This is an excellent book about Irish hand crafts. Highly recommended. The book was originally published in 1978±. This is an updated reprint with some new crafts and craftspeople. Most of the sections detail crafts and craftsmen and women unfortunately no longer with us. Their stories and skills are still worth studying. I have a personal link to two of the craftsmen written about, namely Jimmy (RIP) and Dan Kerrigan who are photographed and written about in the section about blacksmith/farriers. I worked at the forge in Slata Co. Roscommon one full Summer in secondary school when I was about 14. It was my first paying job. Anyhow it did not take the Kerrigans long to determine that I was no blacksmith. So I spent the last several weeks chopping up old vans, about 40 years accumulation worth and disassembling engine blocks etc. for scrap with a set of spanners, an axe and an angle-grinder. This is not nearly as much fun as it sounds. Wailing away at the bonnet and chassis of an old Commer van with a blunt axe gets tiring. Cycling home of an evening down the hills between Slata and Rooskey was a great end to the day after the long cycle up them in the morning. More innocent times surely.

Robert Bruce Shaw addresses an issue that is often either neglected or handled with bromides. To its credit, Shaw's book does not overpromise by announcing a magical ten day program to restore trust. Instead, it provides an interesting variety of examples and succinctly shows how the organizations that have succeeded in establishing high levels of trust differ from their less adept colleagues. While doing so, Shaw does not engage in preachy denunciations. The overall tone of the book emphasizes creating solutions rather than affixing blame.

In that spirit, "Trust in the Balance" contains surveys of the key factors affecting trust in the workplace; surveys that can be easily used by the reader to spot problems in his or her organization. Each chapter has meaty analysis and specific guidance on the steps that should be taken to address particular trust problems. There is also a helpful "Trust-Building Resources" section in the back of the book.

One is fortunate to glean one good idea from many business books. Shaw's book contains many excellent points and observations. Anyone seeking a no-nonsense analysis of how to handle the "trust issue" should read this book. It will be well worth your time.

The business case for trust

We talk a lot about "trust" in my organization, but it's always in vague terms. You get the feeling that everyone has their own definition, which they assume everyone shares. This book breaks trust down into easily understood components, makes a bottom-line business case for improving your relationships in the workplace, and then helps you do just that. It focuses on behaviors, not motivations, and therefore gives you a framework for talking about trust without accusing or blaming. It's one of the most useful business books I've read in a long time.

Against the backdrop of the approaching Christmas holiday, her role in the church play, and her family's wonderful holiday traditions, young Vicky Austin experiences feelings of rivalry for a sibling not yet born, and whose impending birth threatens to disrupt the holiday. This is a warm, loving book. It is an excellent story for older children, and I would recommend making the reading of it, chapter by chapter, part of a family's preparation for Christmas, like a literary advent calendar

My all time favorite Christmas book

If you love Madeleine L'Engle's books, then this is a definite "must have" for the holidays. Read about the Austin family as they prepare for Christmas, the church pageant, and a new addition to the family. Their warmth and love for each other are contagious, and yet they are a "real" family, growing pains and all. This is a fabulous book for young girls - and one to read every year in preparation for the holiday season.

Having this guidebook is like having a best friend at UW to tell you first-hand all the goods and bads of being a Husky. I recommend this book to prospective students as well as current UW students, the list of bars and restaurants is great when you're looking for something to do on a Friday night. If you really want to know how youll do as a Husky, this book is your bible.

Insightful guide book you should get!

Besides that, it's well written from a student's perspective and dare I say it, fun to read. I like the student quotes sections and the bar/restaurant guide. But, no worries, it's got great info on everything academic and etc. Buy the book!

I have been teaching ESL to Spanish speakers and Hebrew speakers for the past 3 years. My students love this book. The vocabulary points are clear and detailed. The exercises are directly relevant to all of the explanation. It is great for teachers in the classroom and for students who want to study on their own.

This book makes it clear that having a 'nice voice' is as much a guarantee of geting voice-over work as 'having two hands' is a guarantee of being a famous concert pianist.

The book is very detailed and thorough with many examples of scripts for the reader to try out. There is also a free CD with the book which has examples of good and bad voice-overs together with many backing tracks and jingles to accompany the scripts in the book.

An excellent book which is rapidly becoming the definitive text on this exciting career.

Since Amazon hasn't posted an editorial review, here's the description from the cover to help you decide if this book is for you: "Four decades of American life are re-created through the dramatic reminiscences of Benjamin Federov, a typical yet very special man, son of Immigrant Jewish parents, a husband, a father, an admirer of women, a one-time soldier ... and finally, and always, his own man. Federov's story is relived while watching his teen-age son play baseball in the sunshine of a summer day. It tells of the intrigue and exultation of his first love affair, his war experiences, the volatile warmth of his marriage, and the special meaning of his infidelities. Through it all is his quest for a point of balance as he stands on the edge of conventional society, desirous of entering, refusing always to do so."

Lyrical Memories of an Ordinary Man
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2001-05-29
Author Irwin Shaw doesn't strike a single false note as he takes the reader through the memories and daydreams of an ordinary man. The story's hero remembers with gentleness and humor the incidences of his boyhood and early life, including his war experiences and long marriage, that guided and shaped him into manhood. He struggles to understand how it can be that others -- some more deserving, others less -- managed to become 'members' of that elusive club: those who find meaning in their lives and a sense of connectedness to their families. Brilliantly written with insight, nostalgia and a self-deprecating humor, VOICES OF A SUMMER DAY illuminates not just the events, hopes and reactions of a single man, but of an entire generation.

It has been awhile since i've read a gospel based novel, and I've must admit that this is WORTH THE WAIT! The characters are real, and can be related to if you are a churchgoing person..Cindy goes in full detail on each characters that they will appear clearly in your imagination. My favorite part was the dialogue between Pastor Mabu and Reverend Bernard...BEAUTIFUL!! Be patient as you read... Cindy takes her time in helping us to understand each and every person in her story...once you understand them... She takes you on a lovely and real ride...ENJOY!

A Must Read!!!!!

This is a book that all Christians should read, whether you are seasoned or new in your walk. It will definitely make you reflect on your daily walk in Christ. You can really identify with the characters. Every Christian knows someone that is in one of the situations in the book or they themselves may be in one and this is the answer for them. Like Reverend Bernard, there are pastors out there that are doing more preaching than teaching which can lead to members of the congregations being lost because they have not been taught the Word properly or have elevated themselves higher than Christ (in their minds only). Or, like Marcia, who grew up in the church and was lost and still seeking Christ. This book shows you how we all, on occasion, hear the Holy Spirit speaking to us but choose to ignore it. If you find that it's a little slow in the beginning, keep the Faith that this book will have you missing dinner to find out what happens to each and every character. Even if you are not in the "walk", you will enjoy this book because it will keep you wanting to come back to find out what happens to each and every character. Read the book to find out about the other characters and how their destiny is fulfilled by having faith in Christ and waiting for "thine will be done". Remember, be hot or cold, as there is no Warm Room. ...

It was very easy to read and I was able digest the material covered without falling asleep. The photos are excellent and the captions are detailed.
