Russell Shaw is a long-time Catholic journalist of impeccable honesty and courage. His new book, *Nothing to Hide* reveals the hidden causes of the recent scandals in the Church, and prescribes the changes that need to be made so that the Church can heal. The remedies he prescribes may be painful to some, especially in the hierarchy, but they will be welcome to most Catholics outside the charmed, and sometimes not so charming, closed circle of insiders.

Shaw is that rare Catholic analyst of Church affairs - a loyalist without being an apologizer. As a bonus, he writes well and the text moves quickly and forcefully.

GBS Satirical Comments on The Church

Ther was only one George Bernard Shaw. What we would have done with two, I cannot imagine. Le me quote from the first paragraph:
As a modern man, concerned with matters of fine art and living in London by the sweat of my brain, I dwell in a world which, unable to live by bread alone, lives spiritually on alcohol and morphia. If GBS could
come back today for a visit, he would assuredly feel right at home.
And most likely very sad at the fact nothing has changed in this
respect since the year he wrote this in 1896. 112 years ago. This is
a slim volume consisting of only sixty pages but in those sixty pages, there are many jewels.

My kids loved this book - they and all the adults who have read it have spent hours discovering all the details in the pictures. The artwork is spectacular and the poetry is funny. The ending made the kids really think about saving their world and generated a lot of questions on their part. My kids are very small so I had to read it to them, but they enjoy it very much.

Anyone who sets foot in a darkroom should read this book. A little scary at times, but information you need to be aware of. Especially important for creative workers who often forget about the side effects of the materials they work with.

The Shame of Tomahawk Beckwourth
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2004-11-06
This autobiography of an ex-slave who survived the savagery of the Wild West is adapted by Michael Cox. On page 74, Beckwourth tells us:

"Because of my expert knowledge of the Cheyenne, I was approached to act as their [the Army] guide. I didn't want to, as I knew the local Cheyenne were a peaceful bunch but Chivington was out for blood. Fearing he'd hang me if I refused, I did as he asked and led him and his men to Sand Creek, the place where I knew the Indians were."

Actually the Cheyenne were not Indians from India, but Americans who were native to America. This misnomer is attributed to Columbus, one of the earliest Europeans to America, who thought he had arrived in India and wanted their gold.

Beckwourth continues - "When we finally reached the ridge overlooking the camp, we saw the tepees of Chief Black Kettle and his people spread along the riverbank below us. I knew that all these Indians were innocent and completely unprepared for an attack, believing they were protected by a peace treaty."

If only our inalienable rights could be protected that easily, by a written decree, then our Bill of Rights would have worked then and today. Beckworth says - "Colonel Chivington then gave orders to begin the killing and his men charged down on the unsuspecting Cheyenne, shooting as they went. From my spot on the ridge, I saw an old friend, Spotted Antelope, come running out of his tepee, shouting 'Stop! Stop!' but they shot him along with six or seven children who were playing at the river's edge and a bunch of women standing by the cooking pots."

Sickened by his eye-witnessing of this savage act, Beckworth lamented on page 75 - "During the next three hours, hundreds of innocent Indians aged from one week to eighty years were killed by the whites, who only lost nine men. And then the victorious soldiers paraded through the streets of Denver, while crowds cheered them to the skies. To think I was part of that terrible day fills me with shame that will stay with me forever."

I know how Beckwourth feels. When I was in the military, I helped the Afghan Freedom Fighters against the Commie Russians. Today the Afghans have been betrayed by the Benedict Arnolds in Washington, District of Criminals, who have partnered with 30 Russian billionaires against the Afghans, in the name of an oil pipeline and CIA heroin. The dastardly Soviet drug lord Hamid Karzai was installed as dictator and today is president after sham elections.

The same thing is going on in Iraq. 40 years ago CIA installed Saddam Hussein who tortured and killed the Iraqis while selling their oil to us at a low price. Now the U.S. wants to install the next Iraqi government, while the Iraqis rightly don't trust Uncle Sam to do so after their experience with the last U.S.-installed monster.

When you think about all the tens of thousands of innocent people killed by our government's militaries and covert forces or look at the photos of the dead at the Veterans For Peace website, you feel Beckwourth's pain. You feel shame. May God forgive us and bring world peace.
