I am sure it would be possible to have a not-great Companions class, but all three of the ones I've taken at my Episcopal church have been personally fulfilling and also have brought about much deeper relationships among the people who have participated.

Ahead of the times but part of them as wellReview Date: 2008-07-29
You will be surprised by some of the predictions, the accuracy of some and the inaccuracy of others, but you won't be bored. Each page made me eager to read more. This author is not simply spouting opinions.
The limits on resources are examined comprehensively, not just those most commonly found such as iron ore and coal but even the more unusual ones such as magnesium. The author makes no apology for advocating population control through birth control by looking at man's situation from the standpoint of a biological population that will be controlled by nature if the species does not act to control itself. His estimate of world population for the year 2000 is about a billion less than it has turned out to be. Brown wrote before anyone knew of the possibilities opened up by genetic engineering, so his concerns about the physical degradation of humanity from the failure of natural selection are, I believe, moot, when it looks like genetic problems will at some point be "curable" or eliminated through genetic modification.
Environmental degradation is mentioned but by no means emphasized. In the discussion of food supplies it is suggested that carbon dioxide might be deliberately increased in the atmosphere (to the point of doubling it) in order to increase the growth of plants! The greenhouse effect is never mentioned. Interestingly, Brown speaks of the amount of coal that would have to be burned to double atmospheric carbon dioxide as an astronomical figure of 500 billion tons, "more than man has consumed up to now". I checked current statistics on coal consumption and the world is now using 1% of that amount every year. What irony that we are unintentionally doing what those in the past thought might be a good idea but that we now know is not.
Solar energy is mentioned as a future hope. Since only thermocouples are brought up, photovoltaic solar cells appear to be a later development. Wind power is only mentioned in passing. Nuclear power is said to offer potential but as no commercial nuclear power plants were built at the time, the assessment is encouraging but speaks mainly in terms of the availability of uranium ore.
Nuclear war was a serious prospect in those early days of Soviet - American confrontation. The author feels that the odds are in favor of an agrarian civilization in the future due to advanced civilization succumbing to devastating war. Again, this book came before the concept of nuclear winter was developed which questions the ability of agriculture to continue after a war with atomic weapons.
A few charts and graphs are provided, one of which shows that the United States was far more the leader of consumption in the world of the 1950's than it is now. The point can easily be made that Americans have used a substantial portion of the resources of the earth, something to be kept in mind when the argument is heard that the United States should do nothing to conserve until other nations do too.
As an elementary school pupil just after this book was written, I recall a mention of resource limits in a textbook. But since that time until relatively recently the whole subject seemed to drop beneath notice. This book is proof that there were thoughtful folks decades ago who recognized many of the challenges that were to come in the basic problem of resource consumption and population. Brown's book is by no means hysterical or even excited; he simply tries to look at known facts and project them into the future, something that unfortunately has been little practiced in the years that followed.
Looking back on the book now, it's clear that steps could have been taken to ease the situation that presses upon us now. Unfortunately, little happened with the general public. Though business has pursued efficiency of production as a matter of course, we still have ended up waiting for high prices to force an issue that foresight could have helped us avoid. Harrison Brown made the effort to inform the public with this excellent book.

"(Schmidt) includes many of the labs students will complete, eliminating the need for an additional lab text. There are enough questions at the end of the chapter to allow me to choose those that I want emphasize when I cannot cover all material in the classroom."

"I really like the review questions and student exercises at the ends of the chapters. I take many of my exam questions from them. They are superior to those found in other texts I have used in the past.
The Complete A+ Guide to PC Repair 2005 Edition is an excellent A+ prep book. Even after almost 15 years of experience troubleshooting and repairing computers, I still keep a copy handy for reference. If a student (or anyone preparing for the A+ test) buys only one textbook, this should be it!"

"The layout is excellent. The labs are incorporated into the book instead of requiring students to buy a separate book for labs only. It is a great concept that I'd like to see from more authors."

