AIDS Fundamentals Science and Society is like reading about the background and history information in a "Dummies Guide to HIV/AIDS" book. The book is informative and incredibly simplistic, it's about as easy as it gets learning about such a complex subject. From taking the class at UC Irvine, I know that it definitely relates to the lectures from professor Hung Fan... The book is easier to understand than his lecture material!

A book that is continuously updated

An amazing book. I came to know it by being a student in the class that the authors teach at UC Irvine--AIDS Fundamentals (by far the most informative and interesting class I have ever taken). I read the second edition, originally--the great thing about this book is that it is consistantly updated textbook--if you read each edition as it appears, you keep up with the developments. This is a book to be read over and over.

Great for anyone!

This book is a must-have for anyone who works in health education or is a practitioner of any sort. Fan et al have created an easy-to-read yet detailed account of HIV and AIDS from the views of the epidemiologist, virologist, health care worker, psychologist, sociologist, and anyone else interested in the topic. I first encountered this book in 1999 as a student enrolled in a course on HIV and it's impact on our society. I now use it in teaching County sponsored HIV/STD workshops and mini courses to youth ages 13-19 and to professors and students at my university.

As a 1988 graduate and recent staff member at the Academy, I'd highly recommend this book for anyone interested in ANY of the military academies. I've heard a broad spectrum of opinions and advice concerning the Academy, and this book is right up the middle. It's written in plain English and leaves nothing out. So much of the challenge of an academy is the shock or disappointment of unanticipated challenges--but this book can lessen that shock. The testimonials from freshman cadets, upperclassmen, and graduates ring true and are an excellent aid to preparing for the Academy. The info on getting in is presented very well, and the advice for being sharp during the interview process is worth the price of the book. I'd especially recommend this book to people who already have an appointment or nomination, because it really helps get your head in the game before going to USAFA.

Outstanding book: clear, concise, and thorough. Anyone who is interested in attending the Air Force Academy should read this book. If you are seriously interested, read it several times. This book gives you the power to maximize your competitiveness for an Academy appointment, then gives you the tools needed to survive the rigorous Academy lifestyle. As an Air Force Academy graduate and Admissions Liaison Officer, I strongly recommend this book. It is a highly effective road map to achieving the goal of becoming an Air Force Academy cadet and Air Force officer.

As a young woman who is serious about attending the United States Air Force Academy, "The Air Force Academy Candidate Book" has guided me through the labyrinth of applying. In the admist of vying for the congressional nomination, and preparing physically, academically, and mentally, this book written by William L. Smallwood and Sue Ross, has given me advice, motivated me, and made my dream of attending the Academy attainable.
If you are curious about the Academy, I suggest you purchase a copy, for it portrays the school realistically. And furthermore, if you are serious about applying, "The Air Force Academy Candidate Book" will be the most important book you will have ever read. It was for me.

Great book.....Highly detailed deck plan. The Aircraft Carrier Victorious (Anatomy of the Ship) what about other aircraft carriers and amphibious carriers (British, American, Japanese)?

This is part of a series of books called Anatomy of the Ship. Like the others in the series it is a whole book describing one ship of the class in great detail.

HMS Victorious was one of a class of six carriers built by the British in the late 1930's. They were built in compliance with the Washington treaty of 1921 so were limited to 23,000 tons. Compared with American carriers of the time, the Victorious had an armored flight deck. This proved of considerable value when the ship was hit by Kamikaze planes while operating with the US 5th Fleet in the Pacific.

This book is largely a series of professional drawing of the ship (122 pages), combined with photographs (15 pages). In addition there is a narrative description of the construction, modifications, and action life of the ship which served for more than 30 years and went through numerous refits as the planes became heavier and faster.

The detail personifies the series

This book is magnificent. This vessel served nearly four decades. The detail shows lines drawings of every refit, every aircraft, how the arresting wires and catapaults worked, the life boats and all armaments. Wonderful. The most photographs of all this series that I have seen.

