The artwork, of course, is the main ingredient and it never disappoints. Alan Bean has a unique talent and tells the tale of going to the Moon in his drawings. Even without the accompanying words, it is easy to lose oneself in the moment. I think there is a certain 'realness' that the photos dont have and I do not know how to adequately explain why.
At any rate, this is a wonderful book and any space fan should not hesitate to pick it up. 08671305044112007-05-07An artist from the MoonThere are sometimes laments that we will never get a proper description of what it's really like to be in space until we send a poet. However, though NASA may not have sent a poet, it did send a painter. Al Bean had dabbled in the arts before and during his tenure as an astronaut, but when he retired he focused on becoming a painter and particularly on creating paintings that showed what it was really like to walk around on the surface of the Moon. This book contains many of those paintings.

The text, meanwhile, is yet another memoir by an Apollo astronaut, and if anything is rather on the terse side, with only brief bits leading up to the more extensive Apollo portion, and only a brief conclusion. It's interesting but doesn't stand out amongst the many other astronaut memoirs, except for the accompanying illustrations. Each chapter concludes with a dozen or so pages reproducing Bean's paintings, with Bean explaining the scene he was depicting and what he wanted to show. This makes this book a unique record of one man's trip to the Moon, and, I suppose, won't be matched until we actually do send a poet.08671305045442006-06-02Exquisite Paintings from the MoonFirst, let me say that Alan Bean is one of the most articulate of the Apollo Astronauts who walked on the Moon. In addition to listening to the painter himself about his collective series of truly unique "Paintings from the Moon", you owe it to yourself to purchase a copy of the DVD, "For All Mankind". That DVD is reviewed elsewhere on this site, but it and this particular book full of Mr. Bean's paintings will likely become the most treasured additions to your collection of manned spaceflight memorabilia.

I also found the dramatic characterization of Alan Bean, and the exploits his Apollo 12 crewmates, depicted in Tom Hank's 1998 HBO miniseries "From the Earth To The Moon" to be one of the most entertaining espisodes of that facinating and truly outstanding TV production first telecast in 1998. This book was published in the same year and the two works complement each other very well, upstaging most of the other spaceflight documentaries which are somewhat lacking in humanistic content.

We are very fortunate to have had at least one Astronaut with additional interests other than just pure science and aerospace engineering, to share his extraordinary experiences while serving as a key member of the Apollo program.

The one and only thing missing from my copy of this book is Al Bean's personal autograph!08671305045552005-09-15Reviewing Hero'sIf you have a strong interest in Space travel, and always wanted to talk to the Astronauts that went to the moon to ask them how it felt or what they were thinking as they walked on a planet other then earth, this is the book that will bring you to a time that has never been repeated. A time when man walked on the moon.

Mr. Bean's use of his fantastic artwork to describe a part of his life when he was a member of the elite few, chosen by NASA, to become the first to walk on the moon, is the closest you will get to actually being there.

It is a book of Mr. Beans paintings but also a trip thru the minds of some of our first Astronauts. If how space travel began interests you at all, I strongly recommend obtaining this book. It's a must have to any collector of Space Memorabilia.08671305045012003-03-16He's the best!If you want to experience the moon through the eyes of an artist and an astronaut this book is for you! It is inspiring and educational. Highly recommeded!Lunar missions chronicled in paintings by Apollo 12 astronaut Captain Alan Bean. When NASA sent the crew of Apollo 12 to the moon, they may not have realized that they were giving an artist the vision that would carry him through a lifetime of painting. The artist, of course, was astronaut Alan Bean, whose trip to the moon with pals Pete Conrad and Dick Gordon sunk so deeply into his brain that he's been trying to get it down on canvas ever since. He even mixes moon dust and bits of charred Apollo 12 heat shield into his paints to capture a bit of the Ocean of Storms in each image. The astronauts Bean paints are brave, exuberant, and all-American, right down to the reflections of Old Glory in their mirrored visors. His moon is surprisingly colorful and dreamlike, a magical place for jumping higher than you ever did before, racing around in the lunar rover, and swatting golf balls into orbit. Apollo: An Eyewitness Account, coauthored with space expert Andrew Chaikin, is filled with Bean's riveting stories and paintings, recording a long, successful career as an explorer-artist. He recreates the drama and brash enthusiasm of the Apollo program in bold strokes. --Therese Littleton 081541028XCarrying the Fire: An Astronaut's JourneysB000XJ5TPEIn the Shadow of the Moon0312199066The Last Man on the Moon: Astronaut Eugene Cernan and America's Race in Space031285918XDeke!: An AutobiographyB000V7O0DUMagnificent Desolation - Walking on the Moon (IMAX)13643Engineering44258011Specialty Stores283155Books585494General1104Artists, A-Z1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books1879General1876Painting1Arts & Photography1000Subjects283155Books13756General173515Engineering173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books227262Astrophysics & Space Science227260Astronomy173510Professional Science173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books13441Aeronautics & Astronautics13439Astronomy75Science1000Subjects283155Books13445Astrophysics & Space Science13439Astronomy75Science1000Subjects283155Books13857General75Science1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR2I4MDH0CPGF2QGreat Books about the Early US Space ProgramRO78MNX4K73NGFavorite Books1MYI92EI3UYEKAstronauts Say the Darnedest Things1JXJRHQYRPFLNSalame Space Best26H0B7DPQBZ97Space Books & DVDs3DKB6RQQX8AFSpace Flight Essentials2N1LY1QQ02DSTBooks About The Space Program (Mercury - Apollo)3IJMAOZ9S03MNTo the Moon and Back2JJHCTNEFIBVNActual books by actual astronautsVG9W6E0FUACDThe Epic of ApolloB0012SE7RQhttp://www.amazon.com/Artificial-Imagination/dp/B0012SE7RQ%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0012SE7RQ43216http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51I63PzO7ML._SL75_.jpg7558http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51I63PzO7ML._SL160_.jpg160124http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51I63PzO7ML.jpg500389Kalpanik S.Kindle EditionKindle BookEnglish399USD$3.99Center of Artificial Imagination, Inc.eBooks2008-01-07Center of Artificial Imagination, Inc.Center of Artificial Imagination, Inc.Artificial Imagination319USD$3.19100011ATVPDKIKX0DERhttp://www.amazon.com/gp/help/seller/home.html?seller=ATVPDKIKX0DERNewnewTOCVLA5NxWHXe3Vqkyx2hABPb2TQWujPq9CNH%2Fp7WjpGo%2BT1m%2FJYS0ZyT44JSdLGTA9ciAgirrHT8Y10lR5PMg%3D%3D319USD$3.19Usually ships in 24 hours5.0194B0012SE7RQ5232008-06-25An Absolute Joy to Read!!This is the story of a brilliant young man who seems to be always on the move, moving from one interesting city to the other.

