Scott was a compatriot of mine in the California school system, and I learned first hand what a meticutlous researcher, and to-the-point writer, he is. Buy this book. It is a gold mine of information and very well written (and I can say this because I am his "English" buddy from WMS).

Scott did a very good job bringing out the Americans whom we would normally not know anywhere else. The characters, history and places kept me on this one. A fun and interesting book I am glad to share.

Mr Baron presents facts on hundreds of famous Americans in a fast paced and enjoyable manner. He puts each veterans service within a historical context, and the pictures alone are worth the price of admission.

If there is a criticism, it is that the book goes too fast. Lets hope that there is a volume two. A really fun and educational look at the military life of celebrities.

From Abbott, Bud---longtime screen comic---to Zanuck, Darryl---famed film producer and writer--here are reports on what the famous and infamous did in the service. Written interestingly, succicently, to-the-point no padding briefs of 500+ people you have heard of and admired. This IS a book that's hard to put down, hard to stop reading until you've checked every entry. Enjoy! (You WILL!)

Looking for a good book to read this summer? Look no further than Tragic Flaws by Davis author Scott Evans. This murder mystery featuring likable, but flawed, hero Joeseph Conrad, is an easy-to-read book that is perfect for those long airplane rides or while sitting on the beach, sipping a cold one.
Evans' has penned a flawless mystery that is gripping, with plenty of red herrings, and a plot that is fast-paced with a surprising end. Joseph Conrad, a professor of English, finds himself caught up in a nightmare after he discovers a dead body. From the opening chapter, to the exciting ending, this is a book you'll find hard to put down.
Evans skillfully weaves his love of the English language with an intriguing tale of mystery and suspense. You'll learn a little about great literature and be entertained. What a winning combination!

What a great story! I particularly loved the scenes with Joe Conrad interacting with his students in class. Try to guess the killer 3/4 of the way through. There are enough clever twists and turns along the way that this is a challenge indeed. I don't think I'll hear that Chris Isaac song ever the same way again.

Harnartia/Tragic Flaws/Catch 22

Review Date: 2008-06-29
The quality of writing in this novel is sparkling, making it an exhilarating read on literary merit alone. If you're familiar with California's San Joaquin-Sacramento Delta, Scott Evans' references to Stockton's musically gifted native son Chris Isaak, and to central valley locations, will make you feel at home. You've seen these places, know the river delta channels that are locally called sloughs, commute on I-5, know what tule fog is, etc. If you don't know who Chris Isaak is, he is one web search away. And, so what if you aren't familiar with Lodi (Creedance Clearwater's Lodi), Stockton, Sacramento, and Davis, California? Joe Conrad will show you around town while he fights to salvage his personal and professional life.

How do I share why Tragic Flaws gripped my intellect and a gamut of my emotions, page after page, without ruining the story for those of you that have not read the novel? Although a prime suspect in the case, I intrinsically believed that Joe Conrad was not the diabolical psychopathic predator that murdered young women. Believing that didn't help me one iota; it was my personal Catch 22 as the reader. Although I felt that Joe did not deserve being "a person of interest," I had to concede that he did make enough mistakes in his choices/judgments (as we all can innocently do) that suspicion could stack up against him. Could and did.

I pictured my husband in Joe's ill-fated shoes; I could see how difficult it would be for him to defend himself against such accusations. The tension Scott Evans employs to accomplish this exasperating dilemma for the reader, the volatile balancing act he maintains is excellent.

If I were Joe, what the hell would I do? Like many of us who are regular people in society with families, jobs, routines, and lives that are not often, if ever, in the harsh media spotlight, Joe stumbles into that probing spotlight a stunned, frustrated, and desperate man.

Read Tragic Flaws. I believe you'll be riveted by this story.

This is a must for every motorcycle racing fan. I am a GP fan but unfortunately Wayne's career ended a couple of years before I started getting into bike racing. This book is an amazing tale of courage. I could not imagine going through what he had to go through. One of the best biographies I have ever read.

I met wayne as a fan in 1987 at Road Atlanta when he rode for Honda after having read so many magazines about him.I never Heard of Kevin Schwantz until that weekend and Wayne despite being very busy, courteously found time to have Shay take a photo of both of us and give me an autograph. He was so receptive and pleasant. That weekend I watched in awe his amazing battle against Kevin's Suzuki and would never forget that day for the rest of my life. Then I continued to watch him on TV from 1988 to that fateful day.The book brought tears and lumps in my throat. This book tells it all and is a must buy.I am also a racer a know the will and the determination to win at all costs. This book also helps us analyze ourselves and our personal relationship with GOD.A precious collector's item to have.

