Okay- I have almost all the astronauts biographies and so called auto- biographies.
It is hard to impress me, most of the time they are over the top and you can feel the air whipping thru their scarves. Not true or impressive. But when I opened this 128 page book, my first impression was "Hmmm, thin?"

But upon reading this I was impressed. Captain Scott, who flew twice in space has done a great job -HIMSELF -in writing and telling the story of the contempoary astronaut experience. From building model airplanes and watching 'Sky King' to flying the Navy's F-14 Tomcat, becoming a NASA mission specialist and walking in space,This is a great book.
A quick read, and more importantly- a fun one.
You will enjoy this one.

A real American success story, told with simplicity and kindness by a real American hero. I want everyone I care about to read this book.

"Reflections From Earth Orbit" by Winston E. Scott is a well written true story about Scott's Experiences as a NASA space shuttle astronaut and US Navy test pilot, with reflections back on his child hood and High School years. At one moment the reader feels like he is floating next to Scott in the total weightlessness of space and the next he can feel the struggles of a young black kid growing up in a poor section of Miami, trying to figure out what he wants to do when he grows up.

Unlike many successful people, Scott is very humble and states right from the beginning that "No one can accomplish anything of significance without the help and encouragement of others." He gives his High School band leader Mr. LeDue credit for making a phone call to the right people which insured that he was accepted into FSU after already receiving a rejection letter from the esteemed college. Scott states, "Had Mr. LeDue not made that phone call, I would most likely not have entered the navy, become an aviator, engineer and astronaut."

Reading this book is like sitting down with a friend who happens to be a retired astronaut and listening to him talk about space flight and some key events that led up to his magical life.

I have thorougly enjoyed reading Capt. Scott's book. I think many people are like me in that they have always found Space very intriging, the next frontier. In Capt. Scott's story he takes you on your very own space adventure and you live it through his eyes. I found the mix of his personal story along with all the wonderful Space adventure to be most inspiring. He is truly living the American Dream. He dared to dream when his was a very young man and his dreams led him to the stars. You will not be able to put this book down and when you finish it you will feel like you can do anything to achieve your dreams! I can't wait for his next book!

I finished this book wishing there was a lot more to read - and thinking the book would make an absolutely OUTSTANDING movie! I'm a big fan of NASA and the space program, so I compare Captain Scott's book to Homer Hickam's book "Rocket Boys" (the book that the movie "October Sky" is based on). Both had a dream as young men and found a way to make them come true, both ended up with NASA, but the edge has to go to this book because you really get to see what happens over the course of a lifetime to result in someone actually getting to be an astronaut and fly two missions on the Space Shuttle! It's an incredible look at the experiences that shape a remarkable life. You also come away with a real sense that the most amazing achievements in life are truly the result of following your dreams and constantly making the most of the opportunities you're given. Add confidence, a positive outlook, and enough determination and you just might be able to fulfill your own dreams some day. Awesome book - 5 stars out of 5!

This is simply the best in its class--a foundation of my medical education. The diagrams are excellent. Text explanations are clear, detailed, precise and, most importantly, succinct. When I die, bury me with Vander's Renal Physiology.

Real Physiology provides the basics needed for a medical school renal unit. By purchasing this book, a medical student is able to focus on the renal system in more detail than in some basic physiology texts.

Very good book, everything is simplified, easy introduction into subject, it is almost like being spoon fed.
Pathologic correlation's are given, it does not have all the biochemistry but major subjects are covered and author has conceptualized that makes everything easy.

For anyone who struggled to understand why the nephron concentrates, then dilutes, then concentrates again the urine, this book will do much to ease your pain. Since medical school I've purchased Editions 1, 3, & 5, just so that I could keep up with my interns & residents. Here's how he does it:
#1: short book, (you know how intimidating those tomes can be)
#2: lots of diagrams
#3: end-of-chapter questions (with answers & explanations)

If you want to understand the Kidney, no matter where you are in your studies or practice, I wholeheartedly recommend this text.

