Couldn't put it down. Was really fast-paced and funny in a whacky sort of way. Reminded me of the movie "Office Space." The characters were well-potrayed.

This is the most authentic book on Cesar Chavez ever!

Review Date: 1999-03-03
I have read this book over twenty times. One major reason is that each time I get new insights into the life and genius of one of this centuries greatest and most brilliant American leaders.

The other reason is because I was priviledged to have worked beside Mr. Chavez during the time of this books writing. Every time I read it I can still hear the author, Jaques Levy, reading it in draft form to Cesar by flashlight as we traveled California and Arizona's highways and biways.

This is truly the closest Mr.Chavez ever came to writing his own book. Jaques Levy had a rare inside look at Cesar, his movement and his family. The combination of trust and journalistic integrity between Mr. Chavez and Jacques Levy made for a great book that covers and captures his actions, thoughts, ideas, trials, ambitions, hopes and dreams. Mr. Levy, together with Cesar Chavez, captures the essence of his formative years, those leading up to his becoming the first Mexican and American hero of this century.

Unlike any other author on Chavez, Mr. Levy captures several examples of Chavez's self taught brilliance and tenacity. He also clearly shows Chavez' ability to grasp any subject and his views on American and poor people's economics. I have read many of the others and having been on the spot while they were written can add that while most err somewhat to a great deal in covering basic facts, Jacques Levy's book is on the money.

If it is possible to get this book reprinted, it should be and I bet a Spanish version would sell a million copies.

Mr. Levy spent nine years researching, writing and editing this work that over time will come to be known as the basic foundation of Mr. Chavez's life

Danger lurks behind every crevice

Ann Livesay has thrilled readers with three prior International thriller mysteries: The Isis Command, Death In The Amazon, and The Madman Of Mount Everest. Ann Livesay is a summa cum laude graduate in geology of the University of Illinois, as well as being a Phi Beta Kappa. However, when she applied to Glacier National Park in Montana for a summer job, she was turned down because of her gender. She was hired in Arizona, however, and has many years of experience at the Grand Canyon National Park there.

Barry Ross is Livesay's point-of-view character in The Chala Project. His wealthy aunt wants to help "clean up the world" with her millions, and Barry acts as her agent, taking on environmental cases. In this episode Barry and his protege, Joe Muck, are assigned to protect the controversial Hounto Chala, a West African office of the United Nations Environment Programme, who fulfills a lifelong dream of coming to Arizona to raft through Grand Canyon National Park. Chala has many enemies because he is an animal rights activist. Protecting him in a three raft entourage is almost impossible:

"`You'll never make it!' said Chief Ranger Lee Federico, bluntly, as we stood beside the placid Colorado River on an overcast morning. A bulky man, scarred, wrinkled, sunburnt, dark glasses hiding his eyes, Federico wasted no words. `Don't get your hopes up, Barry. Everybody in all three rafts will be a sitting duck.'"
The Grand Canyon is one of America's treasures, and setting up an assassination attempt of an animal rights activist is about as chilling an experience as a reader could hope for. Danger lurks behind every crevice as the overworked and underpaid park rangers attempt to foil an enemy that can't be seen.

Lindsey is an expert at setting up exodic landscapes and providing chills and spills along the way. The Chala Project is a series of real-time cliff-hangars (with the cliffs described in tortuous detail). Joe Muck and Barry Ross are both sexy, intriguing personalities who apply their craft in a precise, sure to please manner. Lindsey doesn't disappoint with her fourth installment of Barry Ross, and this reviewer will anxiously wait for her next episode.

Changing Patterns of Industrial Conflict

There are two important dimensions to study : the historical - which is concerned with trends and changes of labor disputes over a period of time; and the comparative - which deals with significant differences in patterns of conflict among various areas of the world.

The authors develops and uses a single analytical framework for both aspects of the subject. Within this framework, they interpret the 20th century industrial experience of fifteen countries including the US and Canada and explain the national trends and international differences in the frequency and duration of industrial disputes. The book concludes with a discussion of probable future developments in labor-management relations

I would recommend this book as it is a detailed honest accounting of the harsh realities of young prostitutes. The hard hitting factual account leaves the reader with a sense of what is really happening in the streets. This is not a hollywood "feel good" portrayal. These are real young ladies with real hardships and lives.

This book is for those who don't like the sugar coating so often seen in this genre. It is for honest people with honest opinions. It is for those who demand to be informed and will seek out that knowledge.

Read this shocking, factual novel at once. Do not wait for the movie for it will never live up to the scrutiny this Novel By Ross MacInnes does.

A book about saints for the littlest children
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2005-09-18
Having read the "a treasure for children" review, I can only say a hearty "Amen". Of the over 15 books of saints that I have reviewed (click on "see all my reviews for the others) I believe that this is geared for the youngest children of them all. The concepts are shared on as simple a level as possible for children who are old enough to learn about saints, but the stories are well read and darling. The reading level is also low enough for your second graders to be able to read it to themselves. Two pages are committed to each saint - one for a simple and sweet (but not syrupy) colorful picture of a saint and a short prayer that a child can say as a response to reading about the life of the saint, geared very much on a child's level of understanding and interest. I would not recommend it for the price of a collector's item. There are paperbacks of this same book available on this site. I have also reviewed over 15 other books on saints for children if you want to see the other reviews of books that I have given.
The saints which are included in this book are: Agnes....... Aloysius Gonzaga....... Angela Merici....... Anne....... Anthony of Padua....... Augustine....... Benedict....... Bernadette....... Bridget of Sweden....... Catherine Laboure....... Catherine of Siena....... Cecilia....... Dominic Savio.......Elizabeth of Hungary....... Elizabeth Seton....... Frances Xavier Cabrini....... Francis of Assissi....... Francis de Sales....... Francis Xavier....... Gemma Galgani....... George....... Helen the Empress....... Ignatius Loyola....... Isaac Jogues....... Isidore the Farmer....... Jane Frances De Chantal....... Joan of Arc....... John the Baptist....... John Baptist De La Salle....... John Bosco....... John Neumann....... Joseph....... Jude....... Kateri Tekakwitha....... Lucy....... Margaret Mary....... Maria Goretti....... Martin De Porres....... Mary Queen of Saints....... Patrick....... Paul....... Peter....... Peter Clavier....... Rose of Lima....... Stanislaus Kostka....... Stephen....... Theresa the Little Flower....... Thomas the Apostle....... Thomas Acquinas....... Thomas More....... Vincent De Paul.

As a busy new mom, I'm finding that I no longer have oodles of time to linger over menus for the week. This book has easy & nutritious meals already laid out for four weeks. I enjoy not having to think through what we're going to have for the next week. All I have to do is write down my ingredient list & head out to the store. I can only think of 2-3 recipies in the book that aren't tasty... if you have your own Fajita recipe, I would use it instead of the one listed in the book. Also, the apricot muffin recipe just doesn't seem to work as listed; the result is too wet. Our top picks from the book are the bagel/tuna melt and the chicken stir fry recipe.

Jerry Moe is probably one of the most gifted men in the US for working with the children of an alcoholic family. He works at Betty Ford Center, and he runs their children's center. I heard him speak once, and he made the audience laugh and cry. This book is a treasure.
