Heinrich Heine is my favorite poet.

I have a large edition of his poems that I bought in Germany about 5 years ago, and which I have variously kept at my bedside, on my desk or on the toilet tank. I've studied his works, and I also like to go back at odd times and read and relish a couple of his moving short love poems or his pointed politico/historical observational poems. He writes like no other. I also love to play with words, and what Heine does with language--his words, his rhymes--is ingenious and delightful.

Heine was a Jewish German, born at the end of the 19th century in Duesseldorf, on the Rhein river. Even at this time antisemitism was pervasive in the German culture, and he ended up spending most of his life in Paris, although he loved and missed his "Vaterland" profoundly. Germany figures importantly in his poetry. A good example is "Deutschland, ein Wintermaerchen" (faiy tale), a lenghty and many-faceted allorgical tale with clever allusions to many historical events.

Some of his poems, on the other hand, are shorter and simpler but never boring--little surpises may await the reader at the end: "A girl stood on the beach and sighed forlornly to see the sun go down. My darling, be of good cheer: here it goes down, but on the other side it comes up again." Pardon my translation--much of the fun is lost with the rhyme scheme; but the point is that even beginning German students can enjoy this one.

And everybody will recognize Heine's "Die Lorelei", a lyrical and quasi-mournful poem which was set to music by Friedrich Silcher, and has become a well-known folksong.

In short, Heinrich Heine is a poet whose work can be enjoyed by both student and scholar. He is my favorite because of his adroit articulation and the breadth and depth of his brillant mind and his limpid soul.

This collection of poetry of Heine's is not translated but in the original German. It however, contains an English introduction with English notes on words in the poetry. Very bizarre publication.

I myself cannot read German (I plan on learning very soon) so I can't read the poetry now.

Timeless lessons on the Christian life

Review Date: 2008-07-16
Drummond actually calls the Christian life a life of mission as the Christian wills and does God's will. Drummond's sermons and writings may sketch an ideal life, but he is no naive idealist. His teachings are practical and insightful and come from a century-old perspective that readers today can benefit from hearing.

His sermons and writings cover a range of Christian topics centering on Christ and living according to God's will. He approaches the problems of sin and the hope of salvation. The life he professes is one that rejoices with the prodigal and takes up his or her cross with Christ. It is a life that relies on grace and learns holiness through obedience in waiting upon the Lord and filling one's life with the Spirit of Christ.

Drummond not only offers practical insights into Christian living but also writes deeply about Christ and the Father. Here is a portion that offers a glimpse of his themes: "To live greatly like Christ is not to agonise daily over details, to make anxious comparisons with what we do and what He did, but as much more simple thing. it is to re-echo Christ's word. It is to have that calm, patient, assured spirit, which reduces life simply to this--a going to the Father." (83)

I think this is a book that will lead any sincere Christian closer to the Lord.

Two introductions are included in the book that provide biographies of Henry Drummond that offer compelling reasons for examining what he wrote.

Shakespeare On Spirituality: Life-Changing Wisdom from Shakespeare's Plays

Quite lively, and quite interesting

Though largely forgotten today, Scottish-born Henry Drummond (1851-97) was a leading evangelist and theologian of his day. In 1873, Dr. Drummond joined American evangelist Dwight Lymon Moody (1837-99) on his campaign in Great Britain, and from there his fame spread. After his untimely death, his friends collected a group of his addresses, which he had made from 1876 to 1881, and published them. This book represents those men's labor of love for the great Henry Drummond.

I found these fifteen addresses to be quite lively, and quite interesting. I must admit that I wish that there was some way that I could hear Dr. Drummond give them himself. My favorite was definite The Eccentricity of Religion, where Dr. Drummond argues that true Christianity will appear strange and off-putting to the nonbeliever. I highly recommend this blast from the past to all Christians.

Good for general Flash skills

This is a PeachPit Press "Visual QuickPro Guide"--similar to their "Visual QuickStart" training book series, but aimed at more experienced users. The series uses a task-based training approach, teaching skills through short step-by-step exercises. This approach has some major drawbacks for me, although this particular book seems to have dealt with some issues fairly well. My first complaint is that task-based training tends to focus too much on quick, "surface" results without really giving an understanding of what is happening and why it works. This makes it difficult to apply skills effectively in future situations, or to know when they ought to be applied. A task-based organization also makes it difficult to use a book as a reference, since information is dispersed throughout the exercises.

I was pleasantly surprised with Macromedia Flash 8 Advanced in many ways. First, I found that the chapters had a good mix of theoretical instruction and practical exercises. Almost every exercise was accompanied by an explanation of topics: what might be new to Flash 8, how the techniques might be important in a larger context, and an overview of how they work. There were a lot of explanatory sidebars and tips that offered very useful, relevant information. I was also pleased with the indexing, and I was able to find information on several topics as I worked. Most of the step-by-step instructions were very general, giving a basic process without getting sidetracked into specific projects.

Overall, I found that this book does just what it claims to do: it gives good, quick explanations of some advanced Flash topics and skills, such as external communications, sound and video, and dynamic content, as well as complex handling of things like movieClips, text, and buttons. It does not offer much in-depth discussion on any topic, and it does not focus on any area of Flash development specifically, but it takes a very broad approach to expanding Flash skills. I should particularly mention that I wouldn't recommend the book to someone trying to learn actionscript, since the actionscript in the book lacks the depth or focus that can be found elsewhere (O'Reilly's Actionscript for Flash MX), and information is dispersed throughout the book. It also does not really cover Flash components. I would recommend it to Flash users who want to expand their general skills and (especially) keep current with some of the growing capabilities of Flash. The book also includes a CD with working files for the exercises and a trial version of Flash 8.

