...and though it certainly warrants rapt attention, you'll no doubt soon feel a welling desire for a nice pipe-ful out of doors.
A pipeful of what? Likely, the very "weeds" at you feet, and within the pages of "Smoke Plants", you'll discover yourself surrounded by an intriguing world of medicine wherever the ground grows green.
A wonderful, wonderful book.

As the hot spots of the world's bioversity, rainforests have gotten lots of attention from naturalists and adventurous eco-tourists, who want to explore these green worlds for themselves. There have been countless field guides (both printed and audio) to birds in various parts of the New World tropics, but this audio guide exposes the voices of rainforest mammals, many of them retiring and rarely seen in the thick foliage, for study and appreciation.
The first disc is brief (about 40 minutes), but sound recordings of a lot of these mammals are not easily obtained. Over 50 species give voice to their unique sounds. Opossums snort and grunt, jaguars make a sound like someone sawing on a log, tapirs whistle like birds. There is even a recording of a river dolphin spouting, the sudden explosive noise almost out of place among the other jungle sounds.
The second disc, longer in length, features the most vocal of the rainforest mammals, the primates. Some of these produce sounds that could easily be mistaken for the sounds of other creatures. For example, some of the smaller monkeys, like the tamarins, produces squeaks and chitters that are surprisingly birdlike. The night monkey, calling after dark when it would probably never be seen, hoots exactly like an owl. The loudest of the rainforest monkeys, the howlers, produce roars of such intensity that they will literally frighten anyone who visits the rainforest but does not know that these are the sounds of harmless vegetarians.
"Sounds of Neotropical Rainforest Mammals" is off the beaten track, to be sure, but if you are traveling to the tropics anytime soon, I strongly recommend it. Even if you're not, I recommend it anyway. You haven't really lived until you've startled your neighbors with the loud, cackling chorus of the dusky titi monkey.

Become a Beautiful Mutant!Review Date: 2004-02-22
Heaven explains how the world we have created through our collective dreaming is not serving us, precisely because of the dreams, imaginings and intentions we have of it, and shows how we can change those dreams so that we make a better place for ourselves and for all life.
It's far from a 'worthy' book or a dry academic one though. Some of the examples and exercises he gives are exceptional, exciting, and truly life-changing. I felt liberated and empowered by reading this and I am using some of its exercises in my life on a daily basis.
As Heaven says, the first inclination of a spiritual seeker is often to run away from the madness and claustrophobia of the city but, like it or not, most of us are tied to the city by our jobs or our home loans etc, so we feel trapped and without an alternative. This book IS the alternative, showing how to cope with city living in a spiritual way that makes us healthier instead of more drained by the life going on around us.
Highly recommended.

A rare opportunity to see professionalism in actionReview Date: 2003-06-06
This book has three advantages over the usual military
book. First, he appeared to have earned considerable credibility from the people involved in the story. Fighter units will
not give this credibility lightly, and it helped Mr. Simpson project an almost palpable feel for the daily life and working
relationships of the unit he covered.
Second, this book shows how a good unit responds to a crisis outside their normal
training pattern. Many books give a good account of America's military and how they train with what they use, but this one
shows the head-scratching flexibility when something happens outside the instruction manual.
Last and not least, the
author showed the critical importance of the families and how they help one another maintain and improve their spirit. The
families responded to this emergency with the same degree of leadership, competence, flexibility, and caring as did the frontline
units. Good show! -- and one we rarely see in the press.
Stealth fighters are pretty high-tech, but the edge enjoyed by
this unit had less to do with technological superiority and more to do with old-fashioned integrity, competence, consistency,
excellence, and unit spirit. A good commander from WW II might not recognize the shape of the F-117, but would certainly
appreciate the leadership, unit cohesion, and family support. This was especially notable in Mr. Simpson's picture of the
Stealth unit commander, who epitomized what we think of as Professionalism.
Disclaimer: I'm a military retiree but
cannot imagine how I would have any commercial interest in anything connected with the book.
... It's worth finding.
