My 5-year old son and I are big fans of Joan Walsh Anglund. We have most of her books, and this one may be our favorite. It is so sweet. And of course, those drawings are so lovely. She depicts different children of all colors and race. It always leads to a good discussion about God.

I introduced this book to my daughter at age 2. It became one of her most favorite items. She carried it everywhere and I read it to her often. I think that it presents prayer in a positive, easily understood form for small children. In reading the book together, I also began to see an aspect of my prayer life that needed expansion.

As a mail carrier, I read this when supervisors asked us for 3-5 suggestions on what we would do if we were the CEO of the Post Office, so I could give informed suggestions. It explains a *LOT*. Your mail carrier would love you if you gave this to him/her--and will love you even more if YOU read it! You are--all Americans--the owners of the USPS, at least for now. I loved the history part and the solutions offered, and I wish all you owners would read this before it's too late --and not just too late for the Post Office, because this is one detailed example of a huge problem that many believe will change this country from being the Land of Opportunity to another Third World country if not reversed.

I heard this book was about a lot more than the post office, and it is. It's about privatizers using the narrow marketplace value of "profit is king" to erode and undermine services citizens depend on. The post office is just one place the privatizers are at work, as this book exposes. This book is well written and well documented. I found this book an absorbing read. Though the topic may sound like a "dry" one, this book has plenty of juice in terms of interesting stories and facts to get across the big picture of the plundering of a public good. A lot of books that expose a serious political problem offer few if any solutions. This book, however, proposes a solution, a highly workable one, via a specific citizen action. Buy a copy for your mail carrier too.

The photos are delicious entries in an intimate story of people, hopes, actions, and outcomes. My style is to jump around in some types of books--so I did. I love how conversational the style is and how human the stsories.

I am not an avid reader, but I read the book in two days! It gave me a little more insight into daily life with my own mother. She does not have Alzheimer's but she has become more forgetful which I find frustrating-and sad. But the idea of meeting her where she is, not where I want her to be, has helped me already-although some days are better than others in handling the events! I thank Shirley Shaw for opening the Rakhma Homes. God bless her and all her helpers. P.S. My mother also read the book. She used to love to read and is again doing so. She's 87.

A Reporter Who Became a Missioner

Emily Gardiner Neal is not a household name today. The healing ministry of which she was a part has been eclipsed by various movements not as traditional in the Episcopal Church. Though of the same denomination as the better-known Agnes Sanford, she was much more traditional in her approach to healing, emphasizing the role of the church and its healing ministry. In favor of the church's current romance with abortion and gays, her work and others like it have faded. Still, for those who are interested in God's healing, there is a great deal upon which to ponder.

Emily Gardiner neal was a skeptic in the early 1950'sand a professional journalist. Strongly affected by witnessing a healing service, she felt compelled to investigate the phenomenon. She began to talk with those who were healed, their pastors, their families, and their physician. In the process, she began honestly to face her own apprehension, subsequently writing A Reporter Finds God Through Spiritual Healing. Her journey of faith and her particiaption in the healing ministry of the church for the next thirty years are recorded in her additional six books - all out of print. An anthology of those books has been skillfully written by Anne Cassel to share the essence of her timeless stories and her extensive research. The book, formerly titled Celebration of Healing, is scripturally sound. The Episcopal Healing Ministry Foundation had sponsored the reprint of this work entitled, The Reluctant Healer.

Warm, funny novel about the "Catholic crisis"
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 1998-06-10
What a wonderful, funny and original novel! The conservative Catholics of a small midwestern diocese are dismayed when the successor to their just-retired and very conservative bishop turns out to be - well, as far to the left as the old one was to the right! Many Catholics who've survived the turmoil of the 60's and 70's will identify with the townspeople's dismay as the "liberals" take over. And yet -- while the author obviously shares their conservative ideology, he makes us understand and sympathize with the motivation, if not the action, of those on the left. By the end of this novel, you will find yourself thinking that maybe - just maybe - God really knows what He's doing, after all! (And best of all, it's not "preachy" like some religious novels tend to be - just a really good story!)

A GREAT Read for Every Pastor's Wife

It isn't often I come across a book that meets me where I am at in life. This one is very straight forward as well as helpful. When I have questions about ministry life I can turn to it for help and information. I have loaned my copy of this book to several pastors wives who found it just as helpful. Every pastors wife should read this one! Especially those just starting out in ministry.