This is an easy to read complete review of what you need to know to play golf well. After reading the book I made some adjustments to my grip, stance and swing plane and, combined with some minor arm strengthening exercises, I have increased the distance I hit each club in my bag by at least 10 yards. Every serious golfer should read this book. Ted Turner.

Golf is sometimes so complicated that it's not worth all the expense and frustration, and other times so simple it's beautiful. Reading this book, I felt the feeling you get when working with a great teacher who simplifies (vs. complicates) the sport. There are some sections in this book that you don't find in others (fitness, how to find a teacher, and loads of quotes from great players) but the biggest help to me was the reveiw of the fundamentals. In the book, Rader wrote something about posture that I was off on - a quick fix (for me, it was bending at the hips) and I'm hitting it better than in the last five years. Go figure - 25 bucks to fix something my club pro would've charged 125 for...per session.

This book is a golfers dream. A simple instructional book that covers all aspects of the game. The only book I have found that writes out a practice program for you and tells you how to find a teacher as well. Great read and well written.

This book is easy to read. It has humor and solid instruction for all level of golfers. Certainly worth giving to those I play golf with.

This book explains the fundamentals of the golf swing in a clear, concise easy to understand language. It also presents a realistic explaination of the practice and committment necessary to improve one's golf game and provides guideance on how to develop a self improvement program. Probably the best golf book I have read since the Ben Hogan classic analysis of the golf swing many years ago.

the forward starts off "(she) could have left russia--remember that as you read these journals." what comes across initially as anna's relentless account of putin's rise to autocratic dominance is more of an alarming and disheartening account of russia's systematic devolution where democracy, freedom of press and the semblance of a worthy society were fleetingly promised as they were taken away. incredible heart-wrenching accounts of the moscow theater and beslan school massacres as well as the two chechen wars.

A must read for anyone who wants to understand the "new" Russia. One hopes others will have the courage to take up Ms. Politkovskaya's crusade in exposing the corruption so rampant in Putin's (and now Medvedev's)Russia.

For those who care about Russia, it is hard to put this book down. It is a compelling read. However, one cannot help read "A Russian Diary" without an overwhelming sense of sadness. We know how the story ends. The last entry in the diary was made in August 2006, and soon thereafter Anna Politkovskaya life ends, murdered by unknown assailants in Moscow.

The profound nature of this loss comes across on every page of this book, as Ms. Politkovskaya carefully and without flinching describes contemporary Russian society, warts and all, as perhaps no other journalist left living can. This book brings the reader a first-hand look into the tragedies of Dubrovka Theater and the school siege at Beslan. And also chronicles the seemingly endless war in Chechnya. She asks hard questions of the Russian government and its apparent failure to manage these matters.

As great of a loss as the death of Anna Politkovskaya is, her dairy is a reminder of perhaps the greatest tragedy and missed opportunity in the last quarter of a century. With the fall of the Soviet Union, Russia had the opportunity once and forever to move into the family of democratic states. This book documents that although there are elections, this has not really happened, not even close. What we have now is a tightly controlled state governed by an intelligence oligarchy with a fondness for the Soviet past, which has restricted rather than expanded civil liberties and workers' rights. These restrictions have been justified in the name of protecting national security and the promotion of state controlled capitalism. "A Russian Diary" documents how the Russian people are languishing with a government seemingly disinclined to tackle the serious social welfare problems that are besetting the country.

This book is commentary on the Russian government, but it also asks tough questions of Americans and Western Europeans. What could they have done differently to nudge Russia toward a democratic direction? Is it too late? Are we destined to regress into a more perverse version of the Cold War, with a Russian government mistrusting the West once again, but now empowered by oil and gas revenues?

I hope that is not the case both for Russia and the West. However, without Anna Politkoyskaya alive to point out the deficiencies in the Russian government and the shortcomings of the West, the unthinkable becomes possible.

