This is a wonderful book and uses only positive methods for training your dog. All of Ms. Scott's training games are great fun and it's amazing how quickly dogs learn the skills these games are designed to teach. This book will really help you train your dog to become a cherised family member.

Cindy has trained both of my dogs, with the same techniques and humor as she shows in her book. I bought two of the books to give as presents to new puppy owners. Her techniques work! Taz was a terror when we got him at the pound. But with Cindy's help, he has aced his obedience class and enjoyed multiple agility classes. Daisy has always been a sweet dog, and after passing the Canine Good Citizen Class, is a Delta Society Therapy Dog.
Thank you, Cindy!

Wow! What a fun book! I probably learned more from this "enlightened training" book than from any normal ordinary "dog training" book and was entertained while doing so. I got so much out of this because it was humorous and fun while very educational. My dogs are learning a new way of training and love it and it is fun for the whole family. Thank you for the fun new view of training our best friends.

Bad haircuts, "clueless" parents, pimples, hormones, loyal and/or ditsy friends, the girl's posse, dreams of the uncharted future, weird friends, untamed appetites and endless insecurities-- ZITS is a hilarious commentary on the foibles of being a teenager in middle America.

In this compendium of strips, Jeremy deals with having to get girlfriend Sara a Christmas gift (he gets her a tire); body-pierced Pierce the drummer makes his first appearance; Jeremy, on a rare free weekend with his parents at an orthodontists conference, spends the weekend in the company of an armload of horror videos *and* his overactive imagination; and then there's Ms Butcher, the Econ teacher who truly does stay up at night looking for ways to torment him.

ZITS is constantly fresh, drawn with humorous and deft exaggeration - the cover illustration showing a mountain of CDs, headphones, calculators and tapes spewing out of Jeremy's backpack should ring a familiar bell with any parent of a high-schooler. "Zits: Unzipped" has been read and reread and re-reread in my household. Scott and Borgman have put together a terrific strip that can be enjoyed by teenagers and their parents. Awesome!

Zits Unzipped is 'sketchbook 5' in the comic strip books and chronicles the life of adolescent Jeremy and his suffering parents, from his relationships with parents and friends to his on/off relationship with his girlfriend. Fans of the strip may find many they've missed over the years; newcomers will relish this coverage of the teen's ironies and agonies.

Geographically situate them thousands of miles apart connected only by email, phone and fax and instruct them to do a daily strip, plus Sunday in color. Tell these guys the content has to illustrate a lovable but sometimes impossible kid and two tolerant parents, and see what you get! Zits!

Hafemann's commentary is probably the best in the whole NIVAC series. His exegesis, while not detailed, is solid and insightful. This commentary has some really excellent theology, and some fine application as well. Given the stated aim of this series, Hafemman's commentary is first rate. Of course, it is not as detailed as Furnish, Barnett or Garland, but it does capture the flow and thrust of the letter better than most. I was impressed by its numerous insights. As for those who are worried about his theology of justification, I really can't see the problem with insisting that we are justified by faith alone, but that faith always includes works (including repentence!) within itself. No magisterial Reformer ever denied the necessity of works as a part of faith, they denied that works apart from faith can save. I highly recommend this commentary as filling a real need for the pastor preaching through 2 Corinthians.

An excellent commentary.

Dr. Hafemann's Second Corinthians is an unmatched source for understanding Paul's letter. The biggest strength of Hafemann's ministry is that it is led first and foremost by his desire to build up the followers of Christ, a goal he achieves through the teaching and preaching of the Word of God. Dr. Hafemann makes no apology towards his assurance that the promises of God are real and eternally relevant for everyone.

Hafemann brings a wealth of resources to the text of second Corinthians. He has a solid theological understanding of the WHOLE bible, with special emphasis on those sections which form the backdrop to Paul's letter. He has a fluent understanding of the original languages of both the Old and New Testament, elaborating on many of the areas where the English translation is not clear. Finally, Hafemann shows a true mastery of the text of Second Corinthians, a letter he has examined critically in two of his earlier books as well as his dissertation.

