Nora By: Jeffie Ross Gordon, this has been one of my favourite books I have read. Nora is a great character. Also a perfect example for those who think that money is everything. Nora learns that lying is not the best thing to do, she wanted to be wealthy, popular, but yes, she did became popular but in the negative way. Nora is in between two decisions either marrying the love of her life, but he could be a thief, her heart tells her one thing, her head another what will be her decisions? I recommend you to read this great book to find the exciting answer.

Although this isn't the best book in the series, I enjoyed it nonetheless. Nora is a good character and strong, like all the Sunfire heroines. The romance makes for some very sweet scenes. My biggest complaint about the book is that there is more about Nora's romances than about Nora herself. Amanda (in the other book) has a character, with or without Ben, but Nora's isn't nearly so apparent. It is a very romantic book, however, and I couldn't help liking it quite a bit.

Combines history, adventure, survival, and romance.

All the Sunfire books have history, adventure, and romance. But NORA also has survival in it. Nora is an Irish girl living in San Francisco in 1906. One morning their is a terrible earthquake. Is her family still alive? And the two young men she loves? Nora must survive the quake and aftershocks, and comes out of the quake stronger then before.

The WWII version of the Civil War's Private Sneden

The Doolittle Raid has always been a favorite chapter in history and Ross Greenings account of flying the Hari Kari-er (#11 off the deck of the Hornet) is an incredible new addition. More remarkable is his experience in the N. African and Italian air campaigns resulting in being shot down, capture, escape, capture again and eventual liberation. Because Greening was an illustrator, the book is full of his original work done during the war. In this regard, the experiences and parallels between Greening and Private Robert Knox Sneden of the Civil War are remarkable. Both recorded their respective combat and prison
experiences in journals and illustrations. The printing of "Not as Briefed" is excellent and Washington State University Press has done an incredible job. One can read 50 to 100 books a year, but it is only every 2 or 3 years that one finds a real gem. "Not as Briefed" is one of those gems. It is a simple and humble recounting of a remarkable life. Kudos to WSU Press and the family of Ross Greening for publishing such an historical treasure.

American Spirit of WWII captured in Greening's story

In my opinion, Not As Briefed is one of the greatest World War Two memoirs ever published. While every valiant hero of that war has a story to tell, few have stories as dramatic as C. Ross Greening. Greening writes his story in a fascinating style, captivating the reader and making real his experiences. His blunt, humorous recollection of events can make the reader laugh or cry.

Not as Briefed is the story of bombs over Yokohama, bail-outs over China, and a purple heart on the slope of Mt. Vesuvius. It is the story of a pilot who could use his mind to get out of trouble when he spent months running from the Nazis in the Italian alps. Greening made so many brushes with death that readers will wonder if they are actually reading fiction. But Greening was right in the middle of a brilliant history.

Once captured, Ross Greening put his talents to use in Stalag Luft One, and demonstated one of the finest measures of character ever to touch the thousands of POWs in Barth, Germany. Greening's memoirs are an important reminder of the price of freedom, and illustrate his own love for America that grew as WWII wore on. Not As Briefed is patriotic and moving, and ought to be rated by American readers as one of the finest World War Two documents ever published.

I enjoyed this book very much and would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys WWII stories. This book was an easy read and was filled with exciting and touching events. The personal perspective that Ross gave to the war and his situation made the book very informative. This is a book that you will read more than once.

A Fascinating World War II biography

The unpublished manuscript of this book was discovered by the author's neice many years after the author's death. The neice, obviously captivated by her uncle's writing and World War II experiences was motivated in spending 5 years putting together this incredible biography.

Her uncle, Ross Greening, was #11 on the Doolittle Raid. After surviving that assignment, we was transferred to the North African/Italian theater of operations where his B-26 was shot down and his story of evasion and escape from the enemy is what makes Hollywood Movies but don't wait for this to be made into a movie. It is too long and detailed for Hollywood but is a heck of a page turner. It is well written and reads like a novel. But as you read, remember this isn't fiction. This stuff really happened.

Greening was an art major from Washington State U and uses these skills throughout the book with hundreds of illustrations of the events of this story.

If you are at all interested in the human side of war, you will love this one.