In the preface, the editors noted that this book will make a lot of people angry, especially proponents of the therapies being critiqued in this book. While this is undoubtedly true for many such proponents, I think it would be a serious mistake for such people to dismiss what is being said in this book. I am one of the top practitioners of Thought Field Therapy and found this book to be of tremendous value and feel gratitude, not anger towards its authors. Having explored many of the controversial, new therapies, I know better than anyone the pitfalls and hazards of drifting into pseudoscience and quite frankly, have repeatedly been dismayed at what I have seen in terms of a complete inability to engage in critical thinking on the part of many people involved in the endless array of "alternative" therapies. Much of the problem, I believe, comes from ignorance of the principles outlined in this book. The list of features of pseudosciences is especially helpful and should be read and carefully considered by all proponents of unconventional approaches. In this way, as Carl Sagan puts it, "deep truths can be winnowed from deep nonsense". This book should be required reading in graduate schools, as well as courses that train people in any of these controversial, new approaches and I intend to incorporate this into what I teach.

Although largely aware of the plethora of pseudoscientific nonsence that besets the field of mental health, it is very refreshing to have this collation of information brought together in one volume. As a clinical psycholgist I am confronted daily by people who have been referred to purveyors of unscientific, and often damaging, "interventions". All too frequently, these people have been referred to such snake-oil sellers by mental health professionals - psychologists, psychaitrists, medical doctors etc. This book, and hopefully further editions of it, should be compulsory reading for everyone seeking to work in the mental health and forensic fields. Only by truly embracing scientific methodology and an unremitting scepticism can we hope to move forward in understanding mental health and criminal problems. Our patients, their families, and the public deserve no less.

Why do clinicians keep practicing forms of therapy that lack scientific support?

This edited book explores the widening gap between scientists and practitioners in the field of clinical psychology. It covers many of the most pressing controversies surrounding diagnosis, treatment methods, specific disorders, and the self-help movement.

It is well written and exceptionally balanced. I recommend it highly to my clinical psychology graduate students, but I think it is also valuable for practicing clinicians and for other people who are interested in the specific topics covered, including recovered memory therapy, autism treatment, ADHD, new age therapies, multiple personality disorder (aka dissociative identity disorder), trauma treatment, herbal antidepressants, and - one of my favorite chapters - substance abuse recovery.

As a psychologist who is aware of some of the questionable research and clinical practices in psychology I read this book with interest. Many of the chapters were interesting and the criticisms valid. I was disappointed, however, that a book that claims to debunk pseudoscience seemed to have a major blindspot. For example Waschbusch and Hill's chapter examines treatments for ADHD without reference to the controversy that exists about the validity of ADHD as a neurobiological syndrome. There is debate about the unscientific manner in which groups of nonspecifc behaviours are named as syndromes, in the absence of any physical evidence. Discussing treatments for these "disorders" without mentioning this at all seems a glaring oversight in a book that devotes so much attention to issues of diagnosis and assessment and claims to expose pseudosicence. It hardly takes courage or insight to criticise the fringe elements, but what about blatant pseudoscientific practices carried out by mainstream psychologists?

Lilienfield does a bang-up job debunking some of the long-held myths in Clinical Psychology. Don't allow that to lead you to conclusion that this book is about bashing the Science of Psychology, however! Clinical Psychology is something quite different from the evidence-based side of the field, and this book illustrated that it is infested with more pseudo-science than science. That's partly because such a large percentage of the public has no critical thinking skills, and cannot see the difference between self-help nonsense and real science. Lilienfield does a good job helping us start on the road toward discerning the snake oil from the medicine.

It's almost laughable that one reviewer showers this book with accolades while also touting herself as a top expert in yet another pseudo-scientific "therapy," Thought Field Therapy. Lilienfield et al. actually cover that idiocy in this marvelous book, pointing out that there's no such thing as "thought fields," and no validity to the notion that TFT has any effect on mental or physical health! Like the great Investigator of the Supernatural, James Randi, Scott O. Lilienfield will be very busy writing new editions of this useful book.

This book has a great outline, thought process and good examples on the process of writing history.

This is a great book and I was able to get even more out it since I am one of Dr. Page's students at East Tennessee State.

Richard Marius gives us in this short book an enthusiasm for the pursuit of the past that is simply infectious. Although the work is not an in-depth study of Historiography, it is a great introduction to the would be Historian on the very basic rules of researching and composing a paper on any historical subject.