Some of the highlights I found were the unpacking of:

**Paul explanation that his suffering validates his true ministry in the Spirit, and that it is through this suffering that God is mediating the gospel to the Corinthians. **Paul's comparison of his call with the call of Moses, and his subsequent comparison of their respective ministries. **Paul's understanding that a life of faith and a life of persevering in obedience are one and the same thing.

Zondervan's hardcover binding and acid free paper insures this book will last the test of time. Its stiff pages, however, make it difficult to lay open. This is an especially annoying problem if your trying to take down some McDonald's fries while you read it :)

This commentary has been an invaluable resource in my own life. I confidently recommend it to anyone who wishes a solid understanding of Paul's view of his ministry and that of the gospel as a whole.

This commentary series is touted as a light series, but I have found that Hafemann's book gets you down deep into the world of Paul.

I have used his book when preaching on chapters 8 and 9 and have found his comments to be stimulating and provocative. I have also appreciated what Craig Blomberg says on these chapters in his "Neither Poverty nor Riches," also available from Amazon.

And he is also insightful on one of my favourite bible passages, chapter 4. I can't get enough of the concept that when God's Spirit illuminates us, it is like the original blaze of light when God said LET THERE BE LIGHT in Genesis chapter 1.
And the thought that we have been given the right to see God's glory shining in Christ's face.

Highly recommended.

The exercises are, in my opinion, one of the strongest aspects of the book. They are varied, many require thought on the part of the students, getting around the "monkey-see monkey-do" approach of some texts, and clearly distinguish between problems for practicing techniques, problems requiring critical thinking, and problems requiring more exploratory activities. Also provides a logical foundation for relating topics to specific problem areas. B) providing strategic directions for project problem solving. Helps the learning curve for students who have difficulty mapping a solution path to complex problems. C) changing the fast-track index, rewording. Makes searching a lot easier! The University of Wisconsin is extremely lucky to be gaining him as a faculty member. Everyone should buy this book and support this amazing man. Not only is Straus brilliant, but he is "much sexier in person", to quote a UN official.

From the time I first started reading it, until I had to take a break to feed myself, I was hooked! This is a very fast paced book that keeps you on edge all the way through it. The opening events set the plate for a future scenario that sadly could become a reality given the climate of the post cold-war world we live in (more specificaly, surviving after a nuclear world war)...
If you like fast-paced adventure, this book will meet your needs. The characters are well developed and easy to relate to and they will have you cheering for them in their trials and travels. It has all the trademarks of a fine Clancy novel, but, with better character development and less of the techno mumbo-jumbo.
This book will appeal to all but the youngest of readers (I would recommend it from 13 years or so on up... mostly because of some strong language). I couldn't find any previous listings, but, I look forward to any future offerings by this author. I whole-heartedly and confidently recommend this book.

Hurry up with the sequel!

This book starts accelerating in the first chapter and all you can do is hold on for the ride. A global political melt-down...
A small town story of rebellious youth... A race to unite the forces of good against evil. And a tale of friendship and rock and roll, first love and warfare. All told with a fresh voice that somehow sounds like an old school pal reminding you of your past shenanigans.
The sequel can't come soon enough for me.

Through reading these and other recent Spider-Man books (25 issues worth) one thing comes to mind: even through bad stories, Spider-Man is still the man. It may be controversial but I like the idea of Ezekiel, Morlun, the Spider totem, all of it. Spider-Man has to be changed up every once in awhile and this is a much better way to do it then killing people off, or a new costume. As Straczynski's run goes on he shows a new side to Spider-Man/Peter Parker, MJ, Aunt May, even Uncle Ben. Spider-Man is firmly in the Marvel Universe in this series, with random comings and goings from other heroes. On the other hand, Peter Parker is firmly in the real world during this run. Peter Parker in college has been tried before, but Peter Parker (as an adult of course) in high school? Well, that's different and incredibly entertaining. The new villains are memorable and the older cast reminds you why you loved them to begin with.

