The book consists of a series of articles written by historians about their archival experiences. The articles present a variety
of issues historians must face when visiting archives. Some of the issues are quite shocking, and others are expected. Nevertheless,
the book certainly gives future historians tips on what to expect or beware of when visiting archives--whether foreign or
domestic.
This book is used for graduate level courses. The non-historical minded person can easily read this without complication. It is not a difficult read, and if your not a historian or student of history and want to grasps the process of historical research--then check the book out. I would suggest all history student who plan to move onto graduate school to check this book out. It will highlight some of the difficulties when visiting archives that you may or may not know. Some of the articles (accounts) are very interesting. After-all, the articles are accounts of a variety of historians experiences in foreign archives, as well as domestic archives.

there is not much published material on Arp still available...this book features insights and perspectives on his work which
are unlike those found in older books on the man...while there are some glorious color photos of wooden pieces and sculpture
(and many in b&w as well) the text is certainly the main body of this volume...I had little trouble finding a used copy in
like new condition and love re-reading this book...if you are an Arp fan this book will speak to you...a great companion volume
would be a used copy of "Arp" by Serge Fauchereau...there are many copies available online at very affordable prices and this
book is profusely illustrated with many color photos of marvelous sculpture, wood reliefs and paper works...also very highly
recomended!

Written by Edna Robertson (former Curator of Collections at the Fine Arts Museum in Santa Fe) and her daughter Sarah Nestor,
Artists of the Canyons & Caminos Santa Fe: Early Twentieth Century is an in-depth exploration into Santa Fe's rich artistic
history from the 1880's onward. From the cultural distinctions of Native American art, to names of great artists that looked
to the beauty of the land for inspiration, to the inception of an art colony with its first juried show in 1951, Artists of
the Canyons & Caminos traces a grand legacy, extensively reconstructing art history from a smorgasboard of sources including
quotes from popular newspapers. Black-and-white photographs and a beautiful inset section of 16 color plates illustrate Artists
of the Canyons & Caminos, primarily showcasing evocative pieces of art. A one-of-a-kind art history book, especially recommended
as a giftbook or souvenir for travelers to Santa Fe.

I have always liked this book as my favorite because it is the one that my relatives read who lived near the Bell farm in
Admas, TN. They knew the stories past down by their grandparents and parents so the story of Kate, the witch, haunting by
appearing in various ways as well as not seen at all. Several of my own family had encounters with the Witch. My great-great-grandfather
was Rev. James R. GUNN and my uncle's grandfather was Johnston who was John Bell's close friend. Both of these family farms
adjoined the Bell farm.
I highly recommend if you find a copy of this book that you read it.

Impressive writing, important story from 20th C Australian history

Like his protagonist, Victor Hall was apparently a police officer in the Northern Territory in the mid 20th century, so he
knew the material he is covering in this well-written tale at first-hand. In the short history of European occupation of aboriginal
lands in Australia, there have been many examples of the regrettable failure of the newcomers to even begin to understand
aboriginal culture. This is the background of this excellent novel, which nevertheless presents the aboriginal characters
in a very human light, by pointing out that they were also capable of malice aforethought on occasions. This sense of balance
helps the book to be more than credible, and supports the very strong authorial voice, which guides the book firmly without
ever being overbearing.
In short, this is a wonderful book, apparently long out of print and difficult (but not impossible) to obtain. It is a very interesting story as well, from one of the most extraordinary and remote corners of the Earth, the Northern Territory of Australia. I should perhaps note that the book draws much of its authenticity from the dialogue, which is peppered with lengthy phrases in pidgin English. It has been pointed out elsewhere that pidgin is not an invention of the aboriginal (who was thought by many to be so simple-minded and uncivilized as to be incapable of learning English properly), but rather of the white race itself, which was neither inclined nor, it should be underlined, usually gifted enough in its individuals to be able to learn the quite complex languages of the native people of Australia! We, the whites, still have much to learn along these lines!
