Part 4 in the Scott Pilgrim series lives up the the standards set by the previous three volumes. I won't go into detail describing the plot, as that as been documented pretty well. I will say this is a fun, entertaining read. Every time I pick up the newest volume, I re-read all the previous episodes and enjoy them as much as the first time I read them. A highly-recommended series. Can't wait for the next issue.

after waiting for over than a year, the new scott pilgrim book pays off already at the first few pages (which are actually in color- another manga detail). without spoiling the plot, it can only be said that it's somewhat darker than the previous books, but it's still flawless in its pacing and storytelling. the probable reason for such a long delay between books is most likely because of the art- much more thought out and refined now. sometimes it works against the book (seeming a bit too clean and missing the raw power of the first book), but most of the time it's just a beautiful book.

in any case, still one of the best books on the market, strongly recommended for you and everyone you know (i bought four).

The first three Scott Pilgrim books have shown that he is immature, thoughtless and sometimes mean. Sure, he's charming and funny, but is that enough to balance out his laziness, selfishness and ignorance? That depends on the reader.

Deep thought aside, this book is hilarious and as fun as it's predecessors. Mixing comic books, kung-fu movies, music videos, and especially video games, it truly makes them into a pure fun mixture.

In this one, Scott fights another of Ramona's evil exes. Not an evil ex-boyfriend, though. to find out what that means, you'll have to read it!

Buy all the Scott Pilgrim books out one through this one: four, when they get to you house call in sick and read them cover to cover. When your done you'll want to move to Canada, or into a video game.

They will brighten up you whole year.

I found Sedona Storm to be intoxicating!! I was able to see the demons and angels by the indepth descriptions. I felt I knew Christine . Her doubts and questions about the occults and christianity. I think Carrie Younce did a terrific job of equally describing the realm of good verses evil!! Truly an entertaining book. Get passed the names. They are so difficult to pronounce

This is the best Christian book, of its genre, that I have ever read and I have a library of them. It was a definite page turner. But it is not one for the faint-hearted. This is a book for a strong Christian, even so, it will have you praying hard before you shut your eyes at night. It is so insightful and the way that Scott and Younce give the spiritual and physical world a look, it opens your eyes to what the world might actually be like. I have this book so worn from use that I might have to go out and replace it. Then I can give my copy back to my mother, who lent it to me years ago. If you are into suspense, action, romance, and psychological thrilling, this is THE BOOK for you

Needed a little more content ...

A modest book with some good insights on the spiritual symbolism of food and nourishing oneself at the hearth of one's home. It's a great subject that has not been adequately explored (either in this book or in others). Most books of this type explore either the general mind-body connection or accessing one's creativity, but don't focus specifically on food. I liked what I got from this book, especially insights about the goddess Hestia. But there wasn't enough real life examples from the author's actual practice. What exactly is a nutritional counselor? I wanted case studies and solutions. Instead, I got idyllic stories about her and her husband and her adorable little girls enjoying their country home. Not as much content as I would have liked.

There aren't enough good things to say about this book. The premise is that in losing the 'hearth' in a home, the whole family and whole culture suffers. Cooking is a sacred act and it nourishes so very much more than nutritional needs in a family. This is a global truth as the writer explores in chapters about Buddhists, ancient Goddesses, and modern families.

Fire Goddesses, Hearth, Home, Healing

Review Date: 2002-12-17
This book is a little bit hard to describe. I like its analogy of the hearth as a foundation of our lives, and the connection of the hearth to fire Goddesses, to home, to cooking, to our relationship with food, to the center (or lack of it) of our homes, and to our own "centers." The lack of hearths in our lives is described in a way that helps the reader understand the significance of that lack. And unlike many other books that just describe a problem, this book offers solutions.

The book contains much information about fire Goddesses, but not in the usual sense of merely presenting their story, their mythology. It has the history of their contribution to the world, and it's full of the author's reflections on how those Goddesses and the lack of their presence in society today affect us negatively. But again, there are solutions. There are also many, many experiential exercises and short meditations in the book to help us get in touch with various aspects of ourselves that may be hindering our ability to connect with aspects of these Goddesses and with ourselves. The exercises/meditations are important because, as the author says, "These archetypes hold tremendous power, and yet our understanding of them remains an intellectual exercise unless we experience their meaning in our daily lives. How do we bridge the distance that separates intellect from inner experience? First, we must consider our individual feelings in relationship to these Goddesses. These feelings lead us to meaning, and gradually the power of these archetypes becomes our own."