"Until the Stars Turn Cold" is the third trade paperback collection of issues of Volume 2 of "The Amazing Spider-Man," currently under the creative auspices of writer J. Michael Stracynski and artist John Romita, Jr. (inks by Scott Hanna). At this point in the developing narrative Stracynski has already dropped his two major bombshells that establish the new and improved Spider-Man in the previous two collections: in "Coming Home" Peter Parker discovers that his powers were not the result of a random radioactive spider bite but that he is, in fact, the avatar of the Earth's spider population, and in "Revelations" Aunt May confronts Peter about knowing he is Spider-Man.

Basically, in "Until The Stars Turn Cold," which collects issues #40-45, two things happen. First, the dust is settling from the aforementioned revelations (Aunt May gives JJJ a piece of her mind regarding her new perspective on his Spider-man vendetta), and Peter is finally getting around to doing something about his estrangement from Mary Jane. However, this is complicated by the second set of things which happen within these pages, namely a set of three-issue battles. The first is with a new villain called the Shade, and requires the help of Doctor Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts. The second is with Doctor Octopus; actually, this would be Doctor Octopi, since there is the original Otto Octavius and a new, younger, leaner, meaner, version. Of course, both conflicts thwart Peter's endeavor to reconnect with his wife (so what else is new?).

Although there are some echoes from Volume 1 in terms of the time there were two, count them, two Vultures, what Stracynski and Romita are really doing with this second story arc is their own homage to what I consider the greatest Spider-Man story of all time, in "Amazing Spider-Man" #31-33 (yes, even over the first two issues down by Romita's father when the Green Goblin learned Spidey's secret identity, the three drug issues with the Comic Code seal of approval, the death of Gwen Stacy, the wedding to Mary Jane, the death of Aunt May the first time around, or anything else you want to name as a possible alternative). If you have access to that story, which also involved Doc Ock, then check it out before or after you read these stories so that you can appreciate the resonance of the old within the new.

As a homage "Until the Stars Grow Cold" is not bad; we do not have Aunt May on death's door this time around, but we do have here constantly being cute as the dickens when it comes to dealing with her knowledge about Peter being you-know-who. Actually, the part of Stracynski's writing that I find myself enjoying the most is his wry sense of humor (which becomes pretty blatant in terms of the movie Mary Jane is making out there in Tinsletown). We will have to wait and see how this avatar of the spiders thing turns out, but Aunt May knowing (and Aunt May knowing that Mary Jane knows that she knows) is turning out pretty well. It would have to, because it changes a major element in the dynamic of the comic book.

A guide to the Ceremonies of the Amish, Mennonites, and Brethren
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-09-16
Although this People's Place Book No. 8 focuses on Amish sects, it also includes other Old Order Communities such as the Mennonites, the Old German Baptist Brethren, and the River Brethren (of which the author is a member). There are black and white photographs throughout the text.

My favorite chapter is "A Lancaster Amish Wedding" where the author creates two composite characters, Levi Lapp and Mary Beiler, then takes them through their courtship, marriage, and the early stages of establishing their own household. Many items that are included in a typical American marriage, such as flowers, a veiled bride dressed in white, and the exchange of rings are not part of this Amish wedding. Much of the wedding sermon is taken from the apocryphal Book of Tobit, and the story of how Isaac married Rebecca, and how Jacob married Rachel.

All of the bride's clothing is new, and she usually makes her own dress (in shades of blue or purple). Among older generations, at least, the bride's cap and apron would be put away after her wedding day, to be worn only once more at her funeral.

This book is full of lovingly described details, and not just for the wedding ceremonies of the Amish, Mennonites, and Brethren. It also includes baptisms (the Mennonites pour and the Brethren dunk), the choosing of ministers, funerals, Sunday services, communions, Pentecost and Love feasts, auctions, and other celebrations. The stories are fictional but depict typical happenings in actual communities. There is also a brief history of the plain people and how they emigrated to America and Canada.

The "People's Place" books are published by The People's Place, a museum and heritage center specializing in Amish and Mennonite life, located in the village of Intercourse, Pennsylvania. I've read several of them now, and can highly recommend the whole series.

