Terrific ADVANCED book

This book is not for the faint of heart in Access 2000 coding but it is invaluable to the advanced programmer. I refer to this book almost daily in developing our in-house applications. The real strength of this book is in developing code that is more portable or reusable. I have gone from writing sloppy code that is application (or even form) specific to writing completly reusable (and of course fully documented) code. Excellent reference for the power VBA programmer!

Had everything I needed to get going, even the obscure stuff.

Only thing missing was an explanation of what Access does with it's version of Stored procedures, but then again, Microsoft isn't sure on that one itself, so that's no surprise.

Great book, I recommend it.

Love this book. This is the only book I know that does not abandon DAO. I like DAO. All other post Access 97 book abandons DAO.

It is well written and have used many of this examples for my job. I even like it better than the Getz books.

I BOUGHT NOT LESS THAN 15 MS ACCESS BOOKS WHILE LEARNING ACCESS. I FOUND THIS ONE MOST HELPFUL. I HAVE LEARNED MANY THINGS FROM THIS VALUABLE BOOK: CLASS MODULES, CUSTOM COLLECTIONS, CUSTOM PROPERTIES & METHODS, API CALLS ETC ETC... THE AUTHOR HAD PROVIDED MANY USEFUL CODES. I REALLY LIKE HIS BOOKMARK TRACKER.

This was just the book I was looking for. Scott goes into alot of the issues that most of the books on Access just do not. For instance his sections on the winAPI's as well as performance recomendations. I found this book a total reference for beginner through the intermediate programmer of Access. Thanks Scott.

Dry reading on a necessary topic

Review Date: 2008-10-31
This book, put together by a panel is mighty dry reading - kinda like unbuttered popcorn. Alas, that's a common problem with a report or study put together by a committee, no evidence that any of the panelists has a flair for writing. As with the other reviewers to date, I feel the book provides much needed help on the issue of one's faith on facing and addressing death; especially death under trying circumstances--life support, hospice care. I'd have found it helpful if there'd been some discussion on coping with the death of youth or young children (grief issues are especially critical) and the matter of a child dying before elderly parents, again an especially hard grief issue and test of faith.

An Episcopal Church task group writes a book worth reading.

When confronted by potentially controversial ethical issues, such as those surrounding death and dying, churches rarely distinguish themselves. There are a number of pitfalls. Knowing that they cannot please anyone, they may simply remain silent, abdicating their responsibility to provide moral guidance. Worse, they may make pious-sounding, but vague, pronouncemnts that address issues without actually saying anything. When take clear positions, they may have a hard time making a convincing connection to their own tradition. This work avoids all those pitfalls. The Episcopal Church's End of Life Task Force addresses issues such as assisted suicide clearly and concisely even as they respect the human anguish and moral ambiguities involved.

This book was excellent. It gives a great insight into the beliefs of the Anglican Faith regarding the End of Life Care, and what we, as Anglicans, can do. I knew before I read the book, that the Church allowed us to forgo Life Support Measures, and Extraordinary measures including refusing artificial Nutrition and Hydration.

This book is a great resourch for any member of the Anglican Faith (Episcopal of Church of England, or member of the Anglican Community).

This is a really useful book for those who are approaching death and those who are critically ill and don't know what the outcome will be. I'm not Episcopalian, but felt really supported in terms of ethical and spiritual help when my father was dying and I read it.

A Useful Resource

Review Date: 2000-07-26
Although specifically Anglican in perspective, the early chapters offer an understanding of death and its place in human life--including theologically appropriate uses of medical treatment/resources--that will be of value to all Christians (and others interested in what religious traditions have to say). After discussions of mourning, the church's role, and social policy issues like access to health care and the importance of palliative care, the book provides several very helpful resources for use in local parishes. This book by a distinguished panel of clergy, ethicists, physicians, and attorneys (not to imply that any of those categories excludes any of the others!) can serve as a useful resource for all who want to make the end of life a more faithful experience, both for themselves and for others.

There are two parts to this. An appropriate adjective for a whole bunch of super-simians? If you are the superhero on the end of an assault on a metahuman prison by a bunch of parachuting supergorillas, then the correct adjective is likely 'faecalload'.

In the second part of the trade, things get even worse, as the new Zoom turns up, wanting to make Wally a better hero. This usually involves violence and death and trying to outdo the Flash in speed. Not good.

I've been a huge fan of The Flash since I was a kid. Geoff Johns writing of the Flash and his entire universe has been nothing short of spectacular. With BLITZ Johns manages to outdo himself!

