This book is a great book to include in a public library, home library, or school library. This book can be incorporated in many areas of learning. The author does an excellent job discussing the historical and physical features of African American music. Reading the book is like going on a musical journey. Some of the music types discussed are; jazz, ragtime, blues, gospel, and bebop. Each music type is well described, and Michele has included in each musical description a timeline, important figures associated with the music, and sample lyrics. Michele Wood also includes an activity in the book. She has put a little girl in each scene, and the reader has to locate her. It is not always easy. The little girl represents Michele when she was growing up. I highly recommend this book to young and old. Michele Wood has done an excellent job writing an interesting and informative book.

Now this is non-fiction!

This beautifully illustrated book tells the history of African-American music through poems and art. It is both informative and inspiring. I hate age-level labels on books like this. Adults will appreciate this book as much as children. I stumbled upon it at a new multicultural bookstore, discovering later that it was a Coretta Scott King winner. I can see why!

"I see the rhythm. I see the rhythm of our beginnings. I feel the pulse of a people and a land in harmony. I hear the legends told by the drum, the beats of our beliefs, the music of our ancient history..." From its roots in Africa and slave songs, to the birth of the blues, ragtime, swing, jazz, and gospel, to rhythm and blues, rock and roll, hip hop, funk, and rap, Toyomi Igus and Michele Wood trace the history of African American music. Ms Igus' lyrical free verse, rich in imagery and magic, is powerful and evocative as it swirls creatively around the page, and is complemented by Ms Wood's stunning illustrations, full of emotion and drama that captures both the feel of the music and the times. Each two page spread also includes a brief description of the musical style, and a marvelous timeline that sets that musical period in its larger, historical context. Perfect for youngsters 10 and older, I See The Rhythm is an inspiring feast for the eyes and ears that celebrates African American music and brings it to life on the page, and is a terrific introduction that shouldn't be missed.

This is a great classic but you have to devote some time to listening to the CDs, as you would to read the book. Can't complaint about the convenience though; ability to listen to the CDs while driving, at work, at home, etc. is wonderful. If you haven't tried an audio book yet, do so, you will find it to be quite an experience!

I have always been a Scott Brick (Narrator)fan. Now I am also a Truman Capote fan. I can not recommend this book enough. After I listened to this masterpiece I rented the movie "Capote". It was also a great experience.

I read the book many years ago, enjoyed it then, and after the movie Capote, decided to listen to the book. It was great in both audio and book form. Capote was really intrigued by these two murderers so, most of the story involved their lives. The details of the act itself was scarey.

I have spent much of my life planning to read the great novels but as of yet just have never found the time. Recently I discovered a wonderful alternative is listening to audio books. As of today I have now heard a number of great works but Capote's novel is in a class by itself. The writing is amazing. He owns the English language. Never does he settle for a second best way to describe a thing but writes with the precision of a master craftsman. Describing the deceased mother, whose eyes remained open, Capote refers to them as "death dulled eyes". Speaking of the shrubs he speaks of their "camel-like indifference to drought". Every sentence, every phrase, from cover to cover, is both poetic and gripping. Unlike many authors who begin strong and then begin to dull as the chapters progress, Capote keeps the freshness of his prose up throughout the work.

Simply put, this novel is on level beyond what most of us have ever read. And I must note that the reader on the audio version is intimately involved in the text. The reading in no way detracts from the power of the novel, but actualy enhances it - if that is possible.

This is one of the top 3 books I have ever heard or read - a masterpiece!

When this book was first published it was a sensation, it makes the furor over the Da Vinci look mild in comparison and it made Capote a superstar. What makes this book unique, besides the fantastic writing, was the fact that Capote completely emersed himself in this project, he turned over every stone and completely manipulated everyone involved, to learn every angle of the story. This book is a complete tour de force, this is a book you will never forget, not just because of the crime, so vividly recreated, but also due to Capote's haunting prose. Highly recommended, lives up to all the hype. It's just a shame it ruined Capote, as nakedly ambitious as he was, he was also a true talent.