At the beginning, the author leaves New Delhi for US, where he is awarded a fellowship to study at University of California, but he gets caught into culture shock, as well as an internal dilemma, seeking a deeper meaning of life. While he is most vulnerable, he manages to fall in love with one his student but is unable to express his feelings.

Then he seems to have gone through the roller coaster ride of the technology industry emerging as a winner, a successful technologist leading a group of innovators.

We end in beautiful San Diego, with a moving story about how the author and his family face the Inferno, the great wildfires of 2007.

I don't believe anyone has experienced living unless they have ventured around like the author has. It is in his narratives, his reaction to the challenges he faces and his observations of people and culture of various places that he truly shines.

It is my top read of the year!
B0012SE7RQ5332008-06-24Light reading yet thought proving, wonderful conversational style!Whether you ever wondered about meaning of it all, or you want to read something light amusing, or want to see places like Seattle, San Diego, and Nashville from the eyes of the writer, or vicariously live the life of a student at University of California, this book is for you!

This book combines elements from good humor, a memoir, a scenic travelogue, a touching love story, science fiction and philosophy.

The author, pretends to be an Artificial Imagination computer program simulating human creativity, describes the life/career journey of a modern nomad through the Hi Tech world of California and Washington (Settle). Kalpanik seems simultaneously incredibly thoughtful and serious and yet someone who has a carefree attitude towards life, someone who handle life as it happens!

It's a light reading, and yet thoughtful; funny yet serious; conversational yet literary!B0012SE7RQ4112008-06-24A funny memoir by a fine writer!
This book takes many life concepts expressed in different forms and combine them in a mishmash. He structures the 12 different personal essays, each highlighting a particular transitional period in his life or a specific experience in to a beautiful collage of experiences in this book very successfully. What a funny memoir!

Kalpanik S. is a fine writer with a lot to say about a lot of things and a unique way of making you laugh! I highly recommend her book.B0012SE7RQ5442008-06-22Refreshing, unexpected, humorous and meaningfulReKalpanik S. takes us through his arrival in USA as a student and subsequent travel to several places - San Francisco, Seattle, Nashville, and San Diego. In each places, he focuses on similar aspect of his life as a technologist and an immigrant - acceptance by local people, standing out as a ethnic minority and foreign born, life as a technology execuitve and family life. In addition, he covers local food, people, culture and sources of enjoyment, joy, and finally, and his quest for love and balance.

He adds so much meaning, passion and humor, he is so open with the readers that I felt like I was reading a private letter that someone would write only to their best friends.

