I bought my 3 nieces a book and they love it when I read it to them -- very colorful and easy to follow along. It's a fun way to teach history about a very historic city.

Alexander, The Old Town Mouse is one of my sons' and my favorite books! My 3 & 6 year old boys (and I) adore the detailed illustrations and the fun-filled story of Alexander's "mousequerade ball". Alexander's creativity is second only to that of the author & illustrator of this book.

This is just on of the Barnes' FABULOUS children's books!

I REALLY ENJOYED READING ALL'S FAIR IN LOVE. THIS BOOK REALLY HELD MY ATTENTION, THAT I READ IT IN ONE DAY. I'M LOOKING FORWARD TO READING THE NEXT BOOK BY MRS. SHAW. THIS WRITER MADE ME FEEL WHAT EACH CHARACTERS WAS GOING THROUGH. ALTHOUGH THE "BOOK" IS LABEL FICTION, THE "STORY" IS EVERYDAY LIVING.

American Silk - New Family History

I went right to the middle section of this book to read about The Haskell Silk Mills in Westbrook, Maine. Why? Because my Great Grandfather Edwin Haskell was the founder. Excellent research by the author and her obvious love of the subject matter gave us, the Haskell descendants, an incredible look at the success and subsequent failure of this local business. I learned much more about my forebears and the operation of the mills than I had picked up anecdotally all these many years. If you have an interest in the textile industry in New England or in fact, anywhere. This is a wonderful read about the days before the synthetics came to town.

Co-authored by a former costume curator, a professor of math and science history, and a costume curator, three top authors create a high-quality scholarly analysis of an industry in AMERICAN SILK 1830-1930: ENTREPRENEURS AND ARTIFACTS. At one time America's silk industry was the largest in the world, so even though it hasn't nearly the stature today, it's an essential piece of American and business history. Here three case studies of silk company production mills span the heyday of the silk industry era and cover the technological and social issues surrounding silk. A key college-level title for any holding serious about American and American business history.

This wonderful book is Madeline L'Engle's meditations on the Gospel of John and Genesis and how her sprituality relates to her life, bound up in a tale of her sea voyage on a freighter. It reads like much of her fiction, engaging rather than didactic. She does take some unusual approaches to the stories in Genesis, some of which I found a little disturbing, but basically I loved this book, and have reread it many times.

'And It Was Good'...is an understatement!

This book wasn't just good, it was brilliant. So far, this is my favorite Madeline L'Engle book because she combines her own personal reflections with her fascinating fiction in a book that was hard to put down. I had to check the date twice to see that it was published in 1984....I was like, "Are you kidding, me?" It reads like it's more contemporary and timely than ever and that is always a good sign with any book (stand the test of time).

I heard about this book through a friend of a friend whom I didn't know and went out on a limb and bought it....and now, I think I may have found another author (apart from Brennan Manning) who is so challenging, insightful and exhilerating, you can't help but sit back, breathe deep and simply thank God for her words.

Of benefit to the experienced swimmer
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2007-11-07
Whether you swim for exercise, relaxation or pleasure, this book is sure to help. While a good proportion of the text is devoted to explaining and justifying the principles behind the ideas it promotes (and I did tend to skip much of that, although I am sure it is interesting in itself), it does contain some really good advice.

I swim for an hour or more on an almost daily basis. Being a swimmer who at one time swam competitively I was finding it hard to do anything other than swim all out in the pool, but the suggestions here really helped me gain a new perspective, and derive much greater pleasure from my swimming.

Some sections are devoted to specific advice on individual strokes, highlighting both good and bad practices. Interestingly many of the suggestions contained in the book do not contradict typically taught methods, but rather they compliment or enhance them. However it does also warm against some practices which it considers physically harmful, especially some practices adopted by competitive swimmers. Overall its message is to encourage swimming techniques that are both relaxing and that make swimming a pleasure.

I found this a most useful book, every bit as beneficial for the experienced swimmer as much as the novice.