These 22 memoirs focus on life after the Communist victories of 1975 and escape by land or sea. The stories are all from refugees at the Philippine Refugee Processing Center who have not yet reached the United States. They are an older group of survivors from a wide range of backgrounds. Each story is preceded by comments by the author on the storyteller or on life in and outside the Processing Center. Appendices listing the names of inmates in four "seminar" camps in Laos are included. Recommended for most libraries.--Library Journal, August 198

American POWs, the King and Queen of Laos

Review Date: 1997-07-19
In this volume, Joanna Scott shares the personal stories of nine Lao, four Khmer, and nine Vietnamese refugees whom she interviewed at the Philippine refugee Processing Center between October 1985 and May 1986. "The one thing they had in common, both with their fellow-countrymen and their fellow Indochinese, was a fervent passion for freedom that overwhelmed their mourning for a lost country." The book is divided into three sections, "Vietnam-Land of the Boat People," "Cambodia-Land of the Killing Fields," and "Laos-Land of the Seminar Camps." The refugees speaking in this book come from all walks of life and include teachers, military officers, a Buddhist monk, a housewife, a farmer, an artist, and a student. Their stories not only relate their personal ordeals in surviving, but also provide their unique perspectives and details about the political situations of their countries. One Lao refugee even reveals information about American POWs still incarcerated in various areas of Vietnam. Another Lao refugee describes the sorry fate of the Lao Royal Family and includes a photograph of the king and queen in a seminar camp. A map of seminar camps in the Viengxay area of northern Laos and four lists (compiled from memory) of those who were incarcerated in the camps are also included in this publication.

Stories that American have been reluctant to listen to-non-American participants' stories of the horrors of the Vietnam War itself, of escape from new but undemocratic countries, of conflict-ridden adjustment...personal details about the effects of the war...Scott's collection is prefaced by a dramatic frontispiece, a painting by a Vietnamese artist that depicts boat people on the high seas, titles "A people forced to go a dangerous drama across feats of darkness and turbulent seas in favor of freedom." Collected from Cambodians, Laotians, and Vietnamese in Philippine refugee camps in October 1985 [through] May 1 1986, these twenty-five stories are the testimonies closest in time to many of the events they describes. Scott identifies empathetically with the refugees' search for "the freedom land," as well as with those who failed to come here. In lengthy appendices, she provides maps of the Laotian reeducation camps and memorializing lists of those who have disappeared in them. Pictures of the refugees in the Philippine camps supplement the written stories. Some narratives are told by camp advisors; some are presented by "Name Withheld." While one story was given to Scott "in perfect English," others were told only through an interpreter. Scott presents her subjects' narratives entire, occasionally segmented by asterisks, with provocative titles ("The Hope of Ho Chi Minh Is Fallen Now") and with brief headnotes characterizing the individual or the historical situation. The narratives are occasionally quite long; almost all are organized chronologically... Here is Khamsamong Somvong, a former first lieutenant in the Royal Lao army: "In the seminar camp there were a few men who were Communists. They were there to execute the policy of the Politburo. And it was they who decided who should be killed in the camp. We were supposed to respect the Party only. If one of the Communists said, `This is red,' we had to say, `Yes, this is red.' If we said, `No, this is black,' we would be killed. So I lived a very hard life in there. I saw many people killed before me."--Oral History Review 21/2 (Winter, 1993)

Excellent version of a great play

Review Date: 2007-09-03
The play needs no commentary by me. This edition is impressive. This is the first Arden Third Series play I've read, and I find it better overall than any other commented version I've used. I bought the Arden Second Series of Henry IV, Part 2, because we're going to both plays this weekend, and the Third Series is not out yet. I was surprised how much better the Third Series is. The typography and layout make it easier to read than any other footnoted edition I've read. The notes are on the same page as the text, where they are easy to refer to, but they are in a smaller font size and in two columns, which differentiates them from the text and makes them less distracting. The headings of the notes are bold, rather than italic, which makes them quicker to locate. The text notes, of interest only to specialists, are in an even smaller font and have been moved to the bottom of the page. The result is that the extensive notes are readily accessible when I need them, yet minimally distracting when I don't.

The Introduction is long, but interesting and helpful. Being no expert, I don't judge this editor's views and choices against those of others, but his reasoning is plausible and his approach seems down-to-earth, giving what seems like appropriate weight to the commercial motives and dynamic nature of dramas.

The notes explain more than some readers need, but that's better than explaining too little for newcomers to Shakespeare.

The illustrations are interesting, and some are helpful. The map of places mentioned and the genealogies should be in every edition. The List of Roles is followed by two pages of notes about the characters. This is very helpful in keeping track of the characters, which is much harder to do when reading than when watching actors play the roles.

A cavil: I like the old-fashioned way of dealing with words ending in -ed, showing in the text when the e is stressed or elided. In this version, "unfamiliar typographic conventions have been avoided in order to minimize obstacles to the reader," and pronunciations are shown in the notes if they differ from modern usage. For me, this is more awkward than the old way, with the -'d or -èd right in the text.