It's been some time since I last read this biography of Wayne Rainey, but I certainly remember the emotions, and especially the growing pride, I felt with each turned page. The writing was very easy to read, and the content flowed well from Wayne's childhood and foundation of a Champion in the making, through his personal relationships, and to the present (time of writing). I recommend this book to all that loved to watch his battles with Eddie Lawson, Kevin Schwantz, Freddie Spencer, and Mick Doohan, and wish to simply know more about the Champion. And I recommend it to anyone that thinks the world and life aren't fair. Perservere!

Wayne Rainey was certainly one of the greatest GP Racers to hit the scene in the late 80's-early 90's. With 3 consecutive world championships under his belt he had his 4th wrapped up when tragedy struck. Rainey's career was cut short and thus began a new chapter in this champion's life. The book deals with his youth, and his early racing years on the dirt tracks of Southern California and later, the dirt tracks throughouit the US. His entry into GP racing makes for some of the most intriging and blatantly honest reading you will find. With Kenny Roberts as team manager, Wayne Rainey's career began to open up and the more you read the better this book gets. This is simply the best book on the "inside" of a GP racer and the entire lifestyle that goes with it. (Ever wonder how "team-mates" get along when they BOTH want to win? ) Don't pass this one up. It deserves to be read.

In the writing styles of Sinclair and Steinbeck, Baillie submerges the reader in the worlds above and below a small mining town in Montana. Baillie's descriptions are so detailed you have no choice but to believe you're there. A quick "can't put it down read", this modern day classic keeps you riveted through a dizzying series of twists and turns. A beautiful story of an entire town's redemption through love.

I can only say this - I love it. Its a mind blowing work. This book reads like a literary puzzle. The story is wonderful and the characters are riveting, but there is a much deeper element at work in this novel. I had to read it twice to "get it".

This book is an allegory of spiritual awakening and enlightenment. At least I believe it is. A secondary character appears to really be an angel. Another's words are shadowy paraphrases from collections like the Bible. I'm sure there is much much more. You don't find novels like this very often - real literature in a commercial style. Each time I read a section, I find myself wondering "what is Baillie really saying?" Its a fun game.

Lucas, the main character, is so real, his emotions, his thoughts so authentic. His love of "the girl next door" moved me to tears. His "Poorest-kid-in-town" friend Scabby broke my heart, too. The beauty inside of him, erases the tarnish on the outside. Heather, the love interest, is a complex young woman, with a burden so huge it can't be shouldered by anybody. She is an emblem of strength and fraility, blended into one. The town in this story is hellish; maybe it is Hell. I don't know. But it feels so dark and evil.

This book is outstanding and Baillie has a gift. Is this the "great American novel"? Well, no. But it is far better than most of the contemporary works out there. I couldn't put it down. I recommend it highly.

Where the Sun Don't Shine is a powerful tale of coming of age that touches upon bravery, loss, young love, family love, and friendship all set in a town so real I felt I could step into the setting and start up a conversation with the characters.

This story intrigues with little-known information on mining, it inspires laughter at the situations young adults find themselves in and it evokes tears.

I found that I cared about the characters and didn't want anything bad to happen to them--this is a very enjoyable read.

I read this book after having it be recommended by a work collegue. At first I thought that it was going to be a self-serving work since the author grew up in a mining town much like the one in the book. I was dead wrong. This is an impressive first effort, in my opinion. From the opening pages to the final sentence, I read the most moving, most introspective, most powerful book I've seen in several years. Yes, there are a few scenes here and there in the book that I thought were a little cliche', but those blend so well in the overall story, that they don't detract from the message the author is trying to convey; that message being - it sometimes takes tragedy to make us whole.

The main character of the story is so identifiable, so real, I could feel his every emotion and every frustration. I did not want the story to end.

I have already recommended this book to my book club and to my family. I hope this isn't Baille's only effort. He has touched a deep part of the human experience and left its impact on me. This book is from a small publisher. I believe that it could be a major book someday. Lets hope so.

There are so few resources to help us males who grieve, or to help those who would help us through our grief understand what it is that makes dealing with grief so difficult. Every member of my grief group that has read this has found himself in one or more of the twenty grief experiences analyzed. We males are not special, but we are certainly different. I would further recommend Raising Cain: Protecting the Emotional Life of Boys by Kindlon and Thompson for an even deeper understanding of why it is the we males have a hard time "getting over it" and finding a normalcy in our lives.