The writing is refreshingly unexpected, humorous and meaningful. Great read!!
Imagine what a computer will imagine if it could. Supposedly written by an AI program mimicking human creativity, this humorous autobiography of an immigrant technologist describes his journey through USA--a journey which takes him from San Francisco to Seattle, Nashville and San Diego. The book starts with Kalpanik, an Executive in the Software industry moving from Silicon Valley to Seattle to work for Congo.com, a famous Ecommerce company led by a goofy CEO. We read one lively story after another about their lives in the Northwest. Our adventurer then takes an interesting detour through Nashville to finally land in San Diego where he gets caught in the infamous wild fires of 2007 but is still able to maintain his sense of humor! The story has more than 100 photographs complementing the stunning imagination with equally stunning imagery. Something magical happens within these pages, even if some details or concepts are far-fetched. At seven years old - so what?! And almost 20 years later I still say so what. This book inspired me to start writing my own books at such an early age because the story that played out in my head while reading this was so vivid and real I wanted to create that same vision. My younger sister soon snagged this book from me and she too read it many times over. I had to mask the whole book back together with tape and secure loose pages because it was used so much it fell apart. I still have my original copy of this but it looks like something found in an ancient riun so I just purchased another copy on Amazon. Trust me, this book is worth it. Growing up I loved horses and longed for a girl to admire. The romance is just right for the age group. There is adventure at every turn of the page. I am going to preserve my newest copy for the kids I hope to one day have. Buy yours before they are gone forever! You or your kids will read it over again and again.08234094305002006-07-26Make a sequel! This book is my favorite book ever! You need to read this book, It has Adventure, Danger, and Romance!!! Its such a good book. I picked this book up when I was 10. I loved it! Now im 13 and I still fall in love with it more and more every time I read it! Bill Wallice NEEDS to right a sequel to this book, I want to know what happens! Does David and Amanda get married or do they go on another adventure that comes in there lives!? What does Amanda say to Philip? What happens to Potlicker? Bill Wallice I need to know what happens! PLEASE make a sequel! and you need to read this book! If you read this book trust me you wont regret it!08234094305002006-04-11a truly fun and moving bookI read this book first when I was about 9 and have read it many, many times since. I even have a hankering to read it again right now and I'm 19 years old and in college! It's is a beautiful and subtle romance, but, even more than that, it is a journey of discovery. I really identified with Amanda's changed feeling towards a place because i experienced the same sort of "traumatic" move and uprooting from what i was used to. I think that this book is not only a good read for those who are younger than 12 but also for anyone who loves a fun, happy, well told tale that puts life in a good light. My mother read it more than once and loved it as well. This book is for the young and romantic at heart.08234094305112005-01-11fascinating I was eight when I first grabbed this book in my schools library. 11 years later I'm still wishing to go back and read this book in between my Dragonlance novels. I think that in itself is a testement to how fantastic Buffalo Gal is. Once you've read it, age doesn't matter. It is a classic that stays with you always.08234094305002003-05-15Really Awesome BookIf you like the Wild West, adventure, romance, or all three, this is the book to read. I read my first copy so many times it's falling apart. I had to go buy a new one! It has to be my favorite book in the world. Read it once and you're hooked for life. Take my word and buy it. Belive me-- you won't regret you did.Fifteen-year-old Amanda's refined life in early twentieth-century San Francisco is disrupted when she grudgingly accompanies her mother to the Oklahoma Territory on a crusade to save the buffalo.141694110XDanger on Panther Peak0671530364True Friends: True Friends0671011251NEVER SAY QUIT (PROMOTION)0671869701The Biggest Klutz in Fifth Grade0671039687The Flying Flea, Callie and Me170063General2786Ages 9-124Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books16254411General2966Literature4Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books713072011General AAS4Children's Books1000Subjects283155Books17437Historical Fiction17433History & Historical Fiction28Teens1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books673423011Ages 9-12673420011Age Range (age_range)388186011Refinements283155Books11IJ5A6QEY0EJFiction Books and Horse Books0838513816http://www.amazon.com/Clinical-Anesthesiology-G-Edward-Morgan/dp/0838513816%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D08385138161435743http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41B2BQK90JL._SL75_.jpg7554http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41B2BQK90JL._SL160_.jpg160115http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41B2BQK90JL.jpg475340G. It is easy to read, and the highlights and charts made memorization easy. It was easier to read then Baby Barash, as a beginner.08385138165002008-04-17CRNA resident must haveI have to agree with the other 5 star writers. Pound for pound (makes a difference in your backpack) this book is hard to beat. I find it more complete than Secrets of Anesthesia, and more user friendly than Miller. If you want to learn 100 ways to not do something, and read conflicting studies then go for Miller, otherwise "M & M" is king. Besides, I challenge anyone to bring Barash or Miller into the OR with them for a quick reference... 08385138165662007-06-05The best all-around book for residents and practitioners.I used the third edition of this book for my writtens and orals. I am fellowed in cardiothoracic anesthesia, and boarded in pain medicine. It is more than comprehensive enough for everday practice, and it is more than enough to get you through the written boards, and will certainly help with the orals. Miller, Barash (is there an etc to these two choices?) are much more comprehensive, but they are highly dependent upon the writers of each chapter: while some are great reading, others ramble on incessantly about studies which show effects on giant squid axons, or how 3-74% of rats will react when their tails are clamped. And who can forget the effects of isoflurane on the livers of salamanders? Morgan-Mikhail is put together logically, it is highly readable, and it is extremely affordable, and while it won't give you every answer, it's a good start.08385138164442006-03-19Clinical AnesthesiologyIt is a good basic book that covers the essentilas very clearly in not too long chapters. It is a good entry level book for doctors during their first year of residence in anesthesia.
Also for the doctor that needs to update his knowledge.