Marius has written an extremely readable and informative book on the writing of history. He proceeds from showing readers what questions to ask in doing historical research into types of historical writing can be done, from discriptive to argumentitive.
However, the most useful part of the book is the chapter on sources and writing. He skillfully shows readers how to choose a topic and narrow their focus into a managable paper. He also discusses the use of CD-Rom and Internet sources, a necessity for any good book on the writing of history in the early 21st century, particularly due to the increase in the reliance on Internet research by college undergraduates and HS students that are comfortable with this technology. The book also makes actually doing research seem like not such a daunting scary task, which at first thought it seems like for many undergraduates. The one problem with this section is that Marius advocates the use of paper notes. As has been seen with many professional academic historians lately, the use of paper notes can end up costing the writer dearly, particularly with the use of a large amount of sources. Marius should have included a section on how to use a data base or other computerized note taking system.
Marius also uses many examples to back up his points throughout the book, even publishing one complete paper and then commenting on its strengths and weaknesses in order to give the reader a better understanding. The remainder of the book is an extremely useful three chapters on writing mechanics as well as quoting and citing a variety of sources. I found the section on footnotes quite good and useful. This section will be especially useful for the undergraduate who arrives on campus without ever having to use footnotes while in high school.
Overall, this is an outstanding book. The only real drawback is that since its publication (3rd edition) the sections on the Internet are in many ways obsolete. But with the ever changing technology and things available on the Internet, both good and bad, no book can keep up.

History prof recommended this for help in writing research papers in history department.

Compact and inspirational, the author makes his points by way of examples and citations from historians. Passionate about his subject area, he communicates this well and infuses it into his observations and recommendations for writing about historical topics.

While the jury is still out on my first paper to utilize this resource, I already know I am a better writer of history for having utilized this fine resource. Just the idea of grabbing your reader and making him want to read the rest was useful.

this book is aimed for, but I'm thoroughly enjoying it! I'm a straight Jewish woman and I found the book at the O'Hare airport bookstore recently. Hey, why not take a chance and learn about gay Catholic lawyers? I'm glad I took that chance as Pomfret is a wonderful writer.

SINCE MY LAST CONFESSION, A GAY CATHOLIC MEMOIR by Scott Pomfret is a must read book for al GLBT persons who are or ever considered themselves Catholic and in fact, all GLBT Christian persons.
The book will have you laughing hysterically, getting angry and make you think.
" Since My Last Confession" makes it clear how a Gay person can even consider being a Catholic while it points out the hypocrisy of the Roman Church and it's contradictions.
Filled with great humor, a true love and respect for the basic principals of the church as well as poignancy and regret for the church trying to use the smoke screen of homosexuality to hide it's failures in the pedophile sex scandal.
Set in Boston where the author is an active member of a Franciscan Church as well as an open Gay man living in a committed relationship the book is full of humor and historical facts that opens your mind to the truth of Christ's message and the differences between the Truth and the churches current position.
I strongly recommend this book for it's openness and honesty as well as historical facts presented in an enjoyable and humorous way.

Does being a self-assured and proud gay man make you a bit of a hypocrite in also proclaiming to be a practicing Catholic? That's the question that Scott Pomfret asks himself in his hilarious (as well as insightful and seemingly historically/scholarly accurate) memoir. Starting with remembrances of how it felt to belong to the Church in his youth, he resumes practicing his faith in Catholicism, at a time and place where more people were leaving it: in Boston, at the time of the Church's lobbying to repeal gay marriages.

Pomfret (who works as a government attorney during the day and, with his partner Scott Whittier, is responsible for the "Romentics" series of explicit gay romantic novels) shows a knack for describing the stereotypical yet colorful individuals, both gay and straight, he met while involved as a lector (reader) at church services, and attending meetings of Dignity and a gay spirituality group. There's the tough pastor Father Bear-Daddy, a trio of elderly Irish lady volunteers he calls the Hale Marys (they're all named Mary), spirituality group leader Mama Bear, and the worldly Father McSlutty, among others. He also has a few choice names for the Archbishop, as well as the Pope (Pope Benedict XVI, whom he calls B-16.) He rants at, yet tries to reconcile, the rules and politics of the Church, which he correctly points out, largely came from individuals throughout history, not God. Ultimately, he focuses on the reality that the Church is made up of a diverse group of individuals, gay and straight, clergy or not, and spotlights the more memorable (or outrageous) among them.