If you swim, you should get this book.

I've been a regualr swimmer for about 30 years - 4 to 5 times a week, an hour or so each time. About 2 years ago, a friend gave me a book about the Alexander Technique to read, saying it might be of interest to me and my swimming. I was quite interested and managed to attend a workshop where I got some hands-on experience with the work. One evening, a group of us went to the pool with one of the teachers and she showed us how to apply some of the ideas to swimming.

I couldn't believe how much of difference that little bit of information made! I realized that I had been using too much, and the wrong kind of effort, particularly with my back stroke. I'd always loved to swim, and the feel of the water, but now swimming became a whole new experience for me. Much more fluid and with less effort, and yet just as invigorating. Several friends have commented on the change.

The Art of Swimming is, as far as I know, the only book devoted specifically to swimming and the Alexander Technique. I found it very readable and I think it would make a good introduction to the ideas of the Technique for swimmers. I'd also recommend the book that got me started by Rickover, called "Fitness Without Stress - A Guide to the Alexander Technique". Also a book called "The Authorised Summaries of the Four Books of F.M. Alexander". END

Getting close to God ...

This book is illuminating, concise, insightful, and inspirational. It is exceptionally written. It poses hard questions, and answers those questions from a godly perspective using the stories of Biblical characters and the words of Christ to answer. It synthesizes both Old and New Testaments in answering questions such as "What is God Like?" But most importantly, Lloyd explains the answers not just from a platform of righteousness, but also in the context of man with his human sufferings, inherent weaknesses, fear, pride, doubt, and distrust. Lloyd offers a rich distillation of the Biblical principles and deals directly with those hard questions which people face.

Great! It addresses all the questions we ALL want to ask.

Great!! This book takes all the hard questions, and gives us clear answers that don't leave us wondering 'how does this translate to real life.' The chapter on 'What Can I do with My Moods?' really helped me. Buy 2 copies one for yourself and one to share with a friend!

This is book on ADD is wonderful. It is a very informative book on ADD and ADHD. I now understand more of what my child is going through and helped me deal with the disorder. I have two children that have ADD/ADHD, one also has a learning disorder. I learned so much from this book. It gave me so much information, I actually felt I learned a great deal after reading it. This is a must have book if you are wanting basic/informative information on ADD/ADHD, for your children. It even including some information on learning disability and it's association with ADD.

A "must-read" for every parent of a child with ADD/ADHD!

After reading this book, I have a much more effective and positive "bag of tricks" for helping my ADHD child at home and in school. The information on education rights, how to determine the best educational placement and effective accomodations is one of the best I've read! I feel I am better able to advocate for my child in school and help him manage his behavior.

McEwan really understands ADD and its impact on the child, his/her family, and school success. She offers real-life information for real families!

Forget NASCAR - Bring on the Open Wheelers !

For those outside the loop of racing, NASCAR garners a great deal of attention. Lost in all the attention paid to that series is a great style of racing collectively known as "open wheel" or "Champ Car." The series has evolved over the years but one thing has always remained. The races are fast, exciting and very competitive. How exciting? Put 800+ horsepower in a 1,600lb car that stands at knee level and enjoy the fun! If you are a fan - new or old - this series from Autocourse is a must-have. Autocourse started doing yearbooks 40+ years ago for the Formula One Grand Prix series and they have grown to include Champ Cars. They offer a tremendous amount of detail about the teams, drivers, cars, technical advances, etc. They also showcase the support series and the up-and-coming drivers in them. Each race is covered in detail with all qualifying times and finishing spots as well as highlights of the event itself. Photography is 100% incredible. That's another point. I enjoy doing my own photography and sometimes it's easy to lose track of things, especially if you don't get the film developed for a while. This book offers tremendous resource materials for someone maintaining photo albums of the events themselves. Basically, if you have a question about this style of racing, you'll find it in this book.

A must have for every CART fan!