My personal experience and the reason for buying the book was that I after 5 years i neuroanesthesia needed an update prior to a period as an anesthesiologist in a not specialised department. In this way the book served its purpose well. This popular book combines succinct, clinically oriented coverage of the basic science underlying anesthesiology with case studies illustrating important practical issues.0443068011Basics of Anesthesia: with Evolve Website (Stoelting, Basics of Anesthesia: with Evolve Website)0781754690Pharmacology and Physiology in Anesthetic Practice078174332XAnesthesiologist's Manual of Surgical Procedures1560536128Anesthesia Secrets: with STUDENT CONSULT Access (Secrets)0781757452Clinical Anesthesia (Clinical Anesthesia ( Barash))713421011General AAS225828Internal Medicine13996Medicine1000Subjects283155Books14219Medical & Surgical14191Nursing13996Medicine1000Subjects283155Books14307Anesthesiology225827Specialties13996Medicine1000Subjects283155Books14183General13996Medicine1000Subjects283155Books227686Anesthesiology227199Surgery265542Medicine173514Medical173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books227654Medical & Surgical227640Nursing173514Medical173507Professional & Technical1000Subjects283155Books408268General21Reference1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books0471320498http://www.amazon.com/Dearest-Ones-True-World-Story/dp/0471320498%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D0471320498984814http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51C47F1CWML._SL75_.jpg7550http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51C47F1CWML._SL160_.jpg160106http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51C47F1CWML.jpg475315Rosemary NorwalkHardcover940.5481739780471320494980471320498EnglishEnglishEnglish9062495USD$24.95Wiley1288Book1999-02-05WileyWileyDearest Ones: A True World War II Love Story131664600USD$6.0052USD$0.522495USD$24.9543740005.019404713204985112008-04-27American in England in WWIIThis book is the journal of Rosemary Langheldt who left her job and home in San Francisco to serve with the Red Cross in London and then Germany. The story is told through letters home and journal entries, and both are highly informative and well written missives. Mrs. Norwalk recreates what it was like to live in England during the last year of the war. She is an empathetic observer of the many tens of thousands of men (boys) who stop briefly at her Clubmobile for a donut and a cup of coffee after disembarking in England and re-embarking for the fight on the Continent. Once Rosemary is transferred to Germany, she sees firsthand the near destruction of many German cities. Her writings are true to the time: these people were our enemies a short time ago and they tried to kill the boys who I helped serve. It also offers an honest appraisal of the Occupation where the black market made many Americans rich. This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to know about life in England after the Allied landings in June 1944 and the early days of the occupation in Germany.04713204985442007-05-25Very well-written diaryI picked up "Dearest Ones" in a discount store and didn't expect much. There's a certain sameness to the World War II diaries of young women: young woman from small town bucks convention, kisses parents good-bye, and runs off to get liberated. She has some very mild adventures, makes a lot of friends, says "gee golly whiz" a lot, and swans on home at the end of the book. A postscript informs us that she settled down with a man named Bob or Hank or Earl, of whom we heard absolutely nothing in the course of the book except for a few mentions of "letters from So-and-So in the South Pacific," and is living somewhere in the midwest near her three grown children.

Boy, was I surprised, and pleasantly so. Perhaps it helps that Rosemary Langheldt was older, in her mid-twenties, and already a career woman when she applied to join the Red Cross overseas. It also helps that she seems to have been a very curious and thoughtful person. As other reviews have mentioned, she takes notice not only of the glitz and fun of work abroad, but of Britain's sometimes stifling class distinctions, American racial prejudice, and the difficult moral compromises involved in the occupation of Germany. There is also plenty of romance, fun, and gee-golly-whiz adventure, but one never gets the sense that Rosemary lost track of her primary reasons for being in the Red Cross or saw her job as a mere means of adventure. Rather, she was there to work and the adventure happened along the way.