This is a solid 8 issue printing of a storyline that sees one of Wally West's colleagues become a new version of one of the Flash's oldest villains...PROFESSOR ZOOM. The story is told with solid pacing, dialogue, plotting, and action. Johns writes characters that we want to care about and that we can sympathize with (even when we don't agree with their actions). In some of his earlier Flash TPB's there were a few too many asides for all the supporting cast. This time out Johns keeps it simple with Wally West and Zoom.

It's an exciting fast-paced read!

This is has got to be the best Flash story ever written!!! Geoff Johns knew what he was doing when he wrote this storyline. Under his guidance, "Blitz" would become one of the most important and historical storyline's ever for the Flash and is praised by many comic fans still to this day. And even if your new to the Flash and his history, then this is also the book for you since you basically get the history of Wally West (the current Flash), his wife Linda Park, Jay Garrick (the first Flash), and most of the Rogues to. We're also for the first time introduced to the Flash's arch-enemy and the most deadliest rogue of all: Zoom (literally "the Reserve Flash".) And there's even a guest appearance by two older character's all the fans will love.

Overall, if you are a Flash fan then is a MUST HAVE! Buy it as soon as you can! I recommend it more then even "The Flash Archives."

This is one of the grittiest Flash stories ever. It is filled with suspense, stunning violence and fabulous artwork. Without giving anything away. It is a tale of vengence, betrayal and tragedy, and should be on every comic book readers must read list. This isn't your father's Flash kids, and it firmly plants the character in the modern world where people die and tragedy haunts every hero's life. For maximum effect, it must be read in one sitting.

Geoff Johns and Scott Kolins go all out in their revival of my personal favorite Flash rouge Zoom, the reverse Flash.
If you've read previous volumes in the John?kolins run, you will see the threads they placed be pulled together in what has to be one of the best modern origins of a villian in sometime. But even if you've not read the previous stories, through Johns's deft storytelling ability, you can pick up this volume and not feel overwhelmed, or that you are missing too much of what came before.
This sory is intense and with out giving it away, the resurrection of Zoom will have lasting effects on the Flash and the people in his life from here on out.
I cannot recommend this title highly enough. Read up and good times will follow!!

This is a fun read where the author has woven a tapestry of history, myth, religion, and archeology into a compelling story with plenty of romance and action. Drawing on the myths and cultures of three continents, the author presents an interesting alternative history that describes a line from Ancient Troy, to China, and finally to the New World. Although the novel contains a wealth of historical and archeological information, the story is an enjoyable and easy read. I look forward to reading more about the lovely Snow Pine's future in the Americas as well as Daniel's continued struggle to walk the line between the cold facts of academia and the speculations of a creative mind.

I bought this as a favor to a friend, I finished it the first day I started. I was captivated by Sun Kai and Snow Pine. There was enough drama to keep you hooked and the historical references were fantastic. I loved the way all the cultures were woven together. I found myself cheering for the heroes and saddened when they had difficulties. I would reccomend this to anyone who has ever enjoyed an alternate history novel, but you will really enjoy the historical tie in's as well.

Touching base with Greek, Chinese, and Native American traditions, Flight of the Piasa seamlessly combines historical facts with believable fiction to create a timeless love story. The protagonist, Sun Kai, struggles to unite with the love of his life, Snow Pine, through the creation of an Empire, the horrors of war, the building of the Great Wall of China, and, finally, the crossing to a new world. Tragic, uplifting, suspenseful, fascinating - Flight of the Piasa is a page turner from beginning to end.

First let me say that I'm a sucker for all types of adventure stories and that the adventures contained in the Flight of the Piasa Bird are fun and hard to resist. The writer has a love and good understanding of the history of ancient China , circa 200BCE. The details about historical China , Chinese medicine, and culture are a real plus for the reader. After a voyage that takes the reader to four continents, the Flight of the Piasa lands in North America . It is an interesting, and entertaining read. I especially liked the quirky ending that leaves open the question, is this fiction or history?

Flight of the Piasa is a great historical fiction that took me back to ancient China during the time of the Emperor who created the Terra Cotta Warriors and the Great Wall. The book proposes an interesting origin to "America's best road-side attraction", better known as the Piasa. I bought the book because I have seen the Piasa several times while driving along the Mississippi river near Alton Illinois. I recommend the book. It's a broad, fun, adventure with an interesting twist on history, and leaves you wondering; is this fact or fiction?

I spent a year hiking and exploring the entire state of Washington for this trail guide. I hiked many of the trails, visited the trail heads, and talked to many local rangers and hikers. I made sure to include the best, most accurate information to help you pick a hike and hit the trail, from short day hikes to week long backpacking trips.

