This book is non-stop reading from beginning to end. The descriptions are exceptional. I couldn't put it down wanting to know what was around the next corner. Buy the book and enjoy the journey into the north woods as I did.

Great book! The imagery throughout this novel is incredible. The characters are real and entirely believable. I definately encountered a few unexpected turns and twists throughout the story. Read this book when you have some time to yourself - you may not be able to put it down. A worst case scenario indeed!

This Guide Helps You Become Weather-Wise!!!

+++++

This slim book, by Cambridge meteorology lecturer Ross Reynolds is a practical, invaluable guide for all those influenced directly or indirectly by the weather (which is all of us). Reynolds elaborates: "Amongst other things, this book outlines a grounding in meteorology for those who want to gain a basic understanding of what makes the weather `tick,' and to appreciate what lies behind some of today's great atmospheric environmental issues.

Each chapter of this nine-chapter book begins with a brief summary:

(1) The Atmosphere

"Before looking at the weather in detail, it is necessary to set the scene by explaining some basic facts about the atmosphere's chemical make-up, its structure and layering, and what drives it to on a global scale. This basic knowledge will help you understand subsequent chapters."

(2) Weather Observation

"Many people take more than just a conversational interest in the atmosphere by recording weather measurements at home. In some countries, there are networks of enthusiasts who produce regular newsletters that often include members' observations. The advent of the internet has facilitated even wider links between observers on an intercontinental scale."

(3) Weather Mapping

"Portraying the elements of both the `actual' weather and its forecast state as a...map, for one instant, is crucial in...meteorology. Satellite and radar `images' also aid in the visualization of extensive [weather] detail in a quickly [non-overwhelming] form. Much of the complexity of the atmosphere is, and will remain, summarized in map form that is truly international language for meteorology."

(4) Global Weather

"It is important to understand the links between patterns of global [atmospheric] pressure, circulation, temperature, humidity, and precipitation before investigating individual weather-producing disturbances such as...hurricanes and typhoons."

(5) How the Weather Works

"Every day, we all experience one facet or another of the weather, even if this is only the view from a window on a dull day...What makes the wind blow? How do clouds form and stay in the sky? How do they produce rain, snow, and drizzle? Why are there different types of fog? How do dew and frost form? These topics [and more] are discussed in this chapter."

(6) Weather Forecasting

"To most people, the main aim of the meteorologist is to prepare and present a weather forecast. Furthermore, television is probably the most common medium through which they obtain information on what is likely to happen over the next day or so weather-wise."

(7) Hazardous Weather

"In many parts of the world, the most common natural hazard to effect society is the weather. Its impact may be very short lived-from the disastrous transit of a tornado, to the potentially devastating passage of widespread gales that may last a day or so-or much more extensive, such as widespread flooding that may persist for weeks, or drought that may last for a season."

(8) World Holiday Weather

"This chapter gives general information on the duration of various aspects of the climate, at a variety of holiday and other locations." (Note that this chapter provides a graph for monthly temperature, monthly rainfall, and monthly sunlight for each location or city profiled. This information is particularly useful for travelers.)

(9) Environmental Issues

"During the last decade or so, we have become more aware of global or near-global changes in the atmosphere that have occurred naturally or through the activities of [humans]...El Nino, global warming, and the `hole' in the ozone layer are three environmental issues that are described in detail in this chapter."

In a few places within this book are internet addresses for major sites that provide up-to-date details of various topics within weather and climate.

This book has more than 300 illustrations (photographs, satellite imagery, maps, or diagrams), most in color. Also included are graphs, tables and charts. In fact, almost every page of this book contains at least one illustration, graph, table, or chart.

Finally, there is a handy glossary that provides definitions of common (examples: "precipitation," "snow") and uncommon (examples: "cut-off," "southern oscillation") weather terms.

In conclusion, this book concisely and adequately explains a fascinating subject important to all of us--the weather!!

This book shows the history and beginnings of this dangerous denomination. This book chronicles how the Church of Christ was started in the early 1800's by men who departed from the scriptures. This book will help to clear up many issues and questions. Being a former member, I would recommend this book to anyone who desires to read for themselves the facts of this group of people. Many sincere people have been lead astray by the teachings of the Church of Christ but this book will help to answer and refute the unscriptural claims of this group.

In the second half Ross addresses the bibical versus peculiar to the denomation ( church of Christ). Ross in not neutral in his veiws but supports his disagreement with the Campbellites with numerous bible versus.

Adorable - a must-have for cat-lovers

This collection of familiar Christmas carols reworked to a feline perspective is priceless. Laurie Loughlin writes with a deft touch and a wry understanding of the feline nature, as only a cat-lover can. The illustrations are hilarious and sweet.