As a "product" of 12 years of Catholic education (enough to turn off ANYone to organized religion for life!), I must admit I roared with laughter dozens of times at the author's spot-on depictions of the Church's less-than-logical rules and pronouncements. He deals with many concepts that would be considered in bad taste, and joyfully leaps over "the line" to tell it like it is. He almost (but not quite) made me want to give "my" church another try as well, which is certainly a miracle worthy of papal-declared sainthood! My only beef with the book is that it is somewhat unfocused and rambling, with many "déjà vu" moments that seem to overlap with sections that went much earlier in the book. Don't know if non-Catholics can relate much to it, but I do recommend the book highly for both practicing and "lapsed" Catholics. Give it four stars out of five.

Pomfret's writing on the Catholic Church from his perspective as a gay man had me on my knees in hysterics! He brings a much needed light touch to what has otherwise been a heavy time for the Archdiocese of Boston. As a former seminarian who lived "inside those walls", I highly recommend Since My Last Confession for all who have struggled with the Catholic Church in recent years. This is a must read for gay and straight alike!

Scott Pomfret is a genius. This is a must read for every GLBT Catholic on the face of the planet. Every 100 years or so someone comes around and writes a brilliant and also funny account of lifes circumstances. In this case it is being GLBT and Catholic. Mr. Pomfret does it with such intellegence and wit. I feel like Mr. Pomfret has channeled my life of 64 years as a gay catholic man. No one understands gay humor like another gay person. I could not put this book down. Mr. Pomfret has validated every nuance of my life as a Catholic Gay Man. Dealing with the Hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church is made easier once you understand them better. Mr. Pomfret does a brillant job of peeling away the layers of Church B... S... and lays open a human experience that reflects our lives. I am so grateful to Mr. Pomfret. Every Roman Catholic Priest, Bishop, Arch-Bishop, Cardinal and Pope should read this book. Free at last, free at last, thank God Almighty and Mr. Pomfret, I am free at last. I am not alone.

This was a great collection of strips. You can see the natural and humorous growth of Zoe, Hammie and baby Wren, who keep Wanda and Darryl constanstly on their toes and in the grocery store. I have always loved Baby Blues and will be sad to see them "grow up"....like the kids in For Better Or For Worse. That's when you know a strip is darn great...when you think of the characters as real and you can really relate to their daily "lives". Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

I bought this book for my wife, because she loves chocolate and we have raised two kids. It is a very funny book. It should be read while eating chocolate too.

I loved this new Baby Blues collection. It simply had me in tears. I liked it when Wren bumped her chin, the Hammie got greenstick fracture, then Zoe got bruised knuckles, and Darryl sprang his ankle. It was a hilarious Baby Blues story. I recommend this collection to anyone who wants to laugh.

Great reading! Good for parents who have very small amounts of personal space! Be prepared for lots of laughter coming from the closed bathroom door!

I can't believe the longevity of this strip and how it has stayed consistantly funny. When it first came out I found it really amusing as it dealt with the pitfalls of being a parent with a baby/children. Now all these years later, they are on their third child and the jokes are fresh and still very amusing. Baby Blues is an excellent series for the young and older fans.

I recently had a baby and I received this book from a friend. It instantly put a smile on my face and made me feel good about the experience I have just been through.

I plan to purchase more copies for baby shower gifts!

I have bought several of these books for babyshower gifts. The book is hysterical!!!! Every babyshower I have been to, the guests pass the book around and read one of the poems at random (it's more entertaining than the games). If you have ever experienced child birth, you will LOVE this book.

Even though I do not have children yet - I purchased this book for a friend. It was absolutely marvelous! I could not quit laughing and thinking at the same time how true it was after watching all of my friends go through the process!! I will definitely purchase additional copies to put with my shower gifts and go back and read it again when I decide to finally have children! I especially liked the work references!

