I have to agree with the previous reviewers: this book of poems is great stuff. I am not one to normally like poetry, but I took a flier on this one just because of the great reviews. And they were dead on.

But I do have to say this: if this book is even half autobiographical, I feel terribly sorry for Mr. Hawyley's family, and his in-laws (assuming he has any).

All in all, a great read. I was literally laughing outloud at some of the poems. A definite book for a public-reading forum.

Hilarious, wierd, and honest...almost too honest

...a very entertaining, genuine and refreshing read. Most of us have a little voice in our head which tells us not to talk or act when we think of something very funny or outrageous yet completely inappropriate to vocalize or act upon. Well it appears that the voice in Mr. Hawley's head is silent. We can all relate to his poetic tales and images, particularly if one was ever an 8 or 15 year old boy. If Frohes Wandern is truly autobiographical I feel sorry for his parents.

If you like Vonnegut...

you'll love this guy. A book of poems well worth (...). Hawley has a very witty style, remarkable for its naked truth about fears, fantasies and the meanderings of a wonderfully wacky mind. The reader is taken on a journey through laughter, embarassment, tears and ultimatley a sense of common humanity. This one will stay on my shelf.

Perhaps the best introduction to Scotland's history ever written

Review Date: 2007-08-17
Walter Scott's History of Scotland written for his young grandson, with better editing and presentation, should be the perfect companion piece to many of Sir Walter's poems and novels. This Cumberland House 4-volume edition has large enough print and contains a helpful list of the Kings of Scotland and a good index. Lacking are much needed maps. Nonetheless, this is a truly great but simple introduction to the long history of Scotland in the "great man" genre of historical writing.

Fans of Mel Gibson's movie BRAVEHEART will be enchanted by the treatment of England's King Edward I, Longshanks -- corrupter of Robert the Bruce and conqueror in the end of Sir William Wallace. These and other great men and women as well as the Stuart Kings all strut across Walter Scott's well-lighted stage.

This first in a four volume edition covers the years 1033 - 1542. We see Scotland as a nation never conquered by Normans and intent on national independence but increasingly coveted and invaded by the Normanized English. We begin with MacBeth. We conclude with the struggle between England's Henry VIII and Scotland's James V, closing the Roman Catholic centuries of Scotland with the death of James just after the birth of his unhappy daughter Mary, "the Queen of Scots."

Let Chapter XVII, "Robert III" (1390 - 1406) serve as one of several examples of how determined readers of Walter Scott can easily and pleasantly flesh out the fiction of "the Wizard of the North." Readers of Scott's novel THE FAIR MAID OF PERTH will find here a brief but memorable description of events behind that bloody novel.

All in all, FROM BANNOCKBURN TO FLODDEN is a book well worth the time of anyone just beginning to read into the history of Scotland

Although I am a Spanish speaking reader, I found this book most lovely and interesting from the first page. It is written in a clear style that makes it easy to understand and attractive to read. Writing History is a hard task, not suitable for everybody. Sir Walter Scott is certainly one of the greatest British poets and here he combines all his virtues in this matter with a great skill to narrate past events which almost turns this book into a "Romantic History" . It is wonderfuly adecquate for kids as it was originally intended even to those learning English as a second language.

A great tool for your video poker arsenal

This may seem a little pricey for what you get (3.5" x 7" inches, and 34 pages), but if you consider the time it would take you to compile 37 VP games and almost 200 pay tables, into a compact little easy to read notebook that you can carry with you to the casinos...it's really a bargain, and a necessary tool for any recreational or serious VP player.

The guide is essential for separating the good VP machines from the bad ones. There are nine pay tables for Deuces Wild that range from 100.76% to 94.82% returns, eight pay tables for Jacks or Better, seven pay tables for Double Bonus Poker, nine for Double Double Bonus Poker, eight for Joker Poker, and many more.

The progressive totals are also a nice feature of the guide. Most of us wouldn't touch a Jacks or Better machine that only had a 95% return, but did you know that you could play it if it was a progressive and paid $3,085 or more? It's the little things like that, and the Multi-Strike and Super Times Pay return percentages that show this was a well thought out guide.

