Imagine my delight as a paper doll collector to find these beautiful books about Girl Scouts. Imagine my further delight to find that the author is Kathryn McMurtry Hunt, who was in my Brownie and Girl Scout groups long ago in Lubbock, Texas! They are beautifully done and sure to bring on a great big Brownie smile for Girl Scouts current and long past!

This is an excellent book for any leader wanting to educate her troop on the history of Girl Scouts. There are many badges at the Brownie and Junior level that can be earned, in part, by using this book. It is written at a level for girls of all ages. I hope Ms. Hunt continues this series to present day uniforms with the diary notes. Very interesting book. Thanks.

Rockoff gives a brilliant account of the history of the American Economy and is possibly the best American economic historian in US history.

This is definitely the best introductory book there is on the subject. This was a supplemental book for an undergraduate class of mine, but I read it anyway. The authors lucid writing allows this book to be thoroughly understood by all readers despite their backround in economics. I truly believe that this book should be required reading for all history, political science, finance, sociology, and economics majors.

Unlike most books on the history of anything, this book starts from the beginning. The authors start off discussing explorers and empires and then go into colonization. Extremely informative on the economics of different regions in colonial America and the Industrial Revolution.

Best biography of Hitler written by a German
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2000-07-05
Though Maser's treatment of Hitler is not as readable, fluid or as definitive as American John Toland's 1977 biography, this is the second-best biography written about Hitler.

Maser's historical credibility was compromised in 1977 by his announcement that he had discovered Hitler's "son," Jean Lorret, the result, supposedly, of Hitler's relationship with a Belgian peasant girl in World War I. The original German-language edition of this book carries that story, with photos of Hitler's alleged paramour.

This book is not good for novices, and it would help if there was a backlog of knowledge about Hitler prior to tackling Maser's prose. But for those who are well-versed in Hitler, this is an excellent book.

Best Hitler biography by far.

This book's only shortcoming is that it isn't as clearly mapped out as the others, but what it lacks in organization of facts it more than makes up for in detail. I praise this author above all of Hitler's other biographers, because he was the LEAST-BIASED. He also digs deeper than most others were willing or able to. His statements were based on fact.
1.) Maser gives a thorough list of the key dates in Hitler's life, including the battles he took part in.
2.) He compares Hitler with Napoleon (very insightful!)
3.) He is one of the few to admit Hitler's enormous talent both as an artist and as a human being.
4.) Maser doesn't tend to demonize Hitler as readily as other authors did and still do.
5.) Maser reaveals some fascinating facts surrounding "Hitler's son"

The list goes on...
It is such a shame that this book is so hard to find in the States. A tip for all literate in German, try to get ahold of the updated German version of this book. You won't be disappointed.

I have never really looked at poetry and it never got my attention before. I got the book from the author Roger Ross Ribbonleg with his signature, and i started reading it . I was really amazed in how it really got me looking at myself at a different way, and i should say in a better way. I agree with the other readers who have read this book in saying "it is a great book to own". I know the Author as a friend, and to know who him is a whole different story on its own than to read his books.

I have red a lot of poetry books before, but after carefully reading "Seasons of Scattering" which is his first book it was great. His second book is even better which is "Honorable Tears" and i recommend the readers to try it out. Roger's books changed the way i feel about everything. I am a poet as well, but i can't seem to be at the same level as he is to change an individual. I guess i will keep on trying to be as good a poet as he is and maybe someday people will be rating me too.

This book is charming and my children love it. They can never get enough rereadings and seem to laugh at all the mischief Henry manages to inflict on his family. Since Henry's parents seem to favor his brother, Perfect Peter, this is Henry's chance to star on his own. I recommend it highly.

I am 7 1/2 yrs. old and I loved this book, along with the other Horrid Henry books. Henry is horrible, especially to his younger brother named "Perfect Peter". But the things Henry does are very funny - they make me laugh. There are 4 chapters in this book. My favorite chapter is the last one titled "Horrid Henry's Christmas". I laughed when Henry switched the his name tags on the Christmas gift with his cousin "Stuck-up Steve". The words are written in British, but I understand them and enjoy learning the new words.

