A true story with a realistic lesson

Look before you leap. This bit of wisdom flows naturally from a pelican's adventures without any effort to be a little sermon.

K - 3rd graders are fasinated by making friends with a gentle wild creature such as the pelican in this story. Written by educators, the story tells of realistic adventures "Pop" had with a pelican which enjoyed treats on his dock over several years. The illustrations help keep the reader involved.

A bonus feature includes two pages of interesting facts about this type of pelican. Teachers and parents enjoy using the questions at the end of the book to help with comprehension. The book also presents good opportunities for vocabulary development. The book meets classroom requirements for state standards in reading, writing, science, social studies, and math.

A needed book for any Kentucky researcher

For the serious researcher of early Kentucky families, this book is a must. While KY was still merely Kentucky County VA, there were hundreds of petitions sent back to VA, each one signed by early KY settlers. This book lists in full the surviving petitions and all the names of the signers. It is invaluable.

A wonderfull book on pheasants and pheasant habitat
Helpful Votes: 10 out of 11 total.
Review Date: 2000-11-03
Every pheasant population has limits to its growth placed by its niche in a larger ecology. Only one large brained vertebrate seems unconstrained by the general rule. For those of us who want to know more about limits to the growth of pheasant populations, and about the life of pheasants at all seasons, Dr. Peter Robertson's "Pheasants" is a must buy. This is a brilliant book and is highly recommened

Bird and wildlife lovers who are not specifically interested in pheasants should read this book, not only because, as Robertson explains, good pheasant habitat is good wildlife habitat for the whole range of small creatures of the woods and fields. This book can lead to a deeper understanding of wildlife habitat in general, and of how a habitat supports and limits the populations of wildlife species.

This book is an absolute must for all pheasant habitat managers and their superiors in the state agencies. An understanding of the book's central themes could increase the reader's ability to identify the elements of good habitat, even when the vegetation is different from that described by Robertson. A careful student of the book and of local habitat might gain the skill of identifying particular habitat deficiencies which limit a local pheasant population.

Following the pheasant through a year in its life cycle, Robertson discusses critical habitat requirements in elegant and convincing detail. The life and needs of the pheasant in Winter are revealed. Robertson tells us what spring territories are all about, what kind of habitat is required for a good territory, and where and how far the hens go to nest. And Robertson explains the habitat needs of chicks, that they must have an adequate diet of insects in the first weeks of their lives, and how that is a critical vulnerability.

This book is absolutely up to date, breaking new ground in our understanding of pheasants. It is based on the latest research, much of it performed by Dr. Robertson and his colleagues. Dr. Peter Robertson, BSc, PhD, perhaps the world's foremost authority on pheasants, has performed much of his research as the Senior Scientist to The Game Conservancy's Pheasants and Woodlands Research Project, in Britain.

This is the fourth, and sadly the last, in John D. Robertson's excellent series of books on Chevrolet. As with his previous efforts, Robertson provides a plethora of photos from Chevy's archives that have never been seen before. He begins each section with a concise but not overwhelming overview, and then goes into his pictures with witty and informative captions. It's an excellent book for those who love Chevys. I'm just sorry that he's not going to do one for 1960s Chevys. Many of us boomers have fond memories of 60's Chevys, and would relish such a book. John, if you read this, please consider doing one last book on 1960s Chevrolets!

An engaging story that teaches many worthwhile lessons
Helpful Votes: 1 out of 1 total.
Review Date: 2008-06-23
Pierre's War is probably the best book I've ever purchased for our grandchildren. During the past 48 years I've purchased many books for our children and our grandchildren, but Pierre's War is the only book that explicitly shows a healthy, loving family dealing with severe adversity in a positive and creative manner.

Many books entertain, shock, frighten, educate academically, or stimulate creativity. Few books model how a family can deal in a positive manner with a disaster. After they finish reading Pierre's War, I believe all of our grandchildren will be better prepared to deal with whatever problems they may face in life. What our grandchildren will learn from the book will help them whether the particular crisis they face is a Katrina type Hurricane, the loss of someone they love, or some other disaster.

We recently visited our youngest son and his family in Virginia. I gave the children (ages 10 and under) a copy of Pierre's War. Our son's wife, Sarah, reads every night to their children. The night she started reading Pierre's War, I was in the living room rocking their new baby while Sarah was upstairs reading to their three daughters. After reading upstairs for a long time, Sarah came downstairs with a big grin on her face. She said after reading Chapter One the children begged her to continue and she finally told them she had to stop after Chapter Four. The children found the book so interesting and exciting that every night after that they went to bed quickly and begged for more than the usual one chapter limit.

As a parent and as a grandparent, I found Pierre's War a wonderful example of good parenting under adverse conditions. I hope our children and their spouses will be inspired to follow the examples of good parenting that are illustrated in the book.

Although the book is fiction, it is based on experiences that the author and her family had in France while France was under the control of Nazi Germany. I asked the author, Annick Shinn, if her mother had kept in contact with a family that had given them refuge while they were fleeing from the advancing German army. I should have known the answer. Of course they stayed in contact. Annick's mother wrote the family that helped them every year on the anniversary of the day they were given refuge and Annick is still in contact with the daughter of the family.

I plan to give copies of Pierre's War as gifts to both children and adults. What could be a better gift than an engaging story that teaches so many worthwhile lessons?

The Pilgrim goose - By Keith Robertson

Review Date: 2006-05-27
"The pilgrim goose" is a sweet, simple book that children who own poultry will enjoy. It is important to note, though, that the actual pilgrim goose breed's history in this book is indeed fiction, as the breed really was developed by Mr. Oscar Grow of Iowa in the 1930's. With this in mind, this book is still lovable and the plot well thought out. Keith Robertson, just as he did in the Henry Reed books, weaves a believable tale and is a master story-teller. I higly reccomend this book for children or teens interested in geese. Recomended reading level: 4-7 grades. A fantastic book! A must read!

Australia's finest lyric poet

Kenneth Slessor was Australia's finest lyric poet, the Australian answer to Hart Crane and maybe even Yeats. In poems such as the mournful, cataclysmic "Five Bells" and the soft- spoken and compelling "Beach Burial," Slessor establishes a high-poetuic voice that will make him matter as long as poetry itself matters.

The history of a country in a nutshell
Helpful Votes: 36 out of 36 total.
Review Date: 2004-03-11
This history of Portugal contains a remarkable amount of information for such a small book, small enough to go into your pocket or handbag. It covers the pre-history of Portugal and the founding of the country in the 12th century and its history all the way to the end of the 20th century. I like this book because it is so informative, concise and readable. It also has lots of illustrations including very clear maps. Another aspect I like in this history is that it is very objective, no bias in favour or against the country. This is the best history of Portugal I know and I would recommend to anyone interested in this subject. Great value for money.