She writes about how the Goddess Pele helps us learn to see ourselves through "the eye of the heart," a watcher of sorts who is within us, who lesson is kindness to self. Again taking this lesson back to the hearth, she writes: "As we grow accustomed to this process of inner watching, we gradually awaken to ways in which be block our own nourishment."

The author talks about Chinese medicine and healing as well as from other cultures. And she talks about seasons, and how to intelligently adjust our eating to the seasons. But mostly she talks about who we are, and how we get that way and how food and hearth and home and love and the Goddesses who embody these things can help us. It's just a great all-around book for anyone into self-growth, parenting/nurturing, home life, raising children, learning about Paganism...I could go on and on. Get the book.

Rhythms and Rituals of the Hearth

The title of this review appears on the book's cover; I couldn't think of a better one. While the themes Anne Scott covers --nutrition, goddesses, ancient practices such as Chinese medicine and the spiritual meaning of the seasons-- have become quite popular recently, this book has a unique voice. It is relatively short and compact and each page is filled with a quietly intense wisdom. The unifying theme is the hearth; that too often overlooked (in modern times) place of physical or spiritual fire that provides us with nourishment. Anne Scott explores this from many traditions. She focuses on several fire goddesses -- Hestia (Greek), Pele (Hawaiian), Brighde (Irish) and Gabija (Lithuanian), relates conversations with various teachers and healers and describes how the seasons correspond to the elements of Chinese medicine. Throughout the book are personal anecdotes that relate to the subject; indeed, the book seems to come primarily from her experience and life lessons. There is also some good advice on eating appropriately for the seasons, talking to children about food and eating more consciously. Like many spiritually-focused books, this one encourages us to slow down, pay more attention to our surroundings and appreciate the abundance of nature. This one accomplishes something rare; it is itself an expression of the kind of simplicity and awareness it advocates.

The story along with the images! Grate. Most of the books of its king feature only the plates with a brief description and the reader has to know the story to really understand and feel the image. Colour reproduction is not the best possible though. I have seen on the web the same images looking brighter and better. All in all it is a good book to have.

I'm an avid collector of all books to do with fairies. This will take its place as a favorite among all my books. The play is magical, and the mix of genius -- Shakespeare's words and Rackham's imagery -- transported me to another world. There's nothing like it!!! As a fairy photographer/artist http://www.faeriechronicles.com/chronicles/antonia/index.htm I'm passionate about this genre and have have seen many of Rackham's illustrations before. It is really great to see them here with the story. There are the color copies from the plates, but also a plethora of elegant and whimsical pen and ink fairy drawings that introduce the chapters and decorate the pages that I'd never seen. Oh for joy. The pages appear to be copied from the original book (as if duplicated by scanning the original 1908 pages, but cleaned up to look new and enlarged), and they did a great job. The quality of the color reproductions is very good, especially for a paperback in this price range. I would love to have this in a hardback -- the publishers would do well to create an even fancier edition of this hearthrob -- the same size but with a more vintage-look and feel. The soft paperback tends to splay in my hands in its large format. This is a keeper and one that I'd like to last for years. Go check out the reviews on other publications of this play by itself without the illustrations -- you will find an audience that has been spellbound.

I also found a university site with the original book binding and almost all the images in the book scanned -- these are fabulous references:
http://www.special-coll.bham.ac.uk/Blueprint/feature_dream.htm

This is one of those books for which I'd enjoy having the first edition. The original had around 40 bookplates. My websearch found only a subsequent edition (with 16 plates) for $200! Nery a copy of the original 1908 version was to be found. I wonder what THAT would go for!? Please let me know if you find one for a reasonable amount, which I doubt would happen. -- Antonia

It was a delight to read and reference this work for details into Shakespeare's inner voice and language. How did he form the words that have so emotional impact? Scott Kaiser provides a master key in the usage itself and how the sounds and symbols of words sharpened the ear to be pierce through with richer meaning. I've been looking for something like this for years, and I'm glad someone finally wrote it. Fantastic book for playwrights, screenwriters, and writers of all kinds to add new dimensions to their own stories.

