I am a former typing teacher who now teaches keyboarding at a public adult school. I loan my students my only copy of version
1 of this book (1959). The book does not teach the basics of typing, and that is why it is so good to improve typing or keyboarding
speed and accuracy. My version has a built in "words per minute" counting system so all you need is a clock. I highly recommend
this book to anyone who is trying to improve accuracy and speed.

A Surprisingly Great Book

This book is an intriguing mix. Part coming-of-age story, part quest, with a vaguely fantasy-feel, it is not quite like any
other book I have ever read (and I have read quite a few). The main character of the story, Eleni, is very matter-of-fact
and practical, and, while she has pride, she does not let it get in the way of her common sense. Raised on one of the isles
most distant from the capital, her life begins to change when Prince Helos comes to visit her island in an effort to muster
troops for his father's latest war, further evidence that the Fortunate Isles have become increasingly less fortunate in recent
years. She herself is of noble blood, she knows that much, but nothing else really, since her mother refuses to tell her who
her father is. Eleni is different from other heroines, though, in that she doesn't really seem to care overly much either
way about who her father is and, as she puts it, her having blue eyes never did her much good either way. Also, she has no
great yearning to see the "world".
However, a prophecy surfaces which the local priest and his helper, Andreas (Eleni's friend who she wouldn't mind being more than friends with) are certain refers to Eleni (who has her doubts about their conclusion that she is destined to be the Messanger to the Living God and thus the one to save the Isles) ends up sending her on a quest far from her village. She, Andreas, and Nikos the son of the wealthiest man on the island, embark on a journey for the royal city of Malama, and the mountain of the Living God. They encounter various mishaps, from slave traders to scheming village priests, and Eleni begins to realize that the Isles are in a lot more trouble than she had ever realized, and she may be the one who's supposed to do something about it afterall.
With an interesting world and premise, humor, irony, and a story line is well-developed, fast-paced, and engaging and one of the most memorable "heroines" I've ever encountered, this book is a suprisingly good read, and if you are looking for something a little different in the quest/fantasty genre, I recommend that you read this book.

Reeves and Rowe provide a very readable overview of what is currently known about evolutionary algorithms. While the book
provides very good coverage of several recent models of GA dynamics, it would be worth the money if only for the chapter on
the dynamical systems treatment of GAs.
Vose's "The Simple Genetic Algorithm" is a brilliant piece of work, but it also holds the distinction of being the earliest in a book that I have ever become utterly, completely, hopelessly lost. I refer to this book as "the one I use to figure out what Vose was talking about."

I initially began studying with the Emanuel's, but switched to the Gilbert's because it covered more topics in greater detail
than the Emanuel's. In my preparation for the California bar exam, I appreciate the Gilberts' inclusion of specific citations
to California law where appropriate.

Gardenswartz, Rowe, Martin, and Dingh hit it well with this one. All of these powerful writers and trainers bring their energy
and experience to the page with this must-have for interculturalists and diversity trainers, domestic or international. With
a strong goal of helping trainers tap personal, interpersonal, and organizational aspects of diversity and change, this book
is a wonderful tool filled with powerful and practical exercises and tools for training and working with groups.
Written very practically and conversationally, it is as if the authors are sitting with you as they discuss their tools. And included with the book is a CD ROM with activities from each chapter in multiple formats for your use. I highly recommend this book and am pleased to have it on my desk.

Written in an older traditional style, this ICS book is a reprint originally published in the 60s. It is a gentle read, very
inspiring. Before finding this book, I was unaware of this particular Carmelite saint. For those interested in Carmelite
Spirituality this book is a great addition to their library.

A Benchmark Biography

As a historian of American religion and Adventism I am pleased with this new biography of William Miller. Rowe is the first
person I am aware of to meticulously go through all of Miller's extant papers--in places as diverse as Aurora University,
Colgate Seminary in Rochester, and the papers discovered in the William Miller home now owned by Adventist Heritage Ministry.
Rowe, who is not an adherent of any of the Adventist traditions, has done Miller and the story of Adventism a great service
by demythologizing apologetics and hagiography and presenting Miller within his historical, cultural, and religious milieu.
Some Seventh-day Adventists may be surprised as they read this biography to learn that Miller never became a Sabbatarian,
yet I think an adherent of any Adventist tradition will find this a sympathetic yet compelling biography of the founder of
a major religious movement. What is surprising is that no historian has written a biography sooner. The good news is that
this biography was worth the wait!

Grandma's Trunk is a beautifully crafted story which entertains and educates. It is drawn from love letters written by a young
doctor to his sweetheart while they were separated by the events leading up to WWI. The book provides a vivid account of
life in the early Twentieth Century. It introduces the reader to a dynamic woman and the influence she had on her family.
But, the book is more. As she writes the book, the author makes a discovery about herself. Her journey to forgiveness makes
this book extraordinary.