We originally checked this book out at the library-but it was such a big hit we had to buy one of our own! That was a couple of years ago. Even though our now 7 yr. old son reads Magic Tree House and Junie B. Jones, he continues to come back to Alvie on a normal basis. He loves changing his voice for each of the characters-having the text in comic bubbles made it easy for him to see who says what. The pictures are alot of fun. We even had a Mulligatawny night using the recipe in the book!

Entertaining for parents as well as children

My 3 and a half year old daughter just got into this book and LOVES it. The illustrations are so well-done and interesting, with extra things going on in the pictures that you can point out, that it is a pleasure to read (again and again) even for an adult. The story is simple and funny, but you don't feel like you're being dumbed-down-to. And it's great for doing the different characters in different voices, if you're into that.

I really enjoyed this in-depth biography of the late Herb Brooks. The book provided information into the psychology and methods of a mysterious, complex human being who was clearly a master motivator and obsessive in his preparation. it provided wonderful insight into a true coaching legend. I recommend it to any hockey fan.

Mr. Bernstein did an incredible job of not only showing the talent and skill that Mr. Brooks had building the 1980 Olympic team and taking them to victory but he also was able to show the real Herb Brooks. I say this for in the mid-80s I worked at a hardware store near where Herb lived and on many occasions he'd stop in and pick up supplies or get keys cut and every time he stopped in he'd always be open to chat or sign autographs for as many who would hold out a slip of paper and a pen. A few years after that I was leaving a video store and he asked me how I liked a car I had recently purchased. All of these fond memories came back to me as I read this book, but this time it was almost surreal to think that someone who did so much and accomplished so many things would care enough to do these things for a person working at a counter or walking out of a store. This book put all of these things together and truly celebrated a person who meant so much to so many people of so many backgrounds for so many different reasons. It was a pleasure to read and I would recommend it to anyone, if you're a hockey fan or not, you will love learning more about a man who was a true hero.

This book, in addition to the first volume, is an outstanding reference for coleopterists and general entomologists. It provides one of the most accurate keys for identification of families, and it comes with very well pics/draws to help the reader to identify the sp(p).
I highly recommend this book (PLUS volume I).

This book and its first volume are very useful both for amateurs interested in beetles, or for coleopterologist that seek a general handbook on beetles families.
Each chapter corresponds to a family, and have been written by specialist on that specific group.
The drawings could be better in some cases, but in general is a very helpful and user-friendly book on Coleoptera.

Hi, my name is Cassandre and I bought this book about a year ago when I first started getting into yoga...it sounded great for me and my husband to turn it into something more fun! I can't tell you how much you will love this book if you are sharing yoga with a loved one. My sister snatched mine off my bookshelf one day and said she would borrow it and now refuses to give it back she's having so much fun with it! It has lovely photos, clear descriptions and great yoga positions that channel amazing energy between you and your mate! It is completely user friendly and can be understood easily for a beginner to a pro at yoga. It simply offers a few more additions to yoga that can include your lover for a completely sensual experience! At any rate, I am now buying myself another copy...these are things I do not want to forget! Wonderful Book! Highly recommended!

i am a choreographer, and i bought this book in 1997 during a trip to d.c. my idea was to create transitions to get from shape to shape, so that a really romantic/sensual duet would evolve from the photos.

the images are well designed -- the lush, warm colors evoke a romantic setting, and the models are beautiful. the instructions are clear, and the illustrations demonstrate anything that might be confusing. it's a wonderful book that will get your creative and bodily juices flowing ;)

I found this book fascinating. It is amazing that while trying to recover from brain surgery to be cured from epilepsy, a secondary condition can develop (depression) which is also a huge hurdle to get over. How the human brain is so vulnerable. This book is a very honest account of the authors struggles with both conditions which brought up some deep underlying emotion for me. I wish the author and his family all the best. Carolyn (New Jersey)

Stuart is Magnificent!

Thank you Stuart for sharing your heartwrenching story with us and breaking down the barriers of your neurological disease in your fantastic, must read book, Beyond My Control. The moment I started reading your book, I could not put it down and I felt I was going through surgery with you! It was interesting to learn how much work is needed in the medical field to diagnose neurological disorders before it tears one's life apart!

Having braved the storm until you met medical competency is a testament to your strength and character, for few could have survived what you went through while holding down a business and family. I am so glad you are alive. You are truly a medical miracle and your incredible story will undoubtedly be a benefit to us all.