Following the plot of "Richard II", this play finds the usurper Bolingbroke, now King Henry IV, surrounded by enemies. In the beginning, Henry IV has a facedown with his former allies, Northumberland, Worcester and Hotspurs. They even regret having helped Bolingbroke to the throne. So, instead of going ahead with the king's plans for a new Crusade in the Middle East, Henry and his remaining allies have to face civil war. Due to the illegal way in which he acquired the crown, Henry feels insecure in the throne. Moreover, he has an other poignant source of worries: his eldest son and heir, Prince Hal, is not exactly a model of a young man. Instead of showing an interest in State affairs, he spends his time with a band of friends, led by the ineffable and immensely comic Sir John Falstaff. These rogues drink and womanize too much, but that wouldn't be much of a problem if they didn't assault travellers and commit other sort of criminal activities. King Henry IV scolds Hal for this behavior just when they have a war going on. Hal decides to mend his ways and join his father. Meanwhile, Falstaff is in charge of getting new recruits, but the quality of the latter suffers much when the fat rogue takes bribes from the best in order to escape service. Finally, Henry's party achieves an important (though not definitive) victory and Hal gains his father's respect, among other things, by saving him from a wound. But as they say, stay tuned, for this story continues in the second part.

Note that the major character in this and the next play is Falstaff himself, a man of undoubtedly bad behavior, but impossible not to like. Falstaff incarnates the Dyonisiac impulse, the joys of the flesh, and a free spirit devoid of any lust for power or glory. While the warrior Hotspur uplifts death and glory, Falstaff asks for more life. For his part, Hal has discovered the adrenaline of war and power and his character is about to change.

If you want a scholarly edition of the play, this is the one: the introduction is an extended and brilliant essay on the play; the text is clearly presented, and the commentary full and useful; and the book itself is attractive and easy to use. It is perfect for teachers, grad. students, advanced undergraduates, and actors and directors involved with the play.

I am a youth pastor at a Calvary Chapel and I want to teach the students about the Kingdom of God. So I pulled out the book of Mark and I am teaching through the entire book as every good Calvary Chapel pastor would. I have a few commentaries and I used them to do the introduction. I then looked into my book collection to see what else I could find that would be helpful - I found your book I got a while back. I pulled out a treasure chest of knowledge and wit in your book.

As I prepare for the next section, it is now unnecessary to open all of the other commentaries I have, so it has come down to using yours, which uses a plethora of resources to bring the Word of God alive. The humor in your writing style perfectly fits my teaching style and it is a joy to "listen" to you speak these words to me as I read them. Thanks Scott!

I have been a pastor for over 18 years now and have had to wade through many a commentary. I can tell you that this one won't bog you down! It's clear and concise, yet deep, thoughtful and practical. If you have read any of Scott's other books you know he is a gifted writer. But now you can discover his greatest gift, teaching God's Word! You can tell that Scott Pinzon has really done his homework as explores the Gospel text. And in his "what others say" sections he tells you what many of the greatest Pastors and commentators have said about various passages. If your looking for a commentary that gets to the point yet stimulates your thinking, this is it. Where was this book when I was a youth pastor!?

Despite its rather silly title, I've never had so much fun reading a commentary! I can't vouch for any of the other titles in this series (in fact, the others I've seen were pretty awful), but this one rises from the clichéd ashes of populist Bible books and delivers. Pinzon presents complex concepts with a witty one-two punch that makes his writing as enjoyable to read as a novel. Not only a good introduction to the Bible, but a refreshing review for those of us whose Bibles have gathered a little dust. I've been reading it to my kids on the long drive to church. Even when I think they're sleeping, they always wake up to answer the questions at the end of the chapter. (This book'll get to you, even comatose.) Lively and informative.

I went to theological seminary 25 years ago. One of the reasons I went to seminary was to learn how to use the tools for studying the Bible. I took Greek and Hebrew and read lots of books with dense type. It wasn't easy for me but I am glad I spent the three years it took to acquire the tools.

However, I recognize that most Christians, even if they were so inclinded, can afford neither the time nor the expense of Seminary. But they are interested in studying and knowing more about the Bible. This book on the Gospel of Mark will be helpful to such people. Persons who have never owned a commentary on an individual book of the Bible will find a wealth of information about the history, language and culture of the New Testament that will enable them to better understand the teachings of Jesus.

The combination of good biblical scholarship along with the helpful tools, outstanding quotes and fresh, humorous writing makes this book very readable and accessible as a Bible Study resource.

Maybe We Are Flamingos is an adorable picture book about two baby flamingos who are troubled by the way they look and wonder if they're in the right flock.

When baby flamingos Flora and Fernando are born, they're surprised to see that, while all the other flamingos are pink, they are white. How could this be? To make matters worse, they later turn grey. Is something wrong with them? Why aren't they pink like the other beautiful flamingos around them?