I think my favorite is: "Oh Come All Ye Furful" -- it's not only very funny but perfectly captures cat-ness in lyrics such as:

Oh come all ye furful
Hungry and well-rested
Oh come ye, oh come ye
To the master bedroom

and

Meow, choirs of felines
Meow in expectation
Meow 'til you get your mom
And dad out of bed

Fun and funny feline versions of Christmas carols.

I may be a bit biased in my review of CHAMPEEN as I have the priviledge of KNOWING and LIKING ALOT, Heather Ross Miller. She is a smart, very funny lady, she can turn a trip to the grocery store into a funny story, she is the type of person you love to sit with and and chat with, but mostly LISTEN to. This is how I felt while reading her "CHAMPEEN". It is a wonderful story, actually a whole lotta stories in a story, some very funny, some very sad. Being a woman myself, I could relate alot to the main character, TITANIA, both as a woman and as a young girl turning 13. The classic teen-age crush on an older guy, the fantasies of doing something GREAT, like twirling fire in Titania's case-----wanting to be loved and adored by all. Heather, to me, is a master story-teller, who can take everyday ordinary people we encounter and turn them into funny caricatures. For example, Titania's alcoholic father who captures the neighborhood yappy, irritating rat-dog and gives him a bath in their tub, which infuriates Titania's perfect mother, a woman who wants everything and everyone around her to be perfect. And there is the fat preacher who comes to Badin to baptize lost souls in the lake, only to fall into it himself------his speech is a riot, I just loved how she wrote it. I strongly recommend this book for both readers AND writers, as I think Heather is a great writer, a master of words. And I know she is dedicated to her craft, she has written forever, and she has the story-telling genes in her, as her father was a writer, her uncle, her aunt, etc. In closing, I give CHAMPEEN an enormous THUMBS UP, and I am even going to read it again after I am finished with my current book.

This book is a riveting story of life in a small rural town and the joys and heartbreaks of growing up. I loved the storytelling of Heather Ross Miller, and felt like I was in Badin NC, sweltering in the summer heat! Can't wait till her next book is published this fall to hear her wonderful storytelling voice once again! I give this book 5 stars!!!

I have read several books on bullying - this is by far the best and should be in every school library. It is intelligent, easily read, full of useful information and well reasoned . Many books on bullying concentrate on the psychological aspect as unfortunately most of the authors come from this field of study. However most teachers, to use Holt's expression want to know "what do I do Monday". Ross tells us. She is worth listening to. Buy this book! To the author I say well done, I have suggested to all Irish Headmasters to buy your book. I hope they do!

The Very Best Writer of "Legal Fiction"

Review Date: 2003-08-25
I first discovered Mr. Solmssen's novels while in law school in the '70s, and his books still stand as the very best fiction I've read centering on the practice of law. Not only are his accounts of the practice far richer and more realistic than, say, Grisham's -- his characters are real, three-dimensional people, and he develops a sense of time and place that still rings true.

It is a shame that this fiction never caught on with the general public, having been crowded out by far inferior competition. Still, the discerning reader would be well rewarded by seeking out from the library or an out-of-print dealer, in order, "Rittenhouse Square;" "Alexander's Feast;" and "The Comfort Letter." Another novel by Solmssen, "A Princess in Berlin," is even better than those three, and a sort of distant prequel.

There really are no words to describe the Chance Purdue stories. Call them hilarious, a delicious spoof of the hard-boiled detective tales, call them a new drink: Phillip Marlowe with a (genetic) twist -- call them anything, but READ them. And guess what: They are even funnier when read aloud in your best imitation Bogart monotone. My only mistake was having taken a drink of coffee when I read this:
< She said, 'What's your name again?" I said, "Purdue." I said, "Like the Big Ten." She said, "Young man, I think you're exaggerating." >

I spewed coffee everywhere! All of Ross Spencer's books are worth the time and money, but none of his characters ever stole my heart like sexy, dunderheaded Chance Purdue!

1,000 laughs.

Got a craving for humor? Love a well spun yarn that skates the edge between the ridiculous and the sublime? How about Phillip Marlowe meets Spoon River Anthology, as interpreted by Hawkeye Pierce? Well, friend, rush out and grab a copy of The Compleat Chance Purdue.

Ross Spencer has created the blondest blond bimbos, surliest villains, and most relentless victims ever to rub shoulders with a "private dick." Bumbling heroes, disoriented vamps, and a series of plots punchtuated with wry (or perhaps inspired by rye) humor from start to finish -- The Compleat Chance Purdue is a writer's joy and a reader's delight from cover to cover.