Devilishly Delightful For Read Aloud

Review Date: 2008-05-25
Ten whimsical stories that captivated my second grade class. They delighted in Horrid Henry's "brilliant" schemes which hysterically seem to go awry. While the girls giggled, the boys who normally blanch at the mere thought of sitting still were bamboozled. An excellent choice for pure entertainment and wonderful examples of alliteration.

The Horrid Henry series is also a great exposure to British vocabulary and culture. It was a good springboard for me to teach the children about other cultures who do things "differently" as opposed to "the wrong way."

There is one caveat for primly proper parents, it is in the same spirit of Dennis the Menace. If you do not want to expose your child to "genius" schemes hatched by a boy plagued by his "perfect-in-every-way" brother, then perhaps, this book or the Horrid Henry series is not for you. HOWEVER, it is a great book that will keep normally reluctant readers reading--especially boys.

This collection of Horrid Henry stories brings back to parents the joys of English primary school. Ten school-related stories covering such gems as new teachers, school work, the dreaded 'nits', school trips, dinner ladies, school projects, swimming and... the problem with underpants!
These are easily read stories that allow both parent and child to share
in the fun escapades of Henry and his brother 'perfect' Peter. We've all been there at some point in the story and your kids will love it!

Raising the Next Generation Differently
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2008-10-09
The impact of Julie Ross's book may not be felt for another 15 to 20 years, but the impact could be powerful. If you look at the financial crisis we're facing, it's obvious there's a significant portion of the current generation that believes that anything goes as long as you don't get caught, and if you do get caught, find someone other than yourself to blame. Children raised to "behave" or "obey" rarely develop an inner compass between right and wrong. They may have the appearance of propriety, but the when push comes to shove, they'll do what's in their best interest, and to hell with everybody else.

To counter this trend, Julie Ross's new book offers the radical proposition that instead of trying to get your child to "behave", we should teach our children how to "cooperate". Using dozens of real life examples culled from actual cases, she offers clear, practical techniques on how to raise children who are neither door mats or bullies but instead are courageous, cooperative and compassionate human beings.

This is not a "know it all" book. These are dispatches sent directly from the trenches of modern day parent / child conflict, and Julie doesn't steer away from difficult and touchy topics like sex, drugs, addiction and peer pressure. But as with her other books (Joint Custody with a Jerk and Practical Parenting for the 21st Century), she writes with insight and humor about the challenges of raising prickly 'tweens, always with an eye on the prize: raising children to become the kind of adults we can be proud of.

An extraordinary book

This is an extraordinary book which will change the way that I think about and relate to my child. The book's premises are that pre-adolescents and adolescents in the years of middle school are like the chrysalis of a butterfly, struggling to change but susceptible to damage if handled too much or in the wrong way, and that communication which creates a trusting relationship enables the teenager who eventually emerges to make healthy choices. The strengths of the book are the care with which it details specific forms of communication which will and will not create this relationship based on case histories of parents and adolescents. I found it compelling because it was able to take highly personal situations and put them in a perspective that persuaded me to see my own child's behavior in new ways. Ross presents a significant amount of research on such topics as substance abuse, sexual practice and internet use but weaves the research so gracefully through case history that the book is accessible, lively and clear to the general reader while still making a theoretical contribution to theories of personality.

About six years ago my grandmother died of breast cancer at the age of 63 and naturally I wanted to find out what I could do to PREVENT getting this disease. I went to the public library and put in some keywords into the computer and this was the only book that had the keyword PREVENT in the title. I checked the book out, read it, and loved it. It even convinced me to become a vegetarian. It is important that the purchaser realizes that the book concentrates on diet, exercise, and a overall healthy lifestyle which in my opinion is the only way to LOWER YOUR RISK.
It discusses other risks such as early menstruation, first child after age 30, choosing not to breastfeed, late menopause, and harmone replacement therapy. I read this book at the age of 27, I am 31 now and have bought copies for interested family members. I especially like the fact that it was written by several doctors who specialize in the field. If you want the truth about breast cancer prevention, then buy this book, you will not be disappointed.
