Fourth Kirsten Book in the American Girls Series

"Happy Birthday, Kirsten!" takes place on the Minnesota frontier in 1854, where a 9-year-old girl named Kirsten Larson lives with her Swedish immigrant family. In this book, she and her friends plan on making a quilt for their teacher, Miss Winston. However, Kirsten is much too busy with her added chores to be an active part of the group. Not only that, but she's uncertain about whether or not she'll be able to celebrate her upcoming tenth birthday (she was unable to do so the previous year), because of her mother's pregnancy. Despite Kirsten's dilemmas, the story has a happy ending for everyone, involving a new sibling, a litter of kittens, and a barn-raising party.

For being such a small book (59 pages), "Happy Birthday, Kirsten!" has quite a bit of historical info, mainly in the last six pages, titled "Growing up in 1854." In addition, there are numerous bright and colorful photos and pictures on practically every page in this book, drawn by the talented Renée Graef. This is an ideal book/series for preteen girls who like historical settings. If you liked this book, then you'll probably enjoy the other Kirsten books in this American Girls series as well.

It is springtime. Kirsten and her cousin Anna were beating rugs when they saw tornado clouds start to form. Everyone went into their cellar. Kirsten is turning ten in one month. She has to stay home from school because her mom is having a baby and needs help around the house. Kirsten is sad and angry because she thinks she will miss out on all the fun at school, especially making a quilt for their teacher. Find out what happens by reading the rest of this book.

This is another in the American Girls Short Stories series about Kirsten Larson, a nine-year-old girl from Sweden, whose family has moved to frontier Minnesota of 1854. In this book, Kirsten's mother is pregnant, and that means that Kirsten must do her own chores, plus those that her mother can no longer perform. With her birthday coming up, and all of her friends having fun working on a quilt for their teacher, Kirsten finds that she must concentrate on the work that must be done. How will it work out for Kirsten?

This is another wonderful story, with an important lesson. In it, Kirsten (and the reader) learns about responsibility and working together. As always, Renee Graef's illustrations are wonderful, and the final chapter (on growing up in 1854) is interesting and informative.

Ray Carney's The Films of John Cassavetes: The Adventure of Insecurity has become my essential viewing guide to Cassavetes' films and it has changed the way I now look at all film.

Carney's writing is so different from most film criticism. It reads so clearly. You won't find any jargon, or fancy-schmancy film-book theories here. He doesn't attempt to explain the films or their characters by offering simplified psychological or sociological understandings. Instead, Carney shows how valuable it is to stay with the complex experiences offered in the films, to allow yourself to let the films teach you something new. Carney argues that all great art can give us new powers of understanding, more perceptive eyes and ears. Carney's deep belief in the importance of art comes through in his writing as the most radical, original and hopeful statements on art that I've ever read. I highly recommend you check out his web site at http://people.bu.edu/rcarney which features his writing about other indie filmmakers, masterwork paintings and American culture.

This insightful book about Cassavetes by Ray Carney will open up a new way of seeing and knowing film. Carney is most persuasive about the importance of film as the newest art form. Gone are the canned, predictable experiences of current day studio films. Cassavetes' films are about life as we all experience it, in all its complexity, richness and craziness. Carney's easy-to-understand text will open up Cassavetes' films to you as a way to embrace life and art through film. Cassavetes wrestled with the questions we all wrestle with and allows you to form your own answers and understanding. A wonderful book about this film giant!

If you want to know more about Cassavetes and his films, Ray Carney has a MEGA-WEBSITE. Search on Cassavetes on any search engine to find it. You won't be sorry! It includes great background information on how Cassavetes made his movies, along with terrific photos of the genius at work. A must for indie film lovers and aspiring directors...

This is the best treatment of the person and work of the Holy Spirit in a Christians life. i found it to be extremely refreshing and i thought his exegesis followed by the testimonies of the great men of Christendom were inspiring. Martin's thesis is that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is not about santification(what he calls the normal work of the HS) but to uphold the name of Jesus and give a supernatural desire to know him, to love him, and to spread his name. Lloyed-Jones knew this book would be controversial, but his exegesis along with his history of the early church since Pentecost makes a powerful case. Overall, i recommend this book to any seminary student who wants to add to his knowledge of the person and work of God the Holy Spirit. We really do have a supernatural faith.