This book gives children who are beginning to understand minutes, hours and days a good idea of the enormity of time. The drama of the story is captured in drawings of intense colors and engaging images. Each page allows focus on one idea, which is clearer, for younger children. The interactions between David and the kids, and the kid's reactions, are good. The main idea -wildness has wisdom- is well emphasized: even the mysteries e.g. how life began. The additional information at the end is a good reference for older children. Also, places to help the planet is useful.

I've long admired David Brower. And Aleks Petrovitch has done a great job illustrating this book and bringing David's thoughts to our next generation of environmentalists.

This is a good way to educate a child you know about the environment and why it is important.

I highly recommend it.

What a wonderful idea for a series of books. This is one of 50 alphabet books; there is one for every state. This one is packed with beautiful illustrations which contain hidden symbols, poetry, and tons of "unique to Missouri" facts. Don't just buy this one....collect them all. They are sure to be a valuable resource for teachers and parents alike. Despite it's ABC format, it is intended for all age groups.

This book is GREAT! As a school teacher, I'm delighted to have this book in my classroom. As a parent, I'm delighted to have it at home. It's an alphabet book, a poetry book, a textbook, and an art book all in one! Though I have lived in Missouri all my life, I sure learned some new things by reading S is for Show Me. I learned about the Kimmswick Bone Beds where mastodons used to live. I learned that nearly all corncob pipes in the world are made in Washington, MO! I learned about caves, springs, animals, ice cream cones, the Pony Express, the Civil War and so much more. This book should be read over and over because there is so much information that it just can't be absorbed in the initial reading. The illustrations are beautiful. Many of the paintings contain hidden details that my kids love to search for. The poems are fun to read aloud to young children and give them just enough information to spark their curiosity. But each page also has a sidebar of text that provides more in-depth information for older children and adults. S is for Show Me crosses all age barriers. I highly recommend this book to young and old alike, to anyone who is interested in the great state of Missouri!

This book is simply well done. I must say though, it is a bit misleading as it is not a simple ABC book even though it is set up in that particular format. It is so very, very much more. The author and illistrator have given us a wonderful oversite of a wonderful state, starting with prehistory and working forward to the present. The emphasis is on the outdoors of course, as Missouri, if nothing else, is an outdoor kind of place. The cities too have been well covered though, so there is something for everyone here. This book contains some pretty sophisticated information so, for the younger child, it might be a good idea to use this as a "read-a-long" book. The art work is great and quite detailed and fits the text perfectly. I have to admit, even though I am a native of this state, have lived here many years, I too, learned quite a few facts that I was unaware of. For an informative, well designed and fun to read book, I do recommend this one highly.

The magnificent illustrations develop great interest in the excellent poetry and interesting research material. Adults as well as children will gain much knowlege of Missouri from this informative and enlightening book. I cannot praise S is for Show Me too highly!

This is an excellent book on qigong. Probably the best qigong book I've ever read. I bought this book when I lived in Boulder, CO. The book's editors Ross and Michael Cohen lived in Colorado at the time, and practiced Yan Xin Qigong with our group in Boulder occasionally.

Yan Xin's lectures are full of wisdom. He's one of a kind. I feel he has a true scientific approach and does not seek to become famous or wealthy. Of all the qigong masters in the public eye, he really has the most well developed sense of scientific detachment.

If you can find this book, buy it. Only problem is, this book is out of print from what I understand. You may have to search a lot before finding a used copy.

I found that one can learn a lot about traditional qigong from Dr. Yan Xin's speech. He is very objective and knowledgable about traditional qigong. All the examples mentioned in the book are tracible with scitific proof. Dr. Yan Xin, unlike most popular qigong master, doesn't try to "sell" his own qigong method. He uses "I" or "me" very few times when he explains qigong, except telling his own stories. He encourages people to learn qigong with a scietific approach and attitude, which is very different from the other qigong masters. I am quite impressed about his medical knowledge and traditonal Chinese culture background as well.

If you want to see the power of qigong in a objective and scitific way, I recommand you to read this book.

Informative, and fun to read.