Full of fear at what the possible answer might be, they decide to ask their mom.

To their delight, they find out that it's only a matter of time before they'll turn pink like the others, and that looking the way they do now is completely natural.

Later, they also learn why flamingos are pink, making this book not only entertaining but educational as well.

In sum, this is a delightful and deftly written picture book that young children ages 3 and up will love to listen to again and again. Thurman chose each word in the story carefully, the prose flows so well. Collier's illustrations are a splash of color on the pages, transporting the reader to a warm, tropical place. Maybe We Are Flamingos would make a beautiful gift to any young child and is a sweet book I'd highly recommend to add to your child's bookshelf.

If you are looking for a charming, delightful story for your youngster, then you'll find it in "Maybe We Are Flamingos".

Flora and Fernando are concerned because they don't look like the rest of their flock. Maybe they really aren't pink flamingos after all. But some thoughtful words from Mum assure them they will turn pink in about a year and stay pink because of the food they eat--which leaves these young birds much relieved and happy enough to draw a few pictures of what they might look like if they ate pineapples and watermelons.

Thurman has created a wonderful and humorous story with "Maybe We Are Flamingos". Kids will love reading how Flora and Fernando go from scared and unsure to happy and silly. Thurman's gift of imagination shines through brilliantly when Flora and Fernando draw pictures of what they might look like if their diets were a bit different.

Kudos go out to Kevin Scott Collier for bringing this charming story to life with his beautiful illustrations. I was already a fan of Collier's work prior to this book, and he doesn't disappoint the reader this time around either.

My daughters, ages 6 and 4, absolutely loved "Maybe We Are Flamingos" and have asked for it to be read over and over again. They've also had great fun making up their own stories to match the illustrations--a true sign that this book has touched their hearts.

"Maybe We Are Flamingos" is a must have for every young reader!

Flora and Fernando are two baby flamingos. They are born a beautiful fluffy white. As they grow up they turn gray. They worry, we aren't pink like everyone else, are we really flamingos? Follow them on their hilarious adventure as they learn how flamingos get their color and wonder what they would look like if things were different.

"Maybe We Are Flamingos" is easy to read and understand. Sue Thurman is a gifted storyteller. She weaves facts about flamingos into a truly enjoyable story. Kevin Collier's artistic skill makes the words come to life. You know exactly how little Flora and Fernando feel and see what great imaginations these two baby flamingos have.

This is one of those stories your children or grandchildren will beg you to read over and over. This will be a treasured addition to any child's library.

"Maybe We Are Flamingos" is a fascinating, brightly colored children's picture book written by Sue Thurman and illustrated by Kevin Scott Collier. This book provides entertainment, humor and education- -three main ingredients in the best children's picture books. Two flamingos, Flora and Fernando, hatch from their eggs, soon to discover that "...their soft white feathers made them look like fuzzy snowballs." Noticing that the other flamingos are pink, they begin to worry that maybe they aren't flamingos. When their feathers turn gray, they worry even more. Finally, they anxiously ask their mother about it, and she explains to them that it "takes flamingos a year or more to turn pink" and that the color change results from the foods they eat. From there, the reader learns factual information about flamingo foods and is treated to some really great giggles as the baby flamingos imagine themselves looking like anything they might decide to eat, including whole pizza pies, cheeseburgers on buns, and tacos. This book is perfect for reading aloud to children.

I read Maybe We Are Flamingos to my in-home daycare children (ages 4-8) and they loved this story! I heard lots of giggles when Flora and Fernando speculated about what they might look like if they ate only certain foods. The illustrations are adorable! As a follow-up activity I had the children use a coloring page of a flamingo to make it look like it might if it ate only their favorite food. We had a strawberry flamingo, a watermelon flamingo, pepperoni pizza flamingo, among others. We also practiced standing on one leg to see who could hold the pose the longest. I will incorporate this book into my lesson plans for next year when we learn about letter "F". Not only is this story amusing, it's informative and has an important, but subtle message.

All the information about his character is completely true, he really is an inspirational person. Growing up in a huge suburban high school with him, it really was a very competitive atmosphere. Everyone seemed to love him because he was one of the brightest (one of the highest GPAs of his class, scholar athlete and best athlete in the school) along with being one of the most modest, down to early people ever. If someone had the will to succeed it is him. I recommend this book to anyone overcoming obstacles, down on their luck, athletes and basically anyone because it is the type of book that you can not put down.

This really is a miracle!!!

