It is easy to be successful with the book! Melodies are easily identifiable thus building confidence instead frustration that comes with the fluff that masks the melody as found in many other Banjo books.

Though Wines is renowned for architecture, his illustrations for Lear are emphatic of his talents as an artist; these are a combination of the beautiful line and sensuous watercolor qualities of Arthur Rackham crossed with the avant-garde and perverse sensibilities of Edward Gorey. An intriguing perspective on the poems of Edward Lear. Lear himself must have applauded if he'd had the chance. Provocative for adults, yet children will be tickled by it. Nice gift book. The title makes it suitable for all sorts of occasions.

Absolutely hilarious story of a North Carolina farm girl who moves to the big city of Nashville and decides the fastest way to fame and fortune is to knock off the would-be boy friend's rich wife so that he will get the money and then marry her. Loretta goes to the local voodoo women to get a potion because she is too squemish to actually hurt anybody. The characters range from goofy to lunatical (is that a word?), with Salley Lett, the New Age guru who runs a 12 step program for overcoming poverty, to Moses LaFayette and his wild brother Claude who are the sons of Gertie (the voodoo lady). The story is written in a very simple and straight forward style with few wasted words. Am really hoping there will be a seqeul and maybe a series of books with Loretta, Moses, Sally Lett and Gertie.

Teachers of electricity and magnetism will love this book. It's full of activities to help the students (and teacher) fully conceptualize electricity and magnetism. And the best part is the free interactive download which allows students to build all kinds of circuits on the computer!

This is a truly beautiful book of poetry. Towards the end there is a set of poems based on the life of Emily Bronte which is enchanting and heart-breaking at the same time. There is some very powerful music in this poetry, and it is infuriating to see that both of Newsom's books are no longer in print. If you are are a lover of gorgeous words I reccomend going to great lengths to find this book.

Amazon's page for this book misspells the last name of one of the authors. It should be SCHOLTE (not schlote).

I should know; I went to school with him!

and it must be a fantastic resource, inasmuch as Jan Aart was the smartest boy in school; but at $750 I haven't bought one yet...

Superbly, beautifully illustrated through truly exceptional watercolor paintings by M.P. Robertson, Meredith Hooper's The Endurance is the true story of Sir Ernest Shackleton's 1914 expedition across Antarctica. Shackleton and his crew of twenty-seven men fought their way through some of the most extreme conditions and hardships imaginable in a near legendary feat of exploration. This true tale of exploration, survival, and rescue will thrill young readers and is a very highly recommended addition to all school and community library collections.

Builds upon and supersedes authors' earlier book
Helpful Votes: 8 out of 9 total.
Review Date: 2002-04-04
This book is an extensive rework of the authors' "The Adaptive Enterprise", and in my opinion supersedes that earlier book.

Like the first book this one borrows heavily from the software engineering community to employ proven techniques, such as layered design, patterns and a component-based approach to infrastructure. Where this book extends and builds upon the earlier work is the emphasis on extending the corporate infrastructure into a meta infrastructure that is characterized by B2B and supply chains. As such it lives up to the title because the goal of the extended infrastructure is to enrich the value chain - or at least support the underlying business goals.

What I like about this book is what the authors propose is not only attainable, but makes good business sense. It starts with a 22-page introduction that clearly defines what is and is not infrastructure, and the concept of an adaptivity. These are important to understanding the approach that follows. Chapter 2, Laying the Foundation, quickly gives the basics for a layered infrastructure, develops a model for associated services that are needed to make the infrastructure adaptable, and drills down into service-related issues. I am not in complete agreement with the impact that this approach has on IT organizational structures; however, I am not willing to write it off as unfeasible until I have a chance to carefully think it through. The ideas do have merit (on paper) and are better developed in the first book.

Much of the rest of the book is a rehash of "The Adaptive Enterprise", but the material is slanted towards the extended infrastructure. What is important is the emphasis on patterns and components as frameworks and building blocks. Where the first book brought infrastructure management to a new level, this book extends it in a manner that reflects the realities of connected enterprises defined by supply chain management and business partners. Please see my review of "The Adaptive Enterprise" for specifics that apply to this book, and if you're deciding between the two books, this is the one to get.

Nancy Drew- the Eskimo's Secret, by Carolyn Keene, is a mystery story where Nancy Drew is trying to find her father, Carson Drew and the famous artwork, the "Tundra" which have disappeared. The "Tundra" is a very valuable Ivory carving by an Eskimo artist named Quinggoq. For years Franklin Cole, kept his eye on the "Tundra" and many other famous Eskimo carvings. To protect these pieces, they were hidden by Quinggoq, in the woods. The villagers of Seal Bay grew tired of Franklin Cole's manipulations to try to get these famous pieces of art. The villagers finally agreed to give Franklin Cole the "Tundra" if he would promise to leave the town.

After Franklin Cole's death, his widow sold the "Tundra" to Clement Steele, the owner of an art gallery and uncle of one of Nancy Drew's best friends, Alana. One day, Alana calls Nancy Drew to tell her that the " Tundra" has turned up missing from her uncle's gallery. Right after the "Tundra" was stolen, Alana disappeared too. Nancy agrees to go help find Alana in Victoria, British Columbia. While visiting the art gallery there, Nancy is warned by a letter to give up the search for Alana and that Nancy was in great danger. Nancy's search turned up Alana unharmed with Quingggoq's grandson, Ben at the Firebird Lounge. Together, Alana, Ben, and Nancy put their detective minds together with clues from her dad's phone calls to figure out where her father and the "Tundra" and the two culprits, which were Jasper Cole and Felix Borge, might be. During one phone call, Nancy's dad says that the only way he can return is by having Nancy give Alana to Jasper Cole and Felix Borge. Cole and Borge think that Alana has the secret to the "Tundra" and the other hidden carvings.

Nancy and Alana take a boat to an island where they think they will find Cole and Borge, Nancy's father and the" Tundra". On the island, they find the front door of a mansion unlocked. Nancy suspects her father is there. Once inside, Nancy was able to free her dad. Nancy, Alana, and Mr. Drew were able to tie up Felix Cole and Borge. Since Mr. Drew was had been with Cole and Borge for quite some time, he knew were the " Tundra" was. Nancy, Ben, Alana, and Mr. Drew escaped off of the island and took the "Tundra" safely back to the Steele Gallery.
The villagers of Seal Bay were grateful that Nancy Drew had solved the case of The Eskimo's Secret by finding the "Tundra" with its clues to the other carvings. Nancy was grateful to have her friend Alana and father back safely too.