I believe a variety of hikers will find this guide helpful, whether you are looking for new hike ideas, enjoy exploring new areas of the state, or need information on that out-of-the-way trail you've been meaning to hike. And I think backpackers will find this guide indispensable.

Cheers, Scott

It's indispensable in helping you choose what to hike, what to bring, what to leave at home, and what to expect when you get there (especially the little annoying hidden things, like parking fees). Seeing the maps of the hiking trails helped me a lot too. I hope you get this book before you go hiking because you might regret it if you don't.

Drift - superb insight

Good case study which introduces the powerful concept of organisational drift. When operations start too often rules are too complex and too restrictive. So operators find work-arounds an informal alternatives. These work until one day circumstances mean that the gaps created allow an accident to occur. Then guess what? - the rules are tightened and the cyle resumes. This is vital reading for any quality and/or safety manager.

When bad things happen to good organizations

Review Date: 2000-04-13
In this book, Scott A. Snook, Ph.D. provides a thoughtful and readable account of how things can go tragically wrong in normal, healthy organizations. The author creatively applies several key theories in organizational structure and change to develop an understanding of (1) the tragic shootdown of two Army helicopters by U.S. Air Force jet fighters, which occurred in northern Iraq in 1994, and (2) "friendly-fire" events in general and broadly-defined --- or how it is that bad things can happen to good organizations, and there really is no one to blame. The book begins with an impressive, detailed examination of the data surrounding the 1994 Blackhawk shootdown. This includes thousands of hours of transcribed testimony gathered in hearings and court martial proceedings. In addition to official reports, Snook personally interviewed many of the key players in the Blackhawk friendly-fire incident. Using a "grounded-theory" approach, the author allows the data to shape and guide his reconstruction of the event itself, and his subsequent theoretical formulations to explain what happened. His resultant theory of "practical drift" spans multiple levels-of-analysis, from the individual to the cultural, providing dramatic insight into how such seemingly impossible events can be expected to occur in complex organizations. This book sheds the kind of light which both clarifies and disturbs. It should prove of real value not only to military leaders interested in reducing friendly-fire incidents, but also to leaders in non-military organizations who wish to understand, and perhaps avoid, normal disasters.

An Exceptional Account and Evaluation

Review Date: 2000-09-29
Friendly Fire is a marvelous analysis of one of the most horrific accidents in recent military history. Snook is unfaltering in his tenacity to get to the root causes of this tragedy. The reader is given a broad perspective of how events, even those occuring years previous, led to the fateful day when 26 peacekeepers lost their lives. His ability to put the reader into the mind of each participant is riveting. More than just a recitation of facts or an outpouring of emotion, this book blends all the elements into a comprehensive understanding of a most complicated event. Friendly Fire should be required reading for all military personnel and anyone whose actions hold the lives of others in their hands.

An Organizational Analysis

Review Date: 2000-12-14
Friendly Fire is a insightful, intriguing analysis of the 1994 incident that resulted in the needless deaths of 26 peacekeepers in the Iraqi Norther No Fly Zone. Snook presents a compelling tale of a complex system gone awry, an organization operating on the edge of chaos, and the ultimate result of a deterministic system spinning out of control. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of systems theory and organizational behavior, LTC Snook presents his thesis with exceptional clarity and depth of understanding; his conclusions are as disturbing as they are fascinating: a series of rational decisions made by equally rational human beings still failed to prevent the very incident the organization was designed to forestall. A concise, well-written account of and incident with lessons that we should all take to heart.

Early Modern Scotland. Stuart Misrule of England, Scotland and Ireland.
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-25
GIleskirk and Greyfriars in the title are the names of two houses of worship in Scotland's capital. They refer to the Cathedral Church of Edinburgh and to a suburban pre-Reformation Franciscan church. Gileskirk's pulpit is associated with the 16th Century leader of the Reformation, John Knox. At Greyfriars in 1638 the National Covenant was signed, a landmark in asserting church independence of royal control.

This second volume begins with the birth, life and execution of Queen Mary Stuart. It moves through the reigns of her son James and grandson Charles and their increasingly autorcratic misrule of Scotland, England and Ireland. The volume ends in 1658 with all powerful Lord Protector Oliver Cromwell, about to die. His brief rule did much violence to both Scotland and Ireland and trampled on old traditions. It abolished monarchy itself, bishops, the House of Lords and brought back the Jews after several hundred years and gave England its first and only written constitution.

