Help for Homeschooling ParentsReview Date: 2001-01-28
I talked with friends and read about 6 books in the library on this subject, but the most informative, practical and encouraging with regard to homeschooling is one called "The Influential Parent: How to be the Person Your Teen Really Needs," by David Damico. I plan on buying it. It is not a homeschooling book but could be. All parents will benefit from reading this book. It is not so school-focused as other parenting books are but instead deals with working with the teen's own interests. It helps parents work with drawing out the teen's interests to avoid that "I'm bored" syndrome. Includes chapters on getting your teen really involved, developing a "limited partnership"(where the parent retains the main role in guiding but allows a partnership to develop with the teen involved in decision making) , looking at your own energy needs and setting limits (to avoid burnout, a big issue with homeschooling parents) , becoming someone your teenager will follow and have fun with, why parents meet with resistance, why adolescence is draining on parents, eight ways to influence your child, coaching instead of policing, using respect to develop as a role model for a budding adult. This is a respectful book and full of advice and insight I haven't heard other places.

An excellent compilation of the JatakasReview Date: 2008-02-24
My only comment about this book is that the accompanying commentaries should follow after each the Jataka, and not before. Having the commentary behind would prevent any spoilers and it is also much more productive reading the commentary only after you've read the Jataka itself.
Having said that, this is a great book! I'm reading this a second time and will be recommending it to my friends.

This book not only captures most vividly the exotic taste of India as it was in the 19th century, but also has the timeless flavour of true romance... the poems deal with love, loss, disillusionment, death and eternity, everything and nothing, and do so beautifully.
To whet your appetite, here comes a quote, from 'The Teak Forest':
"Whether I love you, you do not ask,
Nor waste yourself on the thankless task,
I give your kisses at least return,
What matter whether they freeze or burn;
I feel the strength of your fervent arms,
What matter whether it heals or harms.
You are wise, you take what the Gods have sent,
You ask no question, but rest content,
And so I am with you to take your kiss
And perhaps I value you more for this.
For this is wisdom, to love, to live,
To take what God or the Fates may give,
Speed passion's ebb as you greet its flow,
To have- to hold- and in time -let go!"
A beautiful piece of poetry, and a valuable piece of advice, all in one. It is really surprising that a young woman, in the restrictive society of the British in India (for more on this, you can always read E.M. Forster's wonderful 'Passage to India'), could have had so free a spirit to write these poems and publish them, even under a pen name.
To cut a long review short, this is a wonderful book if your are looking for either romance, the taste of the exotic or both... a must-read!