Having read Beyond My Control (twice now), I sincerely feel it belongs at the top of the bestseller list, and in medical journals around the world. You answered questions that many have been seeking for years about seizures and neurological diseases of the like. Doctors' in training could benefit a great deal by this wonderful book. I purchased my second copy today to pass on to friends!

Thanks Stuart for a courageous story of strength, courage and extreme bravery. You truly are my hero and many more!

To share his personnel battle and thoughts during his struggles with epilepsy..Stuart managed to keep his sense of humor and strength. His emotional journey is one of the most realistic, detailed trips involving a fight against an illness I was unfamiliar with. I had to read his story twice as we all miss things the first time around. He is a man of determination, yet humble in his battle. The book at the same time is a love story, between he and his wife, Lisa. I believe if not for her strength and love, this book may not be here to educate and give us strength in battle against medical odds. I experienced sorrow, as well humor in this wonderful book. I recommend "Beyond My Control" to any person battling medical issues, and to any person in need of a little strength. This book is a Hoozey!!

Thank you Stuart, for sharing a deep meaning personnel journey of strength and love. Carol

Birds of Seattle and Puget Sound is our most used identification source. We are beginners, and get confused with tomes which identify every bird in North America. This little book brings us the instant joy of identifying our flying guests while they are still at the feeder or bath. We appear to be "experts" to our house guests who marvel at the variety of birds visiting our yard.

Finally - a great Birds & Bees for boys

After starting with my daughter on "The Care & Keeping of You" (by the American Girl Co.), I really wanted to find a book for my son. He is almost 11, and things are starting to happen. This was the first book that tactfully goes thru all the changes & challenges that face pre-teen and teenage boys. I was very suprised at all the areas that are covered - even more than my husband or I would've thought of talking with him about. If you are going to start with this book with a pre-teen, I would just caution to either wait a little, or read thru the book yourself first. I felt it was more geared toward either a more mature pre-teen boy or the actual teenagers. I purchased the "Bloom" book for my 9-year old daughter at the same time. The American Girl book is just the right stage for her. I will be waiting a while before we start on the "Bloom" book for the same "maturity level" reasons.

AWESOME BOOK! But why did it have to end?

You will have absolutely NO REGRETS buying this book.

It is an awesome book written creatively in a way that's entertaining for a teenage guy to read (I'm 15). It covers topics from what changes our body is (has; will be) going through, girls, sexual purity, school, music, tv, the internet, money, and much more! With so many topics, nothing is left out for a teen to know (and of course, we can always head to the Bible if there is something not mentioned in the book).

I've learned something new every chapter about the Lord, and how he wants me to act (and I've read the Bible through and through), and I'm sure I will constantly refer back to it when I need help. It's an amazing book.

Boom: A Guy's Guide to Growing Up is not only a great read, but looks beautiful on the inside, and by simply flipping through a page or two, you can see colorful pages with fun graphics that relate to the topic. But the only problem I had with the book was how abruptly it ended...but really...that only motivates me to search more for a closer relationship with him.

This would make a WONDERFUL birthday present for any age of teen or graduation gift for a teen going into high school. (My recommended age, because this is the time period when I read it, and I'm not sure if I'd have been mature enough to really dive into a stronger faith (and fully understand everything) with the Lord a year or so ago...but then again...all people are different, and, as I've said, this is a GREAT book for any teenager.)

Oh, and if you happen to be a youth pastor...This would be an excellent guide on how to instruct teens. It goes over many topics that matter to teens, and, all that aside, it's a fun read.

Fantastic Book

I just ordered my son a second copy of this book. He read the first one so many times he literally wore out the binding. This book covers topics that are sometimes difficult for parents to talk about with their sons; it's very straightforward and clear, yet always from a Christian perspective. This book is not just for teen boys, but for their parents as well; it opens the doors of communication on these difficult topics and gives parents a helping hand in talking to their boys about growing up Christian in a secular world. We read this book with our son so we can discuss his questions, but it is so well-written and appropriately presented that a parent can be confident that their son is getting solid, spiritually-based information.
