A fascinating book about a topic that not too many years ago was regarded akin to snake oil. At one point, all that was known about this subject was anecdotal. And since events like earthquakes occur irregularly, it was hard for researchers to systematically study this phenomenon.

But thanks to the authors, a large body of evidence has been collected into this text. It spans the fields of geology and seismology. The hope is that by methodically studying the gaseous outdiffusion from the earth, reliable precursors can be found. Even if these give only a few minutes warning, that is enough for critical power supplies to come online, lifts to unload, and other precautions.

The ever increasing cheapness of sensors and the increasing coverage of wireless networks means that the suggestions in the book might be adopted by dispersing a wide array of wireless sensors at earthquake prone regions.

An Australian genealogical bible
Helpful Votes: 2 out of 2 total.
Review Date: 2000-04-23
P.C. Mowle's, Pioneer Families of Australia, was printed in five editions between 1939 and 1974. It is a genealogical history of Australia's pioneers, focussing on families who arrived between 1788 and 1838, and who played a leadership role in opening up the continent. Consistent with this approach, and given the nature of Australian development, families listed tended to have agricultural, business, and professional backgrounds. Short biographies are included for many of the first two generations, but thereafter comment tends to be limited to a statement of occupation. Subject to family interest, the descendents are included up to late 1974. Details of marriages are also included, but tend to lapse after about 1955. The 5th edition, updated by L.M. Mowle, was limited to 1001 copies, and I am not aware of plans for an update. As a genealogical record of the first two centuries of European settlement in Australia this book is unsurpassed.

Great book! It's complete, full of conjugation tables. There is a long index with verbs, go to this listing and it'll refer you to a conjugation table, the verb you are looking for in conjugated in the same way as the one in that table. Besides it's complete in grammar .

For those interested (seriously or curiously) in Globalization this is one the central pieces to be read. The book provides a sociological framework for the analysis and understanding of the meanings of the term and how the world came to be as it is. It is a serious work, grounded on the most serious sociological thinking. In general terms, we could say that this work has a serious cultural perspective on the subject matter. The book has been translated to 6 languages (I translated it to one of them) and has been regarded as "a treaty" on the subject matter. The author himself has been regarded by scholars in the field as one of the leading theorists in the subject matter. My personal opinion is that this book is becoming one of the centuries masterpiece in the theorization and problematization of globalization. If you want to know more about the book, look for book reviews in the Sociological Abstracts or email me: barrosoj@hotmail.com

In this Orwellian story of a future that could both happen and horrify, a university professory is forced to flee with his wife from the government that has perverted for their own ends many of his own discoveries about mind control; a Fascist America now sets out to destroy him. Finding refuge with a group of freedom-seeking fighters in a world they call Amorphous, he is introduced to their leaders, their aims and the God Machine....a micronizer that reduced people and objects in size and helps them escape the dreaded police called the Rehabs.

How this secret world exists; the methods devised by its inhabitants to both survive and, hopefully to triumph; the lessons learned by both sides in the terrifying struggle between them...these are the exciting elements that fill this tale set in an all-to-possible future.

This has to be the best book on U-boats tactics to come out of ww2. The fact that Otto Kretschmer was the leading Ace of ww2 and led the way for others to follow makes this a must must have for my collection.

(highly recommend) true hidden heros of 8 men

The author, Mr. Gordon Robertson was my first boss after I finished the college when I joined ICG satellite service as an entry engineer in 1996 ~ 2000 where the company provided a satellite communication to US Navy aircraft carriers. At that time, he went through at least twice severe heart attack and hospitalized but he never lost his spirit of the man. He was a true patriot and my hero. He hated the word, "I" or "you" but loved the word "we". He was cursing like a hell but he was a man of honor. He told me all the time "adapt, overcome, and improvise!!!"
He always avoided talking about what he did to get his Navy Cross in Vietnam when I asked. He only told me two occasions only about how he got shot by AK47, which are covered in this book. I just can't believe he did these many missions in Vietnam and never said anything to me especially when I consider he liked to talk about a lot of things.
Anyway, I was truly happy to read this book so that I knew what he was really hiding that he was proud of through his life even after he passed away...

A Literal Explosive American Tale

Review Date: 2008-05-11
A very realistic exploration of a child making the difficult choices and following through. A true American hero with all the virtues and flaws of a real life honest child. A true Midwestern tale told with the innocence of a child wise way beyond his years. It is a true slice of life, pun intended, tale of the way things were in these long ago days during the post Industrial era of America told with the clarity of the present day author.

Seeding secrets revealed
Helpful Votes: 0 out of 0 total.
Review Date: 2007-08-27
Ron Robertson lives in Truro, Nova Scotia and has been growing flowers from seeds for more than twenty years now. He's the kind of garden writer we all love--the kind that takes the time to explain things and never, ever talks down to others. He's put his collected years of seeding wisdom together into the delightful Growing Flowers from Seed in Canada. This is a dandy book, and one I'll recommend wholeheartedly to everyone who's ever contemplated starting their own seeds--or to those who have tried and succeeded, or tried and been less successful at growing their own transplants. Follow the sage advice of Ron, and your flower garden will be turning heads too, of that I'm sure!
