Brings to life the times and tragedy of Harry "Breaker" Morant. From his time in the bush to his execution at the hands of the British for allegedly shooting POWs in the Boer War. Even if it doesn't quite follow the facts, it's a great read !

While this is a very good read it does not equal Herbert's masterpiece. If you have only patience and energy for one of them then read 'Poor Fellow My Country'.

Stories from a future that has run amok

Review Date: 2008-03-03
I read Frederik Pohl's science fiction novel GATEWAY when I was a young teenager, so when I came upon this book of short stories by Pohl, I knew that I was setting off on a journey into a future world. In this book of two novellas and four short stories, the author envisions worlds that have proceeded to take on values that bring out extremes in the characters. For example, in the first novella, "The Midas Plague," consumerism is the one solid and overarching value of society. Pohl's story explores how a value becomes an oppression and the psychological ramifications on individuals and their relationships. The other novella, "My Lady Green Sleeves," looks at a society where a caste system is firmly entrenched and its effects in the microcosm of a prison. The four short stories are "The Census Takers," "The Candle Lighter," "The Celebrated No-Hit Inning," and "Wapshot's Demon." Each story looks at themes of unexpected consequences. What if the world were to advance efficiency as its prime directive? Could not killing a Martian be harmful to the Martian? This is good reading for all science fiction fans, but will also be rewarding for those who enjoy stories with a twist.

This book gives a basic description of the differences between the cars, for each year. But it is not a detailed technical description. Just a general discussion focused on the marketing aspects of the changes. The pictures are all black and white historical photos. I would have liked to see some color photos and paint schemes.

Great book! Unfortunately does not discuss Chevy's fine line of pickup trucks or panel trucks. Does - however - primarily through archival black & white photographs - show model by year - sometimes comparing with Chevy's competition for that year. I would highly recommend for Chevy enthusiasts. (Note: No color photographs.)

This was a great book, lots of really great car photos. It was packed with facts. I shared it with my Dad, a long-time Chevy man, and he loved it too!

Great for Evangelical Families

Written to be used with Christian children encountering mainstream (Brighamite) Mormonism.

This is a great book for Evangelical families. It requires careful parental guidance if used by members of any Christian denomination that has the Apostolic Succession and the priesthood; that is: Episcopal Church, Catholic Churches, Eastern Orthodox Churches, Oriental Orthodox Churches, Anglican Church, Assyrian Church of the East, Armenian Apostolic Church.

My wife and children are Orthodox Christians, I'm Roman Catholic, and another family member is Episcopalian. So, I used the book with my eight-year-old in this way:

1) We skipped the page on the "priesthood"

2) I emphasized the role Tradition and Sacred Scripture both play in Catholic and Orthodox theology:

2 Thessalonians 2:15-17
Therefore, brethren, stand fast, and hold the traditions which ye have been taught, whether by word, or our epistle.

Better by Leaps and Bounds

With Book 1, the Author has improved on his writing and story telling by leaps and bounds. We still get to enjoy classic fantasy thats not weighed down by cliche. Yes, Elves like bows, but there's more to it than that with B.T. Robinson.

This book chronicles a few groups and individuals, whose future is clearly tied, as they struggle both for their own survival and identity. If you want more of the plot than that, you should check out Book Zero first.

In this continuation of the story the reader doesn't experience the rough patches or information gaps that you sometimes got hit with in the first book. The writer has a much smoother connected feel here.

That being said you can't skip to this one. No really. Go read Part Zero first, it's good. You'll be well rewarded once you read this and tales to come.

My one complaint with the book this time around is geography. Even with a much better map that accompanies part 1, its hard to follow where places are characters are in relationship to each other sometimes. This is really more of a minor annoyance more than a problem.

So go read it!

A stark, potent read ...

I'm not sure why, but from the moment I began reading this book I was hooked. I read only a few chapters before I went to bed, but when I awoke the next morning immediately my mind was filled with images of deep woods, and I was gripped with a need to know what became of this fugitive mother and her etheral son. I found myself turning page after page flowing through the lean, haunting prose relentlessly seeking resolution, relief from the pressure which builds almost languidly to its unbearable pitch. A rare combination of the subtle and the stark, with deep undercurrents of truth. Its echoes will haunt me for some time to come ... (Note: steer clear of the dustjacket blurb, which reveals far too much of the story.)

This small format book gives a taste of what The Colorado Trail has to offer along its 470 miles. This should not be used as a guidebook, but rather a primer to single day trips along the trail. The information is good and will have the reader wanting more.
Happy Hiking!

Australia and New Zealand are lands populated by emigrants and this book reflects this. I was pleasantly surprised to see many Dutch names in this. There are a few Maori and Polynesian names but fewer than I would have liked. Ditto for Aboriginal Australian names. However the author does justify this using tradition. However some very common names have been missed out eg the Tongan "Anaseini" which is a translation of Anna Jane, "Lupe" which is in referring to another language but which is the Tongan equivalent of Ruth. The historical background of each name is given well. I do like the alternative versions including translations of names which this book gives, which I think is one of its strengths.