This book is the eighth in the People's Place Booklet series on the Amish and other Old Order Anabaptists. This wonderful book covers a group of special occasions (such as weddings, baptisms, choosing a pastor, funerals, and much more!), explaining how they are run and what they mean. But, this is more than a boring recitation of information. Instead, the author weaves fascinating stories, bringing the ceremonies to life through the eyes of fictional participants!

Overall, I found this to be a warmhearted and fascinating look at these people, really bringing their lives and ceremonies right to me. The Amish wedding chapter was great, and I found the Old Order Mennonite baptism to be especially touching. If you are interested in the Amish and other Old Order groups, then I cannot recommend this book to you enough. Get it!

Unbelievably Satisfying

Review Date: 2008-07-01
I would first like to preface my review by stating that I am a psychology (with an emphasis in Neuroscience courses) undergrad who bought the book to gauge how well I would understand the material, understanding the likelihood--despite having read around 15 neuroscience books the past two years--that much of it may be beyond my understanding. With that said, I must say I have not read a book that reduces the language to that which I can understand entirely--all the while refusing to oversimplify or reduce substance--as much as this one. Admittedly, this review cannot be authoritative, as I am just a student, but I am in utter amazement at how eloquent and precise the book is without engaging in pedantry over minutiae.

Prior to this book, I could confess to being slightly confused and accepting of the subjective quality of what constitutes a limbic system. Prior to this book, I could confess to being confused by the Nucleus Accumbens, Caudate, and Putamen, and why they differ. Prior to this book, I could confess to being befuddled over what constitutes the extended amygdala (I still think this could be called the striatal amygdala to reduce confusion, as it keeps the striatal part as simply descriptive), and what areas are part of the limbic 'system' or lobe as the authors and Broca declare.

The book put into context clinical disorders like Parkinson's, and how its progression as a disease reflected the afferents accepted by the dorsal and ventral striatum. It put into context addiction, highlighted with sheer brilliance the core-shell dichotomy and work showing the importance of certain 'islands' in the striatum as possibly (even if only metaphorically) relative to arrested development and drug abuse.

I cannot, in words, express my satisfaction with this book enough. Recommended for all those interested in the brain who have read enough to know basic anatomy of the brain.

As a fortunate participant in one of the symposia that engendered this textbook, I congratulate the co-authors on compiling a text worthy of Dr. Heimer's legacy. The previous reviewer summarized nicely the highlights of the text, but did not mention how truly unique and special the attached DVD of Dr. Heimer's dissections is as a supplement. Dr. Heimer was a master at teaching the beauty of neuroanatomy and these videos are a lasting tribute to that capacity. Well done.

A Paradigm Shift in Psychiatry

The "Anatomy of Neuropsychiatry: The New Anatomy of the Basal Forebrain and its implications for Neuropsychiatric illness" by Lennart Heimer, Gary W. Van Hoesen, Michael Trimble and Daniel S. Zahn," is lucid, accurate, concise (176 pages) and up to date (2008) book on the new paradigm shift in psychiatric thought from a "neuroanatomic perspective." The basal forebrain is a manifold that envelopes the telencephalic structures that include the septum, accumbens, substantia innominata, amygdala, and the orbitofrontal and temporal cortical regions. The main parts of the substantia innominata are the cholinergic and non-cholinergic neurons referred to as the magnocellular basal forebrain complex which includes the basal nucleus of Meynert.
These structures and their "parallel, segregated subcortical connections," form several "functional-anatomical systems," referred to as "macrosytems." Each macrosystem is in parallel with each other. These make up the neural basis for the behavioral repertoire involved in the overall "risk-benefit analysis" with its intrinsic directive to keep you alive. Memory, feelings, emotional expression, and thinking from the limbic and extrapyramidal now to the basal forebrain and it's "risk-benefit analysis." The authors show the designations "psychiatric-neurologic," and/or neuropsychiatric-behavioral neurology," are different sides of the same coin. There is an excellent review of Nieuwenhuys expansion of the limbic system into the brainstem first researched by Nauta. Despite the new anatomical discoveries, the continuing evolution and "eroding relevance of the Limbic System," and the conceptualizing of the Basal Forebrain Functional-Anatomical Systems, the core remains the Papez Circuit.