A great book for those learning actionscript

I really enjoyed this book. It goes in depth in covering the actionscript language for Flash 8, and starts off at a relatively slow pace so you don't feel overwhelmed. My only complaint is that it relies a lot (at least in the beginning) on using the script assist mode which I think is a waste of time for those trying to LEARN actionscript. In it's defense, the book weans you off it as it goes along, and I can see someone with no actionscript experience finding that extremely helpful. Knowing a decent amount of actionscript before reading this, I found it a bit annoying but like I said, it fades out of that as the book goes on. Great for learning the newer way to code, and gives a good basis to really use Macromedia Flash to it's full potential.

Managing Projects as a Consultant

Review Date: 2007-07-17
Many people look into becoming a consultant because they believe that they are going to be inundated with work (while still working regular hours) and make gobs of money. While there is work to be found and money to be made as an independent consultant, there are lots of challenges associated with the endeavour as well.

Those considering consulting must realize that as soon as they leave their regular job that job security is a thing of the past. Simply put, consultants are the first to be let go, the first ones to be blamed when something goes wrong, and the last ones to get recognition. Moreover, many companies limit what consultants can actually do (project wise and using legalities) so it can be difficult to gain the resources, networking opportunities, and future clients to keep your business stable.

Managing Projects as a Consultant is an audio recording of a convention lecture. The two speakers, both have practical experience as consultants, share with their audience the potential challenges and prospects of becoming a consultant. This lecture gives the listener insight into whether he or she has the personality, resources, and qualifications to become a consultant and also serves as an important resource for the individual looking for specific information on how consultants fit within other companies, how to find work, and what he or she needs to do to protect him or herself legally. At the end of the lecture, the speakers also take and answer questions from the audience.

I found this audio CD fascinating as I have managed many project for a corporation as an employee and also worked with consultants that were brought in specifically for other projects. I was quite aware of the expertise consultants brought to the table and also quite aware that they were not always considered as part of the corporate team. We all looked at these consultants with a wary eye. Casey and Bruce have managed to tackle some of the issues involved when transitioning from an employee to a consultant, and what to expect on the job. One very excellent point was the fact that you will likely be doing 3 projects a year for different organizations, and that relationships with each of the teams is quite limited.

Other excellent points for discussion included the marketing and sales aspect of being a consultant. Although they did not dig into the details, you are certainly directed the right way. If you are considering a career as a Project Management consultant, listen to this audio CD first.

Beware the Plat-Eyes

Review Date: 2005-10-29
Elizabeth Robertson Huntsinger published her first book of Georgetown ghost stories in 1995 and followed it with this volume in 1998. In many ways this book resembles it's predecessor except that the writing style is much better in this entry. It is indeed very obvious that Mrs. Huntsinger has grown as an author and that is quite a feat considering that her first venture was very well written.

Her first book contained hardly any first person accounts of hauntings and although this entry could use a few more of these eyewitness accounts they are certainly more in evidence in this book than in the last. There are a couple of chapters that don't deal with ghosts in a real way but those chapters aren't all that distracting and the chapter dealing with Hags and Plat-Eyes is completely understandable since these two entities are such a staple of Southern lore.

The area around Georgetown was a leading rice producing area before the Civil War and many of the stories contained in this book come from the old rice plantations of Georgetown County. Throw in a pirate or two, a haunted lighthouse and a headless British soldier and you have the recipe for a very good ghost book. One would have to wonder how this author could fail to produce an interesting book with such fine material to work with but I can assure you that many authors could fall flat on their faces with this material. Mrs. Huntsinger does an admirable job of telling these stories and she does so with the charm of a real Southern lady. She has an enthusiasm for her subject and a fondness for the area that come through loud and clear in her writing and this combination is always a distinct plus in this genre of book.

This book will definitely accompany me on my next trip to the South Carolina low country so that I can follow the directions the author so kindly provides to the sites she discusses. Then maybe, just maybe I will see the Terriers of Pawleys Island or the floating coffin of Kinloch Plantation for myself.

Even better than the original!

Our children's grandfather brought this treasure home as a gift when he visited Australia almost 20 years ago. Our four kids are grown, but when we are all home for an occasion, we still can sit and read out-loud from this delightful book. We have been known to laugh until we truly cry at the antics of these very human and endearing characters. I rate it with Winnie-the-Pooh as the best ever, for children AND adults.

We originally bought this piece of classic Austrailian children's literature back in 1992. That book has worn out from use and we are purchasing a second at the request of the children. It is similar to Winnie-the-Pooh, although Wombat can get a little stubborn sometimes. We find it very humorous.

You've heard the old adage that a leopard can't change his spots. Well, that bit of folk wisdom doesn't deter Oscar, a rather naive leopard who wants his spots gone. He comes upon a magic potion that can do just that. As with so many "magic potions" there's a problem - Oscar overdoes and pretty soon he's not spotted but striped, covered with plaid, and all sorts of ridiculous colorings.

Youngsters will smile and may also learn that it's best to recognize and be satisfied with who you are.