After finding out that Adam Taliaferro couldnt walk again ever. His father and mother urged him to push on. His spirits were high always no matter what. This is a triumphant story about courage and self-determination and a little help from some up above

This is a Great Book

This book is good for anyone whether you are a football fan or not. I personally am a football fan, and I would especially recommend this book for those football fans out there. This book is inspirational and well documented. It is also at a good price now, and it is a quick read.

All too often in today's world of youth sports; parents, coaches and players miss the meaning of sportsmanship. Having been involved in youth sports for 14 years, I have witnessed over bearing parents and tenacious coaches. I suggest they keep a copy of "Miracle in the Making" in their equipment bags. This book highlights the true meaning of a parent/child relationship and a coach/player relationship. Adam is the definition of courage, kindness and strength. His family's support during his recovery is awe-inspiring. The writers did a terrific job of bringing me along on Adam's journey to recovery. I will be on the sidelines cheering; watching as Adam wins the biggest game of his life!

I read Sharon's book not long after I met her and was delighted and wowed to know someone who could write a book that kept me engaged from first to last page. The characters, with all their human strengths and faults, rope you in with their story of love, laughter and tears and leave you wanting more. Can't wait for Sharon Flesch's next book!

This book navigates the real world of real love. The setting and the writing are considerable bonuses, but the real power of the novel lies in its author's understanding of the depth, breadth, and sheer wonder of love.

This is truly a wonderful story of the Montana west and the hardships encountered by their residents. The story is romatic with good Christian values. Could hardly put it down. Would love to read a sequel to this wonderful story. Would recommend this book to all lovers.

This book was reminiscent of the way life used to be. It showed interesting relationships between people and yet portrayed high moral standards. My copy has been passed on to other family members that have greatly enjoyed it also.

"Sneaking Into Concerts" is very fun but I doubt ill be trying any of these methods. It is way off the standards of TicketSecrets.net but is was still worth the read for the entertainment value.

This is truly a Great Book,it combines seriousness and humor very well. The techniques that the professor shares with the readers really work!He drives home the fact that if this is a crime then why are there no victims? If you read the review from that feminist(I may not have spelled the word right, but I do spell useful things correctly)just remember that she is dead wrong and frankly, stupid. Thanks and enjoy!

Good clean sneakery!

Now we can all get in, ticket or no ticket. The professor teaches us by example how to get in to our favorite events. If you love sports or just events in general, "sold out" will never have the same meaning again. Scott writes with an irreverant wit, always asking, "Why shouldn't I be able to go in?" Hysterical and almost unbelievable. Even if you have no intention of trying his techniques yourself, live vicariously through Scott and his adventures and have some great laughs.

I love this guy. He puts it right out there about how customer service ought to be, and we all wish that everyone's customer service were as good as some of the shining examples he relates. We are assaulted at every turn by so many bad customer service experiences that we're grateful when someone even does an average job of what they're supposed to do, much less go above and beyond. We should all remember those basic keys to our business: know your customers and their needs and wants; know your product; know what your competitors are doing and how to beat them. Scott Gross goes beyond this with the "outrageous" part: be prepared to do something so extraordinary and unexpected for your customers that they can't help but tell others how great your service is. When was the last time you told all your friends about extraordinary customer service? I have stories from 10-20 years ago that I tell to this day because the service was so great. Do you? I've been fortunate enough to hear T. Scott Gross as a keynote speaker at a conference, and he's just as warm, thoughtful and encouraging in person as he is in his books. If you're in business or deal with the public, or even if you just want to have great family and friend relationships, you must have at least one of his books in your personal library.

A must-have in every business owner's toolkit

If more people read and implemented outstanding service, then we wouldn't be having all those 'siteAsucks.com' and 'siteBsucks.com' web sites.

This book targets the lifeline of any business - your customers -and talks about common sense - how to make them happy - so that they not only come back, but they also tell others!

The concept is very simple. But this is probably the only book I have ever found about delivering "outrageous" service.

I have myself implemented (long before reading this book, of course :-) what I call as "Not Technical Support - But FANATIC'nical Support" on my own site at WebmasterInABox.net

So, it was exciting to see an entire book dedicated to this topic. And in spite of knowing what brilliant customer service is, I had managed to brainstorm about 200 different ideas to provide "outrageous" service, before I had delved even 20 pages into the book.

A great buy. On my top 10 list.

Here's a customer service success and sometimes hilarious failure story book, packed with practical, real world ideas that really work that you'll really enjoy reading. Gross says great selling is a by-product of great service. He shares his hard-serve, soft-sell secrets and shows you how to make serving customers more fun and less frustrating once you decide to raise your customer service bar to Positively Outrageous Service.
