I have become a Harvey Girl re-enactor with the El Paso Railroad Museum since January 2006, giving presentations & doing research. FAR FROM HOME is the main resource for Harvey Girl uniforms. Our number of re-enactors is increasing, so we now have begun monthly meetings to discuss scripts for presentations, costumes for the span of time periods that the Harvey Girls existed, along with participation in historical events with other groups covering a similar time period. In addition, we are collecting & exhibiting Fred Harvey dinnerware & Santa Fe Railway dinnerware & preparing/serving food samples from the HARVEY HOUSE COOKBOOK. Since I am a retired school teacher as of May 2005 & a nutritionist, this is a perfect retirement activity for me. Thank you Lesley for all that you have published on the Harvey Girls ! !

I've been collecting paper dolls for years, and this is one of the best books I've found. There are 6 dolls (4 women and 2 men) with a nice variety of costumes. The clothes are beautifully drawn and obviously well-researched (but kind of tricky to cut out). As an easterner, I know almost nothing about western history, and the diary entries that tell the stories of two sisters who become Harvey Girls are very interesting and definitely made me want to learn more about them.

I just finished reading this book for the second time. The best recommendation I have is that my husband, who does not read books, read this one in two days. It appeals to both men and women and has a great story. I am now looking for other books written by this author.

One of the best books I've ever read!!!

Fatal Volley is perhaps one of the finest books I've ever read. It is fast paced, well researched and completely compelling - I finished it in 3 days because I absolutely could not put it down. The author does an excellent job of moving from Nazi Germany to 1950's Chicago to modern day Las Vegas, always keeping the reader intrigued and truly interested in the development of the story and resolution of its the characters' issues. We've all wanted to slash the throats of nazis; this book lets us do it without getting our hands dirty. A must read for all literary enthusiasts.

I've been teaching graduate level project management courses for over a decade, and this book covers every important concept. It also provides the added punch of the financial perspective, offering financial tools and concepts which are vital for successful project management. This is the first text I've found that covers this area, and provides so much valuable information.

Students particularly enjoy and easily relate to the clever case studies. Discussion questions at the end of each chapter allow students to apply principles of project management and to share their own experiences and ideas about effective management of differing projects.

I was looking for a book that I could share with my four year old niece, and found this great book about Germs! My niece absolutely LOVES it! She giggles every time you say some of the germ names while reading the book. She asked everyone to read it to her over and over and over during my weekend visit. She couldn't get enough of it. And it's educational, which her Mom, the school teacher, loves. I would highly recommend.

We first got this book from our local Library because of the awesome pictures but after reading it knew it had to be one we added to our personal collection! Any time my 6 year old starts feeling sick, we pull this book out and it comforts him. He learned how his body's defences fight off the bug that gets inside him. We then discuss how the germ might have gotten into his body, and exactly how it comes out. Now that he can put a visual representation on what is going on, he is a bit more comfortable with being sick. I really LOVE this book!

Perfect for inquiring young minds!

When I saw this book didn't yet have a customer review, I felt compelled to correct the injustice. I purchased this book for my four-year-old niece and it has remained one of her absolute favorites for over a year now. Granted, she is a "just the facts, ma'am" sort of kid -- very interested in how things work, especially the human body. With space-age detail, Germs tells the story of Pox, a student at germ academy (along with roommates Pus, Snot, and Rash) who is learning how to make people sick. Not happy with his mission, Pox is sent to infect a little girl named Myrtle. When confronted with her white blood cells (an army of mini versions of Myrtle herself), Pox decides to make friends instead and opt for a non-infecting life of leisure inside Myrtle's body. While instructive about how we get sick, the book also is empowering in teaching about our immune systems. The pastel color palette has a retro feel, and the germs are cartoonishly gross -- perfect for kids who love to say "Ewww!" -- and yet Pox is adorably cuddly and cute. I highly recommend this book for any science-minded children out there.

Highly Recommended for Businesses Interested In Global Sourcing
Helpful Votes: 4 out of 4 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-27
This book would be a valuable resource for businesses seeking a good discussion of global sourcing and purchasing issues in today's environment. Written by three authors with significant practical experience in the global sourcing of goods ranging from raw materials to equipment and pharmaceuticals, the authors provide a well-organized examination of the many issues involved in global sourcing and purchasing.