Nine basic patterns of Shakespeare's language are revealed for students of both English and drama, offering a survey of how Shakespeare used words, phrases, expressions and images to solidify his ideas and plays. WORDCRAFT could have been recommended in our Literary Shelf area but is featured here for its broader applications to drama students at the high school, college and public performance levels alike: this audience will especially appreciate Shakespeare authority Scott Kaiser's revelations.

engaging lessons on the craft of writing from Shakespeare's plays
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2007-09-10
Kaiser has the entertaining idea of using brief quotes from Shakespeare--hundreds and hundreds of quotes--to impart lessons for effective, occasionally memorable writing, mostly word usage and sentence structure. Thus one is treated to numerous Shakespearean quotes as examples of notable word usage and fundamental writing techniques identified by Kaiser. He names these words, additions, repetitions, reverberations, transformations, substitutions, omissions, order, and disorder. Within each of the nine chapters are several subsections for different aspects of the technique. Delayed Repetitions and Landings are two of the eight aspects under Reverberations. "Shame, and eternal shame, nothing but shame" from "Hamlet" is one example of the former. "Dost thou teach pardon, pardon to destroy?" is an example from "King Richard the Second" of Landings, explained as "[t]he last word or words of a phrase repeated as the beginning of the next phrase." The unique writer's handbook can be studied systematically or be a bedside companion to dip into randomly for enjoyment and instruction.

I found this book to be a very readable, informative account of the development and testing of the Skystreak, Skyrocket, and Stiletto. I appreciated the extent to which the author sought out and included drawings of the subjects, especially the internal arrangements and cutaways. I would have liked to have seen some detailed multi-view drawings of the subjects, but realize that may not be possible these days in a book that is as reasonably priced as this.

I came across this book at the library and got it to use for my husband, who is in recovery. It is more than a cookbook, it is a recovery resource! The nutritional information, and easy-to-read descriptions of recipes and ingredients - mushrooms, olives, and lettuces, for example - are useful for anyone wanting to be a better cook. Like the other reviewer, I made the pork tenderloin with cumin (although I'd forgotten to get apples and used onions instead!), and with a couple of sides, my husband thought it one of the best meals I'd ever made! I came to Amazon to buy the book so I won't have to keep checking it out at the library - I don't want to be without it.

A Tremendous Service

Review Date: 2003-10-09
Liz Scott has done a tremendous service to those recovering from substance abuse and others who choose to cook without alcohol

Cookbooks and magazines typically give scant attention, if any, to the needs of those who forgo alcohol in cooking. Stock or water is often recommended as a substitute, despite lacking whatever flavor the wine, beer, or sherry called for in the recipe would contribute, and the results are what you'd expect: flat, dull, or off-putting.

Scott's approach to substitution is more nuanced. By considering the flavors the alcohol would contribute and the role it plays in the dish, she arrives at substitutes that truly work. Where wine plays a supporting role, as in a pan sauce, for instance, she recreates its fruitiness and acidity with a mixture of unsweetened grape juice and wine vinegar. Where the alcohol stars, she reworks the recipe entirely, like the boeuf bourguignon where she uses currant jelly to give depth of flavor and body to the sauce.

I bought the book for the discussion of substitution after I heard Scott interviewed on the radio, but I've found that it offers much more. She provides extensive information on nutrition and practical suggestions on eating better, both in early recovery and over the long haul, by eating more fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, and, without faddishness, by starting to pay attention to food's glycemic index. I was inspired to try roasted soybeans for the first time in a "road to recovery" trail mix with chocolate chips that I liked very much.

The other recipes I've tried--iced herbal tea, granola; a leek and potato soup; pan-fried steak; a roasted pork tenderloin with cumin and apples that took only ten minutes of prep--have been uniformly good: clearly written, easy to prepare, and great-tasting.

The book is structured according to stages of early, established, and long-term recovery, and it allows Scott to be supportive and even gentle-having that ice cream probably won't kill you-while aspiring to continuous improvement. For those in AA, her recommendations about triggers, cravings, HALT, fellowship, and other concepts are mainstream program. Although stricter than some might feel necessary-she tossed out her corkscrew and won't use alcohol-based vanilla extract-her suggestions will help keep you safe.

I recommend the book highly for anyone in recovery who likes to cook, or for that matter, is just interested in taking better care of oneself.