I only have one small complaint about the guide; I wish it were about one or two inches shorter so that it could fit in your back pocket without sticking out. The longer pay tables could easily be continued on the next page, and if they had to add a couple of pages to the guide to compensate for shortening the pages, that wouldn't really be a problem since it is only about an eighth of an inch thick. Jean or Viktor, hope your listening ;)

Finally - just the book I've been waiting for. As long as I've been playing video poker, I've yearned for handy listing of the percent payback for the various games and paytables associated with them. I'd even started building the tables myself from numerous books on the subject of Video Poker. My efforts were never satisfactory because I never seemed to have the value for the machine I was standing in front of at the time - i.e. when I really needed it. This book is nearly perfect. It has numerous precentages for all (I haven't found one missing yet) each of the popular games that you find in casinos these days with various permutations of their paytables - sadly these are mostly NOT to the players advantage, but the authors' can't be faulted for that. My only complaint is the spiral-bound book is a smidge long for the average man's pocket and has a lame textual style for the little prose it contains that uses a sailor-schtick which I found a bit inappropriate. However, you don't buy this for the prose - you buy it for the NUMBERS and the numbers are just fine.

A Handy Tool for any Video Poker Player

This book is exactly what is claims to be. It's a pocket guide that takes the guess work out of determining the payback percentage on all the popular video poker games and then some. The volatility ratings are a nice touch and are very helpful in determining what games to play based on the size of your bankroll.

*Fundamentalisms Observed* (the 1st volume of 5) is perhaps the most prestigious contribution yet to the ever expanding literature on the subject. Covering this global phenomenon in several traditions, and with a tight typology, this volume brings together a high-powered team of academics from a dozen disciplines and countries to cover such fundamentalisms as North American Protestantism (Chp. 1), Roman Catholicism (Chp. 2), Protestant fundamentalism in Latin America (Chp. 3), Haredim Jewish fundamentalism (Chp. 4), Zionist Jewish fundamentalism (Chp. 5), Sunni Arab fundamentalism (Chp. 6), Shi'ite fundamentalism (Chp. 7), Islamic fundamentalism in South Asia, (Chp. 8), Hindu fundamentalism (Chp. 9), Fundamentalism in the Sikh tradition (Chp. 10), Buddhist fundamentalism in the Theravadin tradition (Chp. 11), Islamic resurgence in Malaysia and Indonesia (Chp. 12), Confucian revivalism in East Asia (Chp. 13) and Fundamamentalism in Japan (Chp. 14). What is particularly illuminating is the analytical conclusion (Chp. 15) where 9 points are layed out baring on the similarities in the fundamentalisms observed. Thus far, the definitive study on the subject (surpassing Lawrence's *Defenders of God*) and an important reference on the subject for scholar and layman alike

This is the first of five volumes by The Fundamentalism Project. It is the only volume I have read to date. This volume begins with North American Protestant Fundamentalism, for which the term "fundamentalism" was coined and then studies in 15 more sections, each with a different author, (across 13 chapters) other religious movements around the world that have reacted to modernity in a way that might be described as "fundamentalistic" ... even if in quite a different form than North American Protestant Fundamentalism. The book may (almost) be worthwhile for its chapter on North American Protestantism alone but there is a huge amount more. The concluding chapter then tries to determine what might be "fundamentalistic" about all the religions presented thus far. This is just a beginning and it appears that study of the remaining four volumes might be needed to integrate all the material covered in this introductory volume alone.

What impressed me most was how many people worldwide are far from the kind of "intellectual" religion expressed, say, by Unitarian Universalism or the Society of Friends, let alone from secular humanism and atheism. I suppose I should have known this but until I read through here I had not been mindful of it. Try explaining the appeal of Gnostic Christian mythology to any of the believers of these fundamentalisms and I think you will find a gap too wide to cross.

I had not even paid attention to the issues found in Roman Catholic Traditionalism in the U.S., Roman Catholic Activist Conversation in the U.S., or Protestant Fundamentalism in Latin America. As section after section moved away from the Protestant Fundamentalism I was familar with, I began to feel overwhelmed by the varieties of what seem to be emotionally dominated belief systems. Moving through Jewish, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist, and Japanese forms, in a survey, text book form but nonetheless considerable detail told me I was "not in Kansas anymore".

The five volumes may be too much for me and best suited for scholars or students of religion. I plan to go on next to Volume 5 (Fundamentalisms Comprehended) and see if it provides an appropriate summary for a lay reader such as myself. The conclusion of this book ("Fundamentalisms Observed"), "An Interim Report on a Hypothetical Family" does provide some summary information but it is brief and much of the details from the early sections seem not digested yet here into summary form. It seems what may emerge is an understanding of fundamentalisms that is not rooted in North American Protestant Fundamentalism, but has abstracted key elements of what seem like quite different ways of reacting to modernity with some aims of preservation.