She was keenly interested in other people, making this book a pleasure to read-- it can be incredibly frustrating to read a diary when the only "character" the diarist is able to make three-dimensional is the diarist herself. She had a skill for interacting with people (I get the sense that I would never in a million years have been able to handle her job) and trying to understand them, and that curiosity and interest in humanity permeates the whole book. (I also feel compelled to mention, as a reader, that I really appreciated the narrative cohesiveness of this book. If someone is introduced, then they will be around until a reason for their departure is given. A lot of diaries suffer from people and events appearing, disappearing, reappearing, necessitating either a lot of head-scratching or awkward footnotes. This book doesn't have that problem. Rosemary was a really excellent correspondent.) This is really a stellar example of the genre, probably one of the best I've read.04713204985222005-05-27Useful social commentary concerning World War IIRosemary Norwalk left ardent swains and professional position to become a "doughnut dolly" with the American Red Cross. This University of California graduate and San Francisco native brings a disciplined eye to the social climate and
the broad spectrum of Americans thrown together by World War II. Following training in Washington, D.C. where she had to be restrained from sitting in the back of the bus, to commentary on the bravery of the ordinary Londoner under the buzz bombs, to experiences managing the large operation at a major port, she is insightful and forthright. Her many letters home are tied together with good historical notes on military operations and progress of the war. Mistitled a love story, it is instead a story of women who dared to step up and take on great responsibility for providing troop support both departing and returning through Britain. An example: A new"girl" arrives and one of the current Red Cross "girls" rushes to Rosemary with misgivings over her attitude and different looks. " The new girl announces: I'm Lil...I'm a Jew and I'm from Brooklyn and I don't like to take orders.' It was a challenge, not a greeting. I took a deep breath in the silence, then stuck out my hand and smiled. I hoped cordially. 'Welcome, Lil. I'm a gentile, I'm from San Francisco, and,' I groped for the right words, 'I don't like to give orders, so we ought to get along fine.' "04713204985332003-08-24Thank You Rosie !This is a wonderful book that I enjoyed the entire time I was reading it. It is one of those treasures of American history that should be read by anyone interested in WWII history. It is valuable look at the war from the perspective of an American Red Cross volunteer stationed in England. Not a nurse, as the author points out as the usual assumption, but one of those moral boosting "doughnut dollies" that sometimes were the last friendly female face a soldier would see before embarking for the battlefields of Europe.
Mrs. Norwalk was a wonderfully skilled writer at the time she wrote the letters and journal entries that make up the book. And the book is equally well crafted and edited, giving a detailed look at the work of the Red Cross workers on the docks of Southampton, England, their everyday lives and yes romances as the subtitle implies. It also includes personal photographs taken at the time.
An interesting item on page 99 is a list that explains the code used by the Red Cross to communicate the number of ships arriving or leaving, their sailing dates, and the number of soldiers to expect so they would be prepared and have enough volunteers, coffee, and doughnuts for them.
My sincerest thanks to Mrs. Norwalk (now deceased)for sharing this personal history with us, it reminds me very much of the letters my father wrote my mother during WWII that I have published into a book entitled: All My Love, Forever: Letters Home From A WWII Citizen Soldier. - Dale Lane04713204985442002-08-28Wonderful Record of WWIII came across this book at a local bookstore and thought it was a very touching and well-written account of love during wartime. As the author lived in my area, I was able to meet her and have her sign my copy. I'm so glad I did as she passed away August 22, 2002. What a great keepsake for her family and a wonderful book for the rest of us. So if you've been meaning to write your memoirs, don't put it off! It may not ever be listed on Amazon but it would probably mean a lot to your loved ones.Dearest Ones, Mom and Dad, I can't thank you enough for your understanding and support of my decision to join the Red Cross. So many think I'm crazy to volunteer, but you understand and I'll always be grateful. Wherever they send me, every day is bound to be challenging, but don't worry. I'll write as often as possible to share this experience as we've always shared others . . .
So begins the true-life adventure that takes twenty-five-year-old Rosemary Langheldt from her home in San Francisco to wartime England to serve as an American Red Cross volunteer. In richly detailed and beautifully crafted letters home to her "dearest ones," punctuated with journal entries and official missives, she vividly captures the heady mix of terror, adventure, and loss of World War II.
In wartime London, she lives bravely with the terror of dodging Hitler's devious buzz bombs. Rosie spends exhausting days and nights sending off troops to battle and greeting hospital ships filled with the wounded from the front. And she shivers through numbing winter nights in cold drafty rooms, savoring the brief blast of heat afforded by a sixpence or two in the heater.
Through Rosie's journals and letters emerge countless unforgettable scenes: Troops crooning "White Christmas" on the piers as they line up on the gangplanks of ships destined for the Allied Front. A child clutching a teddy bear, fast asleep on a cot deep in the London Underground to avoid the constant bombings. An Edith Piaf performance in liberated Paris. And tea with the King and Queen of England in Buckingham Palace. To read this book is to share with the independent-minded women of the American Red Cross the feverish celebrations of soldiers on leave. Deflecting the advances of GIs of every stripe, but caught up in the romantic excitement of the times, Rosie and her friends meet and fall in love with their future husbands and make plans for life after the war. Alive with the exuberance of a young woman discovering herself, finding love, and making her own contribution to one of the greatest efforts of our times, Dearest Ones is at once an exquisite tale of love's discovery and a poignant evocation of patriotism and heroism in the shadow of war.
The great paradox of war is that, from my tiny and personal perspective, I've never had a more fulfilling (from the standpoint of being useful) or exciting period in my life. I wouldn't be anywhere else, given the choice. —Rosemary Langheldt, August 7, 1945, Southampton, England.
Today I realized again how much I've loved this whole experience since the day I left home—all the funny, terrible, exciting, frustrating, heart-breaking moments. And how much I've learned from my crew—all those girls who put careers and normal life on hold to volunteer for ARC overseas duty. And from the men—the Army, Navy, and our special guys, the GIs. I've learned so much from them all. I'm ready to land now and what a wonderful passage it's been—all two years of it. —Rosemary Langheldt, April 21, 1946, Aboard the General Muir, U.S. Navy Troopship. This affecting memoir by a Red Cross volunteer eschews sentimental clichés about World War II. Letters to the author's parents in San Francisco, supplemented by entries from a journal in which she recorded material she feared would disturb either them or the censors, relay Rosemary Norwalk's experiences in England during the war's final year and for a few months in Germany after it ended. The Red Cross "girls" served doughnuts and coffee to soldiers disembarking from or boarding ships to the European front, but the mundane nature of their work didn't prevent sharp observers like Rosemary from grasping how this bitter, global conflict was indelibly marking her generation. The author's youthful prose is no more than serviceable in her letters and at times in the journals even self-conscious, but her insights are impressive. Thumbnail portraits of her Red Cross buddies are vivid and perceptive; her political maturity shows in biting remarks about average Germans' willed blindness to the horrors of the Holocaust--and, much more impressive for a young woman on the winning side, in her acknowledgment that many Americans probably would have done the same. Her romance with the army captain she eventually married was similarly grown-up (he had an estranged wife and a young child), and readers will root for their happy ending. --Wendy Smith B0017I0GTEBeneath a Marble Sky039333306XThe Zookeeper's Wife: A War Story0807070718Rena's Promise1411627229Eagles Over BerlinB001F7AXHMMemo to the President Elect: How We Can Restore America's Reputation and Leadership2393General2376Historical2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books886496General465244Military2396Leaders & Notable People2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books713045011General AAS465244Military2396Leaders & Notable People2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2423Medical2419Professionals & Academics2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2424Military & Spies2419Professionals & Academics2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2445Women2437Specific Groups2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books2375General2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books713038011General AAS2Biographies & Memoirs1000Subjects283155Books4953General4935Europe9History1000Subjects283155Books15812151Europe5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books465324Personal Narratives5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books465308General5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books713322011General AAS5031World War II5011Military9History1000Subjects283155Books713290011General AAS9History1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155Books1561840467http://www.amazon.com/Enochian-World-Aleister-Crowley-Magick/dp/1561840467%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3D15618404676565921Aleister CrowleyChristopher S. But Hyatt & DuQuette's little gem, first published in 1991, is simply the best: nothing else even comes close.

