I really liked this book because the title made me want to read it. The title sounded scary and I just love scary things. This book dealt with a girl and someone calling and then hanging up.

Poetry that speaks to the wonder in the mundane

I first heard Brad Sachs through his poem ""A Boy in a Bed in the Dark" which was featured on the public radio program "The Writer's Almanac."
Like most of his poems, "A Boy in a Bed in the Dark" is about sadness, loss, beauty, and the everyday trials of life. Sachs, a psychiatrist or something by day, writers poetry that captures not only the magical but the mundane. He describes the things that make our normal, extraordinary lives worth living, but also finds the moments that we can't forget; the type of moments that are wont to crawl up inside our hearts and post a change of address to the local mailman. "A Boy in a Bed in the Dark" perfectly captures that memory so many of us have, the memory of something gone wrong, something we neglected, something that went to far. The sort of thing that haunts us in the lonely watches of the night, when sleep is distant and our sins all to near.
See, just thinking about Sachs makes me get all poetic.

This is a consistently amusing and diverting collection, good as a bedside book or a welcome entertainment while sunning yourself on your own deck. Author Sachs, a certified guy (his picture is on the cover), takes on a female point of view in recounting the sailing experiences of Irma and Ralph, her beer-guzzling husband. I like the riff on naming boats, from the Sin King to the Half Moon.

I bought the audio book in London because I thought it would be fun to listen while in the car ride home from the airport when we returned. The car was silent listening to the adventures of Grandfather and Roo. My daughter was 7 and loved it! She is 10 and still gets it out to listen on trips. She has taken it in to school for class quiet time and the classmates love it! It is an adorable tale that had us in stitches at every turn. Get all of "The Last ..." series by Harry Horse, but get this audio book! The British accented reading is the best way to experience the humor of this story.

I read this book over 10 yeqrs ago in 5th grade. I had read all the other books about Marv's friends (Peter & Veronica series, which are related to Amy & Laura) and at first I did find this book hard to get in to. I think I was older before I was able to finish this book. Marv is an inventor and his mind is always working, thinking of new inventions. HIs older sister is pretty but she's a witch. She is always screaming at poor Marv and he is constantly trying to please her. He bends over backwards. It is a funny book. It mentions Adolf Hitler a lot, as the story was set for that era; the 30's and 40's. THis story actually took place right before the Peter and Veronica series, so I recommend if you are going to read the series, the stories might make more sense if you start with Marv. I think it was the first book of the series, although the books arn't numbered in any order. If you liked Encyclopedia Brown, you'll enjoy Marv!

A TIMELESS WORK.

This work first came out in 1954. It is that edition that I am reviewing here. This 262 page volume contains several hundred prints and drawings, halftone reproductions, black and white of some of the best prints and drawings in the world. This collection was put together and edited by Paul J. Sachs and of course has been around for years, and is thankfully still in print, or at least, easily found. I must admit that this work hold special place for me, as it is the first "art book" I had access to as a child. I spent hours and hours pouring over the pictures and text. The old hardback copy I have now is getting pretty ragged, not unlike myself, but still gets a going over every time I go into one of my nostalgic moods. (I also have to admit, that in 1954 the nudes featured in this work were pretty heavy stuff for a ten year old boy..even better than National Geographic!)
The book is divided into several chapters, David and the Great Moderns of the Past, Cezanne and Post-Impressionism, The School of Paris, Matisse and the Fauves, Cubism, Surrealism, Expressionism and the Abstract Art in North Europe, Italy, England, Mexico and the United States. The works of approximately 115 artists are represented here. Sachs (more about him later) has made a short comment on each work. He, Sachs has included works that he felt were important, but fully admits that it is far beyond all inclusive. He has given us a brief history of each artist in the back of the book.
As a side note; the story of Paul J. Sachs himself is quite fascinating (it is not covered in this book) as he was one of the members involved in the "Albertina Affair," when the Archduke Alberecht of Hungry tried to sell off the entire collection of prints and drawings from under the Austrian Government's noses. This is probably the finest collection in the world. Fortunately (for Austria, I suppose), the plot was foiled, the art work nationalized, etc. etc. This would make a great story within itself.
Anyway, this work has brought a lot of joy to me over the years, starting when I was a very small boy. I realize there are many, many volumes of this ilk out there, and I am quite sure some of them are better. I do know that this particular volume certainly meant a lot to me, and still does. I cannot see how anyone with the slightest interest in art would not enjoy it and find it useful, even today. Recommend this one highly.

Nelly Sachs writes about the most painful subject the losses of the Shoah in a delicate and subtle way. She does not have the kind of complexity or dimension of her co- Nobel Prize winner Agnon, but she has a voice and a language truly her own.

The Ecumenical movement, which has greatly promoted mutual understanding and appreciation among Christian denominations, makes it possible, we believe, to speak of the Christian tradition, even if there are a variety of heritages in that tradition. We have felt an obligation to draw freely and widely on that tradition ourselves. We have called on the thought of all periods of church history and most major Christian denominational heritages in order to make our case. We also ground our argument in the Bible, which all Christians share. We rely, in particular, on one book of the Bible, Paul's First Letter to the Corrintians, for the heart of the message, which is that renewal movements and mainline churches must recognize their need for each other and accept each other's gifts. Paul illustrates his plea to that effect with the metaphor of the church as the body of Christ and urges the Corintians to act as if they are of one body. We think the church as a whole needs to take that message to heart today.