I was recently involved in organizing a recovery walk in Kirkland, Washington and had the pleasure of meeting Liz Scott and purchasing her book Sober Celebrations and Sober Kitchen. She is an amazing chef and an amazing women in recovery who believes that those that don't need or want alcohol in their lives should not have to give up the joy of food, cooking and entertaining. Because there were no other books of this type available when she was early in recovery, she did a lot of research on how to substitute out alcohol in her cooking and catering business without losing the flavor and fun. AS someone who is not in recovery herself, but has a medical condition that makes alcohol use detrimental to her health, I was thrilled to find a cookbook that I could use myself.
For anyone who is in recovery, doesn't drink alcohol, or is restricted diet wise, not only are these great recipes but the books are filled with great side bars and information that really helps me to understand the role of alcohol in foods, preparation, entertaining, etc. I couldn't recommend this book any higher. The same for Sober Kitchen. They are both must haves' Thanks LIz for your fondness of food and concern for those of us who love to eat and cook but felt like we had to give up so many dishes because of the alcohol. You are as much a chemist as a chef!

Liz Scott was a professional chef when she stopped drinking. She worried how she could continue to work when her relationship with alcohol had changed so drastically. She found a way to continue cooking professionally without using alcohol OR sacrificing gourmet excellence or exquisite taste. I found Liz Scott's "The Sober Kitchen" when looking for a gift for a sober friend. I ended up buying a copy for myself after reading the great recipes and the sober self-care explanations that are so sensible, whether one is in recovery or just living life on its own terms, no easy feat today. I have drawn upon Ms. Scott's wisdom in my daily work with recovering men and women and have recommended her book to many people. I commend Ms. Scott for sharing her own story in the hope that others will be helped. Her "be-good-to-yourself, you've-been-through-a-lot" attitude towards preparing and enjoying food could benefit virtually anyone, not just the newly sober. Check it out!

The "Star Trek SCE" series is written about the "Starfleet Corps of Engineers", which are the topnotch engineers sent in to solve puzzles that have stumped the engineers on an individual ship. It's an interesting idea, very much more traditional science fiction rather than the space opera that is commonly seen in most "science fiction" these days; more attention is paid to the science, without sacrificing plot or character developement.

On the down side, I wasn't quite as taken with the stories in this book as I was with those in the first two entries in the series; on the up side, while book one ended on a cliffhanger and book two therefore started in midstory, this book did not resort to such cheap methods of keeping us interested; it began and ended as a self-contained set of stories.

I Continue To Gush.

I believe I've said this already, but I think this S.C.E. idea was about the best ever (you GO, DeCandido!), and this next batch was no exception to that idea. Waiting for the paperbacks puts me woefully behind the eBooks, this I know, but my patience has been consistently rewarded with each new publication.

In Book Three, we get eBook stories 9-12, and each one is a separate little thrill ride into the S.C.E. universe. And I guess what I'm most impressed with is the continuity of character development and growth throughout each author's writing. That can't be an easy task, especially when the authors are also charged with writing a compelling plot.

If you're like me and don't really care for the eBook format, but are interested in learning about the Starfleet team that goes in to clean up the messes, I *highly* recommend these books. Fast-paced but complex, with great character development and depth.

Good job, I say! Don't stop!

I originally read all the S. C. E. novellas in eBook form. But I pick up the paperback print compilations as an excuse to re-read them! S. C. E. is probably the best Star Trek series and these 4 stories are excellent, building up the crew and giving them character. At about this point in the series, you really start to care about the characters. I heartily reccomend this book and the entire S. C. E. series to anyone who's look for a well-written series that is a new twist on Star Trek.

Star Trek-Starfleet Corps of Engineers Book #3: Some Assembly Required is an anthology of four stort stories involving the the corps of engineers first appearing as ebooks and now is in printed form.

"Some Assembly Required" contains:

"The Riddled Post" written by Aaron Rosenberg
"Here, There be Monsters" written by Keith R.A. Decandido
"Ambush" written by Dave Galanter and Greg Brodeur
"Some Assembly Required" written by Scott Ciencin and Dave Jolley

In this book the stories contain high-tech action-adventure and it will keep your attention. The stories are written as short stories and they are written as building on one another. As the stories building to an exciting climax and they have some very clever solutions.

I liked the way the stories are written and the way plot is laid out and the action moves quickly... but the character development is not lacking and it gives the reader a sense of being within the confines of the story... like your in the middle of all of the action.