Most books seems to be written for and about widows, with perhaps a few pages about how the experience might differ for men. But this book is ALL about men -- their words, their stories, and commentary by the authors. A particularly helpful list of resources in the Appendix.

I seen that I wasn't crazy to have all these emotions and knew that I wasn't the only one going through this. It really is a great book for widowers to read and understand what they are going through.

I've read many books since my wife died on June 18th, most I thought would be helpful to a woman, but were of no use to me. I really thought this was a helpful book. Several of the stories really hit home with me. I think I most related to Bill, but I related to Hank, Mark, and Randy also. Some people I could not relate to at all. (Peter, George, Jan, etc.) It was really good that I bought this book. The one thing I didn't like was the fact that nearly all these interviews were conducted several years after the fact, and not in the first critical year. Maybe a few were I don't know. For example Hank's was done 50 months afterwards, and they had to clean it up to make it readable, but what condition was he in the third month? Most of the people want help right when it happens and not a thing that they look for it 4 years after and all. But this is the only thing I've seen that really deals with the men's perspective, and it had a number of different men, it was just a great book. The commentary was fantastic, and was very helpful. I was very thankful that I could buy a book (although insanely expensive - I paid nearly $60) and find that there were other men that I could relate to. That was a great thing and it was worth every penny for me.

I've just completed this great book on the grieving plight of men who have lost their spouse. I'm currently walking that same path, only having lost my beloved wife a mere 13 1/2 weeks ago. I've read three books that deal with death/heaven, and so far this has been the best of the three. I plan on re-reading this again, particularly the stories about the men who are around my age (36) and how younger men deal with their grief.

A must read for any man in my (or our) situation.

The person who doesn't like mystery books, I would still recommend it to them because after they read it they would love reading mystery books. My thoughts about the protagonist were that they really wanted to solve the mystery about the woodshed. They wanted to know what was wrong with it. They were not afraid to go down and look. I really loved this book because it had mysteries in it and I love reading mystery books.

Would you think that you would find a trap door in the potato pit in your aunt's basement or in the wood shed in her back yard? Well, the Boxcar Children didn't, but they found the trap doors, they had things from the Revolutionary War! They found strange letters about what was going on in the house during the Revolutionary War! Find out what mysterious things they find!

I think this book is so good because you never know what will happen next, like when the children find the trap door in the woodshed and then they find the trap door in the potato pit! The moral of this story is never play with some thing that isn't yours.

Have read the first eight Boxcar Children books and think this is one of the three best with the other two being The Yellow House Mystery and The Blue Bay Mystery. This book could stand alone although an important character is from The Mystery Ranch book and might be more fun to read after reading that book. This is also the only book of the first eight to have a dedication. The Boxcar Children books are all good reading and can't think of a good reason not to read them in order. With the Box sets 1-4 and 5-8, four books are available for the price of two and a half. I read these books in order and there are references in the books to events and characters in previous books but not enough that the books could not be read out of order or as stand alone books. Gertrude Chandler Warner wrote the Boxcar Children books over a period of many years from the 1940's to the 1970's. She must have enjoyed writing them and that spirit comes through in her books.

Like "Mike's Mystery", this is a mystery with a solid foundation and never once drags.

I first read it when I was about eight and learnt several things I didn't know before. I learned what ammunition meant. It also was my first introduction to any information about the Revolutionary War.

The story takes place primarily on a farm in New England that dates back to the 1700's. Grandfather and Aunt Jane grew up there, and he buys it back for her to live in. But everyone seems to think something is wrong with the house, and the children set out to find out what it is and clear the air of all secrets. And they are pretty sure the woodshed holds an important clue.

Read this book to your children - I am sure they will like it.

I purchased this Self Confidence CD to deal with my negative mental chatter. New to the writing field, my self doubt beats up on me so strongly I talk myself out of projects before starting them. Trevor Scott has an excellent voice for hypnosis, inspiring trust - I'm not worried he's hidden subliminal message to make me do something against my will. He speaks with so much confidence I am able to internalize his messages. I've bought several hypnosis recordings where foreign accents, unsureness in the voice of the speaker, and background music that sounds like alien landings took the value out of the session, for example: Hypnosis to Enhance Creative Writing by Charles Vald. I was relieved Trever Scott did such a good job with voice, choice of background music, and well worded messages. I would like to see more Hypnosis CD's available from Trever Scott. All this being said, my husband didn't care for his voice but I think that may be because some men would only trust a woman's voice in a hypnosis situation. Excellent Job Trever Scott! Thank you.

This book delivered practical investment tips and advice in a straight forward easy to understand manner.

