An excellent piece of work that draws on distinct cultural issues of contemporary society from both high and low culture, weaving them into a fluent narrative that reaches out to the reader on both an emotional and intellectual level.

What a fantastic book which kept me hooked until the very end.
The character development is superb and makes you feel as though these people really do exist with each personality uniquely honed by the author.
The plot has a refreshingly original take to it with some real thought provoking insights into how society interacts with itself and the kind of impact which the media can have on any given population.
An excellent novel.....more of the same please.

Even penguins get the blues...

This is a quality read. Achingly funny and painfully sad, the often cynical and bitter but always cracklingly sharp story of 'Stuarts' adventures and misadventures with women, drugs and Australia are a delight to read. Never before have i felt like physicaly yelling into the pages of a book, but Robert Ross's character is so well written and so honest, you cannot help but care for him, want him to succeed and grind your teeth in frustration when he stumbles along his way, under the beat of the Ozzy sunshine, to thawing the iceberg around his heart. This book certainly warmed mine.

The one that Nick Hornby let slip through his fingers !!

Wow, what a great read ... funny (make that laugh out loud, embarass yourself on public transport, funny), moving, insightful and incredibly entertaining ... it's hard to imagine any book more ripe for movie treatment than the story of Stuart, Leo, Chibbie and Anna (oh, and not to forget Henry the penguin!)!!

We were given this gem in a party goody bag, but quickly this unknown treasure became the favorite book of our first daughter and later our second. They listened to it intently already by 4 months old. The colorful pictures and great sound effects and cadence are wonderful. We also read our copies into pieces. Best ages infant to 4 years. I wish it were not out of print!

Our daughter loves this book. It's not too long, so it's great before bedtime. There are few words per page, so our daughter gets to turn the pages frequently. Every page has a sound effect to read, making this an engaging book. Pictures are simple and colorful. We wish there were more books like this.

Great book for toddlers. They love the sounds and action.

This is a book written with empathy and wisdom. It has gifts to give readers who are traveling on the same path. It reminds us that we have the power to transform an experience--whatever the ultimate outcome--and create something of lasting value, in this case, a time of intimacy and true sharing.

This is a book by and for the partner of someone with cancer. In telling the story of how he and his wife lived together with cancer, and how the experience of dealing together with all the difficulties of her illness brought them closer together, the author comes to the startling discovery that living under the threat of pain and loss actually was like living in the headier times of romantic love. This book is very well written and, although it is the story of sad things, it is not a sad book. I strongly recommend this book for anyone sharing the adversities of cancer with another person.

Students, teachers and parents alike will appreciate the application-oriented focus of this book, which reviews basic geometry and trigonometric functions and pairs explanations of these basics with practical applications. This adds new life and depth to the process of review for those who've had the math before, but want to brush up.

Outstanding Trigonometry Presentation!

This is the best book out there on learning trigonometry. I especially appreciate the visually oriented focus. Each concept is described in all its forms, such as sine. Do you know each of the different ways sine can be described? Like the other Master Math books by Ross, the topics flow logically and are in context with what precedes and follows. It is thorough yet concise, and packed full of everything you, as tutor, or your kids need to know. The real world and fun applications are wonderful! The information is explained clearly and in a way that makes sense, so that a given concept is explained in such a way you understand what is being discussed rather than just memorizing formulas. What a breath of fresh air after the often-confusing text books I was and my children are given in school. I really feel I understand trigonometry after reading this book! If I were going back to school, and taking math or science, this book would be in my backpack. Also recommend: Master Math: Geometry. Master Math: Algebra. Master Math: Basic Math and Pre-Algebra.

I bought this book and Trignometry for Dummies to help me prepare for my first trig exam in college. My professor is good, but his explanations aren't always clear and I really needed something to bridge the gap. This book does an excellent job of explaining not only HOW to do things, but WHY. It's even better than the textbook I was required to buy for the class. As for the other book, Trig for Dummies, it's just doesn't hold a candle to this one.

In January I discovered Missy Laws is the same person as Charlotte Laws. She is a politician in my area in Southern California and has written fascinating articles. I read her column each month and have heard her speak. So I bought this book used. It was a fast read and filled with interesting often outlandish stories. It seems good for anyone looking to be successful. It basically tells how to use the back door to get a job or become an actor or sell your writing or become a top executive in a corporation. It is about schmoozing with the right people and getting on the A list and being heard by the influential types. It sure seems Charlotte Laws has done it all. Good book.

A Book That Actually Works!

Meet the Stars is full of insightful tidbits about mingling with those in the entertainment industry. Curious to discover whether the techniques suggested by author, Ms. Laws, actually work, I sought a date with my favorite actress. I must admit I was a bit skeptical as this book's publication date is quite ancient and I assumed the information would be out of date. But lo and behold, I met the actress of my dreams -- although could not persuade her to go out with me.

Ms. Laws does not discount the import of perseverance so I continue to pursue this goal. It has now been 18 months, and I must say that I have established quite a good friendship with my actress friend although have not yet had a date. (I am omitting her name out of respect for her privacy) But I do not give up hope. In the meantime, I've had the opportunity to meet many famous people by adhering to Ms. Laws' techniques and many other attractive women. I'm very impressed with her book and believe it could be of benefit to others.

A Labor of Love!