The major value of this volume, for me, as a lay reader, is to realize that there is an enormous amount and variety of religious activity in the world which is resisting modernity and which seems irrational. Given my liberal U.S. Protestant background, I'd never seen in such detail what much of the rest of the world apparently believes and it is quite disconcerting to find out. What makes it more disconcerting is seeing how readily many of these movements seem organized so as to mobilize their followers politically.

Review of "Gentry's Rio Mayo Plants"

For anyone interested in the vegetation of Sonora, Mexico this book is a must! Back in the early 1980s I was very fortunate to be able to buy a copy of the original Smithsonian book published in 1942 and this current version is a wonderful update of that earlier work. The new book includes additional plant accounts from years of plant collecting in southeast Sonora by botanists at the University of Arizona in the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s. The authors are careful to keep Gentry's original accounts in parentheses.

Gentry spent a considerable amount of time traveling in the Alamos region of southeast Sonora during the late 1930s and during these travels he collected interesting information concerning the local names and medicinal uses of the plants of southern Sonora. In reading the plant descriptions and associated plant habitats you can almost envision the plant growing and flowering in its native habitat. This book is nicely complimented by "Sonoran Desert Plants" and "The Trees of Sonora, Mexico" which look with greater depth into the larger plants and trees of Sonora.

I was given the opportunity to catalog Dr. Gentry's herbarium collection at the Desert Botanical Garden in 1987-88. I haven't seen the new edition mentioned here, but read the original work at the time I was cataloging his herbarium specimens. Through it, I was able to share his experience as an explorer in the spirit of John Wesley Powell, someone who knew that the American southwest is best delineated by watersheds, not along false lat/long lines. I met Dr. Gentry a couple of times, and remember the occasions well. Last time I saw him, when I was cataloging his collection, I overheard a conversation between him and a consultant for the Fort McDowell Indian Community. The consultant was asking about desert-adapted crop plants. Dr. Gentry went into great detail describing many desert plants suited to agriculture - tepary beans, jojoba, Lippia (Mexican oregano), agave, chiltepines, gum arabic, etc. I learned a lot just by eavesdropping. The consultant listened, but did not hear the words. He recommended that the Fort McDowell people plant cotton. Not because it was best suited to desert agriculture - far from that. They planted cotton because it needs vast quantities of water. They did not want the best desert-adapted crops. What they wanted, instead, was the best crop for wasting water, so that they could establish valid rights to the water. Worse, I watched them clear off vast acreages of mesquite forests to make room for the water-wasting cotton crop. The Hopi call this koyaanisqatsi. This book should help folks in southwestern north America realize that we have a bounteous resource, if we can only learn to use it.

Located in a transition zone between the Sonoran Desert and the tropics, this region is well known for its biodiversity, thanks to a 1942 study by botanist Howard Scott Gentry. Revision of his classic work began before his death in 1993. For researchers, this is a must-read book. It provides a clear overview of botanical studies of the Rio Mayo, a contemporary view of the vegatation, excerpts from the original text and an annotated list of plants.

Gerrit and I wrote this from a deep love for the church and desire to help it to base its life and decisions upon a theological rather than cultural foundation. Many denominations are struggling with their identity and message. It is crucial that the church have the courage and wisdom to think theologically. This book is written for this purpose and goal. It is our hope that all those struggling with the future and direction of the church wrestle with the ideas and questions we set forth, in hope that we might together be faithful to God in our response to His love.

As I say in the subject - Gerrit rocks! Beyond that subjective assertion, I will say that he is a gifted writer who loves the Lord Jesus. This book is written for a denomination (PCUSA) in crisis - one that struggles to be the faithful bride of Christ. Gerrit gives us a godly vision for who and what we could be as the chosen bride. His "study paper" reads as a devotional.

Now, he owes me for saying such nice things. :)

Thank you, Reverends Dawson and Patterson, for painting for us in brilliant clarity the vision of the Church that so many of us seem to have forgotten! The Church in the West, particularly what's commonly known as the "mainline church", has, by and large, lost her bearings inmidst of a dense, often dangerously enticing, moral fog. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), to whom both Dawson and Patterson belong, is one of those denominations that face both an ongoing, rapid membership loss, and a tremendous temptation to redefine who the Church should be, based on popular culture and postmodern trends. In reality, the True Church of Jesus Christ can have no other identity than the one given to her by the God who made and redeemed her, and who gives her her mandate for living. Positive, encouraging, and deeply moving, "Given and Sent in One Love" calls us back to exulting in the grace of the One who designed the Church as the "triple gift"...and Who alone can give to her the gifts of unity, purity, and peace.