This book has several major strengths. The authors' principal message comes through very clearly: it takes careful planning to make global sourcing a success, especially in the post-9/11 era. The methodology employed by the authors is also very effective-they walk the reader through the issues from the point of view of a typical manager, and provide concrete examples of the issues that the manager will likely face in the importing process.

Of course, compliance and logistical factors in the global sourcing environment are the major focus of the book, especially emphasizing the changed nature of this environment in the post-9/11 world. Individual chapters focus on topics such as transportation, US Customs issues, other U.S. government agency regulations applicable to imports and, of course, the security issues which have received so much attention since the events of 9/11. The book contains a good discussion of these issues and the main players that are involved in each area.

In addition, the authors do a very good job of challenging the manager to think through the involvement of the many internal players in the company -from legal department to marketing-which will have an important role to play if the global sourcing process is to be successful. The book also has a strong focus on controlling the costs and fees through proper planning.

Finally, recommendations are also included regarding methods to ensure that the company's planning and compliance processes remain up to date.

In terms of possible improvements to this book, several of the chapters would benefit by the inclusion of specific references to key internet resources. Several chapters do already include a number of website references, and additional internet sources are listed in material made available through the publisher's website listed at the end of each chapter. However, a more consistent referencing of key websites within the text of each chapter might be a valuable addition.

Definitive Advice for Global Sourcing

Review Date: 2006-01-10
This book is the most comprehensive text I have seen for sourcing professionals, who must deal on a global basis. The authors have used their extensive experiences and offer sound advice on how to cope with all of the changes brought on by the 9-11 events - across a variety of industries. Using many case examples and first-hnd experiences, they describe in a step-by-step manner what is involved in not just getting the best global prices, but how to make certain the goods are shipped in a timely and high quality manner. Moving product across borders has never been easy, but this book offers a current view and solid techniques for optimizing such efforts. It is recommended reading for any buyer seeking global sources without the grief associated with entering into such territory.

A Definitive Work on a Critical Business Topic...

"The subject of importing or exporting products into the United States is a highly-complex topic, sometimes handed off to outside third-parties to advise and manage. And yet, this area is so fundamental to the well-being of many companies that it deserves to be better understood by your own organization, regardless of whether you employ third-party help or not. Just consider this: failure to comply with the relevant laws and regulations can result in your company's trade privileges being revoked - dramatically affecting your ability to conduct business.

"Global Sourcing and Purchasing Post 9/11 is the definitive work on this subject, covering the topic comprehensively and in an easy-to-understand manner. The authors clearly demonstrate their extensive depth of expertise in this field. This book is a must-read not only for import/export professionals, but also procurement/supply management professionals, and other professionals seeking to understand this complex and vital area."

A thoughtful book about an important woman
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2006-03-30
Dr. Scheer has written a thoughtful book about an important woman who achieved milestones in our country's history. Nellie Tayloe Ross was the first woman elected governor in the country in 1924, the vice chairman of the Democratic Party who campaigned for Al Smith in 1928, and was appointed to be Director of the U.S. Mint in 1933, serving in that capacity until 1953.

Living to 101, her life and times bridged the frontier west with the modern world. Driven by the necessity to support her family after the death of her husband, Nellie moved to the forefront of women entering the political scene on their own merit. She went from frontier wife and mother to governor lady of Wyoming, and then to a full career in Washington D.C. She was a regular speaker on the Chatauqua circuit and traveled the world well into her 90's.

Nellies' story is a personal inspiration, particularly because most of her achievements came after she turned 40. I have been dining out on Nellies' story since I read it, and would recommend it to anyone.

Govern Lady: The Life And Times Of Nellie Tayloe Ross by Teva J. Scheer (Adjunct Faculty, Graduate School of Public Affairs, University of Colorado at Denver) is an informative study of the inspirational life of the first female in the United States to be elected state governor in her own right. Governor Lady brings the reader into the time when women were just being granted the right to vote, and the intriguing story behind one of the most famous political figures of the first enfranchised generation of American women. Very strongly recommended reading for its interesting story of an intricate mind-set and value cast of such a powerful woman in American history, Governor Lady is of particular interest as an addition to Women's Studies, Political Science, American Biographical Studies, and Western History collections.