Scott's TALES OF A GRANDFATHER should be read in parallel with his many historical novels and narrative poems. They bring Scotland and England to life as do few other books. -OOO-

Perhaps the best introduction to Scotland's history ever written
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-17
Walter Scott's History of Scotland written for his young grandson, with better editing and presentation, should be the perfect companion piece to many of Sir Walter's poems and novels. This Cumberland House 4-volume edition has large enough print and contains a helpful list of the Kings of Scotland and a good index. Lacking are much needed maps. Nonetheless, this is a truly great but simple introduction to the long history of Scotland in the "great man" genre of historical writing.

Fans of Mel Gibson's movie BRAVEHEART will be enchanted by the treatment of England's King Edward I, Longshanks -- corrupter of Robert the Bruce and conqueror in the end of Sir William Wallace. These and other great men and women as well as the Stuart Kings all strut across Walter Scott's well-lighted stage.

This first in a four volume edition covers the years 1033 - 1542. We see Scotland as a nation never conquered by Normans and intent on national independence but increasingly coveted and invaded by the Normanized English. We begin with MacBeth. We conclude with the struggle between England's Henry VIII and Scotland's James V, closing the Roman Catholic centuries of Scotland with the death of James just after the birth of his unhappy daughter Mary, "the Queen of Scots."

Let Chapter XVII, "Robert III" (1390 - 1406) serve as one of several examples of how determined readers of Walter Scott can easily and pleasantly flesh out the fiction of "the Wizard of the North." Readers of Scott's novel THE FAIR MAID OF PERTH will find here a brief but memorable description of events behind that bloody novel.

All in all, FROM BANNOCKBURN TO FLODDEN is a book well worth the time of anyone just beginning to read into the history of Scotland

How England Absorbed Scotland by creating the United Kingdom

Review Date: 2007-09-03
This this the third of four volumes written by Sir Walter Scott as a history of Scotland for children, very intelligent children be it said! It covers the years 1658 (death of Oliver Cromwell) to 1714 (death year of the last de facto Stuart Monarch, Queen Anne).

What sense is the obscure volume title, "FROM GLENCOE TO STIRLING" meant to evoke? No problem with GLENCOE: at that starkly beautiful MacDonalds' site in the western highlands, 38 men, women and children were massacred by Scottish troops in the dead of winter 1792. 150 more men, along with women and children succeeded in fleeing through the snow to shelter 12 miles away. The treacherous order to slaughter every man, woman and child below 70 years old was approved by King William III. Scotland to this day has not forgiven that otherwise enlightened monarch. Why Stirling appears in the title I am not sure.

Volume three of TALES OF A SCOTTISH GRANDFATHER is close to indispensable companion reading for six Walter Scott novels set in the years 1658 - 1714: WOODSTOCK, THE TALE OF OLD MORTALITY, PEVERIL OF THE PEAK, THE PIRATE, THE BRIDE OF LAMMERMOOR and THE BLACK DWARF. Some of these romances are more political than others, but the dynastic struggles form the backdrop for all.

The most biting part of Scott's narrative describes the formation of the United Kingdom in 1707. At a time when two actions of King William III (the massacre at Glencoe and his opposition to Scottish colonization of the Isthmus of Panama) had inflamed Scotland against England, English commercial interests were forced to decide between resumption of unending centuries of war with Scotland or assuring permanent peace by absorbing their smaller northern neighbor, more or less willingly. Which alternative would cost England less money? At a time when probably 95% of Scots were passionately against the Union, it was nonetheless negotiated in late 1706 and finally agreed to by the Scottish parliament. The United Kingdom opened shop in May 1707 -- on very unequal terms for Scotland. Bribes and payoffs to the Scottish negotiators and members of Parliament produced the needed votes.

According to Walter Scott, the very unfair terms of the treaty of union, combined with popular detestation of all those bribed to sell Scotland's ancient national independence, gave Scotland sixty more years of avoidable turmoil and humiliation. Then at last, with the coming of King George III, the Union began to give Scotland those commercial benefits that had been promised.

Meanwhile there was the Old Pretender's rising of 1707-08 and the political uncertainty who would succeed Queen Anne as she approached death in 1714. -OOO-

Although I am a Spanish speaking reader, I found this book most lovely and interesting from the first page. It is written in a clear style that makes it easy to understand and attractive to read. Writing History is a hard task, not suitable for everybody. Sir Walter Scott is certainly one of the greatest British poets and here he combines all his virtues in this matter with a great skill to narrate past events which almost turns this book into a "Romantic History" . It is wonderfuly adecquate for kids as it was originally intended even to those learning English as a second language.

My English Language Learners Loved This Book

Clear and attractive. I used this book to teach the process, but it struck me that it has other potential uses.