Especially if you are new to the system, _Enochian World of Aleister Crowley_ covers every base accurately and lucidly. The authors' techniques go straight to the heart of the work without cutting vital corners: no elaborate tools, preparations, or temple set-ups are required.

I have successfully (and quickly!) taught Enochian magick to individuals with no prior occult background - in either theory or practice - using only this volume as an introductory text; it practically teaches itself. And once the gates of the system open via _Enochian World_, every other volume, from the clearest to the most obscure, becomes comprehensible.

In this reviewer's opinion, Enochian magick is - remarkably - not only the most powerful occult methodology accessible to the average person but also the easiest. Many who initially viewed similar claims with well-deserved cynicism have had their perspective shifted by 180 degrees after trying the system for themselves. This book opens the Enochian path to anyone who (1) can attentively read it and (2) possesses a bare modicum of will-power. It is an authentic classic!15618404673232007-08-17user friendlyYou can understand Enochian magick and start to use it right away. THis book takes the user by the hand and teaches how to do it. If you don't know how to do Enochigan ritual then get started right now. IF you can handle Lon's arrogants you will enjoy this book.15618404675452005-10-24A nice little bookI learned more about the Enochian system of magick in 5 hours of reading than I had in weeks of checking out other sources. This is an explanation of Crowley's instructional piece on Enochia, with instructions on colouring the tablets and incorperating enochian elements into sex magick. My only complaint is that it is too brief. Read it alongside The Tarot of Ceremonial Magick, The Vision & The Voice and you'll have a veryt thorough understanding of this powerful and REAL system. 15618404675782005-03-04Don't judge this book by it's... well you know...The title initially put me off as I thought that it was probably a strange little side adventure that had little to do with the Enochian system. BOY WAS I WRONG! This is a WONDERFUL book about the enochian system complete with color plates of the spirit tables!

Even if you have other books on enochian, you should still have this text! It is easy enough to understand for the first-timer yet packed with so much information that even the advanced practitioner will find use in it!1561840467512162004-12-13Addressing the "negative" reviewWell, here we go again. The easy task of "demonizing Crowley". Its funny how so many like to comment on Crowley and the "bad" karma he incurred, yet how many of those who comment knew him? How many who disparage his methods actually practiced them? Only one that has seriously studied Crowley for years can "cast the first stone". All the rest are speculators who project their subconscious fears onto someone they did not know. Each person blazes their own path and if I listened to people such as the one who wrote the "one star" review then I would still be a Catholic zombie. Love is the Law Love under Will. Do What Thou Wilt Shall be the whole of the LAW! HA, HA, HA! Many consider Enochiana the most powerful and least understood system of Western Occult practice. This book makes it truly accessible and easy to understand. Crowley's work was the launching pad for all that followed. Originally published in 1912, it rent the veil of the Inner Order of the Golden Dawn and revealed its most precious jewel for all to see. And now, for the first time, the reader is provided with instructions that bridge the gap between the material and spiritual worlds by integrating Enochiana with Sex Magick. Mr. DuQuette and Dr. Hyatt bring over forty years of practical experience in the field to show you how to start using this powerful system right now. It also includes an Enochian dictionary.1561840483Aleister Crowley's Illustrated Goetia: Sexual Evocation0877285160Book of Lies0877286868The Holy Books of Thelema1578633087The Book of the Law/Liber Al Vel Legis0877286701777 And Other Qabalistic Writings of Aleister Crowley12667General12621New Age22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books12710Magic12689Occult22Religion & Spirituality1000Subjects283155Books394181011Hardcover394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksB0006S47H8http://www.amazon.com/Fit-happens-any-age/dp/B0006S47H8%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0006S47H8Michael S PierronUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishDream Big]194Book2002Dream Big]Dream Big]Fit happens ... at any age0000005.0194B0006S47H85002003-02-22Game Plan for LifeEasy Reading, and the message gets through. Mr. Peirron is able to make the sometimes very confusing world of fitness, understandable, usable and humorous. From his "TNT" principles, psychological motivation, and real life experiences (he says he is a former fat guy), every page of this book has something to offer. Of the fitness books that I've read, Fit Happens ranks very high. Not from a technical standpoint, but on how user friendly it is. As a newly natural black beauty - I was still struggling with others perecptions of me and my "new" (e.g. natural hair). And of course - I was struggling with my own perceptions of beauty as well. This book allowed me to finally see that our hair is a unique source of pride that needs to be flaunted - not "fixed". Something shifted for me when I read this book, and I finally was able to own not only my new hairstyle (a budding 'fro) but to love my hair in its natural, uninhibited glory. Black women, regardless of our hair texture - straight, wavy, curly, kinky, nappy - we are all so wonderfully beautiful! Hallelujah - I FEEL SO FREE TO BE ME! This book is a must read - share it with every black woman you know - and encourage them to teach our children and our men how to live a life that says "black is beautiful". Spread the knowledge to people of other cultures as well! God bless!07567698255222007-08-11BravoExcellent book about black hair and black culture. Would recommend it to anyone wanting to know more about both and how they relate to the "American" ideal.07567698255552007-07-04A Must-Read for Black Women EverywhereI've recently made the decision to go natural and as I did, I pondered, "Why do I have to 'decide' to be the way I naturally am?" It was then that I realized how unfortunate it was that black women, more than half, find their "naturalness" to be unattractive. I myself have gone through hair extensions, braids, and the dreaded relaxer that has damaged my hair and scalp for years. Now I wonder what it was all for. I wasn't being true to who I was.

