I bought a copy of this book before the advent of the Internet. I never paid so much money for a book, but never have I regretted the money I spent. This book follows the same itinerary (in chapters) of the ABC-series with the same name. I saw this series on the Discovery Channel many years ago and was very impressed with the content and presentation of information. There's always more information you learn while making a TV-series, so luckily we have the book.
The authors follow the route mankind took from the mainland of Asia to Southeast Asia, Australia, the America's and finally, Easter Island. The style of writing is very clear, the authors incorporate the newest discoveries that were done at the time of writing and debunk several myths on the way. Though Africa is not covered in this book, this is one of the best books I could recommend for people who want to gain a overall understanding of Indigenous People's life ways. This book will also be suitable for younger readers. My compliments to the authors!

An impressive and recommended compendium of thirty-seven poems by academician and author Laurie Robertson- Lorant, The Man Who Lived Among The Cannibals: Poems In The Voice Of Herman Melville showcases the theme of the 19th Century author of Moby Dick in original and deftly written verse. Melville Explains Why He Started Writing Poetry: While foolscap rolled out/lank corpses bled to white/I swam in volcanic seas/and tried to write//quill dipped in brine, a crippled bird/I toiled/the prose was all blubber/the black pots smoked and boiled//exhausted and drained/I spat out lines alone:/cannibal crunching words/of flesh and bone.

As a transportation engineering technologist, I used to have the old edition of this book, printed in 1976. No other book can beat this one when it comes to engineering studies. I know the value of it.As a matter of fact I want to get a copy of the current edition momentarily.

Overlooked Masterworks of Architectural Renderings and Landscapes
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 16 total.
Review Date: 2007-01-14
Anyone familiar with the early work of Frank Lloyd Wright, his Wasmuth portfolio, and the architecture of Walter Burley Griffin will know Marion Mahoney Griffin's incomporable architectural renderings. Like Julia Morgan and Theodate Pope Riddle, she was an extraordinary woman in the very exclusive men's club of turn-of-the-century architecture.
Those familiar with Mohoney's architectural renderings will perhaps question the tall, vertical format of this beautiful production. However, there is a virtually unknown aspect of Mahoney's drawings; and that is her "Forest Portraits". These magnificent renderings of trees are one of the most significant and unfortunately unknown endeavors of American landscape art of the twentieth century, and to encounter them is a delicious and unforgettable jolt.
This book/exhibition catalogue is a beautiful and scholarly production. Marion Mahoney, like Bernard Maybeck, was unfortunately and unwisely overlooked in "The Arts & Crafts Movement in Europe & America" (Thames & Hudson), and Mahoney is represented by a rendering of her husband's work in "International Arts and Crafts"(Victoria & Albert), two major exhibitions of the international Arts & Crafts movement that toured American museums. Maybeck is only given a passing reference in both books.
For anyone with a serious interest in American architecture, American landscape painters, and particularly the Arts & Crafts movement, this little jewel is essential.

The Basis and Structure of Civilization
Helpful Votes: 16 out of 21 total.
Review Date: 2000-08-29
The above would be an appropriate title for this concise and unpretentious account of human development.

My first reading of the book was many years ago and was invaluable in formulating an understanding of how civilization began and particularly in withstanding the nonsense produced by the present day "anthropologists" who make the definition of civilization a shifting target.

If this book were to be the basis of a definition of civilization it would begin a useful science of anthropology and a reaming out of the nonsense that has inundated this area of endeavour.

The style in which the book is written makes surprisingly absorbing and light reading considering the scope and weight of the topic .

The sombre title is witness only to an unassuming presentation of an Author sympathetic to his subject.

EXCELLENT! GET THIS ONE.

For a learning, growing harpist, this is an excellent book. This is not the book you turn to for simple songs, this is the book you turn to expand and improve your skills and to grow.

This has a great deal of information, and this is a practice book you sit down and read just as much as you practice with it. It has very good instructions and information on technique, on what things are, and how to accomplish them.

It is not merely for arranging, although that is here too, and especially if you have a smaller lever harp, you will probably need to arrange things to accomodate fewer strings (I have certainly had to to that.)

The information here can help you double your music library by teaching you how to take your simple song books and make more elaborate, fuller arrangements to expand the songs. It is also demonstrated within this book by progressive arrangements of songs which are very useful pieces to have in your repertoire.

It's simple. If you are a begginner or intermedate player and you want to improve your skills, get this one.

Excellent read for anyone beginning or on a spiritual quest
Helpful Votes: 3 out of 3 total.
Review Date: 2008-02-04
This book brought a lot of issues up for me. However, I have been able to reconcile them and have also incorporated what I learned from this book into my beliefs. There is a lot of ground covered with this book and only gives one an overview of very important aspects of Metaphysics, but it really makes the reader want to learn more. And the suggested reading list in the back of the book is priceless. I encourage all who are on a spiritual quest to read this book. And then if you would like some help applying all that you learned in this book, check out http://www.biglife.ws/group/spiritualsuccessbyaccident

While doing research for our local VFW, my husband found the following books quite helpful in getting information regarding prisoners of war, Michigan's involvement in the war, and the Michigan Sharpshooters (Indian).