As a pastor's wife, it is often very difficult to find someone who you can talk to about the things that concern you, especially when it relates to how you deal with your spouse. This book uniquely encourages the ministry spouse to continue in her own ministry while be a support to the calling that God has placed on her husband. Jill's unique insight in the mind and heart of the ministry spouse makes her feel as if she is as close to you as the next breath.

We have not yet completed this Bible study, but I'm a big fan of the Fisherman Bible Studyguides series. You read scripture, then talk about how it's applicable to our lives today. And I really like this approach to studying Revelation: Basically, that we can't know exactly what all the signs and symbols mean, we can't determine the timing, etc., because only God knows how the end times will really play out. But we can be blessed by a deeper knowledge of God's word and growing in our relationship with Him through studying the book of Revelation.

Helps Clear Up a Difficult Book

"Revelation: The Lamb Who Is the Lion" by Gladys Hunt impressed me enough to explore other Fisherman Bible Study Guides. My small group Bible study used it week by week, fully engaged and involved in discovering what Revelations is about.

That Revelation is among the Bible's more controversial books, and the most vastly interpreted is no secret. Therefore, finding a way to study it with being encumbered without a strong theological bias is a challenge.

I am not usually a big fan of Bible study workbooks because either they speak over the reader, or down to the reader. A common frustration for me is when it has us read John 3:16, then asks, "Who gave his only son?" Not Gladys Hunt. She asks real question, letting the Bible speak for itself.

A typical question for study and discussion is for Revelation 14 "How are the 144,000 described in verse 1 sharply distinguished from the people mention in 13:16-17?"

Each chapter divides Revelation by chapter, occasionally combining chapters, covering all of Revelation's 22 chapters in 12 lessons, with a thirteenth lesson helping understand the book as a complete unit.

Leaders notes are at the end, presenting the complexities and controversies, as well as insight regarding the culture, the perspectives, and various ideas impacting the mind of John, plus significant thoughts by leading thinkers.

A topical bibliography finishes it off, with roughly 90-100 books listed for further reading.

I fully recommend "Revelation: The Lamb Who Is the Lion" by Gladys Hunt.

the Best book Written on the 50's Music
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2008-01-28
At the risk of sounding like a broken record (repeating a phrase that has been said so many times), this book by the late Arnold Shaw is a gold mine. Besides covering, in detail, the people and the music of that era, Shaw absolutely tells it like it was: The music that has become known as "Rock 'N Roll" was borne out of the musical creativity of African Americans, then called "Rhythm & Blues." I read this book during the late 70's and found it refreshing -- to say the least -- to read a respected white American musicologist simply giving credit where it's due. Unfortunately, for that reason, very few white Americans will read -- or perhaps even believe -- this book, for the now white-dominated field of "Rock 'N Roll," with it's blind insistance that Elvis is "the King," gives too many white Americans what they need: their own music, and a king. So this book belongs to the future, when a more honest, less self-diluted, generation of Americans search for the truth. Till then I reccomend this book be purchased and put on your shelf. Your decedents will love you for doing so.

Shaw's insider status in the music industry, and his openness to all kinds of music from all eras, puts the fifties in perspective to the decades before it, and sets the stage for what's come since.

An Engaging Examination of a 19th Century Reformer
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2004-07-10
In Seeking the One Great Remedy, Lorien Foote offers a compelling picture of nineteenth century reformer, Frank Shaw, and reveals the antebellum roots of late nineteenth century reform movements. Challenging the epistemological contours of traditional scholarship, Foote argues that the complex partnership between Shaw and his associate, Henry George, demonstrates the link between mid-nineteenth century reformist tendencies and the radical movements of the 1880s and 1890s. Foote's careful scholarship, masterful prose, and evocative style, make Seeking the One Great Remedy a necessary read for anyone attempting to understand post-Civil War reformist history.

History Made Interesting

Review Date: 2003-12-27
This is the most immediately accessible work on history I have ever read. Though comprehensive and innovative enough for connisseurs, it is equally enlighteneing and enjoyable to the layperson. In talking about reform, Foote also touches on many fascinating aspects of 19th century life - such as contemporary issues facing women, interracial relations, and the intricate relationship between the north and south. Foote's writing is excellent and her explanations and analyses of her topics clear. She will also personally engage and move you in her chapter on the civil war. A must read for any history or biography lover.