Gloria is a rather klutzy angel who feels unfit and forgotten. But deep down inside herself, Gloria finds the power to believe in herself when no one else does and meets a child born in poverty who turns out to be the son of God. Because she can see beyond appearances, Gloria not only brings the good news to the poor, she also announces that it is the people of poverty who are also God's own children. Gloria: The Christmas Angel is a wonderfully delightful Christmas picturebook story for young readers ages 4 to 8 that is both entertaining and profound.

THE GO-GETTERS: Market Driven to Career Success is an outstanding resource for people looking for a great career match. When I started my search I sent out a bunch of resumes to ads in the paper, and don't recall getting one response - not a targeted campaign but desperate scramble. After I followed the approach the author prescribes I ended up with 4 offers that showed up at the same time. This book will relieve the stress many feel when looking for a new position.

I've been through my share of job searches during my career, so I pretty much knew the traditional routine of searching the classifieds and on-line job sites, networking with friends and business associates, etc. However, when I read The Go-Getters it was really eye-opening and refreshing. My job search approach and techniques were so outdated! This book helped me to focus my career goals and to implement a proactive job search that I'm sure gave me an advantage over my competition. The main precept of the book is that your job search strategy should be formulated like a business strategy in the sense that it is market-driven. As the author explains this concept and how to implement it, I kept thinking, "Wow, this makes so much sense!" Besides offering valuable, unique information for job searchers, I would recommend this book because it is presented in a way that is entertaining and easy to understand.

My job search since graduating at UCLA has been one big disappointment.

For the few interesting jobs offered at my university career fair, I faced tons of competition. I didn't even get a 2nd interview once. I spent 6 months looking for a job after graduation. Few jobs, however, interested me especially in the newspaper classifieds. Whenever I found a cool job in Monster.com, HotJobs, or another job website, I NEVER EVER received back a reply. A friend found me a job, but the pay was so little it wasn't worth accepting.

Before I started my job search, I attend a few career workshops at school and read the popular career books like What Color Is Your Parachute and Job Search for Dummies. While I realize learning about resumes and interviews is important, I quickly learned that these tools don't help you find potential employers.

Then a friend recommended that I read the book THE GO-GETTERS: Market Driven To Career Success. Once I read the introduction and first chapter, I knew this book was totally different, it's truly something special. It's not even a typical "how to" reference book. It's a story of 10 job hunters and how they find career success.

I must say since I have read the book and implemented some of the strategies, I have 3 job offers all in the area that I was searching for. Now the question is which one do I take. They are all so great!!!

The author, David Lee, who I've never heard of before, has crafted a very special book about the job hunt. The guides are extremely practical and gives incredible insights on what I most wanted to know. I know I'm repeating what's said in the Amazon.com description, but it's true, THE GO-GETTERS teaches you how to find companies ready to hire before they advertise in the newspapers and job websites.

The book teaches the most important aspects of the job search as far as I'm concerned - how to increase career alternatives, how to find companies ready to hire that don't advertise vacancies or recruit at job fairs, how to find interesting companies I've never heard of before, how to approach companies in a business-like manner, and how to understand what companies look for in an interview.

THE GO-GETTERS' main theme is to elevate the job search from just treating it like a "job" to treating the job search with a market-driven business mentality. This makes complete sense to me since the job search is such a competitive process.

All I can say to the author is, "thanks!"

I never had a successful job hunt until I read THE GO-GETTERS. And reading it only took me a couple hours - the book is only 120 pages. Other career books are 300, 400, 500 pages. Who has time to read a reference book when you're looking for a job!

Great Submissions For Coaches To Build Drills To

This book offers outstanding ways into several high ratio of success finishing moves. It builds on Shingitai Jujitsu's methodology of instruction where one must first close the gap, next gain dominate position/control, and then end the fight. Steve teaches different ways from different controlling positions into different submissions. You must study the text, develop drills, and use the drills. This is definitely a coaching/instructional manual.

Another great book from Steve Scott

Mr. Scott has taken his years of coaching experience and written another easy to use, informative, text. Much like his Armlock Encyclopedia, this book breaks down each technique into easy steps. The chokes in this book will help everyone who is interested; from the average, couch riding, UFC wannabe, to the serious groundfighting technician.