This book may be useful in combination with Johnny Appleseed and A Packet of Seeds. Although this picture book is considered young juvenile, it could be used with higher levels, and worked well with some of my older English language learner students.

The book ends with a "From seed to plant" project planting beans, which may be appropriate for integrating science and math curricular concepts. The book simplifies a hard to understand process and may help prompt some experiments about growing plants under different conditions.

The class could talk about the kinds of crops grown during a particular historical time period and US location. When discussing pioneer history, for example, the students could plant sweet potatoes, which sprout easily in water, to talk about food availability during that historical period. The book may work well with other books--such as the cooking books--when teaching about food and farming.

This is an excellent book for younger students (K-3) about seeds and plants. I am using it as part of my summer school reading/writing program. First, I read the book to the students and we planted little radish seeds (they grow quickly) in see-through plastic cups. Later, the students read the book out loud to one another and we discussed the seed to plant concept. They also kept a journal to record their observations of their seeds with illustrations about every other day. This book presents a great opportunity to combine reading, writing and science.

Superb, simple explanation of plant life.

This book's big, colorful illustrations and simple language do a superb job of explaining subjects such as plant reproduction, seed dispersal, pollen transference, and seed germination. Although intended for a younger audience, I read this book aloud to my fourth grade students to quickly build their background knowledge.

No review is really necessary. This book is *the* definitive reference for Galactic Dynamics.

You'll find it on the bookshelf of every astronomer alive (and I'm only marginally exaggerating here!). Five stars - there is no better Galactic Dynamics text.

Note, however, that this is *not* an introductory-level book, and is intended for graduate level astronomers and higher.

Binney has cleary established Galactic Dynamics and its companion volume Galactic Astronomy as the definitive works on the subject. The NASA Astronomy Abstract Service lists 3411 citations for this book as of 12/2006 so it is clearly an important part of the literature of astrophysics.

This book is written at the graduate or researcher level. As it deals with the behavior of galaxies, potential theory, energy distribution, angular momentium and dark matter so the mathematics employed are quite powerful.

This book is a very well-known and widely used reference for students in extragalactic astrophysics and stellar dynamics. A solution manual for the problems would be highly welcomed.

Not for the faint of heart. Well written, but very technical. Needs good math and physics background.

To the publisher I would appreciate it if the publisher could produce an audio adaptation of this book. I would love to listen to this while I drive to work and to let my 16 month old son listen to it as a bedtime story. Arnold D Veness

Wonderful story based on true life events! It has it all! Adventure, history, and a great love story. I enjoyed it very much and didn't want to see it end. Would love to see a sequel! Great job, Jerry. I am also proud to call you my lifelong friend.

I really enjoyed the book and would recommend it as a good read. The book was more meaningful to me because the author and some of the people he wrote about in the book are known to me. I can verify that the accounts of which I am acquainted in the book are true.

I commend the author for spinning a great story from true-life events and also for writing something that everyone can read. I am so proud to know him and call him a friend!

I recently read the novel "Glass Mountain" and was facinated with the police story in a way I have not experienced before. If cops really are as they have been depicted in the novel, then we are blessed to have men like this protecting us. With every page I experienced a new emotion and actually recognized people and places that really do exist. It became very personal. The Author did a terrific job in writing. His description of events was brilliant, and it made me feel like I was there. It held my interest so that I couldnt wait to read the next page. I bought five more books for my Son and Grandsons so they would know how a man experiences hardships, emotion, and real love for his friends, women and family.

I expected a police adventure novel with a hope for good entertainment. Instead I got a story that went straight to my heart. Who is this author? It is obvious he was a policeman. It is a wonder to me that he not only had authentic police expisodes in his moving novel, but brought in horses, cattle ranching and the Paiute Indian people, who end up being the heros of this wonderfully written story. I didn't want it to end and I felt a strong compassion for the men who swore to the code of law enforcement. The love story was clean and powerful. What a joy this story brought to my heart. I recommend it to anyone who wants adventure that will not let you put the book down and the kind of love story we wish we all could experience.

An interesting and compelling police story.

This book is an interesting novel about the lives of Police Officers with graphic detail and enough romance to keep the story interesting The author has captured a rare glimpse of the day to day encounters of veteran and rookie police officers, by describing in detail unusual but realistic events. A rare twist of humanity; just when you think you have seen everything, something else happens. A book written with graphic detail, but is still reasonable and in good taste. I would recommend this book to those thinking about a career in law enforcement, someone who would like to learn what it's like to be a law enforcement officer, or someone who would like to be entertained. Well done!
