"Get It Off!" follows "Dressed to Kill" by the same authors. Sydney Ross Singer and his wife, Soma Grismaijer. Medical Anthropologists, the co-authors are dedicated to uncovering the cultural causes of disease. They have a courageous willingness to stand up to the profit-oriented, treatment-focussed medical system. But this is not a doctor-bashing book. Their insights into the reasons why women develop breast cancer can be easily grasped by the reader, and touches of subtle humour help lighten what is essentially a most serious subject. If women were to accept bra-free living as normal, the book explains how women can help themselves avoid breast pain, cysts and cancer. Breast cancer is explained as a culturally caused disease. Scientific evidence supporting the link between bras and breast cancer is contained in "Dressed to Kill". The "Little Breast Play" in "Get It Off!" has been performed as a musical entitled "The Booby Trap" in Manhatten.

When more women take notice of the words of wisdom in "Get It Off!" there will be far less concern about breast cancer. It is a unique book. The drift I got from reading "The Little Breast Play" was that it can help people overcome their conditioning from early life experiences - that for women to wear a bra is normal. It isn't! I've been surprised, speaking to women of all ages about the content of the book, how they could, very simply and virtually at no expense, reduce their chances of breast cancer. But what a lukewarm reception my suggestion has received! Most of us get a few jolts in our lifetimes and, if we are sufficiently open, we can change direction. Winston Churchill is quoted along the lines: "Some people stumble on the truth and most, when they do, pick themselves up and hurry on as if nothing had happened." I'm unsure of the "truth" to which Winston Churchill was referring, but the truth of the link between bras and breast cancer leaps out from the pages of Sydney and Soma's books. Every woman who wears a bra would gain much insight from Sydney and Soma's enlightened understanding.

Practical advice for the most common ministry field

This book has helped me in living out my faith in the workplace. Ross West has the hard won experience and spiritual depth needed to really be a guide to many of us in this challenging area. He addresses many areas such as responding to unethical situations and seeing spiritual value in our work/in others. He establishes a useful theology of why we work and what our work means and then proceeds to show many practical examples of how that theology can be applied in everyday work-a-day life. One of my favorite parts of the book is the simple but profound observation that we can and should view our work, no matter what it is, as ultimately helping another person somewhere. It's hard to think of a job where this is not the case and even though my technology job is somewhat removed from people directly, it does help them elsewhere. The book caused me to reflect on my work in constructive ways after years of confusion on this topic. I have already recommended the book to some close Christian friends who have the same challenges. It is not easy to find books that are as theologically sound and practical as this one. I am starting to read William E. Diehl who has also written in this area.

Moving beyond irrational theism

The fundamental theological issue of our time is the nature of God. In the past, our ideas about God have been largely theistic or anthropomorphic -- i.e. a God who intervenes in the affairs of this world, makes demands and engages in judgement. In this compelling set of essays, consisting of transcripts of the well-received God at 2000 lectures and forum held in Corvallis, Oregon in 2000, several world-class scholars develop this theme. Anyone who wishes to move in the direction of the theology of the future is likely to find this book both interesting and rewarding.

Seven contmporary scholars from varying religious traditions: Karen Armstrong, Diana Eck, Sayyed Hossein Nesr, Joan Chittister, Laurence Kushner, Desmond Tutu, and Marcus Borg attempt to answer thid provocative questions each in his or her own fashion. The result is thoughful, challenging, and enlightening. I would have loved to attend the discussions the book is based on, but since i did not I appreciate the book to give me an idea of what it must have been like.

This book is about how Grover asked his friends to provide him things, like sticks, newspaper, rags, paste and string to make a kite. Each friend passed by would say, "Come on over, Grover, let's play...." Then Grover replied, " Not yet. May I have your...." Step by step, Grover gathered all the parts to make a beautiful kite. It is a great story to arouse the curiosity of a little child and guide him how to give declines and make requests politely. My 2.75 years old falls in love with this book and can even tell the story himself.