This is the clearest and most convincing expostition of the baptism/infilling of the Holy Spirit as a second work of grace that I have ever read. Lloyd-Jones is very articulate, and presents his arguments with great clarity. Be warned - after reading this book, you will find it difficult to disagree with him!

Jones has a unique view of the Holy Spirit.

For a reformed author, D. Martyn Lloyd Jones has a unique view of the Holy Spirit. Unlike most Baptist and Reformed authors he holds that a believer may not initially be baptized by the Holy Spirit on conversion. His view is similar in some ways to that of many charismatics. However, Jones emphasizes the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit and sees the signs of his baptism as a new power to bear witness to Christ accompanied by assurance and "joy unspeakable". It is good reading and should make the reader rethink his view of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

In this episode, Kirsten begins school. As she struggles to learn her lessons in a new language, she makes a new friend, Singing Bird, an Indian girl of about Kirsten's age.

This is another lesson in friendship and hard work, one masterfully told. Again, Renee Graef's illustrations are plentiful, and of a perfect style for the story. My nine-year-old daughter loves this wonderful book, and so do I.

This is a sweet tale about a little pioneer girl named Kirsten who is a Swedish immigrant and has a little difficulty speaking English- which gets trouble from her tough teacher. Things worsen as the teacher moves in with her aunt and uncle who Kirsten's family lives near and eats supper with every night. Kirsten finds her solace by running into the woods to play with her secret friend, a young Indian girl named Singing Bird. Everything in this book is great- from the stern but kindly teacher, to the friendship with the Indian girl.

In this book, Kirsten's American Indian friend, Singing Bird, returns. Almost immediately disaster strikes, when Kirsten's secret friendship is discovered, and her mother orders Kirsten to never see Singing Bird again. However, when Kirsten's brother Peter gets lost in the woods, Kirsten turns to a friend who can help when others can't. It proves a chance for the whole family to learn a lesson.

As an added bonus, this book contains a chapter on the Sioux Indians, and instructions on making a charm bag. I never ceased to be amazed at the quality of the American Girls books. With wonderful illustration, the book tells a great story that teaches a valuable lesson. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with a young daughter. My daughter and I both love these books!

Kirsten on the Trail is a good story for early readers and children who can hold their attention to a twenty minute story.

This is the tale of frontier life and the interaction of a pioneer girl and her indian friend of the same age. Theirs is a secrete relationship -- history has told their parents to be wary of each other and they are forbidden to play together.

The disappearance of Kirsten's younger brother and his rescue by Kirsten's indian friend allows the parents of the pioneer girl to accept the the innate goodness of a child from a different culture. This book introduces pioneer life, the clash of indian and pioneer cultures and the acceptance of difference to young readers. Its a story my kids like.

In that story, Kirsten was ordered not to play with Singing bird any longer. Singing Bird leaves. In this new short story, which forst appeared in American Girl magazine, Singing Bird is back. Kirsten wants to see her, but cannot break her rules. Can she and Singing Bird meet again and keep their friendship a secret or will everything fall apart? Kirsten learns another lesson in this great book for little girls.

This is a very interesting book. You'll be so entertained when reading this thing that you won't realize what else you're doing... learning history! Yep.. a lot of this book is about scandalous things of the past.
I would suggest this book to any and everyone (as long as they're over a certain age. Some of it might not be appropriate for younger kids, but I doubt they'd even WANT to read this book.)
Read about people who met their deaths while sitting on the toilet or having sex! Learn about how much fly feces is in your candy bar! Most of all, have FUN with this book. It's really thick, so it should keep you entertained for quite awhile.

When I first received my copy of Maniquette, it was with great apprehension that I opened the book and began to read the pages. Were the rumors true? Could this book really be the answer to Y2K?

The answer: Yes.

If you read this book it will be like watching Fight Club and Boondock Saints simultaneously. There will be so much testosterone flowing through your feeble veins that you will immediately go into your back yard and build a cathedral. If you don't have a back yard then you will build one.

Do not be fooled by imitations. Maniquette is the only male-oriented book fully endorsed by the mystical power of the Hippo. Hippos are known for two things: for their sexual prowess and their wisdom. If you wish to attain either of these traits, I suggest you stop cryin' and start buyin', son...

Comical, practical, and mostly true

Review Date: 2006-07-21
Maniquette is a book that everyone should read. The premise is simple: 21st century society has become increasingly feminized. A man today is a watered down version of what he once was, and the future for this entity formerly known as man appears to be even more troublesome.