What a revelation! We have been told for years that our mind harnesses the power to overcome all. In Ross and Ronn's book, these principles are succinctly laid out with techniques and exercises directly related to race driving. I recognized many situations in my own racing and have used their exercises to improve my performance and confidence on the race track. This book is a must read for anyone in racing (or in life)who wants to ensure consistency. For those who think racing is all guts - you are missing the boat (or shall I say the checkered flag) by not reading this book! PS - They also have a wonderful seminar too!

In the olympics, studies have shown that those who practice mentally (visualization, psychology, self-talk, etc) as well as physically (actual physical training) do better than those who just grind it out on the training field.

In a sport where there is a fusion of man and machine, it is even more important to "Maximize Your Racine Performance" by adhering to the strategies such as what Ross Bentley has outlined.

If you're a driver who has reached a plataeu and can't seem to improve, there's a great likelihood that it's not more practice or track time that's needed -- but more mental practice. And that's cheaper, too!

Ross outlines great mental techniques in this book that are easy to follow, and very applicable to the sport of race car driving.

For a bigger picture on Mental Training, I urge to to also look at Ken Baum's The Mental Edge. Then make sure you have this book by Ross to have mental training specific to race car driving.

Highly Recommended!

A Man Out of Time

Review Date: 2003-04-04
The Time Traders (1958) is the first novel in the Time Traders series. In this original version, Ross Murdock is a young man with a bad record. While in detention, he is subjected to a series of psychological tests and, when called back into the courtroom for sentencing, he is offered a chance to volunteer for an unidentified government project as an alternative to Rehabilitation.

Ross chooses to volunteer and is turned over to someone called Major. He plans to run at the first opportunity, but the Major takes him up to the roof of the building where they are picked up by a helicopter. They land on an airfield, change to flying suits, and leave in a sleek flying machine that departs straight up. By the time that they reach their destination, Ross has learned that the Major is named Kelgarries, but has no idea where they are, except that it is thoroughly covered in snow.

Within the base, Ross is subjected to a series of tests, including a full day of physical examination. The rest of the time he spends in a cell-like room by himself on a very comfortable bunk. After the speaker in his room brays an announcement in the Major's voice, Ross is startled to see the opposite wall disappear, revealing an outdoor scene with mountains and fir trees, the scent of pine trees, and the moaning of the wind.

He hears a wolf howl, senses gray shadows in the trees, and sees a wolf come toward him, hears it growl and then sees it crouches down to leap. A bow twangs and the animal leaps into the air, then falls and bites at an arrow in its side. By this time, Ross has the blanket wrapped around his arm and is crouched down himself, waiting for the wolf's leap. Puzzled, he carefully walks to where the wall had been and discovered an unseen but solid surface at that location. He assumes that something new in image viewing has been developed and lies down to enjoy the remainder of the show.

Suddenly, all lights go out, leaving him in complete darkness. He feels his way to the door and finds it open. As he explores the corridors, he hears something crawling toward him, with frequent pauses and heavy breathing. Now the lights all come back on, temporarily blinding him, but soon revealing someone wrapped in bandages over his entire body.

Before he can move, Major Kelgarries comes running up and kneels besides the figure, calling him "Hardy". The Major reassures Hardy that he is safe and then tells Ross to go to the end room and call a "Dr. Farrell". Hardy is carried away by the doctor and two attendants, with the Major walking alongside holding Hardy's hand. Ross realizes that the project is important and has suspected that it is dangerous; now he is certain of that danger.

As he is contemplating the group around Hardy, his name is called by a dark stranger who identifies himself as Ashe and says that they have been partnered. Ashe states that the project is Operation Retrograde and then takes him to mess call. There Ross discovers ten men, with six being ordinary in appearance; two of the men, however, were clearly Oriental, with long black mustaches and blue tattoo marks on their foreheads and the back of their hands and the other pair are blond giants with long braids in their hair.

As they enter, another man -- Kurt -- calls to Ashe and asks him if he has heard about Hardy, saying that such injuries could occur to anyone. Although he is jeered down by the others, Ross notes that Kurt is a potential ally in escaping the base and agrees to meet him later.

From Kurt, Ross learns that the base has a technology that allows "taping" the characteristic of a person so that they can be traced anywhere. Kurt says he has a way to beat the taping, but needs a partner to escape. Ross is somewhat reluctant, so Kurt tells him that the project is sending teams back in time.