Great book!Review Date: 2003-04-13
I am very impressed
We have already adopted Schmidt's 2nd edition for use with my class at Springfield Technical Community College in Springfield, MA, and I am very impressed with it. I like the updated information and the addition of some review questions in Chp 6 on Troubleshooting. The end of the chapter exercises make preparing classroom activities much easier.
What a joy to have found this book.
I own every book, it seems, on computer repair. At last, I have found a book that is well written and easy to understand. Ms. Schmidt's explanations are straight forward and well illustrated. What a joy to have found this book.
Great book! this book will enable me to better instruct my students because the labs/exercises will save me many hours fine tuning labs that I have prepared. Other instructors in the same boat know how very difficult and time consuming it is to prepare and test lab exercises, and, be successful in ensuring that labs provide a positive learning experience. The chapter reviews and tests are reinforcement and well written and cover all important topics. I feel overwhelmed knowing that, finally, I will have such an excellent instructional computer book for my students. Please share my thoughts and thanks to Cheryl A. Schmidt. There is not to much to say because the text explains it all. For those of you who have taken a class that requires this book you know what I'm talking about. Not only have I had the pleasure of owning this valuble textbook, I have also had the privilege of being a former student of Cheryl Schmidt's here at FCCJ in Jacksonville, FL.
Ms. Schmidt is one of the finest instructors I've ever had the honor of learning from. The one theme that runs through out her textbook as well as her classes is, DOCUMENTATION, DOCUMENTATION, ......ALWAYS READ THE DOCUMENTATION.
Thank you Cheryl!
One of the BEST A+ books around hands downReview Date: 2002-09-17
Which brings me to yet another aspect of this book I really liked. It has added emphasis on troubleshooting. I have a lot of A+ books - all the standard ones most people find in bookstores and none of them focus on troubleshooting to the degree this one does. Again it makes sense since this book is supposed to be a textbook for courses that help people get a job as a PC repair tech. People bring in their computers because something isn't working correctly, right? So troubleshooting becomes an essential skill. I recognized a lot of the troubleshooting techniques I use on my job and several new ones I didn't.
Hardware and Operating Systems are given in-depth coverage. Probably far more than you would ever be tested on. For the OS portion of the test everything from DOS/Win 3.1, Win95, Win98/ME, NT, 2000/XP is examined. Even things that A+ doesn't really focus on anymore are given good coverage. Mainly because on the job you'll likely face situations where it's good to know for troubleshooting older systems.
The one thing that this book doesn't have that most other A+ books do is a cd with practice test questions. However, there a plenty of websites available that let you take practice exams (or you could just buy practice exam software separately). The other downside is that since it is a college textbook the answers to the questions are not given (they're probably in the instructor's version of this book).
In a market full of A+ books studying any one of them thoroughly will be enough to pass. But if you want something that will help you on a job too - well, you can't go wrong with this one.

OMG Corbin is the BEST!!!Review Date: 2007-04-15
Courtesy of Teens Read TooReview Date: 2006-12-24
I first saw Corbin, a 17-year old actor, on the Discovery Kids show Flight 29 Down, Vol. 1. Although I didn't follow the show every week, I was always impressed by the acting and storyline. In a nutshell, it's a lot like the television show Lost - The Complete First Season, but for the teen and pre-teen set. Not long after that, though, I saw Corbin in High School Musical (Encore Edition), which, without a doubt, is one of my favorite movies.
What I didn't know about Corbin, though, was that I'd also seen him in a number of big-screen movies, without even knowing it! Corbin had parts in Mystery Men, Galaxy Quest, and Catch That Kid, all of which I've seen. In the case of Galaxy Quest, I've probably seen it way too many times!
Whether a die-hard Corbin fan or someone who is just discovering this talented teen actor for the first time, CORBIN BLEU: UP CLOSE is a great resource. Filled with pictures from Corbin's family photo album, shots from the different television and movie sets he's been on, and candid snapshots, you'll be happy to see how this actor has grown. The book also contains a rather detailed biography, how Corbin started out in modeling and commercials, and about his shift to television and movie acting.
If you're interested in learning more about this very talented actor, you won't go wrong by picking up a copy of this reference guide. We also get a peek into Corbin's upcoming projects, which include High School Musical 2, the Disney Channel original movie Jump In!, a music CD, and college.

Web Services for VB Folks--it's about time!Review Date: 2002-06-26
The book doesn't spend too much time on the protocols-- instead it explains how to use them from VB. If you need to understand the SOAP and WSDL real deeply, get a different book like Seely's SOAP book from PH-PTR. This book is about writing Web services, nothing more or less. The chapter on SOAP, WSDL, and UDDI is nothing other than an overview. Hey, you've been warned.
Great coverage for VB.NET devsReview Date: 2002-06-19
