this book! It is just pictures...pictures...pictures! It is so wonderful! I had to wait 6 long days for it to come to my house. But it was worth it! I love all of the photographs of Caroline as a 2 year old at the beach playing with her parents. I also like the ones of John at the beach with his mother.
This book is wonderful. And I love it. If you buy it, it is worth the money! I paid 12 dollars for it! Mark Shaw did a good job!!!

Mark Shaw's photographs capture the idyllic moments of John, Jackie, Caroline and John Jr., whether at play in the White House or laughing together on a Cape Cod beach. The simple yet stunning photos of this famous foursome will be as familiar to you as your own family photo album.

To those who were there when John Kennedy was in the White House, this book will serve as a touching remembrance and to people who know about the Kennedys from just a historical standpoint, the photos and words will provide a more personal glimpse into the years that are commonly referred to as the Camelot era. Richard Reeves words are not overly sentimental but an accurate assessment of the life and times of this legendary family.

Overall, The John F. Kennedys: A Family Album, is a pleasant, yet sometimes sad journey looking back at what was considered the perfect family of two successful, stunning parents and their adorable children. Behind the photos, all was not perfect but Mark Shaw's camera didn't lie -- in the end, they were like any other family with problems but in-between they knew how to have fun and simply enjoy each others company, as is evident in many of Shaw's photos, especially those showing them at play at their home on Cape Cod.

Followers of the Kennedy's will no doubt enjoy this book, as will those who are interested in what life was like for a very public family who shared their private times with a talented photographer and with the world. If you like taking a look back in time, you will no doubt enjoy the journey Mark Shaw and Richard Reeves takes you on.

This book about the Kennedy family is one of the best! I am a fan of them, and I love those pictures! My favorites are the ones of Caroline and her brother in Caroline's bedroom in the White House, and the ones of John-John and Caroline with their Father and Maud Shaw, the nanny, which I'm guessing is in early 1961. This book has no words, except for the intro and the back describing the pictures from the chapter. This is a definite need for anyone who is a Kennedy fan!!!

Mark Shaw's book is a real treat. His loving, poignant photographs show the real love, the real bonds, the real ties within the most famous family. The pictures of little Caroline and John are among my favorites. Caroline and John from all accounts have remained so natural, so wonderfully, refreshingly normal. I loved seeing these two children at play. Pennsylvania Avenue could have been Main Street. To their parents' credit, they grew up unaffected. This book shows it.

Copy was in lightish print , though clear and clean. back cover somewhat soiled with print "smudge" but generally a good softcover copy of the score. Excellent value.

This revised choral score of Handel's famous MESSIAH is destined to become the performance standard. This new edition carefully revises and collates the different manuscripts of the famous score, and gives the performer a
version closest to what Handel intended. Watkins Shaw's scrupulous editing and copious and helpful notes, and the easy-to-read printing make this a must for the serious musician.

This very fine edition is perfectly suitable for the listener wishing to follow along to a recording or a performance (why people do this at a live performance, I do not know). But it is also a very affordable vocal score for performance.

It has several advantages. First, the printing is clear and easy to read. Second, the keyboard accompaniment isn't simply for a rehearsal pianist. It provides an organist a quite usable arrangement and the rehearsal pianist guidance as to what to play and what can be left out. Third, it doesn't have German that one has to ignore as one finds in other editions.

I have had my copy for many years and used it more than most folks ever will use theirs. Yes, I did find it useful to put some clear plastic covering on and had to re-glue the spine once. But that is trivial for the use it has provided me.

Strongly recommended.

I received the music in a timely manner and the music was in perfect condition!!!

As a choir student who just learned Messiah for the first time, I found this edition a wonderful work. It is not only a pleasure for Messiah purists (see review below) but also for those newly introduced to Handel's work. I loved using the Watkins Shaw Edition so much!

Jay Pollard for some reason is one of only a handful of spies that most Americans heard of. Aldrich Ames and Robert Hanssen being the others. Pollard was given a life with parole sentence. But at that time, no American who ever spied for an ally was given more than 8 years. People who had spied for the Soviets have been paroled from prison. There seems to be a double standard. Apparently, the US was upset that close friend like Israel was using a mole in Naval Intelligence. It seems they punished Jay Pollard to punish Israel. The ironic part is that there are Israelis serving time for spying for the CIA. Pollard was wrong in what he did. It's true that US Intelligence was withholding intelligence information that it had promised to give Israel. Pollard felt this wromg and gave the informtion to Israel himself. He should have gone to the Naval Inspector instead. Pollard it was shown had a lousy lawyer. Pollard agreed to a plea bargain as recommended by his lawyer. The problem was the plea did not set a determinate sentence. It was open ended. He could have gotten as little as a year or as much as life. This was the lawyers fault. What kind of lawyer plea bargains for an open ended sentence? The worst is that his appeal in which his new lawyer said that Pollard had his rights violated was rejected because it was filed late. Well, I really don't have much to say about the book. However, this Jonathan Pollard has caused me a great deal of embarassment over the years. I will be grateful when he is forgotten. When the news media distributed stories of his capture, an erstwhile friend of mine who was living in London at the time called my mother and expressed shock at my arrest. My mom was a bit shocked by the news, too, considering that we had just had lunch the previous day and I hadn't mentioned any big news - such as imminent arrest!