Review Date: 2005-08-09
"My Life in the Trenches" fits the criteria of being a labor of love, since it took 7 years to complete as it was interrupted by 11 major operations. On numerous occasions I wanted to cease writing this book but thanks to family and friends, I was given the support to carry on.
"My Life in the Trenches" details my years teaching in one of this nations most dangerous neighborhoods. The reader will laugh, cry and at times feel that what they are reading,is beyond the realm of reality.I guarantee the reader that every word of this tome is the truth. Every name in the book, including yours truly, was changed, due to the possibility of physical reprocussions.
Our greatest natural resource, our children, are being cheated out of the quality education they deserve. This book will tell you the truth about what is occuring in our educational edifices. It may leave you with a unsavory taste in your mouth, but the truth must be told!
It is this system, that basically destroyed my life and my family unit, as I once knew it.It is a gut wrenching account of what is going on in our schools today. When drugs, sex, violence and so much more, were encapsulated in our country's "Ghettoes," few people cared. Now that these cancers have permeated every neighborhood in this great country of ours, our people are crying out for solutions which still have not been addressed. I, Sam Ross, will address these issues. You might not like what I have to say, but at least you'll know it came from an insider who cared, and still cares, about our kids.
It is time for a change or we will be remembered as the generation that failed our children's educational needs. Read this book! I guarantee you that you will never forget it!

This is book 2 in the Wagon's West series.

The wagon train is now heading into new territory for them. They are on the way to Oregon and are leaving Independence, MO behind. They are also now being led by Whip Holt. They are traveling through Nebraska and continuing westward.

This is the story of their struggles against the British & Russian forces trying to keep them for making the trip as well and the environment and Native Americans.

This book is one of the 6th printing from back in the late 70's. If you are interested in the settlement of the American West this is one series that you need to revisit.

Forging The Oregon Trail - Outstanding Historical Fiction!

Review Date: 2004-07-03
"Nebraska" is Book 2 in Dana Fuller Ross' magnificent "Wagons West" series. In 1837 the United States was experiencing its first financial depression. Banks were failing, factories closing, and farms were being foreclosed. US citizens were increasingly hungry and dispossessed. Out of a population of 16 million, a quarter of a million were unemployed. People by the thousands were moving West to settle the wilderness and make a new start in life. Former US President Andrew Jackson, new President Martin Van Buren, and financier John Jacob Astor decided to assign mountainman and weathered veteran Sam Brentwood and his partner Michael "Whip" Holt to form the first wagon train of pioneers with the purpose of crossing the North American continent and settling the Oregon Territory. Imperial Russia and Great Britain were also determined to claim the Oregon Territory for themselves and planned to do everything in their countries' power to sabotage the United States' effort.

The caravan now included 500 people and their horses, oxen and prairie schooners. Having reached the frontier town of Independence, Missouri, Sam Brentwood and his new wife leave the group to open a trading depot to supply future pioneers and wagon trains. Wagon scout Whip Holt now takes over as wagonmaster and the legendary group begins to move across the Great Plains to the Rockie Mountains on the second stage of their journey. They are set upon by hostile Indians, British and Russian spies, accidents and illness, and the petty bickering that comes from interacting with the same people day after day, along with the monotony of the trail. Relationships and rivalries are formed which prove to be every bit as exciting as the journey itself.

The characters are outstanding and extremely realistic. The author vividly brings history to life in "Nebraska," as in the other books in the series. And the politics behind the settling of the West are fascinating. As one would expect, the novel is chock-full of adventure, hardship, courage, love, loss, tragedy and triumph. Many details have been taken from actual diaries and journals of early pioneers. Once you start this book you won't be able to stop until you have read all 24 novels. The next one is "Wyoming," and deals with the third leg of the trip -wintering in the Rocky Mountains and the move to Oregon. Very highly recommended!

"Nine... Ten... and Out!" is a book full of drama, comic touches, sadness and joy. What goodness, strength, and innocence that is the man Emile Griffith.

And then tragedy... as in the documentary (Ring of Fire), so in the book: when Emile meets Benny, Jr., 40+ years later, it is hard not to be moved.

I have to confess that prior to "The Ring of Fire," Emile Griffith's sexuality never occurred to me, one way or the other. I was also unaware of his later career as a trainer, and knew nothing of the mugging, nor the matter of being generous to a fault, to his very own detriment. What is shown is that Emile seems very capable of making the most of what he has, with a smile, and that ain't a bad thing (forget what any of the so-called Elitists would say).

While it's sad to read about the mental deterioration, and everything that can be inferred therein (boxing, mugging, age), it's clear the last thing Emile would want is to be pitied. All said and done, I have nothing but affection and admiration for this truly great warrior who, as Ron Ross shows, also happens to be a very good guy.

The drama is delineated with strong narrative, sound judgement, moments endearingly comic, and with Ross's always very human touch. Who can ask for more?

This is a unique story of a remarable man--Emile Griffith, the Middleweight & Welterweight Champion of the World. Emile's story has been sitting there, waiting...waiting, just waiting to be told for years. I have always wondered who was going to be the one to tell it. I'm happy it is Ron Ross, a sensitive and knowlegeable writer and soul.

I have known Forshia personally for over ten years. Her story, as shared in No Secondhand Rose, is truly one of God's grace and love in action. Forshia's willingness to share her past, her pain and the private torment that lead her toward God is courageous and bold. Her story is an encouragement to all of us to persevere, to keep searching for the answers to our problems. Jesus Christ truly redeems and restores the broken-hearted. The authors struggles and depression and then her commitment and dedication to Jesus Christ was absolutely wonderful. The scriptures add such a meaningful touch after each chapter. Also her heartfelt prayer at the end for others to know this new life, because she knows it's the only way. This book is absolutely a winner!

I have read this book thru several times and have given it as a gift to friends suffering with depression. This book is written with elegant but descriptive simplicity that touches places in you that you thought you'd forgotten; that make you say "That's just the way I felt!" This is a story that demonstrates that no matter how deep a morass of depression and darkness one may fall into, Jesus Christ has the power and love to bring delivering healing and restoration, to lead into healthy relationships and to give a purpose and joy and anticipation to life. I say "Forshia, bring on the sequel!"