Despite the fact that the author works for Fidelity Investments and promotes Fidelity (and other financial services firms) in the book, he seems to have a genuine interest in helping average investors invest more successfully for retirement. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. If there is one book on investing that you read in the next 12 months, this should be it.

This was one of the best investment books I have read in a long time. It contains dozens of practical straight forward ideas that you can use and apply in your portfolio right away. The strategies could save you hundreds--possibly thousands of dollars each year. By applying just one of the seven strategies in my portfolio I was able to immediately produce a hundred fold return on the investment I made in the book.

If your looking for a book that is full of simple, powerful investment ideas and strategies that you can use right away, this will be well worth your investment of time and money.

I've read many books on investing in the last few years. Most of the books I have read (Suze Orman, Charles Schwab, Johanthon Pond etc.) provided good information -but lacked specific actionable steps that I could use and apply right away.

Scott Magnacca's book is straightforward and gave me a lot of common sense- but not obvious- tips and ideas that I have been able to quickly use and apply to more effectively manage my portfolio and save money.

I highly reccomend it. If your planning for a "Successful Retirement" this should be required reading.

Well worth my time

Anyone who owns a mutual fund or who is saving for a successful retirement should read this book.

The book was an easy read and shared a variety of 'real world' examples and case studies on how to apply each of the 7 strategies.

Unlike most financial books, this book wasn't filled with numbers and formulas. Just good, practical and easy to use advice.

I especially enjoyed the chapters on "tax-efficient investing" and how to evaluate and pick a financial advisor.

This book does just one thing for a person hoping to derive income from the sale of photographs. It tells you how to sell photographs.

It doesn't tell you anything about equipment, or picture taking, or processing, or even how to run a photography business. It doesn't even take a comprehensive approach to marketing. Instead it provides useful tips on marketing photography, period. Moreover, Bourne doesn't just limit himself to one market, like stock photography. He covers all the markets and if one secret isn't applicable to you, the next one may be right up your alley.

Calling it "88 Secrets" is a misnomer, because many of the ideas contained are simple common sense that someone interested in selling pictures could figure out for him or herself. Secondly, there are far more than 88 secrets because many of sections called secrets contain more than one idea for marketing.

The reader will sometimes say, I knew that, sometimes say, I should have known that, and sometimes say, I never thought of that. But if you read the book and you follow some of the tips, you will increase sales of your pictures. Although the book is quite short, it's also inexpensive and the person willing to follow Bourne's advice will soon amortize the cost of the book. It probably won't put you in direct competition with Art Wolfe, but it will increase your photographic income if you have the will power to follow the tips.

For example, the author discusses a traditional subject, query letters to editors to whom one hopes to sell pictures. He tells you what has to go into a letter if you want to get the editor's attention. He even provides a sample letter.

In the very next paragraph, Bourne discusses something relatively new, e-books and how to go about publishing them. He even suggests software that will ease the work, and even how to structure an e-book. He says photography e-books are most popular if they take a how-to, travel, or adventure approach. "It will be easier to sell an e-book that features pictures of Yellowstone National Park if it is written as a travelogue rather than an attractive Yellowstone picture book."

I've read a few books on marketing pictures and sometimes find reasonable marketing advice buried in the verbiage. Often it's aimed at just one market. Here it's simple and effective. All one has to do is read a secret and follow it. And of course, take a reasonably good picture.

Wasn't what I thought it would be. My fault.

I was thinking this would be a book about places to sell your photography like post cards and bookmarkers or stuff like that. I guess I just didn't look it over enough. It is pretty much just basic stuff about how to run a business in photography. Some I thought were a little simple, like it says you should have a seperate phone for your business. Also, you should tell family members to not use that phone for anything other than business. That would be true of any business be it photography or selling comic books. Some of it is good business practices that many would not think of but I think you could get a book on operating a home business or small business from the library and learn most of this stuff. It is not an expensive book so I'm not going to complain much. I would suggest though that a person that is going to do photography work might think of staying with one or two areas and get books on those. For example, wedding photography and stock photography and learn how to make it in those areas. Go ahead and buy it, if you don't like it you are not out much.

Essential reading for anyone wanting to market their photos.

Scott Bourne is an outstanding teacher and successful marketer. The book exemplifies this by being well organized, very readable and packed with valuable information for any photographer wanting to market and sell photographs.

The three divisions of the book are well thought out. As I considered marketing my photos the section on "general secrets" was very helpful. The last two sections provide valuable information on who to contact for sales and all the issues that need to be considered to complete a successful business transaction.
