Three Ways of Asian Wisdom is a classic that should have never gone out of print. I read it over the period of about a month, not at bedtime like a novel, but over morning coffee while my mind was at its most alert because I wanted to fully enjoy the fascinating interplay of ideas.

This book is a perfect introduction to these great religions without oversimplifying them. Ross writes with clarity about the historical, philosophical and cultural influences that shaped Hinduism, Buddism, and Zen. Her impressive depth of research into each of the three subjects gives her the detail and anecdotes which keep the book from becoming dry, and undoubtedly her personal experience has given her an insight which gives the work its immediacy.

The fact that she discusses these three "ways" under the same cover allows the author to explain their influences upon one another. She also touches upon the relationship of Confucianism and Taoism to Zen. Many photographs of Hindu, Buddist and Zen art are discussed at length and constitute an integral part of her explanation of these Three Ways of Asian Wisdom.

A beautiful, eloquent and stimulating book.

31 (or less) reasons why 31 truths is a must have
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-10-07
I am a seminary student studying to be a minister of students. In this book there are clearly 31 truths but those 31 contain 31 which contain 31 more, in other words, I read this in a library and decided it was important enough to purchase. While is wasn't written or published in the 21st century Dr. Richard Ross has been and is (in the 21st century) an incredible authority on student ministry. His passion for God and for teenagers (and their parents) and the church (and so much more) is reflected in this book. An enjoyable portion of the book is at the end of the "truth" is a challenge or an application section.

An enlightening look at a unique, american artist
Helpful Votes: 9 out of 14 total.

After admiring the artwork displayed on my sister's notebook, I was to curious to find more about Abbot Handerson Thayer and his body of work. Since this was the only book I could find of the man, I would have to say it is the best. Inside it gives a brief biography of the artist including photos of him, his family and friends, and various paintings finished and unfinished. Unfortunately, a majority of the pictures are black and white(which sucks) and it is a glossy paperback(whoopee!). If, however, you do enjoy Thayer's style, I would recommend another artist, Thomas Wilmer Dewing. Both share a passion for painting angels and being long- dead- and- forgotten artists who are probably burning in hell thinking that piety can be found in creativity(ha! ha! suckers!).

Good review of Buddhism
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 7 total.
Review Date: 2003-06-08
Volumes VII and VIII of this series deal with early Buddhism a few centuries after the life of the Buddha. These volumes render quite well the early schisms that emerged from the various understandings and interpretations of the followers of what one could call "the original Buddhist teachings" (which we have almost no chance to know what they really were). Buddhism is really that : a bunch of different and sometimes contradictory schisms that each show the particular biases of the members of each schism. However, being aware that the goal of Buddhism should not depend on the means to attain it, one should use his intelligence to determine what statement is due to the misbeliefs or assumptions of each schism to understand its purpose. Don't think that consistency is a good criterion to judge philosophy, scholarly accounts rely on scientific beliefs of consistency and logical thinking. Philosophy transcends such petty intellectual biases modern scientific thinking takes as true.

These two volumes coupled with the volumes edited by Bhikkhu Boddhi (Middle-length, long and connected discourses of the Buddha published by Wisdom books) will provide you with everything you need to undertand what Buddhism is about. Do not let scholars prevent your heart and soul to feel what the Buddhist teachings can provide.

An overview of Jews on the margin
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2007-02-15
This short book consists of brief chapters on various groups of Jews whose "Jewishness" has been questioned by Jews living in the main Talmudic, Rabbinical tradition. Among them are the Karaites, the Samaritans, "Marranos" living in Portugal, the Falasha, the Bene Israel of India, the Jews of China (prior to the Ashkenazim taking shelter in Shanghai), a small group living in a village outside Mexico City, and others. The title, of course, alludes to "auto da fe", the torments to which Jews, among others, were subjected by the Inquisition.
Each portrait is quite vivid, factually and humanly, the result of the author's own visits with members of the groups, in their own locales, or at least with those in the best position to know, as well as his own library and archive research.
The author had been a journalist in the USA and Israel, and the type of easy personal manner that is so valuable to a journalist comes through in this book, without the superficiality so common among members of that trade. I also notice a directness and good humor, a willingness to take people at their word that seems to have become less common in the twentyfive years since the book was written. This is epitomized, it seems to me, in the author's conclusion that people who feel that they are Jews are in fact Jews.

I bought this book because I was adopting an adult Pembroke Welsh Corgi. I had never owned a dog before, and it was extremely helpful. It told me some things to expect as normal (she didn't eat for the first few days that I had her) and explained some of her behaviors, what they meant, and how to deal with them. If you are getting a puppy, this book also covers puppy behavior, training, etc. It's a great overview for new dog owners whether you're getting a puppy or adult dog, purchasing from a breeder or adopting from a shelter. Very comprehensive and helpful!!

The Adventures Of Terry Tanuki: The Magical Raccoon by William James Ross is a thoroughly enjoyable novel for young readers about six magical adventures of Terry Tanuki, a racoon-like magical creature who escapes the circus, meets wondrous and fantastic creatures, and undertakes challenging tasks to solve hidden mysteries. A delightful and pleasant read, The Adventures Of Terry Tanuki is a highly recommended addition to family, school, and public library collections.