This book helped be to know something that I should have already known: my hair. The history of black hair is one that is very interesting and telling. I learned more about my hair in this book than I have ever learned, even from members of my own family. There is also a sense of confidence one gets from reading books like these. I am letting all of my friends and family read it as well.

You will not be disappointed in your purchase.07567698254242007-01-09A beginning...This book is great begining for people that are redescovering themselfes aftermaking the decision or are trying to decide wheter go natural or not. It helps you to understand how we got here , how black beauty is not well accepted and why. It make you wonder, questionning yourself and others, and in my case keep learning.07567698255452006-11-18Very informativeIf you don't already know, this book is definitely worth the time that it takes to read. The book goes into detail about the history of Black hair. Prior to slavery, Africans took pride in their hair. The intricate braid designs date back to that time. It wasn't until after the slave trade that hair straightening became common. Also, it's a little known black history fact that Annie Tumbo Malone was the first black woman entrepeneur to market black hair products. Tom has such BIG HEART and through this book he provides a wonderful road map on how managers and leaders can begin to create more high performance work teams. 09660874025112007-12-03Relational Guide to High-Performance In this three-part relational guide for the development of "a performance-focused, feedback-rich organization", consultant Tom Crane offers the reader his insights on three aspects of transformational coaching; the model, the coach, and the culture. The unifying theme, the heart drives relationships, and relationships drive performance, is evidenced by the title of the book and the statement, "If you chose to incorporate any of the practices described, pay attention to how your relationships are enriched and your results are enhanced."

The 'model' part is a three-phase methodology for coaching; starting with connecting, preparing, and establishing expectations (the Foundation); progressing into exploring and issues identification (the Learning Loop); continuing with options, commitment, and follow-up (Forwarding The Action.) The 'coach' element is an introspective piece including communications and style. The 'culture' part covers both `what it is' and seven principles for creating the change.

From reading the book, it is easy to see that Crane believes in intrinsic motivation and in people. He uses a most wonderful term, "positive regard," for how a coach or leader might look upon those they work with. I could not agree more with this sentiment. If you share this feeling, this is a book worth the read, as it gives wonderful guidance for how to bring out the best in people.

Dennis DeWilde, author of
"The Performance Connection"
09660874025002007-08-28Awesomely helpful book on coaching! This will become one of your go-to books re: the coaching process. It is pretty dry though. If you want to learn about coaching, take an accredited coaching certification program. I did, and this was one of our required reads. It happened to be my least favorite and gave me very little practical information to use during a coaching session. If you want to read an inspiring, empowering book, read Breaking the Rules by Kurt Wright.09660874025232005-09-28A sound and practical coaching methodTom Crane goes to the true essence of coaching. He developed a comprehensive coaching method to transform knowledge into performance and action into results. A must read not only for coaches, but also for managers and leaders. This "Revised Edition" reflects feedback from hundreds of readers and coaching workshop participants over the last several years. The new revised process model is more powerful and user-friendly than ever, and serves as a guide for establishing coaching relationships as well as HOW TO conduct the actual coaching conversation.
The premise of this book is simple: “As coaching becomes a predominant cultural practice…it will create a performance-focused, feedback-rich organization capable of creating and sustaining a competitive advantage.” This is the business case for coaching in today’s real world.
"The Heart of Coaching" introduces Transformational Coaching – a very powerful process for communicating performance feedback. It is a fundamentally different way of approaching how we work with others. It creates egalitarian, mutually supportive, high-trust relationships between people (Boss, Peers, and Direct Reports) that shifts from the traditional boss/subordinate/competitor roles to a partnership. “BOSSES" becoming "COACHES" forms the foundation for coaching to flow 360° throughout the culture.
Transformational Coaching is the requisite skill for today's leaders, managers, supervisors, and entire teams who choose to enhance their personal effectiveness and team performance.0891061983Co-Active Coaching, 2nd Edition: New Skills for Coaching People Toward Success in Work and, Life1857883039Coaching for Performance, Third Edition (People Skills for Professionals)0750679204Coaching : Evoking Excellence in Others0787986399Executive Coaching with Backbone and Heart: A Systems Approach to Engaging Leaders with Their Challenges0470290358Masterful Coaching2682Leadership2675Management & Leadership3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books2683Management2675Management & Leadership3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books713060011General AAS2675Management & Leadership3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books2571Workplace355561011Organizational Behavior3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books2612General3Business & Investing1000Subjects283155Books400272011Paperback394184011Mass Market401237011Trade394174011Binding (binding)388186011Refinements283155Books618083011Printed Books618072011Format (feature_browse-bin)388186011Refinements283155BooksR2UK89VXX9AREWMy favorite leadership coaching booksCYZVN3UAM17MProfessional Coach's Toolkit2F4733X1FICRLGreat Coaching Books2PZTCPOKMO9P5Best of Organizational Learning, Change, and Development125PIL4R0CXG7Dynamic Leadership Tools for People going placesB0008COT02http://www.amazon.com/hidden-words-Baha%C3%8C%C2%81%C3%8A%C2%BEu%C3%8A%C2%BElla%C3%8C%C2%81h/dp/B0008COT02%3FSubscriptionId%3D05ERXYTS89KFGEPQR5G2%26tag%3Dthebookrevi0b-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB0008COT02BaháʾuʾlláhUnknown BindingEnglishEnglishs.n23Book1939s.ns.nThe hidden words0000005.0194B0008COT025112008-03-22Gem-Like Verses "The Hidden Words" were penned by Baha'u'llah in the early years of His Ministry. These wonderful gem-like verses condense the experience of Divine Revelation to its spiritual essence. Few people are unaffected by the clarity and beauty of this small book.