"How did such a milestone of women's political rights come to be overlooked? ... Not a single full biography of this remarkable woman has appeared before now. Happily, the long wait has been well rewarded. Teva J. Scheer's biography is thorough, scholarly, and fun to read...
Scheer's biography even-handedly examines the whole of Ross' long life, from her family's travails during the Civil War to her death in 1977. The author is especially to be commended for searching out archival collections, including not only Ross's papers, but her secretary's, Eleanor Roosevelt's, the DNC's, Sue Shelton White, and many others. Scheer considers the domestic image as a wife and mother that Ross cultivated, but did not always live up to. She evaluates Ross's accomplishments as a politician and as an administrator. She places the nation's true first woman governor in the context of her time. By doing so, Scheer demonstrates both how much societal expectations have changed for women and how little their political opportunities have expanded. Scheer has produced a wonderful biography of an unjustly neglected American political figure."

This is basically GURPS Magic, book 2. It provides great additional material in the way of new spells for the current colleges of magic such as the Elementals or Necromancy. In addition, the new schools of magic (Gate and Tech magic) are interesting new additions. This gives your characters the advantage of not only having the right spell for the right occasion, but also having a selection of tricks up their sleeves.

A must for any serious user of GURPS Magic.

Let me make one thing perfectly clear: This book is a companion volume to GURPS Magic. In order to fully appreciate (and make the best use of) this book, you need GURPS Magic as well. Now that that is out of the way, on to the praises. This is where you will find the odder and more esoteric spells (as well as some of the more powerful ones) that Magic just didn't have room for, or that handn't been thought of yet. Some of these spells are exceptionally powerful, others are just plain sneaky, but all are useful. As I said before, the odder corners and more advanced levels of magic are more fully represented in this book, along with optional rules. Here you will find things like techno-magic, radiation spells, acid spells, spells to literally rain fire down upon your foes, a spells to create an imprisoning circle around your foes, spells to fascinate and control your enemy, shapeshifting spells, elaborate illusions, divination spells, and even a spell to plunge a target into a morass of incapacitating pleasure.

That little list only scratches the surface, my friends. A few new schools of magic are added, and almost every one of the schools of magic presented in GURPS Magic has additions in this book, and all of them are worth looking at. If you want to be the best magic-user that you can be, this book will help you on your way.

The author is not wrong - it's a good book.

Used with GURPS Magic and the GURPS Basic Set it provides a complete, varied and well integrated set of spells for roleplaying. Without being tied to specific genres it still manages to offer a wide range of dramatic possibilies from which many a plot could be spawned.

First, a slightly-doctored Bible story (e.g., after Adam and Eve eat the fruit, they lived happily ever after; the lions put ketchup on Daniel before they ate him; Goliath and David became friends) - followed by a big "HEY! That's NOT what the Bible says!" - and then the REAL story, with a to-the-point message. (And, at the back of the book, excerpts from the relevant Scriptures). Stories go from Adam and Eve to the Resurrection of Jesus. Great learning book to read to young children, hilarious illustrations - you'll love it!

Bible Stories With A Twist

What a great book to read aloud to your children or grandchildren. At first these stories recount the traditional Bible stories, then it turns with a different ending.

For example in the story about the birth of Jesus Christ. The book says, "This baby named Jesus was God's Son. Mary knew Jesus was a pretty special kid." Then you turn the page and it says, "So she hired a big-shot agent, held a huge press conference, and told the world of the newborn King of God's people." You turn the page and have the huge words, "Hey, That's Not What the Bible Says!" Then it gives the biblical end to the story about Jesus' birth.

The artwork and the words combine to make this book a winner. Kids will sit in anticipation and at the appropriate place say aloud as you read it, "Hey, That's Not What the Bible Says!"

Bill Ross has created a winner with this book.

A 7 year old loves this!

One of the things that frightens parents most is a stranger kidnapping their child. God forbid that it ever happens to you because if it does, you will join thousands upon thousands of parents all over the world. Your anguish will know no bounds.

What can you do? It is mandatory to home school all your children with how they should react if and when a stranger approaches them.

This author, who obviously is a young mother herself, has given all new mothers some very practical and vital information on how to protect the safety of your children among strangers. She does it in storybook form that you must read to your children at a young age.

If you are a new parent, you should read this first. Perhaps several times. Then, you should read it again and again to your children as soon as they reach an age of understanding. Bring the book out several times a year to make sure the message is getting home. Then, as soon as you child can read, have them read the book to you. That will cement the timeless advice into their minds.

Doing so just might save your child's life! Yours too!

A must read for your children!