Have some fun with Grover and his friends!

We've probably read this book a zillion-million times and both my daughter and I still love it. Grover is asked to play, time and time again. Each friend is given a polite decline and asked to share their particular treasure. Grover takes each offering and builds a kite which is the delight of all his friends in the end. Such a wonderful lesson in sharing, politeness, and creating. A plus is that the text is easy to read for 4 - 6 year olds. A definate must have for your library.

A great Western myth captured in paint
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2001-10-13
Thom Ross knows his O.K. Corral history -- there's no doubt about that -- but it is the O.K. Corral myth that he really seeks to translate into the painting contained in this book. Whereas most Western American art is firmly realistic, often almost photographic in intent, Ross's art dares to venture into the realm of the abstract to better capture those elements of myth. In nearly fifty paintings, accompanied by his own text, Thom Ross tells the story of this most famous gunfight in history. I cannot think of another book which has ever sought to achieve such an end, so I believe that Ross deserves double praise for his creativity. If you don't know much about this event, then "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral" is not at all a bad place to begin learning. But even if you have read a dozen books about that day in Tombstone, Ross's book will still have a powerful impact. And after you close the covers of this slender volume, those images remain in your vision, haunting and somehow very alive.

Normally on the 26th of October, I view the 1957 movie
"Gunfight at the O. K. Corral" with Burt Lancaster and
Kirt Douglas. I know exactly what I am getting which is
entertainment.

This year I flipped through the Thom Ross book by the
same title and again I was entertained. The Preface said
History but my gut reaction said entertainment. The
history here is fast and loose. Like the movie this book
is FICTION and should be accepted as such.

Enjoy the exquisite paintings. but ignore the connection
between the paintings and the text. And between the text
and History because it isn't here. In fact ignore the text
altogether. Buy this book for the paintings.
and you have a bargain

I do not wish to list the many historical errors of the Ross
and Hutton book here. That might ruin your enjoyment of the
paintings. On this the 120th anniversary of the gunfight
between good and evil, stay focused on the main event.
Don't worry about desecration. Think consecration. History
can wait. this is the age of art and entertainment. If you
have to blame anyone, blame the proofreader. What does he
know?

A nice alternative to the American Girls series, this takes place during the Industrial Revolution, where older sister Rebecca works in the textile mills to help the family out. Hannah is left to all the housework and worries about her family, especially her tired sister and her grieving widower father. She tries to make a 'fancy box'for Rebecca's birthday; but it is when the box becomes a family project that success and healing follow.

The book is about a girl named Hannah. She has two twin sisters, a baby sister and a big sister called Rebecca. She also has a father, but their mother died. This means Hannah has to do all the housework. I feel that it's not fair . They leave the eldest, Rebecca, in charge but she goes out and asks Hannah to do her all of her work. I like the book because Hannah's family thought that there was no time for pretty things or "fancy notions" - but Hannah knew better. I dislike the way they give Hannah all the work to do all the time.

Bug-style rebellion
Helpful Votes: 6 out of 6 total.
Review Date: 2002-09-25
This sequel about Harry (actually, Hxzltl, in Centipedish) and his friend George again takes the bugs out from down-under (ground, that is), into the forbidden Up-Pipe and the world of the HOO-MINS.

Here, the bug boys are caught in hard-air-prisons (jars), meet a tarantula, learn about rain and discover why it's important (sometimes) to listen to grown-ups.

I wasn't at all amused by their antics, but my opinion doesn't count. My 10-year old critter loves Harry and his friend. He likes animals, loves bugs, and adores rebellious characters. More than once, Harry has kept him up at night, reading under the covers. He's plowed through this book three times in the last month.

Perfect for second, third or fourth grade readers who prefer illustrated chapter books, the 180-page further adventures of a many-footed mischief-maker will delight kids of the same spirit. Alyssa A. Lappen