Of "The Hidden Words", Baha'u'llah said:
"This is that which hath descended from the realm of glory, uttered by the tongue of power and might, and revealed unto the prophets of old. We have taken the inner essence thereof and clothed it in the garment of brevity."

It has been said that "The Hidden Words" is a love-song, a romance of the age-old Love of God for Man. Full of short verses, an underlying theme is the Divine Being's faithfulness and the inevitable unfaithfulness of His Creation, Man. "The Hidden Words" tells of a Beloved Who separates Himself from His creatures so that "spirit" may be breathed into those same creatures in mutually desired Reunion.

Due to its brevity, "The Hidden Words" is a take-everywhere volume of slim proportion and vast resource both within the Baha'i Community and the greater community of believers. Highly recommended to those of contemplative bent. B0008COT025112007-06-07Mystical and magicalThe words of the Hidden Words contain life's purpose, goals, and meaning. Wonderful! The Hidden WordsB0008COT025222007-02-28Peace for the worldBahaullah wrote these short verses of wisdom at a time of great need for spiritual understanding for all mankind. They are inspiring and universal remedys for all beliefs. The best gift you could give yourself or a friend.B0008COT02519192005-10-24A Baha'i Religious TextI have had a long curiosity about the Baha'i Faith and its teachings of the universal nature of religion, the unity of human beings, and the imperative of tolerating and respecting beliefs different from one's own. I have always been intrigued by how these teachings of universalism and the essential unity of all religions can fit within the confines of an individual, independent religion, the Baha'i Faith, with its own teachings and texts. Thus, I was pleased to have the opportunity to read this short book "The Hidden Words of Bahaullah" composed by the founder of the Baha'i Faith, Baha'u'llah (1817 -- 1892) while in prison. The book was written in part in Arabic and in part in Persian and was translated by Baha'u'llah's disciple, Shogi Effendi. This book was my first experience with Baha'i scripture.

"The Hidden Words of Baha'u'llah" consists of about 153 short paragraphs in two parts. It is cast in the form of short revelations to Bahaullah each of which is prefaced by a short exortation such as "To the Son of Man" characterizing the person or persons to whom the revelation is addressed. There is a brief introductory paragraph to the collection, indicating that the aim of the text is to distill, in short form, teachings that are universal to the spiritual life. This goal of the collection is reflected in some of the comments on this site. These teachings have, and were intended to have, many parallels in the teachings of the other great world religions.

The teachings speak of the need for a pure heart, of the need of detachment from everyday life, and of the importance of not envying, critcizing or condemning others. I was struck by the other-worldiness of many of the teachings, as they exhort the follower to turn away from materialism and desire and turn one's attention and heart to the divine. To me, some of the teachings seem directed to mankind, while others, if I am not mistaken, appear primarily directed towards Baha'u'llah himself. In this latter regard, there are several of the teachings which speak of the value of imprisonment, suffering and martyrdom as they advance the cause of God. These teachings seem to be directed to the founder of the faith or to those in danger of persecution on account of their beliefs. While most of the short sayings are readily intelligible to readers of many backgrounds, some sections, particularly near the end of the book, allude to figures that have some specific meaning for the Baha'i faith.

This book is known within the Baha'i community but will appeal to those who have an interest in exploring a variety of spiritual traditions. I am in this latter group. It is an inspiring text. The work here is presented without an introduction, notes, or commentary. Thus, I was unable to learn the place of this specific text within the Baha'i teachings as a whole. An introduction to the book with an overview of the Baha'i Faith and of how this book fits within it would have been invaluable. Also, notes in the way of a commentary on the organization and substance of the text would have been helpful. There is always a great deal more to understanding a short spiritual work than reading the words of the text. Context and discussion would be useful.

This is an important religious text, and it is good to have it widely accessible. It will appeal to those readers interested in the Baha'i Faith, to those interested in comparative religion, and to those interested in spiritual growth.

Robin FriedmanB0008COT025572005-07-27Microcosmic representation of world religious teachingsEveryone should read this book at least twice. An exquisite collection of contemplative verse exploring the eternal relationship between God and man.