When Ross agrees to go with him, they immediately leave the base, wind through the mine fields, and steal a snow cat. When they reach their destination, Ross learns that Kurt is a plant for the Soviets and manages to wrest control from Kurt. Under the circumstances, he has no choice other than returning to the base.

After his return, Ross is cleared to know more about the project. It seems that the Soviets have discovered how to travel to the past and somewhen they have found a few superscience gadgets that have led to amazing strides in certain areas. The US has duplicated the time machine, but still has no idea where the Soviets found the futuristic gadgets, so Operation Retrograde has been formed to search the past for clues. Ross is slated to join one such team traveling to Stone Age Britain.

This series has changed over the years to adapt to the political upheaval in Russia, but the real enemies in this series has always been the Baldies. When faced with a superior technology from a group of hostile aliens, the political differences between humans looks less important. Thus, the cooperation with the Russian time travel project has been almost inevitable by the logic of this series. It is merely convenient that the real world has, for a change, agreed with the Time Traders plot.

This series has always been more complex than it appears on the surface, for lurking in the background is a vision of the probability multiverse such as found in Crossroads in Time. Change the past and forever lose your future. Thus, it raises the issue of how much change is required to spawn a new timeline.

Recommended for Norton fans and anyone who enjoys tales of the past, the present, and the future within a single SF setting.

This is one of the stories in the series of the aliens known as "Baldies" and their science of time travel. The two major countries of the world are in a competition to control time and have been using technology recovered from Earth's past , where spaceships from another civilization of the stars have crashed.

This is a little 007 , rayguns , and historical facts , which collide in the Early European Continent.

The story deals with two main characters and one of them is Ross Murdock. The Murdock character appears in later books of this series.

Lots of good historical knowledge.

This was the first Sci Fi book I read 35 odd years ago. And it launched me into reading all her other stories and the other great Sci Fi authors too. It is fun to reread this book now for it takes place late in the 20th century. The Cold War fears of that time (remember it was written in the 50's) are all thru the book and very familiar to one who grew up then. This book and the following three are still very good reads. They are full of adventure and bold ideas and you do wnat them to end, And now I see where Ms Norton and another author are writing new Time Trader books. I cannot wait!!!

one of the first books that I read as a young man which was so well thought out and understandable, when it came to science fiction. the only regret that I have is that she waited so long to contine the serries. Lost in the distant Past, the hero of the novel must use his wits and endure great phyiscal pain to defeat the enemy.

Bob Ross deserves praise, not only for his service as a combat aviator and leader but also for taking the time to pen this excellent memoir of his career. The title is apt. He pays tribute to those he served with, gives full credit to those behind the scenes who kept the planes airworthy, and along the way reveals what it means to not only send others into battle, but to go with them. He is candid with his opinions and having done two tours in Viet Nam, is more than qualified to back up anything that he says about the conduct of the war. He sought combat, volunteering for it twice, and became a squadron commander. He was also shot down twice.

This is an engaging book on many levels. It's a great story of both war and test flying. It has humor. It is thoughtful and at times very articulate. It distills in simple terms what being a leader means. All of this is done in an easy, conversational style. One thing is abundantly clear: he's proud to be a warrior. He's grateful to have served with others of that elite brotherhood.

He says that his favorite missions were those where he helped troops in contact. Those of us who received that help will be forever grateful! To you, COL Ross, may you never have to buy another drink. Hoo-yah!

Ross Campbell's work never ceases to impress... Wet Moon 3 picks up where the last one left off, and the series just seems to get better with each new volume. The art is beautiful, the story captive, and I'm looking forward to another installment in the future. R.C. is one of the best out there, so if you haven't read any of his work yet, get to it! You won't be disappointed!

...is essentially like the first two. Very little plot with heavy focus on the character's ever evolving sexual tension and emotional states. Beautiful shading work, as is typical of the first two books. Not digging the sudden huge, headlight eyeballs on Cleo, but I realize every artist goes through period of change, for various reasons, and takes their characters along for the ride. Myrtle is weirding me out something awful, and Trilby remains my favorite character out of the bunch.

And for the record, ST:NG is nothing to be ashamed of - wear that tat with pride.