The 479 rules in Maniquette offer advice on how to stem the tide. The book discusses such topics as alcoholic consumption, the pursuit of women, and general rules on how a man should act. If you agree with the premise, you'll find yourself mainly nodding in agreement. If you don't agree with the premise, you'll find it wildly entertaining nonetheless.

The book is easy to read and would make a great Christmas gift. The principal author also writes for cbssportsline.com, I noticed, and his skill with words comes through in this work. The comedic value lies both with the rules and the author's ability to frame them. I promise that you won't regret this purchase.

The editorial review/synopsis written by Susan Hepler for this book could not be more wrong. Although the authors do not "dumb down" the judicial process for children, they present it in a fun, organized manner that is engaging to children. I've read this aloud to several very young children, all of whom loved it. In fact, one 3-year old child has nearly the entire book memorized. The illustrations are fantastic and accurate, and the story is entertaining, light-hearted, funny, and educational. Perhaps we should expect more out of our children, and hope that they use intelligent books like this one to learn actively, rather than insisting that authors write simplistic, silly books that cater to some children's (and parents') laziness.

Peter and Cheryl Barnes have opened the doors to the Supreme Court and taken some of the mystery out of the judicial process. Told in rhyme and chock full of information, vocabulary and other fun facts, Chief Justice Marshall J. Mouse and his fellow mice justices show youngsters, step by step, how a law is challenged and makes it way through the court...from petition and oral arguments, to the work by court clerks and conferences by the justices, to handing down the final opinion. Cheryl Barnes marvelous, detailed illustrations include the actual architecture and decor of several rooms inside the U.S. Supreme Court. In addition, there are historical notes and other factual information about the Court, famous cases and several justices at the end of the book, to augment lessons and discussions. Marshall, the Courthouse Mouse is a fascinating introduction to the Supreme Court, that will whet the appetite of kids 5 and up and have them asking for more.

I bought this book after briefly glancing through it as a gift for a friend. After getting it home, I didn't want to give it away. Madeleine L'Engle writes beautifully about not only Christmas but the entire Christian life and sums it up in this word: Love. 10th Night evoked in me both joy and pain at what Christmas can be but often isn't. Her insights as a mother into Mary's life as the mother of the Savior were poignant as well as the fears, pain and joy she has experienced for her own children. Additionally, as someone only vaguely familiar with the ancient Christian calendar, I came to appreciate what the celebration and meditation on Advent, Epiphany, etc., could bring to me as a Christian. I wholeheartedly recommend this book for the Christian to encouurage them at any time of the year time and for the non-believer to give them a glimpse of Divine Love.

Hands down a must have for ANY child. My five year old daughter may not be dealing with a "travelin' eye", but this book has proven to be a creative, colorful, compassionate way to teach her about the differences that we all have. She has also come to appreciate how Jenny, and other kiddos she might know, might be feeling about their differences. Jenny did a phenomenal job of capturing childrens' attention with her illustrations and bright colors, but what makes this book truly stand out from the rest is her the way she approaches what could have been an awkward subject with pure honesty and humor. My Travelin' Eye is delightful. It's such a creative approach to the topic of strabismus. It isn't easy to find stories to explain eye problems to children. This is perfect. The illustrations are such fun -- especially the 'fashion-patches' and ophthalmologist's office.

What a helpful, creative book!

This cheerful picture book by new author Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw is dear to my heart as my son also has a wandering or travelin' eye. I wish I'd had this book when he had to wear a patch and glasses to school for the first time. Jenny Sue, in a loving manner, portrays, through her text and illustrations, what it is like for a child with a travelin' eye.

In this semi-autobiography of herself as a little girl Jenny Sue describes how she saw the world with each eye and the gift each eye gave to her, one an artist and the other a navigator. However, when she had to wear a patch and glasses, how did she cope with suddenly seeing in a different way and with the pointing of the other children? Young readers will be entranced to find out.

The mixed media illustrations are delightful and inspire children to turn the pages just to see what they can find in each picture: counting opportunities, finding objects, and trying Jenny Sue's art activities. Teachers and parents will also find this an inspiring book for their children with wandering eyes, or for a unit on understanding disabilities. This picture book is highly recommended for young children, ages 3-8.