As each story is written as a complete stand alone story, there are references in each to past adventures making for intresting reading. You'll be engrossed in the story and wanting the characters to succed in each adventure.

This anthology covers story #9 through #12 of the ebook series and the corps of engineers work at solving problems. This is a fresh addition to the Star Trek series and you'll be fascinated as a group of giant monsters fall through an interdimensional gateway, the engineers work on a planetary computer system, solve a mystery of an outpost riddled by a strange new weapon, and defeat a foe who has the corps outgunned in an exciting space battle.

Have tech, will travel is the corps motto and Starfleet's miracle worker will take you on a journey you will not soon forget.

A book that excites the eye and opens the mind

Scott's photographs are exquisite and beautifully married to simple but sophisticated text by her co-author, Reid. In an era of "Chicken Soup for the Soul (which I also occasionally read and find helpful), The Soul in Balance is a visual delight and a book whose messages are challenging, thought-provoking, and soothing. This book would make a perfect gift for almost anyone whose life is too hectic, fragmented, and in need of some inner direction. Scott's understanding and appreciation of the natural world are reflective and direct descendants of the best 18th century traditions. But no mistake, she is a complete, late-20th century sensibility with an remarkable eye and camera technique that excels.

I had been in hospitals for 12 months when I read Alexandra Scott's book. It was so peaceful and beautiful, while the text and pictures enhanced one another. For people in distress with little energy, it is balm for the self.

This is such a soothing, satisfying book. The photographs are exquisite, with a wonderful sense of intimacy and color: red berries glistening in droplets of ice, poppies with the fine blonde hairs along their stems backlit in the sun. Scott's sensitive, observant eye takes you places you wouldn't know to go, pulling your eye deep into a hydrangea, where tiny growing leaves curl into infinity. There is a real synergy between the photos and the thoughtful quotes, to a degree that I have never seen. Reid is a poet and you can tell; when you read the quote and look back at the picture, you understand it in a different way. I've been giving copies to everyone I know.

Lovely, inspiring images both visual and philosophical

The Soul In Balance: The Gardens Of Washington National Cathedral pairs photographs with short quotations from Biblical, Philosophical, and literary works thereby creating lovely, inspiring images both visual and philosophical. Alexandra K. Scott's color photographs pair beautifully with quotations selected by Heddy F. Reid and New Testament passages chosen by Frederica Isabelle Scott. The Soul In Balance is an ideal gift book to commemorate special occasions, and to browse through in search of heart's ease and the spirit's inspiration.

This is one of the best-designed books I've used. The notes, tips, and cautions are plentiful, which really helped to enhance the topics. There is also a quick reference to special features called Power tips. A large tear out section of keyboard commands is included in the front. I had no idea there were so many shortcuts.

I found the illustration techniques uniques and extremely helpful. The tables not only show the function of a tool but where to find more information if needed. The whole book has cross references to other sections, great help.

If you are looking for one book on CorelDRAW 9, you can't go wrong with this one, it is excellent!

A Superb Guide for Beginners and Experts Alike.

Steve Bain's book on CorelDRAW ranks among the best books I've read on any technical subject. The organization is excellent; essential tools are named and described in the first few chapters, and then explored in detail later along with the remaining tools and functions. The author's command of English is wonderful; the book is clear, concise, coherent, thorough, and readable. I have been concurrently reading through this book while I use CorelDRAW at work, and am enlightened at every turn of the page. The desire to praise this book (& author: thanks!) inspired me to write my first review for Amazon.

This book far out-ranks all other books on CorelDRAW 9 !

This is the only book I have found that includes a working evaluation copy of CorelDRAW 9. It includes dozens of hands-on step-by-step workshops with the CorelDRAW files to support them. It is virtually the only book to explain *all* of Draw's complex drawing features in easy-to-understand language. It is over 1,000 packed and well-illustrated pages in length containing hundreds of time-saving user tips. Each chapter ends with indispensable troubleshooting tips geared toward solving dozens of common user problems. Most of the information covered applies to previous versions of Draw, at least two versions back. You won't be disappointed with this one, it's a lifesaver !

Helped me understand some complicated concepts

I recently bought CorelDRAW 9 together with Steve Bain's book titled "Special Edition" Using CorelDraw 9. I am finding the book *very* useful in helping me to better understand the complexities of CorelDRAW 9.