I loved the collection of poems in this book. It takes you from the beginning to the end with continuously hilarious poems relating to pregnancy and childbirth. I am pregnant with my first child and this book has helped me keep my sense of humor while experiencing all aspects of pregnancy. The illustrations were also unique and imaginative.

I laughed so hard I peed a little! This book is so VERY true, so VERY funny, and really helps make the experience of pregnancy easier on the mother-to-be. I've been pregnant for 8 months now (feels like 8 years) and I wish I'd had this four months ago! Thank you, Ms. Hodes, for such a wonderful gift for mothers everywhere!
(In case you don't catch my drift by now, I highly reccomend this book if you know someone who's pregnant or have been pregnant yourself. You'll love it!)

After reading Stepping Out of the Bubble a year ago, I went back and read it again for a second time. I was able to pick up even more information this time around that helped me understand and overcome some of my own internal conflicts. This is a book you can read at any point in your life and always find information that pertains to that particular moment. Krehbiel has a way of explaining things that others may consider unexplainable. Whether you are a student, a teacher, or just a guy like me, this book can and will change your life.

James P. Krehbiel's Stepping Out of the Bubble was a fascinating read. I found myself underlining various passages. His explanation of how we get stuck in the bubble (comfort zone), and how we find our way out is powerful. It provided me with hope as I move through my own personal journey. I found myself experiencing an emotional reaction to many of the case examples and concepts he explored. He definitely hit some "hot buttons" in my life. But Mr. Krehbiel also provided specific guidelines and tools for stepping out of the bubble. At one point he says, "Courage can be defined by those who live outside the bubble as opposed to those who live in it. I like to compare stepping out of the bubble to wading into the water."

His chapter which includes ideas on multidimensional thinking is appropriate in today's political climate. He indicates that true dialogue takes into consideration the appreciation for differences in opinions. He makes some profound statements about pop culture's affect on the lives of today's children. He also gives parents tools and resources for assisting their children in bettering their behavior. The book ends with a resounding "yes" to life with a hopeful, powerful way of perceiving and reframing life's problems. This was an excellent book!

Stepping Out Of The Bubble by James P. Krehbiel, Is an outstanding book on Counseling Therapy. Krehbiel, is able to put life patterns and fears into perspective so that the lay person can fully understand the mystery that most think is behind counseling. His approach to show that so much of what we seek answers for is within ourselves and with the right counsellor we can become free and step out of the Bubble or Bubbles that a lot of us are in.

This book should be a gift to every teen and their parents, no home should be without it.

"Stepping Out of the Bubble : Reflections On the Pilgrimage of Counseling Therapy by James P. Krehbiel is an amazing and outstanding book that provides help and direction to the many people that are suffering from problems described in this book.

I was amazed at how many of the problems and challenges, that the author writes about, are problems and challenges I have seen many people suffer with.

The counseling theory and practice information in this book provides a direction for people that have a problem and are willing to go to counseling and risk moving forward in their journey toward finding personal growth and development, and eventually stepping out of the bubble.

Many people have problems and challenges that they never seek help for and they and their loved ones continue to suffer. This book goes a long way in bringing the thought of counseling to people and helping people to better understand the counseling process.

To author James P. Krehbiel thank you for writing your great book. I am convinced your book will help many people and because of your book many more people will step out of the bubble. I recommend this book very highly and also feel it would be a great college text.

For me, "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" was reminiscent of the renowned books of author, M. Scott Peck, in the style of presenting profound insights into sensible, easy-to-understand language and clear ideas an average person can relate to. Some of the many topics included within this book are: being assertive, characteristics of an "authentic" person, the integration of each of our different personality parts, the difference between true guilt and false guilt, setting boundaries, addictions and addictions to "manic" relationships, awareness (staying in the moment or mindfulness), grounding, honoring one's inner voice, panic attacks, OCD and mood disorders. The section regarding kids and parenting was exceptional, in my opinion, and I found many points about discipline that made much sense. Also appreciated was the section relating to religion (dogma) versus faith (spiritual) as well as what needed to be said about pop culture.

I enjoyed reading "Stepping Out Of The Bubble" and would recommend it to anyone. It is enriching and inspirational.
