Great book showing diversity in a circle of sharing

This book truly creates a cause-and-effect circle for children to follow. They learn that by sharing and being kind to others, it encourages others to do the same. Children are shown sharing not only tangible items like crayons and cookies, they also share hugs and kind words.
The illustrations are bright and colorful, a delight for children and adults. Several ethnicities are featured giving a wonderful circle of diversity. The book ends with a beautiful pop-up illustration. My kids LOVE this book!
The book is marketed as a "board book". In truth, it is somewhere in between a hardback and a board book. The pages are strong and sturdy, but not the thick cardboard you might expect.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Great Book Long Awaited

This book is a great and long awaited addition to the Scott Shaw library of literature. For people like me who have been trying to find Scott Shaw's obscure poetry books for a long time, this publication answers that need. Though it doesn't state it in the description, what this book does is to presents several of Shaw's early poetry books in one volume. The previously published books included in this edition are, "Scream: Southeast Asia and the Dream," "Suicide Slowly," "Last Will and Testament According to the Divine Rites of the Drug Cocaine," "No Kisses for the Sinner" and "On the Hard Edge of Hollywood."
For those of you who think that poetry is only rhyming words, with Scott Shaw's poetry this is not the case. I don't think there is a single rhyme in the whole book. He writes more in the prose style of the poets from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, like Kerouac, Snyder, Ferlinghetti, Ginsberg and Bukowski, whom he was apparently friends with in his youth.
My favorite chapter or book in this volume is, "On the Hard Edge of Hollywood." This is because Shaw really depicts the Hollywood nightlife lifestyle with very artistic illustrations of some of the more seedy locations and activities that rise from them.
In this book what you get is some very personal, deeply artist depictions of the world and the life which Shaw has lived both in Hollywood and Asia. I personally would subtitle this book, "The Unknown Scott Shaw" because some of the experiences he writes about are downright surprising and they really provide the reader with an unexpected microscope into the life of Shaw.
Overall, I believe this is a very interesting book because it really provided deep insight into the life and the mind of Shaw, who is mostly known for writing about Zen Buddhism. In other words, if you have only read his spiritual books, "Don't be surprised," because this book is very different from his Zen Buddhist writings, almost like he is two different people, but I guess that's what yin and yang is all about.

Great book about late 1800's music in London

To paraphrase W. H. Auden, this is exactly the sort of thing you'll like if you like this sort of thing - an overview of the musical life of London and provinces in the late 1800's. It's big. It talks about a lot of people and places you've probably never heard of, and could lead a full and complete life without hearing of. It's informative. It's tremendously funny in places.
Shaw was a master of English prose, and he was writing about a subject he knew and loved. If you are interested in music and good writing, this is a must-read, if you have the endurance.

This collection of lose knit tales of the history of Middle Earth and those that live there. We learn many things as what different names of beings and places mean. This helps add a dimension to the stories that take place there.
I would say that it would help to read Lord of the Rings first because it is more comfortable when getting to know the area and characters. Then we can see where they came form; relationships are better understood.
Much of The Silmarillion can be taken in small bits and then sit back and contemplate how it could have been.
One does not just cut through any cultural history book for light reading and just shelving it. This is a cultural history book and will require rereading.
When people talk about the war I think back to which one they are talking about. Or are they just referring to one of the many orc skirmishes.
You do not have to be a Tolkien fan to find interest in this collection.

This little book is a treasure. Dividing her reflections into Acts of Creativity, Daring,Generosity,Healing,Integrity, and Joy, Vinita Hampton Wright identifies daily situations and illumines ways to live with and through each one. The sub-title "A Little Book about Getting Unstuck" clues the reader to Wright's emphasis on moving through times of difficulty, fear, criticism. Lest you think this is a sad book, be assured that Wright suggests new ways of celebrating, forgiving, acting out joy.
Such a perfect book for so many occasions that you will want to get one for yourself, but several for gifts for friends.

Many of her poems focus on objects in nature, and the deeper truths they remind us of. She sees wonder in the ordinary, and makes marvelous use of metaphor to awaken us to the wonder. "Though the pomegranate is finished, still my tongue tingles. My skull is filled with rubies." (from "The Tenacity of Memory" in The Silent Trees)
Now almost 80, she has published numerous books of poetry during her career, including Listen to the Green, The Secret Trees, and Writing the River. She has also served on the committee of consultants for a recently published new version of the English Bible, and is writer-in-residence at Regent College in Vancouver, British Columbia.
